William Weldon Vickrey
Funeral services for William Weldon Vickrey, 81, of Valley Mills, were held Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at Clifton Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Tom Beaty officiating. Interment
followed in Valley Mills cemetery. Vickrey died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, in Valley Mills. He was born April 20, 1921, in Mosheim, to parents John F. and Bell Francis Howard Vickrey. He attended college at the University of Texas at Arlington, studying electrical engineering. He served in the U.S. Air Force in World War II as a B-4 bomber co-pilot, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Bronze Star for service in the Pacific Theater. Following his service, he was a pilot with Braniff Airways for 21 years before retiring as a captain. Vickrey was a Methodist. Vickrey is preceded in death by two wives, Betty Jean Vickrey and Joyce Vickrey. He is survived by a son, John F. Vickrey of Detroit; a stepson, Scott Fickling of Los Angeles; a daughter, Valli and husband Kevin Balch of Garland; a brother, John M. (Buster) Vickrey of Clifton; a sister, Corrine Johnson of Farr; and five grandchildren.
Leo Cox
Funeral services were held for Leo Cox, 70, of Valley Mills, on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, at Mosheim Baptist Church with the Rev. Lawrence Hammond officiating. Cox was born on April 15, 1932, in Lane’s Chapel, the son of Kirby and Lydia (Kleibrink) Cox. He passed away on Dec. 30, 2002, at his residence. He was married
to Dolly Calfee in 1952, in Fort Worth. Cox was a retired air traffic controller and he had moved back to the Valley Mills and Mosheim area in 1996. He was a member of Mosheim Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Dolly Cox; two sons, Michael Cox of Sanger and Dennis Cox of Valley Mills; daughter, Cindy Davis of Fort Worth; brothers, Glenn Cox of Valley Mills and Kirby Cox of Fort Worth; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Interment
was at Lane’s Chapel cemetery under the direction of Foss Funeral Home of Valley Mills.
Katie Hutchison
Funeral services were held for Katie Ferrell Bearden Hutchison, 93, on Monday, Jan. 6, 2003 at the Clifton Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Don Bearden and Rev. Bill Connally officiating. Hutchison was born on May 6, 1909, in Fairview, Texas, to Arthur Crumbley Bearden and Henrietta Moore Bearden. She passed away on Jan. 4, 2003. She attended the Fairview school system, and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Valley Mills. She participated in Sunday School classes, other church functions, and she helped with serving the senior citizens at the City Hall in Valley Mills. Hutchison, or Aunt Katie, as she was called by most people, enjoyed doing her own yard work, growing plants and flowers, doing needlework, and entertaining her friends and family with wonderful meals. She married
Fred Hutchison on Sept. 18, 1943, in Fort Worth, where she spent the majority of her married
life and her working life with Globe Laboratories. After their retirement, the Hutchisons purchased a home in Valley Mills. She continued to live there for several years after Fred’s death on July 13, 1978. They were married
for 35 years. Later, in 1999, with declining health, She chose to move to the Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home, selling both her house in Valley Mills and the farm in Cayote. Hutchison was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Hutchison, in 1978; her parents; two sisters, Iva Bearden McMillan and Mattie Bearden McMillan; and four brothers, Benny Rush Bearden, Ray Bearden, Audie Bearden, and Frank Bearden. She is survived by one sister, Florence Bearden Downey, along with six nieces, Helen Blassingame, Catherine Dorough, Edna Gilmore, Joyce Higginbotham, Bessie Mounger, and Florence Sadler; and seven nephews, Wendell Bearden, Donald Bearden, Bobbie Bearden, Bobby Ray Bearden, Clark McMillan, Jack McMillan, and Virgil McMillan. Everyone who came in contact with her knew she was very independent and full of wit and humor. She was blessed with a long life but will be missed by her family and friends. Pallbearers were Clark McMillan, John McMillan, Donald Bearden, Bobbie Bearden, Bart Bearden, and Bert Reyna. Internment was in the Clifton Memorial cemetery in Clifton under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.
Vera Mae Simmons
Funeral services for Vera Mae Simmons, 90, were held at First Baptist Church of Laguna Park, with Doug Evans officiating. Simmons, who was cremated, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003. She was born March 5, 1913, to Joseph Balon and Sadie Mae Agee Nelson in Bonham. She attended Bailey English School in Bonham, and then Raynal School in Denison. She graduated from Denison High School in 1931, and attended Wichita Falls Junior College for one year. She married
William T. Simmons on Jan. 26, 1935, in the parsonage of First Baptist Church of Denison. As a girl, she always said she would marry a preacher, and after almost 20 years of marriage she and her husband began pastoring small Baptist churches in Texas; Watford City, N.D.; Billings, Mont.; Baker, Mont.; Miles City, Mont.; and Aberdeen, S.D. They retired to central Missouri where their daughter and grandchildren lived, and pastored at Hallsville, Mo. Later they moved to Marfa for the dry climate and pastored at Presidio. They retired again in 1985 and moved to Laguna Park to be near her brothers and sisters. Her husband died in 1990, but she remained in Laguna Park until August 2001 when she moved back to Billings to live with her son and daughter-in-law. She was there about a year until suffering stroke, and was moved to Valley Mills Care Center. It was said her garden in Laguna Park “fed half of Bosque County, ” and that okra from “Miss Vera’s” garden was a treat to be relished, as were her melons, beans, onions, and potatoes. Her friends knew if they didn’t lock their cars during church, they were likely to come out to find a sack of vegetables in the front seat. Simmons is survived by a daughter, Donna Pulliam of Columbia, Mo.; a son, Bill and wife Marilyn Simmons of Billings, Mont.; four grandchildren, Dale and wife Joanne Pulliam of Lake Elsinore, Calif., Joy and husband Peter Castillo of Columbia, Mo., Michele and husband John Redell of Houston, and Patrick Simmons of Seattle; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Virginia and husband Tom Chandler of Arlington; Louise Rhery of Belton; brother Joe Nelson of Alva, Okla.; brother Leonard and wife Lena Nelson of Sherman; brother-in-law Dean Dixon of Arlington; sister-in-law Wanda Simmons of Denison; sister-in-law Lillian Simmons of College Station; and many loving nieces and nephews.
LeRoy Mappe, Sr.
Funeral services were held for LeRoy Mappe, Sr., 94, on Monday, April 7, 2003, at Crawford First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Don Elrod and Dr. Sidney Roberts officiating. Mappe was born on Dec. 17, 1908, the son of the late Felix Reid and Ada Lee Jones Mappe in Athens, Ga. He passed away on Friday, April 4, 2003. As an infant, Mappe moved to a Crawford farm where he was reared. He graduated from Crawford High School in 1927. On Nov. 18, 1930, he married
Erma “Shorty” Anderson in Crawford. In 1956, the family moved into town where they made their home for many years. General Tire in Waco employed him for many years as tire inspector until his Dec. 31, 1973, retirement. Mappe enjoyed the farm and was a Crawford-area farmer. As a member of First United Methodist Church, he was a member of the Try Class. Several years ago he received his 50-year pin as a member of Crawford Masonic Lodge. In 2001, he was honored as the Grand Marshall in the Tonkawa Traditions Parade. Until the time of his death, Mappe was Crawford’s oldest living resident. He was preceding in death by his wife, Erma, who passed away on Dec. 19, 1999. Survivors include one son, LeRoy “Sonny” Mappe, Jr. of Pasadena; one daughter, Karen Crockett of Waco; four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Bill Holmes, Joe Holmes, Roy Alan Jones, Gary Walker, Max Walker and Mike Williamson. Memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Dorothy Deal
Funeral services for Dorothy Kidwell Deal, age 85, of Crawford, were held Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey in Waco, the Rev. Dean Reed, former associate pastor of Austin Avenue United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial followed at Oakwood cemetery. Deal passed away Saturday, April 5, 2003, at a local nursing home. She was the youngest of five children born to B.C. and Alma Kidwell on Feb. 17, 1918. She was seven months old when her mother died in the influenza epidemic of 1918. She was raised by family members Wiley and Alice Mackey. The Mackey’s owned the Central Hotel in Clifton, where they raised her as their own. She attended school in Clifton as well. She married
C.M. Deal, Jr. on Sept. 30, 1934. After traveling many years with the Montgomery Wards Co., they returned to Waco and settled on the family farm where they lived the last 50 years. She enjoyed many years working with the public at Salesman Sample Outlet, the store she and her husband founded in 1969. She was a member of Austin Avenue United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, C.M. Deal, Jr. and her son, Calvin (Jimmy) Deal, III. Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Linda Deal of Waco; a granddaughter, Melody and husband Lance High of Waco; a grandson Cal and wife Kim Deal of Hewitt; four great-grandchildren, Rachel and husband Wesley Thompson of Robinson, Calvin Deal of Hewitt, Katie Deal of Hewitt, and Heidi High of Robinson; and great-great grandson Wesley Thompson.. Pallbearers were be Cal Deal, Calvin Deal, Don Filgo, Lance High, Dennis Kidwell, and Wesley Thompson. Tim W. Shipman
Funeral services for Tim W. Shipman, 38, of Buchanan Dam and formerly of Meridian, were held Saturday, April 5, 2003, at Meridian First Baptist Church, the Rev. Richard Creech officiating. Interment
followed in Clifton Memorial cemetery. Shipman died on Wednesday, April 2, 2003, in San Angelo. He was born March 6, 1965, in Cleburne, a son of John Thomas and Harriet Elaine Ealy Shipman. He moved to Meridian at a young age where he finished Meridian High School in 1983. While in school, he was active in sports, especially football, where he was an All-District player. He attended Tarleton State University in Stephenville and Texas State Technical College in Waco. On Feb. 21, 1987, he was united in marriage to Kris Purcell in Meridian. The couple lived in Fort Worth for a while before returning to Meridian, where he worked as an electrician and plant supervisor for Chemical Lime in Clifton for 11 years before being transferred to Buchanan Dam in 1996. For the past several years he has worked as a foreman for the Texas Commercial Fence Company in Burnet. Shipman was a Methodist, and was said to be a very loving and caring husband and father to his wife and children. He is survived by his wife, Kris Purcell Shipman of Buchanan Dam; two daughters, Kasey and Chelsea Shipman of Buchanan Dam; his parents, Harriet Shipman of Nederland and John Shipman of Arlington; a sister, Karen Powell of West Lebanon, Ind.; two brothers, Matthew Shipman of Nederland and Paul Shipman of Grove; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends. Pallbearers were Matthew Shipman, Paul Shipman, Steve Powell, Chad Purcell, Thad Purcell, Barry Morrison, Gary Morrison, and Brian Quebedeaux. John Palmer Reesing
Funeral services for John Palmer Reesing, 94, of Clifton, were held Friday, April 11, 2003, in the chapel at Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home, Chaplain Pat Dietrich officiating. Interment
followed in Clifton cemetery. Reesing died Tuesday, April 8, 2003. He was born Aug. 17, 1908, in the Harmony Community near Clifton, to Oscar and Emma Reesing. He was baptized Oct. 18, 1908, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Clifton. He was confirmed at Trinity on April 18, 1924. He was always an active member of a Lutheran church. In his 12 years at Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home, he served as an usher at the chapel services, and was always faithful in his church attendance. He was a farmer and a machinist most of his working years. He enjoyed playing baseball and basketball, fishing, and table games with his brothers and friends. He was married
briefly to Gladys Wann, who died suddenly and left him a widower for many years. He married
Cressie Dugger on May 28, 1975. They lived in Fort Worth until 1990, when they moved to Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home. She died on May 21, 1998. His parents, seven brothers, and two sisters also preceded him in death. He is survived by his stepson, George and wife Jo Ellen Dugger; stepson Will Dugger; step-grandchildren Abby Elizabeth Dugger and John David Dugger; one sister, Eunice Cooksey; and a brother, Raymond and wife Lonnie Reesing. Pallbearers were O.A. Hardwick, Will Dugger, Furman Grimm, Jerry Tom Reesing, Lauris Huse, and Paul Reesing. Memorials in his name may be made to Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home or Trinity Lutheran Church. Clifton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Rose Marie Anz Johnson
Funeral services were held for Rose Marie Anz Johnson on Dec. 14, 2002, with her Pastor, Jim Warmerdam, of Valley Grove Baptist Church of Stephenville, officiating. Rose Marie Anz was born on Dec. 15, 1918, in Moshiem, to Lillie Schultze Anz and Robert Anz. She passed away peacefully in her home on Dec. 13, 2002. On April 16, 1938, she married
her sweetheart, James Johnson. Together for 64 years they built a family and taught their children to love the Lord, go to church, and to help others. She loved her Lord and Savior, her family, her horses, her flowers and trees. Her children are, James Burrell Johnson, Clinton and Frieda Johnson, Howard and Vickie Johnson, and Nona Elaine and Brad Muncie. Her children and grandchildren have precious memories of special times spent with Mama J and Papa J and will pass on the funny family stories to the next generation. Among the many who will miss Rose are her sisters and brothers, Sunday School class members, and long time friends. In her quiet and gracious way, she reached out to help many people. She faithfully lifted people up in prayer, asking for God to send His showers of blessings. Her loving family includes Lillian Pool, Lucille Martin, Ruby and Janice Collins, Melvin and Raymond Anz, Laverne and J.B., Elza, Clyde Kizer, Fern and Earl Curlee, and Joyce and Don Alanis. She has gone on to Glory, but because Jesus lives, we can face tomorrow. Her legacy of Christian love and failty will see Daddy and us through until we join her in Heaven one day. Until then, we will remember Mama telling us, “He’s got the whole world in His hands.” Interment
was in West End cemetery in Stephenville.
