Susan Sundy
Susan Jean Sundy, 57, of Clifton, passed away Saturday, Sept. 30, at a Dallas Hospital. She was born June 23, 1949 in Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of Kennerth Marvel and Jeanette Marie Gilholy Harris. She grew up and attended school in Levitown, Pa. before moving to North Carolina, and then to Texas. On Oct. 27, 1990, she married
Larry Albert Sundy in Grand Prairie and they later moved to the Clifton area. She was a homemaker and enjoyed working in her yard, fishing, and bargain hunting at garage sales. Those who knew her say that she was also known for her practical jokes, and was always willing to help anyone in need. Sunday was a member of the First Baptist Church in Laguna Park. She was preceeded in death by her parents and one sister, Sandra Harris. Sundy is survived by her husband, Larry Sundy of Clifton; three sons Josh Williams, David Zdrojewski, and Chuck Sundy and wife Karla, all of Clifton; three daughters, Jeanie Valenzuela and husband John of Rockwall, Debbie Ruyle and husband Danny of Dallas, and Lisa Sundy of Irving; two brothers, Kenny Harris and wife Luann of North Carolina and Steve Harris and wife Sue of Pennsylvania; her Aunt Elsie, and Cousin Pinky; several nieces, nephews, and special friends Doris Johnson of Clifton, and Barb Barnick of Decatur, Ill.
Charles Larson
Memorial services for Charles Owen Larson were held Monday, Sept. 25, in the Clifton Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Kramer of Trinity Lutheran officiating. Larson, 62, formerly of Clifton, passed away Friday, Sept. 22. Larson was born on June 3, 1944. He attended Clifton High School, Baylor University, and the University of Houston. He worked for Shell Oil in Houston. In his late thirties, he suffered from a diabetic coma. He was preceded in death by his mother Opal Young Larson and his father Arnell Larson. Larson is survived by his brother James Larson of Gause; Arnell Larson of Waco; and Robert Schrader of Clifton; and Karen Sadler of Clifton.
Clara Demler
Memorial services for Clara Demler, 83, of Clifton, were held on Thursday, Sept. 28, at the Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home. Demler went to be with her Lord on Sept. 27. Demler was born Feb. 12, 1923, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Bernhard and Anna (Kelter) Dehn. She joined four brothers and sisters, including Arthur, Eleanora, Henry, and Naomi. She attended St. Martini Church where she was baptized, confirmed, and active for many years. She worked at the Makah Indian Reservation, where she helped train them for management skills enabling them to get funding to build hundreds of housing units, and even more important “family” relations. She married
Walter Delmer in 1972. She described him as one whose depth of loving, caring, and inimitable wit not only never faltered, but grew, even during years of illness and anxiety attacks. An ever bigger blessing was his ever-growing faith and love for God, which drew the two even closer together. During years of retirement, she had lived in McAllen and Crawford. She was a member of the Crawford St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death in 2005. Demler is survived by her three daughters, Janet Bein, Mary Susan Sheaves, and Carol B. Robinson; four sons, William Bein, Walter Demler Jr., James Demler, David Delmer, and Randy Demler; a sister, Grace Mertes; and several grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Foss Funeral Home.
‘Jackie’ Dickey
Funeral services for Jacquelyn “Jackie” Dickey, 82, of Clifton, were held on Wednesday, Sept. 27, at Our Lady of the Lake Episcopal Church in Laguna Park, followed by burial at Laurel Land cemetery in Fort Worth. She passed away on Sept. 24, at Goodall-Witcher Nursing Facility. Dickey was born Nov. 8, 1923, in Hereford, to James C. “Wilks” Wilkison and Winnie Warren of Friona. She attended Texas Tech University where she was a cheerleader and member of Tri Delta Sorority. After graduating in 1945 with a B.B.A. in Business Administration, she married
Warren G. White and moved to Fort Worth in 1950. She was involved with the Architects’ Wives Association and Fort Worth Junior Woman’s Club. In 1976, she moved to Laguna Park on Lake Whitney with husband, John C. “Jack” Dickey, to join her mother’s business, Wilkison-Dickey Real Estate. She was a founding member, treasurer, and Sunday School teacher of Our Lady of the Lake Episcopal Church. Dickey moved to Clifton in 1996 and became a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She was involved in the Bosque Conservatory, Clifton Civic Improvement Society, and volunteered for many years at Goodall-Witcher Nursing Facility. She was an avid bridge player, and will be remembered by many as a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, and friend. She was preceded in death by her son, Mark Weston White and husbands, Warren White and Jack Dickey. She is survived by daughters Sheila White Welch and husband Ned of Clifton; and Carla White Greenwood and husband, Ward of Austin; stepson John Dickey and wife, Helen Mooty of Clear Lake; grandchildren Jacquelyn, Bailey, and Carson Greenwood, and Megan Welch. Memorials may be made to Goodall-Witcher Nursing Facility or the Bosque Conservatory. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.
Lonnie Reesing
Funeral services for Lonnie Jeanette McFadden Reesing, 89, of Clifton, will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at First United Methodist Church of Clifton, with Rev. Tom Beaty presiding. Interment
in Clifton Cemetary will follow. Reesing passed away at the Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home on Sunday, Oct. 1. Reesing was born on Oct. 31, 1916, in Clifton, to Lonnie McFadden, and Agnes Jeanette Hanson. She attended the Norse School from 1922 to 1934. On. Dec. 19, 1945, she married
Alfred Raymond Reesing and the two had three children. From 1916 to 1945, Reesing lived in Norse, moving to Gruver from 1946 to 1947, and back to Norse in 1948. She was a homemaker and worked with the First Baptist Daycare. She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church from birth through 1950, then becoming a member of First United Methodist Church in 1951. Those who knew her said that she enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and visiting and entertaining relatives and friends. She devoted her life to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and she loved all children. Reesing is preceeded in death by her husband, and her sister Mildred McFadden. She is survived by her children, Robert Reesing and wife, Pat of Mart; David Reesing and wife Dawn of Irving; Paul Reesing of Clifton; grandchildren, Lori Spake, Rhonda Fitch, Jennifer Reesing, Justin Reesing, Eric Reesing, Matt Steger, and Chris Steger; seven great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Eunice Cooksey, Francis Reesing, numerous neices, nephews, and cousins. Pallbearers included Justin Reesing, Eric Reesing, Jerry Tom Reesing, Lloyd Homerstad, Dean Powell, and Jerry Heath. Funeral services were under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.
Leon ‘Pete’ Eckert
Funeral services for Leon “Pete” Eckert of the Cayote community near Valley Mills were held on Saturday, Sept. 30, at Zion United Church in Womack, with Dr. Charles T. Rice officiating. Mildred Conrad was organist, and David Conrad brought memories. Interment
followed in Clifton Memorial Park. Eckert passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 27, at Goodall-Witcher Hospital, at the age of 90. Leon Gustav Louis Eckert was born April 18, 1916, to Louis A. and Anna Thiele Eckert. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in the Bismarck community. He attended Cayote School and enjoyed basketball, baseball, and track. He completed Clifton High School After graduation, he farmed with his father. He enjoyed raising farm animals of all kinds, especially poultry. He owned and operated a sheep/goat shearing rig. He worked at the Valley Mills gin during cotton season and traveled to West Texas to work in the harvest fields with his uncle. Those who knew him best said that he was most comfortable out-of-doors and was interested in nature of all kinds. His hobbies were fishing and hunting. He loved to reminisce about bygone days. He was proud to be part of a large extended family and was always eager to visit with friends and neighbors. Although his eyesight failed in his later years, he strove to be as independent as possible. He used to help care for his aging parents during their last years. He was a member of Zion United Church, where he served on the Council. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Edna Kruse, and infant twins, Christina and Huldina; and nephew Marvin Wiede. Eckert is survived by his sister, Elenore Wiede and Clifton; nephews, Kenneth Kruse and wife, Betty of Clifton; and Lloyd Wiede and wife, Amy of Irving; niece, Kathleen Kruse of Clifton; and niece-in-law, Glenda Wiede of Clifton; great and great-great nieces and nephews; several first cousins; and an aunt, Estelle (Mrs. Herbert) Thiele. Pallbearers were Stephen Kruse, Bryan Kruse, Matthew Wiede, and Grant Wiede, great-nephews, Ray Cummings, and James Dreyer. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.
Lou Hicks
Funeral services for Lou Hicks, 83, of Valley Mills, were held Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, at First United Methodist Church in Valley Mills. Interment
was in Valley Mills cemetery under the direction of Foss Funeral Home of Valley Mills.
Lou Bell Hicks was born July 3, 1926, in Motley County, Texas. She was the daughter of William T. and Ludie Pearl (Brown) Bell. She passed away Sept. 16, 2009, in a Clifton Nursing Home.
She was married
to Ted Hicks on Dec. 11, 1943, in Lampasas. He preceded her in death in 1983. She was a member of the Valley Mills First United Methodist Church. Before her health failed, she loved to fish, hunt, and work with the PTA. Lou and Ted Hicks were instrumental in starting the Valley Mills Riding Club.
Survivors include her children, Jimmy Hicks and wife, Johnett, of Waco, Deadra Blackford and husband, Aubrey, of Valley Mills, Cindy Hoffman and husband, Don, of Clifton, Kim West of Glen Rose, Tanya Beck and husband, Bruce, of Amarillo, and Renee’ Rodler of Illinois; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers are Ty West, Kevin West, Garrett Trammell, Kolbey Carpenter, Harrison Trammell, Blake Bishop, and Matthew Sterling.
Honorary Pallbearers include Kellie Herring, Brooke Hillin, Brandon Pitts, Barry Jack Denton, Brandie Trammell, Ashley Carpenter, Shanna West, April Sterling, Brian Sterling, Jason Hicks, Julie Canales, and Jordan Delaney.
Johnny Powers
Johnny Powers, age 67, of Houston, formerly of Valley Mills, passed away Monday, Aug. 31, 2009, in a Houston Hospital. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, Sept. 4, at Valley Mills First Baptist Church under the direction of Foss Funeral Home. Interment
will be at Valley Mills cemetery.
Powers was born Feb. 17, 1942, in Abilene, the son of Guy and Louise (Watson) Powers.
He was a 1960 graduate of Valley Mills High School and a 1966 graduate of North Texas State University with a B.A. degree in journalism. Throughout his career in journalism, Powers received many awards and accolades from a number of different news and journalism agencies, including the University of Missouri Davenport Fellowship. He traveled the world throughout Europe and Southeast Asia.
During his career, he was a reporter for the Texas City Daily Sun; public relations for Gulf States Utilities in Beaumont; Galveston bureau reporter for the Houston Business Journal; editor of the Dallas Business Journal; editor and vice president of the New Orleans City Business Journal; columnist for Fort Lauderdale News & Sun-Sentinel; business editor at the Beaumont Enterprise, later moved to the editorial desk to write editorials and columns, then was named Austin bureau chief to cover state government for four Hearst-owned newspapers during the Ann Richards administration. Later he moved to Montana as editor and publisher of the Big Horn County News, near the Custer battlefield and Crow Indian reservation. Afterward, he became assistant city editor at the Amarillo Globe-News and then copy editor at the Houston Chronicle. He retired from the Houston Chronicle in 2007. Powers also had served in the U.S. Coast Guard in Alameda, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his father, Guy Powers, in 1981.
Survivors include his wife, Loan Powers of Houston; mother, Louise Powers of Valley Mills; a son, Dylan of Knoxville, Tenn.; a sister, Sherry and husband, James Dollins, of Mansfield; and a nephew, Shannon Dollins also of Mansfield.
Stetson Wyatt DeChaume
Stetson Wyatt DeChaume, infant son of Jimmy Matthew DeChaume and Heather Bailey, passed away at Cook’s Children Hospital on Aug. 22. Memorial services will be held at a later date.
Stetson was born June 5, 2009, in Fairfield, Ark.
Survivors include his parents, Matt and Heather both of Joshua; two brothers, Zachary and Jackson DeChaume both of Joshua; grandparents, Naomi and Randy Bailey, Paul and Deborah Adams. Stetson was preceded in death by his grandfather, Jim DeChaume.
Arrangements were by Foss Funeral Home, Valley Mills.
