Jack Martin
Jack Martin, age 91, of Valley Mills, passed away in a local hospital. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 12, at the First United Methodist Church. Interment icon was at the Valley Mills cemetery under the direction of Foss Funeral Home. Visitation was held from 6 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home. Martin was born Nov. 28, 1914, in Granbury. He was the son of George Perry and Hettie (Durant) Martin. He was the youngest of five children. He married Oleta Flemister of Jacksboro on Dec. 17, 1938. Martin lived in Jacksboro for awhile being employed by his brother-in-law in the oil refinery business. After marrying Oleta, they moved to Orange Grove where he was taught the skills of his trade as heavy equipment mechanic and certified welder with Flowers Machine & Tool . In the early 40s he worked for the U.S. Core of Engineers in the Austin area and later settled in the Valley Mills area where he was employed in the road and bridge construction for Shillings, and T.L. James McKinney Construction where he worked 30 years. Martin was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Lewis and Lee Martin; his sisters Juanita and Bertha Churchill; and grandbaby Kristi Lynn Martin. Survivors include his wife Oleta Martin of Valley Mills; a son Perry Martin of Granbury; a daughter Sherry Martin and husband, Sam Elrod of Granbury; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren including Greg and Danielle Elrod of San Marcus; Geoff and Shelly Elrod; daughters Summer and Savannah of Lake City, Colo.; Matt and Lisa Martin and their children Meagan, Jack Ryan, and Emily of Clifton; Melanie and David Gloff and their children Grant, Garrett, and Madison of Clifton. Pallbearers included Shaun Daniels, Greg Elrod, Geoff Elrod, David Gloff, Matt Martin, Billy Reed Powers. Honorary Pallbearers were Darrell Graves, Bruce Raburn, Cletis Wall, and Fred Ward.

Gene Ann Smith
Memorial services for Gene Ann Smith were held on Wednesday, Jan. 11, at 11 a.m., at Saint Andrews Catholic Church in Fort Worth. Grave side services were at 4 p.m. on Wednesday in Valley Mills cemetery, under the direction of Foss Funeral Home. Smith, was born, Gene Ann Evans on March 17, 1937 in San Angelo, Texas, to Annagene and Charles Harold Evans, Jr. She had a happy and positive childhood with many fond family and grandparent memories. The family moved to Goldsthwaite, where she graduated from High School. She attended the University of Texas at Austin her freshman year, and during the summer, met her future husband, Thomas “Tommy” P. Smith. The couple was married the last Saturday of June, 1958. They moved to Fort Worth where she graduated from University of Texas at Arlington, and Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. Smith was a secondary school Social Studies teacher at Mansfield, Texas, retiring in 2001. Her career choice was influenced by her interest in British history. She was a member of Fort Worth Woman’s Club. In 2002, she was recognized as a 50 year survivor of Type 1 diabetes by the Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard Medical School. She was also a Breast cancer survivor. She was a strong person with a positive zest for life and was looking forward to a “lot of grandmothering.” Mumsie will be missed at her grandchildren’s activities. Smith was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband, Thomas P. Smith and her dog Ruffhauser; her sons, Russell W. Smith and his wife Linda; Kevin B. Smith and his wife Lisa; her daughter, Melanie Fram and her husband Fred; her grandchildren, Leanne, Max, Madie, and Meredith. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to their local Diabetes association.

Gloria Thornton Moseley
Gloria Thornton Moseley, 84, of Norse, passed away on Jan. 6. Services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 8, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Beverly Blackman-Mounce officiating. She was born Oct. 18, 1921, in Fort Worth. She met her future husband, Thomas B. Moseley, Jr., at a dance, and they married on Aug. 10, 1940 and settled in Dallas. In the 1970s, the couple moved to the ranch as they affectionately called it, near Clifton. Moseley was an accomplished pianist, mother of eight, grandmother of nine, great-grandmother of four, and great-great-grandmother of two. She taught school for many years and was an active member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. For years, she wrote The Crossroads news column for The Clifton Record. In 1990, the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. She is survived by her husband of 65 years; children Mary Lynda Burke and husband John of Houston; Karel Bernadette Moseley of Aurora, Colo.; Thomas B. Moseley III and wife Christi of San Antonio; Justin Moseley of Lovelock, Nev.; Laura Moseley CTM, stationed in the Dominican Republic; Eric Moseley of Austin; Jerome Moseley of Austin; and Mason Moseley at the ranch. She is also survived by her brother Isaac Jerome Moseley and wife Rosemary of Dallas, and 15 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Josh Robinson
Josh Robinson, age 19, passed away on Feb. 16, Funeral service were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, at the First United Methodist Church in McGregor. Interment icon was in the McGregor cemetery. A candle light vigil was held at 8 p.m. Sunday, at Amsler’s Park in McGregor. On March 4, 1986, in Temple, Cynthia (Goodrow) Robinson was blessed with the birth of her son, Joshua David Robinson. They lived in the McGregor/Waco area most of his life. He had gone to schools in both China Spring and McGregor. He loved music, Cadillac’s, animals and being with his friends. He was a joy to his mother’s heart. He is survived by his mother, Cynthia Robinson of McGregor; brother, Michael Richard of McGregor; father, Jim Robinson of South Carolina, grandmother, Bonnie Beckett of McGregor; Aunts, Beverly Goodrow, Deborah Smith, and Cheryl Drinovsky, and his girl, Kayla Medina of McGregor. Memorials may be made to the Josh Robinson Benefit Fund, c/o First National Bank, McGregor, Texas.

Edward Henry Moorman
Edward Henry Moorman, 79, passed away at Goodall-Witcher in Clifton on Wednesday, Feb. 8. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., on Saturday, Feb. 11, at Meridian First Methodist Church, with Rev. William Sterling presiding. Moorman was born May 10, 1926, in Cayote, to Arch and Avis Richards Moorman. He was a retired salesman for a hardware company and a veteran of World War II. He is survived by sons, Bob and David Moorman, both of Wylie; daughter, Dianne Smith of Commerce; sister, Melva Hamilton and husband James of Ardmore, Okla.; four grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Dorothy Stuard
Dorothy Stuard, 76, a retired bookkeeper, passed away peacefully Thursday, Feb. 16. Funeral services were held Tuesday, at Shannon Rose Hill Funeral Chapel. Burial was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Norse cemetery in the community of Norse, with visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Stuard was born Aug. 12, 1929, in Clifton. She was a loving mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed. She enjoyed gardening and spoiling her cats. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Stuard; three brothers; and two sisters. Survivors include her sons, Brad Stuard and Brett Stuard and his wife, Tammy; grandchildren, Jonathan, Aaron and Stephen; numerous nieces and nephews; four spoiled cats. Memorials may be made to James L. West Care Center; or Trinity Lutheran Church Lifeline Fund, 3621 Tulsa Way, Fort Worth 76107.

Helen Ruth Mattiza
Helen Ruth Mattiza, 74, passed away Sunday, Feb. 5, after a long battle with diabetes and related ailments. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, at Arborlawn United Methodist Church, in Fort Worth. Her body was donated to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas. Mattiza was born Jan. 22, 1932, in Artesia, N.M., to Col. Wilbur Rester and Helen Rester Bronstad. She graduated with highest honors from Clifton High School and Texas Wesleyan College. She retired from Fort Worth Country Day School, where she taught middle school English, history, and Technical Theatre for more than 25 years. She had leadership roles in Westcliff United Methodist Church, the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, the Fort Worth Sail and Power Squadron, and the Fort Worth Boat Club, where she and her husband were avid sailors and the Skiperettes established the Helen Mattiza Woman of the Year trophy. Mattiza was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Dick, Bob, and Steve Rester. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Billy “Gus” Mattiza; sons, Mike and Wyatt Mattiza; daughter, Heather Mattiza; grandchildren, Matthew, Katie, Luke, and Krissy Mattiza; brother, Coleman “Coke” Rester and wife, Ginny; and sister-in-law, Betty “Toots” Eubanks and husband Sonny.

Gerald Northup
Gerald Northup passed away Monday, Feb. 6, at the age of 88. Funeral service were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at the First Baptist Church in Valley Mills, with interment following at the Valley Mills cemetery. Northup was born near Myrtle Point, Ore., the oldest son of Walter W. and Ollie (Chesley) Northup. He attended school in the Catching Creek area and was Dairy Manager for Shorty Schull of Myrtle Point, Ore. for 20 years. In 1957 he joined the Broadbent Community Church and was baptized in the Coquille River. In November of 1957 he married Izora (Zoe) Ficklin Northup, the widow of his younger brother, Ansel. They made their home in Valley Mills, for their married life of 48 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Valley Mills. Northup worked in construction and for the Bosque County Road Department until his retirement, at which time he went to work for Gloff Motors doing farm and ranch work in Clifton. He remained with Gloff until he was 88 years of age. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, three brothers, and one granddaughter. He is survived by his brothers Keith Northup of Broadbent, Ore., Philo Northup of Ft. Bragg, Calif.; his sisters Eva Grace Northup of Burns, Ore., May Kenyon of Powers, Ore., and Joyce Mendez of Portland, Ore. He He is also survived by his wife Zoe Northup; and daughters Mary Ann Soukup and husband, Frank of West; and Linda Johnasen and husband, Ronnie, of Valley Mills; two granddaughters, and five great grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Valley Mills Children’s Department, the Valley Mills Volunteer Fire Department, or to the Valley Mills cemetery Association. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Foss Funeral Home.

Wilma Delores McDowell
Tuesday, Jan. 31, Wilma Delores McDowell, 97, passed away in her home in Clifton. Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 4, in Salado, under the direction of Pastor Arthur Washburn. Graveside services were held at Salado cemetery. McDowell was born Nov. 25, 1908, in Kelleen, to William Isacc and Celeste Dolores Hedrick McDowell. She later married in Belton, and she and her husband had four children. Living in Salado, Belton, and Clifton, McDowell was involved in the restaurant business and taking care of her mother. She was affiliated with the Methodist Church. McDowell enjoyed collecting, fishing, cooking, and caring for children. Every child she cared for like they were her own. No one passed her home being hungry. She took in the homeless. She was preceded in death by her husband and her son, Cliffort B. McDowell Jr. McDowell is survived her son, William McDowell of Clifton; daughter, Celeste Grubbs and husband Troy of Clifton; son, Joe Weir of Belton; grandchildren Brenda and James Fritz of Belton; Wilma D. Alexander and husband Melvin of Clifton; Susan Ervin and husband Willie C. of Cleburne; Betty McEntire and husband Shane of Whitney; Carol Weir of Belton; Billy Plunkett of Whitney; Marvin Weir of Belton; Joey Adams of Whitney; Diane Weir of Waco; Patricia Adams of Whitney; 13 great-grandchildren; and 26 great great-grandchildren. Pallbearers included Troy Grubbs, James Fritz, Derrian Kennerson, Casey Adams, Willie C. Ervin, and Oral Hutson. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.

Amy Nell May Guthrie Smith
Amy Nell May Guthrie Smith passed away on Thursday, Jan. 26, at her home. Smith was born May 1, 1921, to Roy and Mary Otterson-May, in Bosque County, on the farm in the Bee Creek area. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, G.W. Guthrie, and her second husband, Leslie Smith; her sister Ida May Cranfill Cumins; Annie Marie May; and her brother, Walter May; and Dorthy Nell Cranfill Booth. Smith is survived by one sister, Lida May New of Fort Worth; a step daughter, Becky Jones and husband, Ted of Clifton; and stepson Virgil Smith of Temple; eight grandchildren, Jason, Josh, Lance, Chris, David, Daryll, Kim, and Debbie; niece’s and nephews, Raymond New, Ladena New McDonald, Mary New Ward, Al New, Rita May Naumann, Earl May, Carol May, Helen Cranfil Stone, and Milton Cranfil. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and will be greatly missed by her friends, family, and the church family she held so dearly. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.
