MANUELA DIAZ ROSALES, age 88, of Coleman, died Thursday, July 3, 2003, at Coleman County Medical Center. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 5, 2003 in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Joe Frausto, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at the Coleman City cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Manuela was born August 22, 1914 in Whon, Coleman County, Texas and was a daughter of Pete and Francisca Figueroa Diaz. She grew up in Whon and married
Felipe U. Rosales on December 12, 1931 in Brownwood. He preceded her in death on January 15, 1989. She was a life-long resident of Coleman County and moved into the city of Coleman following her marriage. She was a housewife and a member of Cordero Baptist Church.
Survivors include five daughters, Amelia Aguirre of Abilene, Lydia Sanchez of Coleman, Anita Escobar of San Antonio, Jeannie Castanon of Abilene and Nena Rosales of Brownwood; seven sons, Octaviano (Otto) Rosales, Gabriel Rosales, Phillip Rosales, Robert Rosales all of Coleman, Eduardo Rosales of Abilene, Salatiel Rosales of Coleman and Ezekiel Rosales of Abilene; 35 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren, 16 great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four sons, Hiram, Raul, Erasmo and Juan Rosales and one daughter, Sarita Rosales; three grandchildren also preceded her in death.
Prayer services will be held on Thursday and Friday at 7:00 p.m. in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel.
LEONA MAE HOPKINS, age 75, of Brownwood, died Thursday, July 3, 2003 at her residence in Brownwood. Her body was donated to Texas Tech for medical research and a memorial service is pending at a later date. Arrangements were made by Stevens Funeral Home.
Leona Mae Hopkins was born May 28, 1928 in Rogers County, Oklahoma and was a daughter of Lee W. and Leona Johns Abel. She was married
to Orvil Lee Hopkins on May 9, 1980 in Nowata, Oklahoma and he preceded her in death on July 25, 1998. She moved to Cross Plains in 1994 and lived in Coleman for a short time while her husband was a resident at Holiday Hill. She moved to Brownwood about a year ago. While living in Coleman she attended Jesus Saves Ministries and at the time of her death was a member of Living Waters in Cross Plains. She had worked for many years as a waitress.
Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, May and Dean Brannan of Pioneer, Texas; one brother, Kenneth Abel of Bransdoll, Oklahoma; numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Lung Association.
ROSA LEE SEALS, age 95 of Coleman died Monday, July 7, 2003 at Coleman County Medical Center. Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 10, 2003 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kermit Sorrells officiating and Rev. John Stanislaw assisting. Burial will follow in the Coleman City cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Rosa Lee was born April 16, 1908 in Kaufman County, Texas, a daughter of Tom Kelley and Emma Bell Adams Kelley. She moved to Coleman County as a young child and attended schools in the Buffalo Community. She married
Clifford L. Seals in 1924 in Coleman. He preceded her in death in 1967. She worked on the family farm and later worked for Grammer’s Department Store in Coleman and worked as a Dental Assistant for Dr. J. F. Gaines. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Coleman.
Survivors include two daughters, Geraldine Wilder of Coleman, Dorothy Mitchell and husband Robert, of Abilene; one brother and sister-in-law, Gordon and Hester Kelley of Abilene; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Sybil and Jay Nichols of Hondo, Lena B. and Travis Smith of San Angelo; one granddaughter, Rosemary Mitchell Henderson and husband, James of Keller and many loving nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Adolph Kelley and son-in-law, Roy Wilder.

ESTHER CAMPBELL, age 95 of Georgetown and formerly of Coleman County, died Wednesday, July 9, 2003 at Wesleyan Nursing Home in Georgetown. Graveside service will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, July 14, 2003 at Voss cemetery with Louise Strength officiating. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Mrs. Campbell was born June 23, 1908 in Millersview, Concho County, Texas, a daughter of Joel Thomas Cohea and Eliza Jeanette Gates Cohea. She attended school at Leaday. She married
Ira Pinkney Campbell. He died in 1945. She was a restaurant cook and a Baptist.
Survivors include one son, Kenneth Ray Campbell of Odessa; one daughter, Zepha Kugle of Georgetown; three nephews, Willie Matthews, Lester Matthews, Carl Matthews all of Coleman and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Lowell Campbell and Fred Campbell and one daughter, Peggy Jo Blevins.
ANTHONY GUEL, age 17 of Coleman died Monday, July 28, 2003 at Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo. Funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 31, 2003 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Coleman City cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Anthony was born November 16, 1985 in McAllen, Texas, a son of Mario Guel and Sylvia Diaz Nowlin. He moved to Coleman in 1997 and attended school at Coleman High School. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.
Survivors include is mother and step-father, Sylvia and Danny Nowlin; father, Mario Guel; two brothers, Mario Net Guel, Louis Gerardo Alvarado; one sister-in-law, Marcia Mares; grandparents, Buster Diaz, Aurora Diaz, Antonia Sanchez; nine aunts, Diana Umana, Elizabeth Vences, Darsey Bustamante, Dora Diaz, Marylou Diaz, Judy Espitia, Sonia Chavez, Irma Contreras, Martha Sanchez; seven uncles, Richard Diaz, Felis Diaz, Emilio Diaz, Jimmy Diaz, Joey Diaz, Fernando Guel, Paulo Sanchez and numerous cousins also survive.
Pallbearers will be Danny Nowlin, Richard Diaz, Felis Diaz, Emilio Diaz, Joey Diaz and Boyd Lee Diaz.
A prayer service will be held 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, with visitation following till 9:00 p.m.
TOMMY RUSH, of Talpa, Texas, noted horse breeder and trader, passed away August 4, 2003 following surgery in a San Angelo Medical Center. Tommy was born December 9, 1939 in Coleman to Raymond and Frances Rush of Talpa, Texas who preceded him in death in 1997.
He is survived by two sisters, Peggy Martin and husband Francis of Midland, Texas and Ginger Sneed and husband Bill of Talpa, Texas and a brother, Mike Rush and wife Terry Allbright of Odessa, Texas. He has three nieces and four nephews and several great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Stevens Funeral Home, Coleman, Texas on Tuesday, August 5, 6-8 p.m. A service of remembrance in the cowboy style will be held on Saturday, August 9, at 2:00 p.m. at Lost Track Livestock Center, Talpa, Texas.
Tommy had a lifelong love of horses which he expressed in many ways. He bred and purchased horses for show, pleasure, work, rodeo and racing. He was known to many as an authority on the Foundation Quarter Horse movement and published a newsmagazine on the subject for several years called The Remuda. He established a successful regional horse auction in Talpa called Lost Track Livestock Center and West Texas Horse sales. Auctions of all types, steer roping and other activities were held there regularly. He was a member of the National Foundation Quarter Horse Association (NFQHA) and American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA).
A victim of polio since the age of two, Tommy overcame many obstacles in his life and left a mark of determination and perseverance we will never forget. He did not let his challenges keep him from having a great sense of humor and being a great storyteller. He wrote excellent cowboy poetry and was the historian for the Talpa area and the ranching history there. His grandfather Albert V. Livingston was a pioneer rancher in the area and supplied Tommy with inspiration.
Tommy was loved and supported by many people in his life and his family wishes to express their profound appreciation.
Memorial gifts in memory of Tommy may be sent to the West Texas Rehabilitation Center, Abilene, Texas or to your local Rotary Club in support of their efforts to rid polio from the world forever.
DOROTHY WEBB, age 88, of Burkett, died Friday, August 8, 2003 at a Bangs nursing home. Graveside funeral service will be held at 9:00 a.m. Sunday, August 10, 2003 at the Burkett cemetery Pavilion with Baker Rudolph officiating. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Dorothy was born October 30, 1914 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to John Stone and Mae Henthorne Stone. She grew up in Oklahoma and graduated from high school in Oklahoma City. She was married
to O. W. (Bevo) Webb. The Webb brothers bought a ranch in South Dakota on Orton Flat on the Cheyenne River and she and her husband lived there from the spring of 1949 to the fall of 1969 and they considered that the best time of their life. They moved back to the Webb home place on the Pecan Bayou where she resided until her death. Dorothy was a long-time member of the garden club in Cross Plains and was a Master Judge. She also received an award for beautification from the State of Texas for planting wildflowers along FM 2806. She was a charter member of the Cowbelles and a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include her husband, O. W. (Bevo) Webb of Bangs, Texas; nephews, Wayne and wife Darlene Webb of Burkett, Tommy Ray and wife Polly Webb of Schertz, Texas and Robby Glen Webb; niece, Jacqueline and husband Ray Mackey of Abilene; sister-in-law, Zora Mae Bryant of Cross Plains, Texas; Niece, Darla Stubblefield of Bethany, Oklahoma: Nephew, Bob Gallamore of Oklahoma: several great-nephews and great-nieces.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
TOMMIE J. CONNELLY, age 75, of Burkett, died Monday, August 11, 2003 at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 14, 2003, at First Baptist Church in Coleman with Rev. John Stanislaw officiating and Rick Marshall officiating. Burial will follow at the Burkett cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Tommie was born January 6, 1928 in Burkett, Texas and was the son of Winn and Ocie Edington Connelly. He grew up in Burkett and attended school at Comal and graduated from Burkett High School. On June 21, 1971 he married
Charlyne Sovey in Waco, Texas. Tommie was a life-long resident of the Burkett area and was a stock farmer. He served on the board of the Farm Service Agency (formerly ASCS) for nine years, was currently serving as a director for Farm Bureau and the Coleman County Telephone Cooperative. He was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church in Coleman.
Survivors include his wife, Charlyne Connelly of Burkett; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy Mac and Paulette Connelly of Coleman and Chris and Cynthia Connelly of Burkett; five grandsons, Shea and wife Kari Connelly of Fort Worth, Casey Connelly of Coleman, Clint Connelly of Austin, Tommy Lance and wife Christine Connelly of Troy, Texas and Johnny Chance Connelly of Troy, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Taylor, Cameron, Trista and Gage Connelly; sister-in-law, Edna Burkett of Andrews, Texas; three step-sisters, Dollie Sparkman and Theda Rhea Hazlewood both of Coleman and Donna Bucy of Phoenix, Arizona; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, J. C. Burkett.
Family visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Stevens Funeral Home.

ANNIE WILL FARRIS, age 91, of Coleman, died Thursday, August 14, 2003 at Abilene Regional Medical Center. Funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, August 17, 2003 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Charles Sheffield officiating. Burial will follow at the Coleman City cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Annie Will was born April 24, 1912 in Tom Green County, Texas and was the daughter of W. S. and Roxie Aner Barefoot Smith. She grew up in Coleman County and graduated from Loss Creek High School. On July 31, 1932 she married
Bert G. Farris in Coleman and they celebrated 65 years of marriage. She was a member of Central Baptist Church.
Survivors are one daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and James Burns of Abilene; one son, Bert Wayne Farris of Burkett; one sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Duane Smith of El Cajon, CA; four granddaughters, Pamela Curoe of Abilene, Anita Monroe of Burkett, Vickie Owens of Coleman and Amy Griggs and husband Mitch of Sulphur Springs; one foster grandson; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; four sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; one aunt, Delinda Smith of Santa Anna; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, five brothers and three sisters.
Family visitation will be held on Saturday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Dr. Don L. Smith entered the Church Triumphant on August 16, 2003 after a courageous year-long battle with cancer. Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Coleman under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home with interment at Silver Valley cemetery.
Dr. Smith was born on February 6, 1937, in Chaves County, New Mexico to Tom and Adelia Smith. He is survived by his wife Mary Emma of Brownwood, his daughter Adelia of Dallas, and his son Kent of Brownwood.
He is also survived by a brother James D. Smith and wife Linda of Waco, his cousin Carlie Justice and husband Pat, as well as four nieces, two nephews, and numerous cousins, friends and former students. He was proceeded in death by his parents, a sister Margaret, and a son Beau.
Dr. Smith attended grade school at Echo and Coleman, graduated high school in Albuquerque, New Mexico and then went on to serve in the U. S. Navy. He holds a B. A. degree from Hardin Simmons University (1962), an M. A. degree from Mississippi State University (1964), and a Ph.D from Texas Tech University (1971). As a state certified general appraiser, he did much of the land appraisal for O. H. Ivie Reservoir. As a Christian, Dr. Smith was a dedicated member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Coleman and served in numerous church leadership positions.
Dr. Smith devoted his life to teaching and challenging his students to reach their full potential. His students and colleagues attest to the positive influence and difference that he made in their lives during his twenty-five year tenure as a Professor of Political Science at Howard Payne University. In addition to teaching his classes, Dr. Smith served as the coach of HPU's award-winning Moot Court team. In 2000 he was chosen as the Outstanding Faculty Member at Howard Payne and in 2003 was appointed the J. D. Sanderfer Chair of Political Science. To honor his service and dedication, the Douglas MacArthur Academy Board of Directors and the Howard Payne University Board of Trustees established the Dr. Don L. Smith Academy Scholarship earlier this year.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Coleman and the Douglas MacArthur Academy of Freedom at Howard Payne University.
Family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6-8:00 p.m. at their home, 3031 Shady Oaks Lane, Brownwood, TX, 76801 and at Stevens Funeral Home from 1:00 to 2:30 on Monday.
