TRAVIS P. GORDON, age 69, of Midland, died Saturday, April 26, 2003 at Midland Memorial Hospital. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2003 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, 400 West Pecan Street, Coleman, Texas. Burial will follow in the Coleman City cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Travis was born March 4, 1934 in Fisher County, Texas and was a son of the late Condy and Ollie Swanner Gordon. He grew up in the Stephenville area and attended school at Sylvester. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War and was a Master Sergeant. On August 12, 1955 he married
Gloria June Pope in Coleman and she preceded him in death on November 20, 1991. Travis lived in Odessa from 1955-1970, Sonora from 1970-1984 and moved to Midland in 1984 where he lived at the time of his death. He had worked in the oil field since 1952 and been a tool pusher for many years for TMBR/Sharp Drilling Inc. and was working for them at the time of his death. He was Baptist.
Survivors include two sons, David and wife Jacque Gordon and John Dale Gordon all of Midland; six grandchildren, Andrea Sanders of Midland, Kendra Gordon of San Angelo, Matthew Gordon of Midland, Kirsten Gordon and Austin Clayton both of Bronte, and Owen Tyler Gordon of Midland; one great-grandson, Tyler Mays of Midland; two sisters, Adela Bigham of Roby and Gwen Bray of Stephenville; one brother, Leon Gordon of Stephenville; numerous nieces and nephews and many close friends including his best friend, Bill Childress of Midland.
Family visitation will be held on Monday from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman, Texas.
Memorials may be made to March of Dimes Permian Basin Division.
SIDNEY ANDERSON WHEAT, age 85, of Coleman, passed away Saturday, April 26, 2003 at Holiday Hill Nursing Home. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 28, 2003 in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bill Merritt officiating and assisted by Rev. Gary Boyd and Rev. John Stanislaw. Burial will follow at the Coleman cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Sidney was born June 20, 1917 in Coleman, Texas and was a son of William Martin Wheat and Baird D. Jackson Wheat. He grew up in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School in 1936. He also attended John Tarleton College. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II. On November 11, 1945 he married
Loyce Parker in Coleman and she preceded him in death on August 21, 1989. He married
Billie Prater on June 6, 1992 in Coleman. He was a self-employed oil marketer for Exxon USA and a former member of the Exchange Club and Triple L Club. He also assisted the Loaves and Fishes ministry and was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Billie Wheat of Coleman; two sons, Gary Don and wife Phyllis Wheat of Plano and Paul Wheat of Coleman; one daughter, Jean Ellen and husband Rickey Keas of Coleman; step-son, Carl and wife Sandra Prater of Pampa, Texas; two grandchildren, Pete Herring of Brownwood and Jeffrey and wife Charlotte Herring of Slayton; three great-grandchildren, Summer Herring, Jade Herring both of Slayton and Bailey Herring of Brownwood; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

DR. J. P. JONES, age 79, of Coleman, passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2003 at Abilene Regional Medical Center. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 24, 2003 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Joe Hailey officiating. Burial will follow in the Gouldbusk cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Dr. Jones was born October 24, 1923 in Louisiana where he grew up and graduated from high school. He attended medical school at the University of Mississippi and Louisiana State University. He also attended college in Chicago, Illinois and Scott and White in Temple, where he also taught. He had a practice in Temple and moved to Coleman, Texas in the 1960’s and opened a medical clinic. He retired in 1991. In July 1991 he married
Fern Baker in Mineola, Texas. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Fern Jones of Coleman; three children, Carolyn McDonald, Richard Paul Jones and Cathy Jones; two step-sons, Mike and wife Carolyn Baker of Abilene, Texas and Max and wife Tonya Baker of Tyler, Texas; one brother and sister-in-law, Roland and Verna Jones of Leesville, Louisiana; one sister, Gloria Richardson of Louisiana; four grandchildren, Lana and Wade Baker of Abilene, Texas, Jason and wife Kaylyn Baker of Arlington and Greg and wife Tiffany Bowersock of Nashville, Tennessee.
Family visitation will be held Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
BEVERLY JOYCE STROTHER, age 67 of Coleman, died Sunday, April 20, 2003 at Coleman County Medical Center. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. The body was cremated. Stevens Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Strother was born October 12, 1935 in Rio Grande City, Texas, a daughter of Alton Juneau and Leoma Jane Johnson Juneau. She had lived in Louisiana and Robinsville, North Carolina before moving to Coleman in 1999. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Anthony and Rosemarie Strother of Durham, North Carolina, Dennis and Marlene Strother of Alexandria, Louisiana; two sisters, Betty Jean Johnson of Coleman, Bobbie Jo Campbell of Oregon; one brother, Alton Juneau of Coleman; four grandchildren, Charlene Vance, Mandy Rae Quevedo; Anthony "T.J." Strother, Christopher Strother; four great-grandchildren, Addison True Vance, Hailey Nicole Vance, Victoria Rose Strother, Bailey Alexis Quevedo and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Kevin Strother.
FLORENCE JACKSON, age 87 of Midland and formerly of Coleman died Sunday, April 20, 2003 at Midland Memorial Hospital. Graveside service will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Coleman City cemetery Pavilion with Dr. G. Dean Coultas officiating. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Mrs. Jackson was born February 16, 1916 in LaVerne, Oklahoma, a daughter of Warren L. Theyer and Sallie Smith Theyer. She was raised in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School in 1932 and later from Draughan’s Business College in Fort Worth. She married
George Wilson and he preceded her in death in 1978. She later married
Fred Jackson and he preceded her in death in 1984. She was a cashier in Colorado for 17 years, before returning to Coleman in 1972. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Coleman.
Survivors include nieces and nephews Darrell Van Ness, Robert Coleman Van Ness, Shirley Dela Horne and John Hall and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by four sisters, Helen Adeline Van Ness, Dorothy Taylor, Elsie Tate and Margaret Theyer.
JOE BURROUGHS, age 91, of Novice, died Monday, April 14, 2003 at an Abilene hospital. Graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2003 at Silver Valley cemetery with his nephew, Glen Burroughs officiating. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Joe was born March 28, 1912 in Silver Valley, Texas and was a son of Walter and Mary Anderson Burroughs. He grew up in Coleman County and graduated from Silver Valley High School. Joe married
Maurine Jameson on March 17, 1933 in Coleman and she preceded him in death on November 9, 1993. He was an oil field superintendent and pumper.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
Family visitation will be held this evening (Tuesday) from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home.
ROWDY NICOLE FIKES, age 4, of Coleman, passed away Sunday, April 13, 2003 at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth. Funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2003, at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Coleman City cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Rowdy was born February 1, 1999 in Coleman, Texas and was the daughter of Darrell Fikes and Maecy Watson. She had lived in Coleman all of her life and attended Grandma’s House Day Care. She was a prepatory member of the First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her father and step-mother, Darrell and Mary Fikes of Coleman; her mother, Maecy Watson of Coleman; one brother, Ben Watson of Coleman; three sisters, Tara Watson, Chelsea Guerrero and Paige Guerrero all of Coleman; two step-brothers, Bradley Jenkins and Shane Hamill both of Coleman; maternal grandparents, Larry and Brenda Nations of Oklahoma; paternal grandfather Ronnie Donica, Sr. of Coleman; paternal great-grandmother, Velma Gilder of Coleman; step-grandparents, Teresa and George Horton of Coleman; seven uncles, six aunts; one great-aunt, one great-uncle.
She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Coleen Donica, on November 19, 2002 and by her great-grandfather, Gene Gilder on February 25, 1997.

MORZIE GILE, age 87, of Coleman, passed away Saturday, April 12, 2003 at Abilene Regional Medical Center. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel in Coleman, Texas with The Reverend Joan Rudolph officiating. Private interment will be held in Kirkland City cemetery in Kirkland, Washington.
Morzie was born December 22, 1915 in Grand Saline, Texas and was the daughter of Martin Abram Bradburn and Margaret Greene Bradburn. She grew up in Wichita Falls and graduated from Baylor University. She taught school in Coleman from 1940-1944. She also taught in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and Bellevue, Washington. In 1945 she married
Richard Elmer Gile, Sr. and he preceded her in death in 1975. She lived in Seattle, Washington until returning to Coleman in 1978 where she taught school until 1982. She returned to Washington for several years and moved back to Coleman in 1993. She was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Coleman and a member of Retired Teachers.
Survivors include two sons, Richard Elmer Gile, Jr. and wife Annette Klapstein of Bainbridge Island, WA and Stanley A. Gile and wife Carol Gile of Sammamish, WA; one step-son, Richard Austin Gile and wife Myrna Gile of Seattle, WA; six grandchildren, Jason Gile and Ryan Gile both of Sammamish, WA, Michael Gile of Mercer Island, WA, Bryan Gile of Phoenix, Arizona, Alec C. Stephens III and Michael W. K. Stephens both of Seattle, WA; two great-grandchildren, Madeline and Lillian Gile both of Mercer Island, WA.

A.N. "NOBLE" LOBSTEIN, age 92 of Coleman, died Thursday, April 3, 2003 at Oak Ridge Manor Nursing Home in Brownwood. Graveside services with Military Honors will be held 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 6, 2003 at Silver Valley cemetery with Brad Schafer officiating. Stevens Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Lobstein was born May 31, 1910 in Coleman County, a son of Charlie O. Lobstein and Emma Mauphin Lobstein. He was raised and attended school in Coleman County. He married
Ruth Graves on December 8, 1947 in Brown County. She preceded him in death on September 11, 1995. He served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1945. He was a custom grain harvester and a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
He is survived by two sons, Roy Lobstein of Fort Stockton, Texas, Jake Lobstein of Brownwood; one daughter Patsy Lobstein of Coleman; one sister-in-law, Alma Lobstein of Brawley, California; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, Jerry Lobstein, five brothers and two sisters.
Family visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
SAMUEL DAVID KILLIAN, JR., age 82 of Fort Worth, died Friday, May 2, 2003 at James L. West Hospice Center in Fort Worth. Graveside service will be held 1:00 p.m. Sunday at Rough Creek cemetery in Novice with Dr. G. Dean Coultas officiating. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Mr. Killian was born November 30, 1920 in Marlow, Oklahoma, a son of Samuel David Killian, Sr. and Willette Love Galyean. He was raised in Marlow and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Master Degree. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and married
Louise Williams on June 12, 1943 in Abilene. He pioneered recreational therapy for mentally ill patients and was the Recreation Director of the Air Force at Carswell A.F.B. in Fort Worth, receiving the Meritorious Service Award for 27 years with the Civil Service. He had lived in Fort Worth for the last 42 years and was a Methodist.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Killian of Fort Worth; one nephew, Roy Cooper, Jr. of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one niece, Margery Puzin of Estes Park, Colorado; one brother, Sherman R. Killian of Mililani Town, Hawaii; one sister-in-law, Betty Strickland of Lubbock and numerous great nieces and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Ruth A. Cooper.
