Annie Marie Gustafson Eary
Funeral services for Annie Marie Gustafson Eary, 86, of Clifton, were held Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Clifton Funeral Home Chapel, Brother Bill Schibler of Meridian officiating. Interment icon followed at the Rock Church cemetery in Cranfills Gap. Eary died Saturday, May 29, 2004, at Scott & White Hospital in Temple. She was born Feb. 17, 1918, in Hamilton County, to Jake and Celeste (Beall) Newman. She attended Iredell High School. On July 18, 1936, she married Sherman O’Jay Gustafson. The couple had four children. He preceded her in death in 1979. She later married Emmett Eary, who preceded her in death in 2000. A homemaker, she enjoyed garage sales and gardening. She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Cranfills Gap. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman Gustafson, in 1979; by husband Emmett Eary in 2000; by daughter Barbara Jean Dixon in 1980; and by brothers Bennie Newman in 1989, James Newman in 1990, and Arthur Newman in 1971. Eary is survived by sons Robert and wife Joyce Gustafson of Ruidoso Downs, N.M., and Donny and wife Gale Gustafson of Clifton; daughter Carolyn Lackey of Benbrook; sisters Francis Kimbell, Joann Cochrane, and Linda Kearby; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers included Charles Lackey, Donald Lackey, Charles Lackey Jr., Terry Dixon, Chris VanBramer, and Michael Henry. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Rock Church cemetery Fund. Clifton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Joyce Maxine Hoff Darden
Funeral services were held for Joyce Maxine Darden, 77, on Sunday, May 30, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church in Clifton, with interim pastor, the Rev. Marney Wasserman officiating. The only child of Milford J. Hoff and Alma Joyce Jenson Hoff, she was born on Dec. 17, 1926, in Clifton. She passed away on Friday, May 28, 2004, in a local hospital. Through most of her adolecence, she answered to the nickname “Teen.” This probably developed during her high school years in Clifton public schools. She graduated from Clifton High School in 1944 and Clifton Junior College in 1945. In 1947, she left Clifton to pursue her studies at The University of Texas in Austin. This led to a degree with a major in bacteriology. The year 1951 brought new interests to her as she returned to Clifton to prepare for a beautiful church wedding to James Bennett Darden, Jr. The wedding was on June 9, 1951. The couple enjoyed 53 years of marriage. Previously, she put the knowledge of her degree to work as a medical technologist for Dr. Otis Goodall in Memphis, Texas. This employment lasted for about two years after which she returned to her hometown to work for the Goodall-Witcher Clinic-Hospital. When the clinic and hospital became two organizations, Darden then chose to work in the laboratory and remained in that employment until retiring in 1992. In 1962, the Dardens purchased The Clifton Funeral Home. At times, she helped in the office. She also found time to perform civic and church work. The Dardens were members of the First Presbyterian Church and the Bosque Conservatory of Fine Arts. She also held membership in the American Legion Auxiliary, the VFW Auxiliary, the Business and Professional Women’s Study Guild, and the Eastern Star. In 1971, the Dardens purchased property in the Norse community that originally belonged to her great-grandparents and grandparents. In 1980, with remodeling of the old farmhouse complete, the couple became able to enjoy country living when not busy with their professions in Clifton. Survivors include her husband, J.B. Darden; aunts, Margaret Jenson and Nell Jenson; sister-in-law, Ivy Lee Schramm; and special friend, Teresa Ratliff. Pallbearers were T.F. Crawford, Sonny Sadler, Dr. W.F. Key, Eldon Solberg, Calvert Helms, and Rodney Joy. Interment icon was in the Clifton cemetery under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.

A.J. Gilleland
Funeral services were held for A.J. “Jack” Gilleland, 79, of Walnut Springs on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 in the Lawson Memorial Chapel in Walnut Springs with the Rev. Brett MacNelly officiating. Gilleland, the son of the late Andrew Jesse and Mary Francis Garner Gilleland, was born on March 18, 1925, in the White Church area of Somervell County. He passed away on Monday, May 17, 2004, in the Goodall-Witcher Hospital in Clifton. Gilleland was united in marriage to Lorene C. Gosdin on April 8, 1944, in Glen Rose. He lived most of his live on the family farm and ranch south of Walnut Springs. He was a retired farmer/rancher and worked for many years for the Walnut Springs Independent School District. He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Ray Gilleland, on Oct. 3, 1991; a brother, W.D. “Dub” Gilleland, on March 23, 1992; and a sister, Mary Ruth Gilleland, on June 23, 2002. Survivors include his wife, Lorene Gilleland of Walnut Springs; sons, Mike Gilleland and wife, Paula, of Rainbow, Bob Gilleland and wife, Sharen, of Bryan, and Wayne Gilleland and wife, Sherry, of Corpus Christi; daughter-in-law, Helene Gilleland Liming of Dripping Springs; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Pauline Hankins of Glen Rose, Ann Daniel of Glen Rose, Janie Lawson of Burleson; brother, Jerry Gilleland of Plainview; and other relatives and a host of friends. Pallbearers were William Offutt, Ron Hankins, David Jones, Larry Gosdin, Gary Gosdin, and Jay Daniel. Interment icon was in the White Church cemetery near Glen Rose under the arrangement of Lawson Funeral Home in Meridian.

Floy Niemeier Sparkman
Floy Niemeier “Peggy” Sparkman of Coryell City died Thursday, May 20, 2004, in Clifton at the age of 102. Funeral services were 2 p.m., Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Cole Funeral Home Chapel, 1113 W. Fifth Street, McGregor with Pastor Tom Beers officiating. Interment icon followed in St. John Lutheran cemetery in Coryell City. Mrs. Sparkman, one of 14 children born to the late Spencer P. and Ethel (Percival) Sparkman, was born on Aug. 5, 1901, in Dublin. At the age of one, she moved with her family by covered wagon to the area. In 1917, she was a graduate of Crawford High School where she played on the basketball team. On Sept. 24, 1919, she married Henry Niemeier at St. John Lutheran Church in Coryell City. He preceded her in death on Feb. 23, 1966. In 1968, she married T.R. Sparkman who preceded her in death in July 1981. Through her life, she enjoyed crochet and writing poetry. A former member of the St. John Lutheran Church, she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. At the time of her death, she was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Copperas Cove. Survivors include one son, Charles Niemeier of Gatesville; one daughter, Bobbie Denson of Clifton; two brothers, John B. Sparkman and Wilson Sparkman, both of Arizona; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and three great-great-great grandchildren. For those desiring, the family has suggested St. John Lutheran cemetery Association or the charity of the donor’s own choosing for memorial contributions. U.E. (Gene) Bush
Funeral services for U.E. (Gene) Bush, 60, of Iredell, were held Thursday, May 27, 2004, at First Baptist Church of Iredell. Interment icon followed at Mitchell cemetery. Bush died Sunday, May 23, 2004, in Clifton. He was born Jan. 9, 1944, in Parker County. He lived in Iredell the past 29 years. He was a roofer, and a Baptist by faith. Survivors include his mother, Johnnie Bush of Grandview; daughter Sherry Lynn Phillips of Iredell; sisters Clara Lorene Martindale of Blum and Mackie Jo Hancock of Gatesville; brothers Odie Franklin Bush, Jr. of Godley and Marion Othel Bush of Joshua; grandchildren Hillarie Phillips, Shelby Phillips, and Laramie Phillips; and special loved one Verna Mitchell-Steele and her sons, Jacky Steele and Rocky Steele. Rutledge-Jones Funeral Home, Hico, was in charge of arrangements.

Ora Mae Dahl Jorgenson
Funeral services were held for Ora Mae Dahl Jorgenson, 83, on Sunday, May 2, at Clifton Funeral Home with Brother Bill Schibler officiating. Jorgenson, the only child of Martin and Olena Dahl, was born on October 9, 1920, in Cranfills Gap (Boggy Community). She passed away on April 29, 2004. She was baptised on October 25, 1920, into the Lutheran faith and was confirmed on May 26, 1935, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church (Rock Church). She graduated from Cranfills Gap High School on May 19, 1939. In May 1940, she moved to Cypress where she went to work. On June 26, 1940, she married Ovie E. Jorgenson in Immanuel Lutheran Church in Houston. To this union were born Martin Olin and Frances Marie. The family was charter members of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in 1946. From 1952 - 1956, she worked as a meat wrapper for Minimax. Later, she worked part-time at Super Value which was then owned by R&J; Lucky 7. Survivors include one daughter, Frances Meinen and her husband, Monroe, Jr.; one son, Olin Jorgenson and his wife, Linda; five grandchildren, Martin Jorgenson II and his wife, Dana, Troy Meinen and his wife, Ellen, Lisa Meinen, Catherine Wilhelm, Angela Meinen; eight great-grandchildren, Karen Mills, Devan Meinen, Katie Meinen, Nathan Ringo, Alex Ringo, Jason Ringo, Joshua Wilhelm, and Hayden Wilhelm. Interment icon was held at Forrest Park in Houston on Monday, May 3.

Oliver Vance Johnston
Military graveside services were held for Oliver Vance Johnston, 80, of the Canyons on Lake Whitney on Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at the Dallas/Fort Worth National cemetery with Chaplain Cecil Threadgill officiating. Johnston was born on Oct. 8, 1923, in Dallas. He passed away at his residence on Saturday, May 8, 2004. Johnston served with the U.S. Navy in World War II. He married Lois Lorena Samson on April 13, 1946, in Velasco. Johnston was a foreman for Dow Chemical Company in Houston for many years before retiring to the Canyons (Cedar Shore Estates) in 1994. He was a Baptist. Survivors include his wife, Lois Johnston of the Canyons; a daughter, Mary Lois McPherson of Pasadena; sons, Bob Johnston of Clute, Bill Johnston of Cypress, and Gary Johnston of Clute; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Helen James of Plainview; and a brother, J.C. Johnston of Keller. Lawson Funeral Home in Meridian was in charge of arrangements.

Ruby Lee Wallace Holt Gouldman
Funeral services for Ruby Lee Wallace Holt Gouldman, 80, of Clifton, were held Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at Bosque Valley Baptist Church, Brother Jean Creamer officiating. Interment icon followed at Smith Bend-Coon Creek cemetery. Gouldman died Saturday, May 15, 2004, at Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home. She was born Oct. 17, 1923, in Clifton. She was baptized at the age of 12 in Turnersville Creek. She was a member of the Coon Creek Good Neighbor Club, Eastern Star, and a 42 club that met every Tuesday. On June 27, 1942, she married John Henry Holt. They were married 43 years when he passed away on Nov. 23, 1985. On June 11, 1989, she married Ruben Gouldman. He died on Jan. 11, 2004. She is survived by three sons, John Douglas and wife Rita Sue Holt of Terrell, Gary Don and wife Teresa Holt of Clifton, and Keith Dewayne and wife Andrea Holt of Aquilla; stepson David and wife Caroline Gouldman of Clifton; sister Zelma Bollier of Arlington; brothers Ralep Wallace of Maybank and Rowland Wallace of Arlington; five grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Allen Hulme, Jimmy Holt, Chris Howell, Sam Boyd, Glen McClure, and Ernie Hall. Clifton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Jay Ernest Wilson
Funeral services for Jay Ernest Wilson, 91, of Clifton, were held Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Norse. Interment , with full military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #8553 and American Legion Post #322, followed in Norse cemetery. Wilson died Sunday, May 23, 2004, in Clifton. He was born Dec. 10, 1912, in the Turkey Creek community, to Jacob E. and Betty Nelson Wilson. He was baptized at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Norse on Feb. 16, 1913, by the Rev. John K. Rystad. He was confirmed April 29, 1928, also at Our Savior’s, by the Rev. Elmer R. Larson. Wilson was a decorated World War II soldier, receiving the Purple Heart after being wounded in the Allied Invasion of Salerno, Italy. He was also awarded a citation for “exceptionally meritorious conduct” while in Italy for furnishing frontline forces with supplies. Through it all, he was never without the Bible given to him by the men of his church. He kept it in his left shirt pocket, over his heart. On Sept. 24, 1949, he married Carrie Aars at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Edmund A. Beaver officiating the ceremony. The couple lived on the Aars’ farm until Sept. 24, 1983, when they moved to Clifton. She had developed a spinal condition which required her to live at Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home for 18 years, where he visited her every day. Toward the end of the 18th year, he was no longer able to care for himself, and joined his wife at the Sunset Home on June 5, 2001. She passed away on Oct. 29, 2001. Wilson enjoyed playing dominoes and Preff with his friends. He is survived by a sister, Bernice Perkins of Orlando, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Lois Wilson of Clifton; and a number of nephews and nieces. Pallbearers were Ed Bryn, Jake Wimberly, Mark Perkins, Tom Wilson, Fred Wilson, Alvin Wilson, and Clinton Wilson. The family suggests memorials be made to the Heart Foundation. Clifton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
