OPAL COUCH, age 93, of Coleman, died Friday (August 3, 2001) at a local nursing home. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Gouldbusk cemetery with Joe Hailey officiating. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Mrs. Couch was born September 6, 1907 and was the daughter of Frank and Ella Copeland. She grew up in Gouldbusk and attended school there and Mozelle. She graduated from Abilene Christian College (now University) and was a first and second grade teacher at Gouldbusk and Mozelle for many years. On October 17, 1944 she married McMordie Couch in Gouldbusk and he preceded her in death on September 12, 1967. She had lived in the city of Coleman since 1965 and was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include one sister, Vera West of Coleman; four nieces, including Glenda Benton of Fort Worth and Gwen Neves of Graham; several great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Jewell Copeland and one brother, Carl Copeland.

MABEL (MRS. LEON) GOSS, age 97 of Coleman, died Friday evening (August 10, 2001) at Holiday Hill Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday (August 12, 2001) at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gary Boyd officiating, assisted by Rev. John Stanislaw. Burial will follow in the Coleman City cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Mrs. Goss was born March 23, 1904 in Sanger, Texas, a daughter of James Anderson Pridemore and Laura Lenora Trent Pridemore. She married Leon Goss on December 15, 1922 in Brownwood, Texas. He preceded her in death on February 23, 1988. Mrs. Goss was Homemaker, Farmer, Sunday School Teacher and a member of the First Baptist Church in Coleman.

Mrs. Goss is survived by one son-in-law, Bert Humble (and wife Georgann) of Winters; one brother, Robert Pridemore of Walnut Creek, California; six grandchildren, Bethany Everett of Big Spring, Jackie Witt (and wife Linda) of Cisco, Elaine Robinson (and husband Larry) of Coleman, Joey Witt (and wife Sharon) of Odessa, Jamie Witt (and wife Kathy) of Sweetwater, Sissy Ziehr (and husband Jeff) of Clyde; sixteen great-grandchildren; twelve great-great grandchildren; four great-great-great grandchildren and numerous neices and nephews.

Mrs. Goss was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three children, Billy Jack Goss, Barbara Witt, Janie Humble; three brothers, John Pridemore, Guy Henry Pridemore, Woody Clayton Pridemore and three sisters, Birda May Ary, Alta Rosie Thompson and Mary Ella Baumann.

Family visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday (August 11, 2001) at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Wade Turner, Thelbert Elkins, Marty Baker, Butch Anders, Phillip Hinds, and Jeff Moore.

INEZ DAVIS, age 77 of Coleman, died Sunday morning (August 12, 2001) at her residence. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday (August 14, 2001) at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Billy Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in the Burkett cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Mrs. Davis was born May 10, 1924 in Coleman County, a daughter of John E. Moore and Dollie S. Selph Moore. She was raised and attended schools in Burkett. She married Charles Thomas (Herman) Davis on July 1, 1939 in Coleman. He preceded her in death on October 18, 1988. Mrs. Davis work for 14 years with Coleman Independent School District as a cook, was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary and a member of North Side Baptist Church.

Mrs. Davis is survived by one daughter, Charlie Mae Boatright of Coleman; two sons, Terry Davis (and wife Susie) and Perry Davis (and wife Sheila) both of Coleman; one sister, Dalvia Havner of Santa Anna; one brother, Earl Moore (and wife Jean) of Fort Worth; five sisters-in-law, Pat Moore of Colorado, Mae Seeton, Ruby Buford, Ruth Sullins (and husband Willard), and Jan Davis all of Coleman; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren and numerous neices and nephews.

Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter,

Rosa Lee Payne on March 7, 2001, two brothers, John Thomas "Tommy" Moore and Leo Moore, and one sister Cleo Moore.

BETTY CARNES, age 63, life-long Coleman resident, died Monday (August 13, 2001) at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday (August 16, 2001) in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Coleman cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Mrs. Carnes was born February 20, 1938 in Coleman, Texas and was the daughter of Ila Kirby and the late Zack Kirby, Jr. She grew up in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School in 1956. On December 21, 1956, she married Donald Ray Carnes in Coleman and he preceded her in death on March 6, 1990. At the time of her death, she was an Admissions Clerk at Brownwood Regional Medical Center. She was a member of Bible Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Duane Carnes of Coleman and Mark (and wife Deborah) Carnes of Overton, Texas; her mother, Ila Kirby of Coleman; two sisters, Margaret Haffley of Coleman and Loretta Epperson of Glen Cove; one brother, Ted Kirby of Early; four grandchildren, Brandon, Brittani, Tanner and Alex Carnes; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Arlen and Andrea Carnes and by a brother, Johnny Kirby.

Family visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home

Mr. Calvin England, age 77 of Rockwood, Tennessee died Sunday (August 12, 2001) at Farragut Health Center. Graveside services with military honors will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday (August 18, 2001) at the Coleman cemetery Pavilion with Dr. G. Dean Coultas officiating. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Mr. England was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, a member of the California National Guard, and electrician and self-employed T.V. repairman.

Mr. England is survived by one daughter, Judy Lee Coopman of Buffalo, New York; one step-daughter, Bridget Sue Blue of Fenton, Michigan; two sons, Robert D. England of Snyder, Malcolm England of Abilene; one step-son, Roscoe Freeman of Seneca, South Carolina; one brother, Alford England of Lawn; two sisters, Lucretia Lockett of Junction, Dorothy Johnson of Coleman; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Family visitation will be Friday evening (August 17, 2001) from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

MRS. R. C. (BEA) SPARKS, age 82, of Coleman, died Wednesday (August 15, 2001) at Abilene Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Eddie Jones officiating and assisted by Rev. Jeff Moore. Burial will follow in the Brown Ranch cemetery.

Mrs. Sparks was born June 8, 1919 in Donley County, Texas and was the daughter of Vel Ardell Hansard and Pearl Luther Hansard. She grew up in Headley, Texas and graduated from high school there. She graduated from beauty school and married R. C. "Reg" Sparks on September 23, 1944 in Fort Worth. She moved to Coleman in 1947 and had lived here since that time. She was a retired beautician and a housewife. She was a member of Harmony Baptist Church where she was a member of the WMU for many years. She was formerly a 4-H Leader and a member of the Brown Ranch Home Demonstration Club.

Survivors include her husband, R. C. "Reg" Sparks of Coleman; three daughters, Debra Blount of Coleman, Cindy (and husband Paul) Smith of Lubbock and Lindy Allcorn of Brady; three step-children, Pat Gable of Leander, Texas, Kent (and wife Judy) Sparks of Lake Brownwood and Linda (and husband Joe) Erwin of Odessa; one sister, Marguerite Beck of Wharton, Texas; 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Memorials may be made to the donor’s favorite charity.

Family visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

JIM GARDNER, age 95, of Coleman, died Saturday (August 18, 2001) at Coleman County Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church with Dr. G. Dean Coultas officiating and assisted by Dr. Tom McHorse. Burial will follow at Coleman cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Jim was born November 10, 1905 in Winters, Texas and was the son of Walter Jackson Gardner and Lillie Jane Brown Gardner. He grew up in Winters and graduated from Winters High School. He also graduated from John Tarleton College and was drafted into the U. S. Army in 1941, serving in the Army Corp of Engineers at the Army Engineer Depot near St. Louis, Missouri. On June 25, 1942 he married Sarah Lou Stevens in Coleman. He moved to Coleman in 1946 where he was the head of the Veterans Administration School for several years. He farmed for ten years and then worked at J. E. Stevens Hardware Store, retiring in 1978. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Friendly Fellows Sunday School Class and was a former teacher for the Men’s Downtown Sunday School Class. He was also a member of the Chancel Choir. Jim was a charter member of the Coleman Rotary Club and was a long-time member of the Coleman Rodeo Association. He served on the City Council and was formerly president of the Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Lou Gardner of Coleman; one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Susan Gardner of Longview; three grandchildren, Laura Kathryn Gardner of Austin, Emily Stevens Gardner of San Francisco and James Scott Gardner of Austin.

Family visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, P. O. 852, Coleman, Texas 76834.

GOLDIA EDINGTON, age 82, of Coleman, died Sunday (August 19, 2001) at Holiday Hill Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jeff Reid officiating. Burial will follow in the Coleman cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Mrs. Edington was born December 17, 1918 in Callahan County, Texas and was the daughter of Carl and Jessie Long Klutts. She grew up in the Cross Plains area and attended school at Dressy and Cross Plains. In 1936 she married Everett Edington in Cross Plains and he preceded her in death on May 5, 1971. Following her marriage, she lived in Callahan County and Coleman County in the Burkett area. She and her husband farmed and following his death, she became a realtor. She lived in Coleman and in Brownwood for about fifteen years. She was a Baptist.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Sammy and Becky Edington of Abilene; one daughter, Lana Rosenthal of Lubbock, Texas; two brothers, Barney Klutts of Lockhart, Texas and Fred Klutts of Granbury, Texas; one sister, Wilda Edington of Cross Plains; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation or the donor’s favorite charity.

Family visitation will be held Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers: Timothy McClellan, Matthew Rosenthal, Joshua Rosenthal, Mark Edington, Mike Edington, Derek Thomas.

BOBBIE (MRS. JOHN) WARREN, age 100, of Coleman, died Monday, August 27, 2001 at Holiday Hill Nursing Home. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday (August 29, 2001) at First United Methodist Church with Dr. G. Dean Coultas officiating. Burial will follow at Coleman cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Nita Bob White Warren was born August 31, 1900 in Glen Cove, Texas and was the daughter of H. White and Sarah Viola West White Golson. She was a life-long resident of Coleman and graduated from high school here. She attended TWC in Fort Worth and on November 20, 1921 she married John B. Warren, Jr. in Coleman. He preceded her in death on January 5, 1990. She and her husband were former co-owners of Bowen Drug Store where she worked for many years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was the organist for over 50 years.

Survivors include her sister, Nancy Golson McKinney of Coleman; numerous cousins, including local cousins: Addie Rose Gilliam, Mary Jane Giles, James West, Mark Griffis, J. T. Thompson, Beth Mercer and Mary Beth Hall.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 852, Coleman, Texas 76834 or the donor’s favorite charity.

Family visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Jim Stokes, James Hargett, Dick Powell, Mark Griffis, Bill Sneed, Lucien Love and Edward Gilliam.
