Martha Stukes
Funeral services were held for Martha Stukes, 80, on Tuesday, March 23 at First Baptist Church of Yoakum with the Rev. Richard Bowden officiating. One of six children, Stukes was born on May 12, 1923, in Austin to Martin Marvin Mansfield Morriss and Carrie Lee Childress Morriss. She passed away on March 19, 2004, in Yoakum. She married
Gordon M. Stukes and had eight children. She was a housewife and was a member of the First Baptist Church, as well as the Joy Sunday School class. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; sister, Minnie Reeves; and four brothers, Marvin, Gus, Sidney, and Martin Ray Morriss. Survivors include her sister, Ethel Hoffpauir; five daughters, Martha Boutwell of Clifton, Wy Raisosek of Hallettsville, Carrie Tarrant of Crawford, Debbie Carswell of Austin, and Shelia Etoll of Yoakum; three sons, Wayne, Aaron, and Louis Stukes, all of Yoakum; 22 grandchildren; and 25 grandchildren. Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society or the First Baptist Church. Arrangements were made through the Buffington Funeral Home in Yoakum.
Jessie Mosley Reed
Funeral service with the Rosary were held for Jessie Mosley Reed, 102, of Meridian, on Monday, March 22, 2004, at Hass Funeral Home in Clayton, N.M., Father James McGowan (pastor of Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Clayton) officiating. Internment followed in Clayton Memorial cemetery. Reed died Saturday, March 20, 2004, in Clayton. She was born March 7, 1902, in Brashear, Texas, to Jesse W. and Julia (Stauts) Mosley. She married
Louis Phelps Reed in 1928 in Dallas. Together, they ranched most of their lives in New Mexico, Texas, and Colorado, and they owned and operated a construction company in Texas. He preceded her in death in 1964. She continued ranching and riding horses well into her 90s. In addition to her husband and parents, Reed was preceded in death by her son, Louis Mosley Reed, by one brother, six sisters, and by grandson Walter Reed. Reed is survived by a daughter, Julia Reed and husband Richard A. Russell of Clayton, N.M.; nine grandchildren, Sean and wife Susan Russell, Marian and husband Billy Kleine, Gay and husband Mark Podzemny, R. Reed Russell, Clair and husband Terry Davis, Louis Russell, Patricia Reed, John Reed, and Dean Reed. The family suggests that memorials be made to the West Texas Rehabilitation Center, 4601 Hartford Street, Abilene, TX 79605. Burrell Nelson (Tex) Word
Burrell Nelson “Tex” Word, 83, of Meridian passed away Saturday, March 13 in a Temple hospital. No services are planned. Word was born Nov. 13, 1920, in Walnut Springs. He was a graduate of Meridian High School in 1937 and Clifton College in 1941. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was a glider pilot in World War II. Word retired as a major after 22 years of service. Word married
Olga Riemer in 1946, and she preceded him in death in 2002. After his retirement from the USAF, he worked for the Texas Department of Transportation in Bosque County, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the Meridian First United Methodist Church, like member of the Retired Officers Association, VFW and DAV, and was a charter member of the WWII Glider Pilot Museum in Terrell. Arrangements were made through Lawson Funeral Home in Meridian.
Candy Rodriguez
A Rosary was recited Monday, March 15, 2004, at Lawson Funeral Home Chapel in Meridian for Candy Rodriguez, 42, of Meridian, who died Saturday, March 13, 2004, in a Waco hospital. A Mass was held Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at Lawson Funeral Home Chapel. Interment
followed at Meridian cemetery. She was born Sept. 16, 1961, in Mexico, and had lived in Meridian since 1975. She worked as a seamstress in a clothing manufacturing company for many years. She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Morgan. Rodriguez lived her life for God and her children, and her faith in her Lord never faltered. She loved and praised each and every person who shared her life. She worked endless hours without complaint, and inspired everyone who knew her. Survivors include her parents, Francisco and Antonia Rodriguez of Laguna Park; daughter Mona Felan of Meridian; sons Johnny Anthony Felan and Jordan Ivan Felan, both of Meridian; brother Juan Antonio Rodriguez of Laguna Park; fiance John Waggoner of Hillsboro; special friend Jackie Russell of Hillsboro; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Pallbearers were Anthony Rodriguez, Joseph Rodriguez, Marcus Rodriguez, Pilar Rodriguez, Freddie Garza, and Mario Ballesteros. Lawson Funeral Home, Meridian, was in charge of arrangements.
Fayelene Sue Carlson
Funeral services were held for Fayelene Sue Carlson, 53, on Saturday, March 20, at First United Methodist Church in Stephenville with the Rev. Dean Reed officiating and Carolyn King delivering the eulogy. Carlson was born on May 18, 1950, in Clifton to Gus and Edna Krueger. She passed away on Thursday, March 18, 2004, at her Stephenville residence. She was a graduate of Clifton High School, and was a member of the Stephenville First United Methodist Church. She married
Lyndon Carlson on Nov. 11, 1972 in Clifto, and made their home in Stephenville. Carlson was a hairdresser at A Cut Aboce Salon for many years until her health forced her to retire. She was a very active volunteer with the American Cancer Society. She loved her family and friends. She was an inspiration to everyone who knew her. She was a comforter, ministering courage and being a friend to those who may have felt alone when they were diagnosed with cancer. She continued to work with Relay For Life. She was preceded in death by her father Gus Krueger, Sr. Survivors include her husband, Lyndon Carlson; son, Shane Carlson of Austin; two daughters, Amy Carlson of Fort Worth and Brandi Barron and husband, Brad, of Tolar; granddaughter, Baieigh Albright; mother, Edna Faye Krueger of Clifton; two sisters, Ann Spenrath, and Charlene Meador and husband, John, both of Clifton; brother, Gus Krueger, Jr. and wife, Maggie, of Waco; nieces, nephews, and numerous other families members and close friends. Pallbearers were Jason Spenrath, Brad Spenrath, Corey Shaw, Lyndell Carlson, Craig Johnson, and Owen Carlson. Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society. Interment
was held at Gardens of Memory cemetery in Stephenville under the direction of Stephenville Funeral Home.
Thomas Floyd Lumpkin
Funeral services were held for Thomas Floyd Lumpkin of Clifton on Monday, March 22, 2004, at the Clifton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Donnie Bearden of Breckenridge officiating. Lumpkin was born on Dec. 20, 1919, in Greenoch to the late Joe Bailey Lumpkin and Zuela Lumpkin. He passed away on Saturday, March 20, 2004, following a brief illness. As a youth, he attended school at Merivale-Fairview School in the Fairview community, receiving great support and care from his aunt and uncle, Gladys and Frank Bearden. On Jan. 29, 1938, he married
Ruby Moss of Valley Mills in Waco. He served his country during World War II with the U.S. Navy on the Pacific Front. He returned from the war and was employed with Community Public Service as manager of the ice plant in Clifton. He later worked for General Tire and Rubber Plant in Waco, retiring in 1979. After his retirement, he and Ruby enjoyed spending time on their small farm in the Norse community and at home. He had a deep love for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, taking pride in their accomplishments. Lumpkin was a member of the American Legion Post 322 and the VFW Post 8553 of Clifton, and he enjoyed many robust games of 42 with his friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and great-grandson, Adam Selman. Survivors include his wife, two sons, Lloyd Lumpkin and wife, Peggy, of Valley Mills and Bobby Joe Lumpkin and wife, Roxie, of Hewitt; three daughters, LaVern Wilcox and husband, Tommy, of Clifton, Geneva Casey and husband, Albert of Clifton, and Sandra Clark and husband, Roger, of Valley Mills; brother, Clarence Lumpkin of Crawford; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were grandsons Stanley Wilcox and Bobby Dale Lumpkin; great-grandsons, Zackery Fehler, Brandon Selman, Lucas Fehler; and Jacob Fehler. Honorary pallbearers were great-grandsons Dustin Lumpkin, Chad Selman, and Jason Devels. Interment
followed at the Clifton cemetery with full military honors from Clifton American Legion and Clifton Veterans of Foreign Wars. Arrangements were made through Clifton Funeral Home.
E.A. (Dutch) Treadaway
Masonic graveside services were held for E.A. “Dutch” Treadaway, 83, on Sunday, Feb. 15. He passed away Friday, Feb. 13, at his home in Laguna Park. Treadaway was born in Welburton, Okla. on March 21, 1921. At an early age his family moved to Miles, Texas, where he grew up. The family consisted of seven boys and two girls. Treadaway loved Miles where he and his brothers hunted and fished. He was an outdoor person. Later on he moved to Fairfield, Texas. For many years, he worked for W.J. Thomas, who offered him a job building power transmission lines. Upon the death of Thomas, Treadaway moved over to the inspection side of the business at Brazos Electric Corporation where he was employed until his retirement. Treadaway, a member of the Methodist church, was a friendly person who made many long-lasting friendships where he lived and worked. He was a 50-year member of Fairfield Masonic Lodge. He was known by many as “The Can Man” as he collected cans for the children at Shriner’s Hospitals. In over a seven-year period, he collected over $35, 000 worth of cans. He held memberships in the Clifton Masonic Lodge, Fairfield Masonic Lodge, Waco Scottish Rite, Knight’s Templar, Clifton Eastern Star #283, York Rite, and the Waco Karem Shriners. Treadaway fought a long battle with cancer giving all he could muster to live. He loved life, loved his family, and loved his kids. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, two sisters, and four brothers. Survivors include his wife, Azalee; two sons, Frank Treadaway and his wife, Fran, and Eddie Treadaway and his wife, Elizabeth; step son Gary Petterson and his wife, Linda; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two step grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; two brothers, Roy Treadaway and Stanley Treadaway; and a host of friends. Interment
was held at Clifton Memorial Park with Clifton Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
Lucie Winters
A memorial service for Lucie Marie Helton Winters, 79, of Georgetown, was held Monday, March 15, 2004, at the Gabriels Funeral Chapel, Georgetown, Pastor Dan Wooldridge of Crestview Baptist Church officiating. followed at Clifton cemetery. Winters died Thursday, March 11, 2004. She was born March 29, 1924, in Clifton, to James and Lucinda Helton. On Oct. 14, 1945, she married
William (Bill) Winters. The couple began their life together in Levittown, N.Y., later moving back to Texas to be close to family. She was preceded in death by her son, Michael James Winters’ her parents, James David and Lucinda Helton; brothers Edgar, Elbert, Burrell, John David, and Garland Helton; and sister Velma Helton Cooper. Winters is survived by her husband of 57 years, Bill Winters; children George and Carolyn Winters, Albert and Donna Dagar, Pamela Crerend, Alan and Jan Alderman, Jack and Judy Moore, and Cindy Parker; sister Donna Kathryn Helton Sparks; 27 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Pallbearers included Christopher Alderman, William Winters, Fred Dagar, Kenneth Crerend, Nicholas Moore, and Timothy Parker. Honorary pallbearers were Robert H. Winters, John Dagar, Raymond Dagar, Bradley Crerend, Robert W. Crerend, Marc Crerend, Trey Moore, Thomas Moore, and Michael Crerend.
