Herman Carl Wurbs
Funeral services were held for Herman Carl Wurbs, 81, of College Station on Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Caleb Schoeneck of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church officiating. One of six children, Wurbs was born to Max H. and Ida S. Wurbs, both of Germany, on Feb. 26, 1923, in Hamilton. He passed away on Thursday, June 17, 2004, in Anderson Hospital in Sheridan. Wurbs was confirmed to the Christian faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clifton on June 5, 1938. As a child, he attended school in the small town of Aliman, near Hamilton. In 1936, the family moved to their farm north of Clifton on the Bosque River, where he grew up. He attended Cooper School until it closed, and transferred to the Clifton schools. Wurbs graduated from Clifton High School on May 8, 1942, and entered the U.S. Army Air Force in October 1942. He served as a sergeant and specialist electrician for planes during the Normandy air offensive and subsequent Rhineland battles. Among his recognitions were the Bronze and Silver Star Medals. On Nov. 13, 1948, he married
Edna Maxine Wurbs of Madisonville. The couple settled in Bryan, where Wurbs had begun a career at the Lone Star Gas Company as a service specialist. He retired from the company after 38 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine Wurbs; his parents, Max and Ida Wurbs; and three brothers, Max G. Wurbs, Clearence Wurbs, and Herbert Wurbs; and a half-sister, Elise Wurbs Young. Survivors include his three children, Ralph Allen, Eva Jane, and Donna Gale; his brother, Frank O. Wurbs and his wife, Pat, of Clifton; his sister, Mildred Newman and her husband, Buster, of McGregor; two sons-in-law; a daughter-in-law; many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Pallbearers were Frank Wurbs Jr., Jeremy Wurbs, James Taylor, Darren Hibbs, Andrew Varga, and Dan Kelber. Interment
was at Bryan City cemetery under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home of College Station.
Josephine Gordon Robinson
Funeral services were held for Josephine Gordon Robinson of Crockett, on Thursday, June 17, 2004, in the China Spring cemetery with the Rev. Bill Schibler officiating. She was born to Clarence E. Gordon and Charlsie A. McLennan and passed away on Monday, June 14, 2004, in Crockett. Her family members included her husband, John C. Robinson; brother and sister-in-law, Herbert McLennan Gordon and wife, Floriede. Robinson was affiliated with the First Christian Church in McGregor. Survivors include nephew, Donald J. Gordon and wife, Judy, of Crockett; great nephew, Laughlin Gordon of Montrose, Co.; and great niece, Donna Gordon Kaspar of Crockett. Interment
was at China Spring cemetery in China Spring under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.
Trula Ficklin
Funeral services for Trula Corean Carlson Ficklin, 87, of Valley Mills, were held Thursday, July 8, 2004, at Mosheim Methodist Church, Pastor Denise Rogers officiating. Interment
followed in Valley Mills cemetery. Ficklin died Monday, July 5, 2004, at Goodall-Witcher Hospital. She was born July 19, 1916, in Bosque County, near Cranfills Gap, the daughter of Martin and Anna Tergerson Carlson. She was baptized into the Lutheran Faith at the Rock Church near Cranfills Gap on Aug. 26, 1916. She was confirmed at St. Olaf Lutheran Church on June 14, 1931. She married
Andrew Evans Ficklin on Nov. 19, 1938, in the Lutheran parsonage at Cranfills Gap. To this union two children were born, Joe Bob and Anna Beth Ficklin. She enjoyed her life as a housewife and mother while her children were growing up. She worked at Sprayberry Manufacturing in Valley Mills, and later at Laguna Park, and for the Valley Mills Independent School District. She enjoyed her yard, gardening, crocheting, quilting and embroidering, visiting with dear neighbor Mary, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ficklin was preceded in death by her husband, Evans Ficklin, in April 1985; daughter Anna Beth Rowe in May 2001; two sisters, Constance Hinton and Jewel Surely; and her parents. She is survived by her son, Joe Bob and wife Norma Ficklin of Valley Mills; grandson Andy and wife Carolyn Ficklin of Valley Mills; granddaughters Karen and husband Darren Hanson of Cranfills Gap, Christy Rowe of Houston, Amanda and husband Brian Johnson of Pasadena, and Alinda and husband Thomas Cox of Jacksboro; three great-grandchildren, Wade Hanson, Marti Hanson, and Ashley Cox; one brother, Martin Carlson of Hamilton; three sisters, Hilma Billman of Clifton, Juanita Johnson of Midland, and Faye Bryn of Shreveport, La.; and a host of nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were John Bruington, Andy Ficklin, Wade Hanson, Thomas Cox, Darren Hanson, and Brian Johnson. Clifton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Vivian Ruth Young-New
Funeral services were held for Vivian Ruth Young New of Clifton, formerly of Waco, 80, on Monday, July 12, 2004, in the Clifton Funeral Home Chapel in Clifton. New was born on June 23, 1924 in Kaufman County to Robert Saulters and Eddie Jane Webb. She passed away on Friday, July 9, in Clifton. She attended Crawford Elementary School in the 1930s. She married
Willie D. Young on Dec. 23, 1945, in Lorena. During her life, she was a housewife, a janitor at Hillcreast Hospital, and a self-employed professional barber. Her church affiliation was penecostal. She was preceded in death by her husband Willie D. (Joe) Young. Survivors included her husband, William New of Clifton; sons, Carroll Young and wife, Judy, of Belton, and Ray and wife Lynne Young of Lorena; brother, J.W. Saulters of Waco; four grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Pallbearers were David Camden, Brian Young, Aaron Young, and Michael Young. Burial was held in the Rosemoung cemetery in Waco arranged by the Clifton Funeral Home in Clifton.
Selma Pauline Wiese
Funeral services for Selma Pauline (Finson) Wiese, 94, of Cranfills Gap, were held Monday, July 5, 2004, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Cranfills Gap Pastor Terry Atkins officiating. Interment
followed at St. Olaf cemetery. She died in Clifton Saturday, July 3, 2004. Born Selma Pauline Finson on June 16, 1910, in Hamilton County, she was the daughter of Sam and Emilie Pederson Finson. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith on Aug. 21, 1910, at the Rock Church, and was confirmed May 25, 1925, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Cranfills Gap. She married
Henry Louis Wiese on Oct. 25, 1931, at the St. Olaf parsonage. To this union three children were born: Thelma Louise (Wiese) Dunlap, Margie Estelle (Wiese) Mooney, and Harold Sidney Wiese. The couple, who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Oct. 31, 1981, lived in Bosque County all their married
lives. She entered nurses’ training at Meridian Holt Hospital in November 1955, and received her Licensed Vocational Nurse license in March 1957. She worked for a time in Meridian, then began work at Goodall-Witcher Hospital in Clifton, where she worked 17˝ years before retiring due to ill health. She had been a resident of Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home for the past two years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Wiese; daughter Margie Mooney; infant grandson Harold Joseph Wiese; sisters Clara White and Ella Jorgenson; and brothers Peer Finson and Edwin Finson. Her pastimes included painting cup-towels and selling them, or giving them to her friends and neighbors. She was an avid cookie-baker, and her oatmeal, chocolate chip, and tea cakes were loved by all. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Louise and Raleigh Dunlap; son and daughter-in-law Harold and Preshie Wiese; grandsons Ronnie Dunlap, Audia Mooney, David Mooney, Hershell Mooney, and Russell Wiese; granddaughters Debbie Dunlap and Opal Mooney Smith; sisters-in-law Agnes Wiese, Ernie Samuelson, and Clara Samuelson; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Pallbearers were Kenneth Wiese, Kenny Wiese, Russell Wiese, David Mooney, Michael Jorgenson, and Troy Sorenson. The family requests memorials be made to the St. Olaf Lutheran Church Endowment Fund, the Rock Church cemetery Fund, Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home, or to any choice of then donor. Clifton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Earnestine Raper
Funeral services were held for Earnestine Raper, 87, of Dike, on Friday, July 30, 2004, at West Oaks Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Rhoades officiating. Raper was born to Carl Hardin and Joella Thompson Caldwell in Bosque County on Oct. 8, 1916. She passed away on Saturday, July 24, 2004, at St. Mark’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. She married
Wallace Raper in Houston on Feb. 21, 1962. She was an owner and operator of a dry cleaning service as well as a homemaker. She was a member of the Extension Education Club and a member of the Central Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Raper on March 12, 1980, and a sister-in-law, Wilma Caldwell. Survivors include nephews, Ronald Caldwell of Dike and Gerald Caldwell of Sulphur Springs; nieces, Sandra Henson and Wanda Cade of Sulphur Springs; brother, Carl Caldwell of Sulphur Springs; and several great nieces and nephews. Memorials can be made to the Central Baptist Church Building Fund. Interment
was held at Conner cemetery under the direction of West Oaks Funeral Home in Sulphur Springs.
Cynthia Finstad
Funeral services were held for Cynthia Sommerfeld Finstad, 52, on Saturday, July 10, 2004, at the Grand Old Gospel Lighthouse in Clifton with the Rev. Bill Schibler officiating. Finstad was born to Lawrence and Sydonia Zander Sommerfeld on Feb 15, 1952, in Waco. She passed away on Wednesday, July 7, 2004, near Waco. She attended school in Clifton and graduated from Clifton High School in 1971. She was married
twice: Richard Lilley (1971) and John Finstand (1980). Finstad worked at Walls for a number of years; then, in January 1996, she worked for Colorite until her death. She resided in Cranfills Gap, and was a meber of St. Olaf and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Norse. Her hobbies included ceramics, fishing, swimming, and camping. She loved her grandkids. Survivors include ex-husband, John Finstad of Cranfills Gap; two daughters, Mandy Ringo of Clifton and Dana Jorgenson of Clifton; seven grandchildren, Nathan, Alex, Jason, Hunter, Kelsey, Tiffany, and William; one step-daughter, Jana Finstad of Clifton; two brothers, Howard Sommerfeld of Waco; Jimmy Sommerfeld of Lake Whitney; one sister, Ellen Shields of Lake Whitney; two nieces and two nephews; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Pallbearers included Gordon Bowlin, Emil Schwartz, Richard Ringo, Milton Zillmer, Anthony Gerad, and Mike Nelson. Interment
was held at Clifton Memorial under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.
J.M. (Buster) Vickrey
Funeral services were held for John Morris (Buster) Vickrey on Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at the First United Methodist Church in Clifton with Dr. Charles Rice and the Rev. Pat Dietrich officiating. Vickrey was born the third of eight children of John Floyd and Belle Howard Vickrey on Sept. 1, 1912, in Mosheim. He passed away on Sunday, June 27, 2004, in Clifton. Vickrey was the grandson of early Bosque County pioneers, William Vickrey, who walked alongside a covered wagon to Central Texas from Walker County, Ga., in 1870, and Mary Ann Robertson Vickrey whose great-uncle Sterling C. Robertson helped settle a large portion of Texas in the 1830s. Vickery graduated from Mosheim High School. On June 11, 1938, he married
Louise Ficklin, who preceded him in death in 1991. He was involved in farming and ranching his entire life. For many years, he raised registered polled Hereford cattle. He was also a long-time member of the Farm Bureau. He was a third generation Methodist. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise, in 1991; his parents; and seven brothers and sisters, Maurine Peterson, Fred Vickrey, Corrine Johnson, Claudine Armstrong, Weldon Vickrey, Alleene Gilmore, and Earline Vickrey. Survivors include his daughter, Vicki Vickrey Thiele and her husband, J.W. (Jay) Thiele, and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Kevin Balch, George Clements, Tommy Gaskamp, Charles Mitchell, John Mitchell, and James Storrs. Interment
was in the Valley Mills cemetery udner the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.
Randy Doyle Herzog
Funeral services were held for Randy Doyle Herzog, 42, of Clifton on Friday, July 9, 2004, at Immanuel Luthern Church in Clifton with the Rev. Peter Diebenow officiating. Herzog was born on Saturday, Feb. 10, 1962, in Clifton to Raymond and Janice Berosik Herzog. He passed away on Tuesday, July 6, 2004, in Clifton. Herzog was baptisted on Sunday, March 4, 1962, at Immanuel Lutheran Church by the Rev. W.F. Rolf. He attended Lutheran Elementary North Parochial School in Houston. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Immanuel on April 11, 1976 by the Rev. R.J. Teichmiller. Herzog attended Clifton Middle School and graduated from Clifton High School in May 1981. He owned Herzog Body Shop in Meridian, where he worked since he attended high school. Herzog liked to play football, pool, volleyball, soccer, and go bowling with his daughter, Rebecca. He loved to cook and be around his family and friends. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clifton. Survivors include his daughter, Rebecca Leanne Herzog; parents, Janice and Raymond Herzog; brother, Mark Herzog; sister, Susan Bekkelund and her husband, Buddy; nephew, Keith Bekkelund and his wife, Summer; one great nephew, Austin Bekkelund, and one great niece, Jacelynn Slagle, all of Clifton. Pallbearers included Rodney Wagner, Brent Belcher, Burt Cook, Felipe Lozano, Marcus Anaya, and Gary Howard. Interment
