Kenneth Foree Jennings
Funeral services were held for Kenneth (Ken) Foree Jennings, 75, of Lakeside Village on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at Zion United Church in Womack, followed by a private graveside service. Jennings was born to Joseph Foree Jennings and Margaret Trollinger Jennings in Fort Worth. He passed away on Jan. 11, 2004, after a 21 year battle with heart disease. Jennings spent 50 years in Dallas residing in Oak Cliff until 1980. He graduated from Sunset High in 1948 and was a member of the “Elwood Bunch.” An Air Force National Guard officer and Air Force Reserve Veteran, her retired from Vought Aircraft Industries. Throughout his life, Jennings was active in civic/community leadership roles, including Boy Scouts, Oak Cliff area J.C.’s, Executive 100 Council; church and volunteer fire department activities. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Doris Jennings of Lakeside Village; one sister; JoAnne Arnold and husband, Jim, of Lakeside Village; children, Bobby Jennings of Duncanville, Tom VanHoose and wife, Kim, of Highwood, Mont., Judy Rotolo and husband, Al, of Rockwall, Diane Natenstedt and husband, Rob, of Reno, Nev.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorials can be made to Happy Hill Farms Academy, 3846 N. Hwy. 144, Granbury, TX 76048; Zion United Church, Building Fund, 1411 FM 219, Clifton, TX 76634-4636; Lakeside Village Volunteer Fire Department; or a charity of your choosing. C.F. Johnson, Jr.
Funeral services for Christian Fredrick Johnson, Jr., 65, of Wylie, were held Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at Charles W. Smith and Sons Funeral Home Chapel, Sachse, the Revs. Aubrey Lawrence Jackson, Carl Wayne Cole, and Bill Moore officiating. Interment
followed in the Dallas-Fort Worth National cemetery. He died Jan. 23, 2004, in Wylie. Johnson was born Sept. 27, 1938, in Pottsville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rebecca Johnson; parents Christian F. and Clarice Johnson; and four brothers, Curtis Wayne Johnson, Roy E. Johnson, Ray M. Johnson, and Alton Johnson. He is survived by his daughter, Lois J. (Johnson) and husband Gary McGee; granddaughter Jennifer Lois McGee; and grandson Christian Don McGee. Charles W. Smith and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Charlie Turner
Funeral services for Charlie Turner, 81, of Rockport, were held Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at Clifton Funeral Home Chapel. Clifton Masonic Lodge #360 A.F. & A.M. conducted graveside services at Clifton cemetery, where Turner was interred. Turner died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, in Rockport. He was born at Godley to William Pelly and Lottie Carter Turner on March 16, 1922. He married
Vera M. Remington on July 20, 1943, in Valley Mills. They were married
60 years, and were blessed with two sons, Larry Don Turner, and William Claude (Bill) Turner. Bill Turner preceded his father in death. Turner was a Past Master of Farmers Branch Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. #395; a member of Clifton Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. #360; a Past Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star #687; a member of the Clifton chapter of the OES #283; a 32° member of the Waco Scottish Rite Bodies; a charter member of Lake Whitney Disabled American Veterans #215; a member American Legion Post #322, Clifton; and a member of First Baptist Church of Rockport. He was a veteran of Word War II, and a founder of the West Shore Volunteer Fire Department. He was a past resident of Laguna Park for some 25 years, and was a resident of Circle W. in Rockport the past 10 years. He was preceded in death by a son, William Claude (Bill) Turner; and by a sister, Lucille Olson. Turner is survived by his wife, Vera M. Turner of Rockport; a son, Larry D. and wife Charlotte Turner of Laguna Park; two granddaughters; three step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Toya Delk Killion; a brother, James P. Turner; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Jeff Schafner, Davis Asher, Don Lawson, Dennis Poe, Kirk Bonner, and C.L. Sprayberry. Honorary pallbearers were Wade Degges and Clifton Masonic Lodge #360 A.F. & A.M. Clifton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Doris Gene Hoel Schulz
Funeral services were held for Doris Gene Hoel Schulz, 80, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Fort Worth, on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, with the Rev. Dr. Ronald K. Heimsoth, officiating. Burial followed the committal services in Our Savior’s Lutheran cemetery at Norse Community, Clifton, with Rev. Pat Dietrich officiating. Schulz was born on Jan. 18, 1923, the sixth child and fourth daughter of Martin S. and Clarice Johnson Hoel in rural Bosque County. She passed away at North Texas State Medical Center on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004. She baptised at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Norse Community, near Clifton, on March 1, 1923. She was raised on a diversified farm with livestock and grain and cotton production in the Norse Community where she learned the value of hospitality and a love for people. Participants in Bible Camp during the summers from North Texas would frequently stay an extra night on the Hoel farm as they left camp on their return journey. She affirmed her baptismal covenant through the Rite of Confirmation at Our Savior’s on July 3, 1938. She graduated from Clifton High School and went on to continue her education at Clifton College, a junior college which later was merged with Texas Lutheran College, now University, at Seguin. While a student at Clifton College, she was named Miss Clifton College. Following graduation she taught school at Womack Elementary School, Womack, TX. She later entered a retailing career, first with Scarbrough’s in Austin, and later with Nieman-Marcus in Dallas while her husband finished his formal education at Southern Methodist University. She married
Carrol M. Schulz on May 12, 1945, at the same church where she and her husband had been baptized and confirmed together, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in the Norse Community. To this union were born two daughters, Cindy and Becky. The family moved from Dallas to Fort Worth where they joined Trinity Lutheran Church. Schulz was actively involved in her congregation, serving on the Altar Guild, and in the lives of her two daughters, serving the scouting world and the PTA at their schools. In 1975, the couple moved to Waco where they joined St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church. After the death of her husband in 1989, and after several strokes, she moved to the Clifton Sunset Home Assisted Living in 2000. In 2002, she again moved back to Fort Worth and again joined Trinity Lutheran Church. A totally devoted wife and mother, Schulz later showered her affection on her grandchildren, and was extremely proud of her great-grandchildren. She had a passion for entertaining, gardening, and landscaping. Her residence was in the Woodway neighborhood of Waco. She was featured by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram in the 1970’s highlighting her outstanding talent for home entertaining and love of Norwegian cuisine. She was a member of the Waco Garden Club and was recognized by the Woodway neighborhood for her landscaping ability. She had recently moved to the Arbors at Broadway Plaza, Westover Hills. Her family wishes to express their appreciation and special thanks to Dr. Janice Knebl and the caring staff of the Arbors. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Lois Rogstad; one brother, J.C. Hoel; and her husband, Carrol. Survivors include her daughters, Cindy and her husband, Joe D. Killingsworth of Dallas, and Becky and her husband, E.C. “Trey” Harper III of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Kimberly Killingsworth Heavner and her husband, Chris, of Frisco; Kevin Killingsworth of Dallas; Hilary Harper of Lewisville, and Nicholas Harper, a senior at the University of Oklahoma; great-grandchildren, Haley and Trevor Heavner; sisters, Lottie Mae Guthrie of Clifton and Al Marie Kappler and her husband, Rubin, of Baytown; one brother, Martin S. Hoel Jr. and his wife, Lydia of Clifton; a sister-in-law, Wilma Schulz Dean of Fort Worth; a brother-in-law, H.V. Schulz and his wife, Eva Lee, of Clifton; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as many other friends. Bearers of her casket were her sons-in-law, Joe Killingsworth and Trey Harper; grandsons, Kevin Killingsworth, Nicholas Harper and Chris Heavner; and nephews, Gary Kappler and Rick Lundberg. Those desiring, please make memorial contributions in Doris Schulz’s name to Trinity Lutheran Church, The Gladney Center, or to a charity of choice. Cliffie Bertelsen Drucke
Funeral services were held for Cliffie Drucke, 97, on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at the chapel at Providence Park with the Rev. Msgr. Mark Deering officiating. Drucke was born on Nov. 21, 1906, in the Mustang Community near Cranfills Gap to Alice Tergerson Bertelson and Martin J. Bertelson. She passed away on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004. She was raised and educated in both Cranfills Gap and Mustang, respectively. In 1923, the 16-year-old entered Providence School of Nursing in Waco. After 3½ years, she graduated in May 1926, received her diploma and decame a registered nurse. The youngest member of a class of 18, one male and 17 females, she was also the valedictorian of the class. Her first employer was with Providence Hospital as head surgical nurse. Also, at various times, she engaged in private duty nursing. In 1935, she attended the School and Anesthesiology at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. After completion of the courses, she received her diploma as a certified anesthetist. She was then employed in a hospital in Waxahachie for 10 years. During World War II, she worked as an industrial nurse at the Cactus Ordinance Works Hospital in Dumas. During the years 1956-58, she enrolled at Baylor University studying advanced courses. At this time, she was also employed as a head nurse with the Veterans Administration Hospital. After 22½ years of service at the V.A., she retired in 1969 having given 43 years of dedicated service to her nursing profession. She married
Louis F. Drucke in Waco on Dec. 26, 1929. The couple maintained a home there together for 25 years until his death on Sept. 22, 1955. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; brother, William D. Bertelsen, 1975; two sister, Travis Langford, 1992; Frances Carlin, 2003; grand nephew, Marcus Tyler, 1991; nieces, Virginia Tyler, 1992, and Lani Roberts, 2000. Survivors include sisters, Alle Mae Tyler of Clifton, Virigie Denton of Houston, Margie Rhodes of Fort Worth; sister-in-law, Etaa Mae Bertelsen of Clifton; three nieces, Christabel Jorgenson of San Marcos; Bettye Spears of Waco, and Alice Rhoades of Houston. Pallbearers were her nephews, Bellamy Bertelsen of Clifton, Bill Denton of Houston, Frank Tyler of Denton, Ron and Chris Spears, and Jim Alvarado, all three of Waco. Honorary pallbearers were O. Jan Tyler of Dallas, Richard Troll of Bedford, and Jay Denton of Houston. Burial followed at Holy Cross cemetery arranged by Wilkerson-Hatch Funeral Homes.
Faye Chambers
Funeral services for Faye Chambers, 90, were held Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, at Blessing Funeral Home in Mansfield. Chambers died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, at a Clifton hospital. She was married
to Leonard Chambers for 67 years. He preceded her in death. She is survived by sons Billy Clyde Chambers of Venus, Robert Chambers and Jim Chambers of Mansfield, daughter Sue Camp of Cranfills Gap, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Roberta Jared Denton
Funeral services were held for Roberta Jared Denton, 82, of Georgetown, formerly of Clifton and Galveston, on Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Galveston Memorial Park. Denton was born on July 3, 1921, in Nashville, Tenn. to Ewart O. and Gradye Leftwich Jared. She passed away on March 28, 2004, in Georgetown. She married
Wyley Harrison Denton in December 1945 in Galveston. Denton was a graduate of the University of Washington with a BA in social work. Denton was a teacher for the Galveston Independent School District and Trinity Episcopal School in Galveston. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Clifton where she served on various committees. She was also a member of Phi Mu Sorority, an association of university women and the Clifton Magazine Club. She was a long-time teacher, dedicated and active church member, loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; son Paul C. Denton; brother, Lewis (Buddy) Jared; and sisters, Alma Boda and Lucy Nabors. Survivors include her sons, Robert Denton and wife, Becky, of Houston, and Grady Denton and wife, Loretta Denton of Georgetown; grandchildren, Robin (Jamie) Denton of Kyle, David (Bunny) Denton of Pearland, Stephen (Jenny) Denton of Denton, Sarah (Jag) Myers of San Antonio, Rachel Denton of Georgetown; great-grandchildren, Cameron Hamilton and Cooper Jameson Denton of Kyle. Joe Harold Moorman
A celebration of the life of Joe Harold Moorman, 76, of Meridian, was held Saturday, March 20, 2004, at Clifton Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. David Fergeson officiating. Moorman died Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at a Clifton hospital. A fourth-generation Texan, he was born Aug. 4, 1927, in Cayote, to Arch and Avis Richards Moorman. He attended schools first in Fairview, then graduated from Clifton High School in 1945. He joined the U.S. Army in January 1946, and served as a cook. He lived and worked in Houston and San Antonio before returning to Bosque County in the early 1980s. He was retired from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Moorman was an active member of his community, serving as a city council member, a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, a member of First United Methodist Church of Meridian, and a member of the Bosque County Collection. He is survived by a brother, Ed Moorman of Meridian; and a sister, Melva Moorman Hamilton of Ardmore, Okla. Pallbearers were Robert Moorman, David Moorman, Don Eaton, Richard Eaton, Billy Eaton, and Jess Taylor. Honorary pallbearers were Mervin (Fuzz) Spitzer and Bill Salmans. Clifton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Myrtle N. Aars
Funeral services were held for Myrtle N. Aars, 100, of Longview on Saturday, March 6, 2004, at Welch Funeral and Memorial Center Garden Court with Loren Quick and LaRon Branson officiating. Aars was born Dec. 30, 1903, to Terry and Minnie Mickelson Nelson in Bosque County. She passed away Thursday, March 4, 2004, at her residence. Her Christian faith was very strong, as was her faith in God. She dedicated her life to being a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Aars in 1974; and two sons, Kenneth Duvon Aars in 1936 and Douglas “Buster” Aars in 1986. Survivors include daughter, Wanda Phillips of Longview, granddaughter, Susan VanMeter and husband, Jerry, of Longview; grandson, David Phillips and wife, Dana, of Texarkana; great-grandchildren, Brandon of Denton, Kevin of Waco, Lauren and Stewart of Texarkana, and Emily and Kathryn of Longview; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family requests that memorials be made to Hearts Way Hospice, 1306 Pine Tree Road, Longview, Texas 75604. Interment
was at Memory Park cemetery under the direction of Wlech Funeral and Memorial Center in Longview.
