Orville L. Neystel
Funeral services for Orville L. Neystel, 89, of Clifton, were held Monday, June 14, 2004, at First Baptist Church of Clifton, Dr. Jerry Smith officiating. Interment icon followed in Meridian cemetery. Neystel died Friday, June 11, 2004, at Goodall-Witcher Hospital in Clifton. He was born April 30, 1915, in Meridian, a son of the late Oscar and Matilda Elizabeth Richardson Neystel. He grew up on the White Ranch, near Meridian, and attended schools in Bosque County. On Dec. 31, 1935, he was united in marriage with Nina Loader in Iredell. They lived in Bosque County, where he farmed, ranched, and worked for the Civilian Corps building bridges and roadways. In 1939, the couple moved to Fort Worth, where he worked as an aviation mechanic and later as a supervisor, and helped wire B-36 bombers. For a time, they lived in Hale Center, working in cotton gins and operating a custom combining service. They later returned to Fort Worth to again work in the aircraft industry, retiring after some 40 years of service. He was a deacon at Immanuel Baptist Church in Fort Worth for some 54 years, and was a member of Haltom City Masonic Lodge #1337 since 1957. In 1993, he and his wife moved to Clifton, where he became a member and a deacon at First Baptist Church of Clifton. He was preceded in death by a son, Leonard G. Neystel, and an infant daughter. Neystel is survived by his wife, Nina Neystel of Clifton; sons Kenneth and wife Doris Neystel of Clifton, and Ronnie and wife Donna Neystel of Cedar Hill; grandchildren Scott Neystel, Dwain Neystel, Deidre Chastain, Deborah Neystel, Nicole Blackmon, and Jennifer Neystel; nine great-grandchildren; sisters Mildred Taylor of Hamilton, and June Mulligan of Fort Worth; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends. Pallbearers included Scott Neystel, Jeff Blackmon, Monty Chastain, William Chastain, Dwain Neystel, Jimmy Gilmore, Harold Leigh, and Elmo Harvey. Lawson Funeral Home, Meridian, was in charge of arrangements.

Oscar Prince
Funeral services were held for Oscar Prince, 83, of Las Vegas, Nev. on Saturday, June 5, 2004, at Palm Mortuary in Las Vegas in full military honors and on Wednesday, June 9, at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Wortham Bend with Pastor Richard Sellers and the Clifton Masonic Lodge #360 officiating. Prince was born on Sept. 21, 1920, at Wortham Bend to Warren and Ruby Hanna Prince. He passed away on Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at a hospital in Las Vegas. At the age of seven, Prince made a profession of faith and was baptised in the Oak Grove Baptist Church, of which he was a member his entire life. He married Betty Jane Lewis in Sacramenta, Calif. on Feb. 14, 1942. This marriage was blessed with two sons, Bob and Phil. Oscar spent most of his adult life in the military. He began his career at Randolph Field, San Antonio, and was stationed at Mather Field, Chanute Field, Long Beach Army Air Base, Hamilton Field, Maxwell Air Force Base, Nellis Air Force Base and retired from the Pentagon, Headquarters of the U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. as a Major. He graduated from Clifton High School where he was captain of the football, basketball, baseball, track, and boxing teams. In the military, he graduate from several technical and staff management and engineering schools, as well as Air Command and Staff School and Command and Staff College located at Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, Ala. He was in aircraft maintenance and engineering servicing fighter aircraft. He came up through the ranks: a warrent officer in World War II and received a Field Commission during the Korean War; held 23 different ratings and six serial numbers; and spent 10½ years overseas in his 30 years of active service. Overseas duty was in Australia, New Guinea, Dutch East Indes, Phillipines, Japan, Korea, China, Thailand, Burma, India, Viet Nam, France, Germany, England, and Okinawa. He participating in 12 campaigns in World War II and later the Korean War, French IdioChina War, and Viet Nam War. He was with the French Air Force in Siagon, China, when Den Ben Pu fell, and that country changed its name from French Idio China to Viet Nam. He later participated in the movement of Free Chinese from China to Formosa. At that time he was the only American with a Siamese Fighter Wing and was operating on the Thialand, China, Burma border, providing cover for Chanault Air Lines, who were flying the Free Chinese out over cover of darkness. He survived seven landings by water and five landings by air, one Japanese paratrooper attack, one kamakezee hit on a troop ship he was embarking from and a few other close calls. On his 23rd birthday, he was straffed five times and bombed four times by Japanese fighters and bombers. He was highly decorated, including the American, Phillippine, and Korean Presidential Citation, and many other awards for valiant duty. Upon his retirement from the military, he went to work for Jackie Gaughn of the El Cortez Organization in the gaming industry in Las Vegas, Nev. He was later a business partner, holding a gaming license from the Nevada Gaming Commission and Control Board. He loved hunting and fishing and often said he felt closer to his Maker, alone on a high snow-covered mountain peak than he did in church. Oscar was a 32nd degree Mason. He was initiated as a Free and Accepted Mason in Fairfax Lodge $556, San Anselmo, Calif., but later moved that membership to Clifton Lodge #360, Clifton, with plural membership in Nellis Lodge #46, in Las Vegas, Nev. He received his 32nd degree work in the San Francisco Bodies but moved his membership to the Las Vegas Scottish Rite body as a charter member. He was also past president of Nellis Square and Compass Club; past trustee of Nellis Lodge #46, Las Vegas, Nev; member of the Order of Eastern Star, Park Chapter #26, Las Vegas, Nev.; life member of North America Hunting Club and life member of the Retired Officers Association. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty Jane Prince; son, Philip; sister, Virginia Pearl Prince; and brother, Travis Gene Prince. Survivors include his son, Bob; daughter-in-law, Tina of Las Vegas, Nev.; grandsons, Justin, Zachary, and Josh, of Las Vegas, Nev.; and sisters, Dorothy Warren and JoNell Latham of Clifton. Interment icon was held at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetary under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.

Ruth Irene Knudson Allen
Funeral services were held for Ruth Irene Knudson Allen, 92, of Cranfills Gap, on Saturday, June 5, 2004, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Cranfills Gap with the Rev. Terry Atkins officiating. She was born, the youngest of eight children, to Kittel Tobias and Berthe Karine Swenson Knudson, on July 5, 1911, at the family home in the Cove Springs community. She passed away on Thursday, June 3, 2004, at a Clifton hospital. Ruth was baptised in September 1911 at the Rock Church by Pastor G.G. Odegard. She was confirmed in 1926 by Pastor J.A. Urnes at the Rock Church in a ceremony where Norwegian was spoken. Ruth married Charlie B. Allen on Jan. 16, 1935, at the St. Olaf Parsonage in Cranfills Gap by Pastor Urnes. To this union, three children were born, Geneva Kathryn, Wayne Milldard, and Phyllis Ann. During the early years of marriage the couple lived east of Clifton; however, they spent most of their married life on the Knudson family farm, living in the house in which she was born. She expressed her great love of family in many ways. Allen cared for her aging parents and older sister Camilla when they were ill. Later during her mid-life, she visited frequently with her husband’s parents in Clifton. Long conversations were had under the mulberry tree in Grandpa Allen’s lawn chairs. After her widowed mother-in-law moved to the Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home, Knudson visited every Saturday bringing crisp, starched dresses and family news. Allen had a talent for sewing and was a perfectionist in everything she made. Another talent was cooking-for her 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. Going to Grandma’s house was always a special event, be it for a week’s vacation at the farm or an hour on Sunday afternoons. Warm bread might be waiting, but you could always count on her wonderful cookies. Allen also had a deep value and pride in her Norwegian roots, which she instilled in her children. To her death she had a keen memory of family and community history. This family historian will be deeply missed. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Charlie B. Allen; five brothers; and one sister. Survivors include one brother, Irvin Knudson of Fort Worth; daughter, Geneva Finstad and her husband, Guy, of Cranfills Gap, and their children, Sherry Roberts, Gary, Terry, and Barry Finstand, and their families; son, Wayne Allen and his wife, Linda, of Clifton, and their children, Stephanie Rains, Amanda Jermstad, Amy and Mitchell and their children; and daughter, Phyllis Rieser and her husband, Edward, of Sherman, and their daughters, Karina, Katrina, and Nikkolina Rieser. Pallbearers were her nephews, Otto Knudson, Trent Knudson, Ronnie Knudson, Wayne Polk, Craig Lehew, and Jim Allen TenEyck. Memorials can be made to St. Olaf Lutheran Church’s Endownment Fund. Interment icon was at St. Olaf Rock Church cemetery in Cranfills Gap under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home in Clifton.

Robert Lee Terrell
Funeral services for Robert Lee (Rusty) Terrell, 79, of Cuero, were held Monday, June 7, 2004, at Freund Funeral Home Chapel. Interment icon followed at Hillside cemetery, Cuero. Terrell died Thursday, June 3, 2004. He was born Feb. 7, 1925, in Clifton, to Robert I. and Beulah Mae Williams Terrell. He was a tool pusher in the oil field trade, working for Sellers Lease Service in Flatonia. He was a Baptist by faith. Terrell was preceded in death by his parents; by sister Dorothy Deaver; by brothers Billie Joe Terrell, Vernon Terrell, and Kenneth Terrell; and by one grandchild. He is survived by his wife, Lillian Rodriguez Terrell of Cuero; daughter Barbara Shutter of Victoria; stepdaughters Shirley Alvarez, Jo Ann Anzaldus, Lillian Nava, and Judy Guerrero of Cuero; stepsons Woodrow Salles and James Salles of Cuero; sisters Ruby Faye Sparks of Waco, Betty Johnson of Geary, Okla., and Carol Hunnicutt of Valley Mills; brothers Donald Terrell of Clifton, Jackie Terrell of Clifton, and Johnny Terrell of Valley Mills; 19 grandchildren; and 11 grandchildren. Pallbearers were Ernest Nava, Gerardo Alvarez, James Salles, Kerry Franklin, Clifton Torres, Freddie Guerrero, and Woodrow Salles. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, was in charge of arrangements.

Bobby James Wheeler
Funeral services were held for Bobby James Wheeler, 68, of Denton, on Saturday, June 5, 2004, in the Lawson Funeral Home Chapel in Meridian with the Rev. Charles Collett officiating. Wheeler was born on Nov. 27, 1935, in Greenwood, Wise County, a son of the late Foss and Thelma Pitts Wheeler. He passed away Wednesday afternoon, June 2, 2004, in a Denton hospital after a lengthy illness. Wheeler moved to Morgan at a young age to be raised and finish school. He worked for many years as a truck driver, hauling cattle and later for Chemical Lime before his health forced him to retire. Wheeler married Virgina “Ginger” Morris on May 18, 1978, in Fort Worth. He was a member of the Morgan First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Ginger Wheeler of Denton; daughters, Lela Kelley and husband, Clifford of their children, Charla and B.J. Kelley of Aquilla; step-son, Steve Colby and wife, Ann, and their children, Christine and Jennifer of Carrollton; sister-in-law, Pauline Wheeler of Morgan; a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Pallbearers were Sonny Pitts, Russell Petter, Sonny Long, James Ratliff, Everett Farr, and Kevin Farr. Honorary pallbearers were Charles Dickey, Don Harris, Floyd Pitts, and Charlie Farr. Interment icon was in the Morgan cemetery with Lawson Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Marshal Esteen Mitchell
Funeral services were held for Marshal Esteen Mitchell, 91, on Monday, May 10, 2004, at First Baptist Church in Clifton with the Rev. Jerry Smith officiating. Mitchell, one of four sons to D.C. and Minta Mae Riddle Mitchell, was born on Aug. 18, 1912, in the community of Mosheim. He passed away on Friday, May 7, 2004. Mitchell grew up in Mosheim and accpeted the Lord in the Mosheim Baptist Church in 1925 and was baptised there. He graduated from Mosheim HIgh School He married Charline Cummings on March 19, 1938, in Gatesville. The couple made their home in Mosheim where Mitchell continued to farm and ranch. He also worked through the years at the munitions plnt in McGrego and in Weatherford. He worked for 25 years at the General Tire and Rubber Company in Waco as an Industrial Mechanic. During these years in Mosheim, the couple had two sons, Charles and John Marshal In 1974, the couple built a new home in Clifton and become a part of the community. They still kept their ties in the Mosheim Community where they were vitally active in the Mosheim Baptist Church. Mitchell served as one of the trustees for the Mosheim Community Center and the Water Supply Company of Mosheim. Mitchell was also one of the leaders in the annual chili supper for the community center in Mosheim. He was dually aligned with the Valley Mills Masonic Lodge and the Clifton Masonic Lodge. He was an active member of the Clifton Lions Club and served in a variety of capacities through the years from director to lion tamer. In 1982, the Mitchells were awarded the Family Heritage Certificate by the State of Texas for keeping in operation a family farm that has been passed down through the generations. They were honored this past year for their long years of service to the Mosheim Baptist Church and the Mosheim community. Mitchell was a member of the First Baptist Church of Clifton at the time of his death. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; his wife; and grandson, Jeremy. Survivors include his two sons, Charles Mitchell and his wife, Mary, of Beaumont and John Marshal Mitchell and his wife, Vickie of Mosheim; two grandchildren, Meagan Bernard and her husband, David, of Beaumont and Jeffrey Mitchel of Austin; and one great-grandson, Gage Bernard of Beaumont. Memorials can be made to Mosheim Community Center, 10550 FM 215 Valley Mills, Texas 76689. Interment icon was at Valley Mills cemetery under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home of Clifton.

Warren Blake Lambert
Graveside funeral services for Warren Blake Lambert, 42, of Colorado and formerly of Aquilla, were held Thursday, June 3, 2004, at Scott’s Chapel cemetery in Aquilla, with Glenn Gray officiating. Lambert died Friday, May 28, 2004, in Colorado. He was born May 27, 1962, in Clifton, the son of Marvin and Virginia (Allen) Lambert. He grew up in Aquilla, and graduated from Aquilla High School. He attended Hill Junior College and Texas State Technical College. He was an auto mechanic by trade, and was a member of the Church of Christ. Lambert was preceded in death by his father, Marvin Lambert, and his brother, Ernie Lambert. He is survived by his mother, Virginia Lambert of Whitney; children Angela Jean and John Blake Lambert of Laguna Park; brother Tony Lambert of Aquilla; and sisters Shirley White of Groesbeck and Vivian Pendergrass of Lake Stephens, Wash. Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors, Whitney, was in charge of arrangements.

Perney Allen Chaney
Funeral services were held for Perney Allen Chaney, 81, on Monday, May 24, 2004, at Grand Old Gospel Lighthouse in Clifton with the Rev. Ron Roberts officiating. Chaney was born on Sept. 19, 1922, in Comanche to Allen W. and Irea (Jamar) Chaney-Hammond. He passed away on May 21, 2004, at Scott & White Hospital in Temple. In his last hours, he was surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren. Chaney served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 493rd Enginner (Heavy Shop) on the Island of New Caledonia in the Asiatic Pacific. While in the military, he obtained the rank of Technician 5. His decorations include the Asiatic Pacific Service ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Victory Medal. Chaney also worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Arizona and Montana and the Santa Fe Railroad in the Mills County area. He was self-employed for a time and worked for Chemical Lime in Clifton before retiring. On Nov. 16, 1946, he married Nancy Elizabeth Pierce. The couple lived in Comanche, Midland, San Saba, Goldthwaite, Meridian, and Clifton. In his retirement, Chaney enjoyed spending time with his family, as well as fishing and playing dominos. He always enjoyed telling stories to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren about his younger days and fishing trips. Chaney was a member of Grace Memorial Baptist Church and a life member of the Robert E. Binford VFW Post #8553 in Clifton. Adored husband, beloved father, loving father-in-law, cherished grandfather, and great friend-these are the ways that Perney Allen Chaney will always be remembered by his family and friends. We love you, babe! He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Charlene Tigner; and five step-brothers. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Chaney; children, Douglas Allen Chaney and his wife, Martha, of Cranfills Gap; Gordon Dwight Chaney and his wife, Marge, of Copperas Cove; Marsha Evans and her husband, Curtis, of Cranfills Gap; Kelly Mahoney and her husband, Richard, of Clifton; grandchildren, Allen Evans and his wife, Rayleen, of Speegleville, Michael Evans of Waco; Richard Allen Chaney of Corsicana; Jeremy Barree of Clifton; Nancy Truitt and her husband, Eddie, of Moss Point, Miss.; Ralisa Randall and her husband, Ron, of Goodyear, Ariz.; Karen Denise Chaney, and Robbie Kessler of Waco; Elizabeth Brown and her husband, Mike, of Tyler; Chrissy McCourt and husband, Eric, of Clifton; Angela Evans of Brownwood and Rebecca Mahoney of Clifton; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; sister, Nell Walk and her husband, Ora, of Dallas; and brother Aloyn (Jack) Chaney of Mullin. Memorials can be made to Grace Memorial Baptist Church, Clifton or to the Military Order of the Purple Heart at 1421 CR 4145, Cranfills Gap, TX 76637. Interment icon was held at Clifton cemetery with full military honors provided by the VFW and American Legion. Arrangements were made through Clifton Funeral Home of Clifton.
