Dawn Blair Woodward, age 86, of Brownwood and former Coleman resident, died Tuesday, October 26, 2004 in Brownwood. Services are pending with Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman.

FRANCES WINNELL NEFF, age 84 of Coleman, died Sunday, October 17, 2004 at Holiday Hill Nursing Home. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 19, 2004 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. John Stanislaw officiating. Burial will be in the Richland Springs cemetery in San Saba County, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Mrs. Neff was born September 22, 1920 in San Saba County, the daughter of K.E. McKneely and Elva Cook McKneely. She grew up and attended school in Cherokee. She married Odus Allen in 1937 in San Saba County. He preceded her in death on August 22, 1966. She later married Raleigh E. Neff on February 7, 1969 in Coleman. He preceded her in death on May 26, 1997. For many years, she played at the piano at Burkett Baptist Church and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Coleman.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia and Bob Edington of Coleman; one son and daughter-in-law, Mason and Karen Allen of Coleman; one sister, Elizabeth Estep of Cherokee; six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, W.C. McKneely.

Family visitation will from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

The family requests memorials be made to the First Baptist Church or Hospice of the Big Country.

Pallbearers will be Mason Lynn Allen, Glen Edington, Bob Edington, Donny Murphy, Michael Murphy and Jake Knight.

MRS. S. E. REEVES POWELL, age 83, died Monday, October 11, 2004 at Coleman County Medical Center. A private family service will be held at Glen Cove cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

She was born S. E. Reeves on July 31, 1921 in Marysville, Cook County, Texas, a daughter of Arbin M. Reeves and Lillie Mae Wood Reeves. She grew up in South Texas and in the Courtney area near Stanton, Texas where she also attended school. On October 23, 1938 she married Willie D. Powell in Stanton, Texas. She lived in Japan, California, Washington D. C., Illinois and many other places where her husband was a Navy Chaplain. She moved to Glen Cove in the 1970’s, was a homemaker, and a member of Glen Cove Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Comdr. Willie D. Powell of Glen Cove, Texas; one daughter and son-in-law, Zona and Rick Marshall of Glen Cove, Texas; two grandchildren, Dr. Ronald Marshall of Navarre, Florida, Teri Fleming of San Angelo, Texas; three great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren; four sisters, Viola Pond, Sue Stewart both of San Angelo, Pearl Hardin, Jessie Cole of Dallas.

VIOLET RUTH FLIPPIN HEXT, age 86, of Coleman, died Friday, October 8, 2004 in Brownwood Regional Medical Center. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 12 at First Baptist Church in Coleman with Rev. Gary Boyd officiating and assisted by Rev. John Stanislaw. Burial will follow in the Coleman City cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

She was born Violet Ruth Flippin on December 3, 1917 on the Pitchfork Ranch at Dumont, King County, Texas, the ninth of 10 children of Asher Theodore and Lona Lee Ray Flippin. She attended school at Gardner Flatt Elementary on the Pitchfork Ranch, Dumont High School and graduated from Patton Springs High School in Afton, Texas. Ruth attended West Texas School of Nursing in Lubbock 1936-1937 and later graduated from Throckmorton Memorial Hospital School of Nursing as an L.V.N. She accepted the Lord in 1939 at the age of 21.

On December 24, 1937 she married Henry Newton Hext in her parent’s home in Afton, Texas. Henry and Ruth owned and operated a grocery store in Afton and moved to Throckmorton in 1945 where they owned and operated a grocery store for 25 years. Ruth also worked at Throckmorton Hospital for many years and later worked as a clinic nurse, in nursing homes and in private homes.

She and her husband moved to Coleman, Texas in 1979. Henry went to be with the Lord on August 28, 1989. Ruth was an active member of First Baptist Church and belonged to the Esther Sunday School Class, Letha Saunders WMU group and the WMU Round Table. She was a member of the choir for several years, worked in 4th and 5th grade Sunday School and played the piano in the Sunday School Department.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Lona Beth and Billy Bauer of Coleman;; three grandchildren, Julie and husband Joe Williford of Brownwood, Jana Bergen and Lacey Bauer both of Coleman; six great-grandchildren, Cole Terry, Andrew Putman, LeeAnn Thomas, Jordan Eager, Brandon Eager, Austin Sowell; one brother, T. O. and wife Polly Flippin of Las Vegas, NV; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, Roy, Carl, Earl, Claud and Troy Flippin; three sisters, Irene Hart, Vera Hollar, Anna Belle Smith.

Family visitation will be held on Monday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Gideons International.

J. D. HOPPER, age 85, of San Angelo and former Ballinger resident, died Sunday, September 26, 2004 at a San Angelo nursing home. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 30 at 2:00 p.m. in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel in Coleman, Texas, with Rev. Loyd Hopper, his brother, officiating and assisted by Carroll Hinds, his brother-in-law. Burial will follow in the Brown Ranch cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

J. D. was born on July 17, 1919 in Blooming Grove, Texas, a son of the late O. B. and Gladys Viola Cox Hopper. He grew up in Voss, attended school there and graduated from Mozelle High School in 1938. J. D. served in the Army Air Corp during World War II. In 1962 he married Faye Bilbrey and she preceded him in death in 1986. On March 23, 1991 he married Katherine Squyres Sparks. J. D. lived in Ballinger from 1949-1991 where he managed the Ballinger Salvage Company. He moved to San Angelo in 1991 and was a member of Edmund Blvd. Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Katherine Hopper of San Angelo, TX; one son, Jesse and wife Pat Hopper of Ballinger, TX; one daughter, Trudy and husband Dickie Redman of San Angelo, TX; five step-daughters, Brenda and husband Melvin Steadman of Miles,TX, Marilyn Bailey of Anchorage, AK, Carolyn Odor of San Angelo, TX, Elizabeth and husband Richard Jackson of San Antonio, TX, Debbie and husband Russell Bouseman of Kingwood, TX; one step-son, Rodney and wife Freda Sparks of Slidell, LA; 20 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; one brother, Loyd and wife Edwina Hopper of Valera, TX; three sisters, Lavada Evans of Buffalo, TX, Addie and husband Carroll Hinds of Glen Cove, TX, Grace Loyd of Mozelle, TX; numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the donor's favorite charity.

Family visitation will be held on Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home.

JESSIE LEE BREWER, age 101, of Coleman, died Thursday, September 23, 2004 at Coleman County Medical Center. Funeral service will be held Saturday, September 25 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Coleman with Rev. Gary Boyd officiating. Burial will follow at Coleman City cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

She was born Jessie Lee Johnson on September 14, 1903 in Anderson County, Texas, a daughter of Russell and Debbie Kelley Johnson. She grew up in Palestine and moved with her family to Coleman in 1916 where she has resided since that time. On January 15, 1921 she married Alvie Curtis Brewer in Coleman and he preceded her in death on December 1, 1981. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Sarah Louise McCleskey of Abilene and Billie Ruth and husband Max Horne of Coleman; two brothers, Hubert Johnson of San Angelo and Kelley Johnson of Albuquerque, NM; eight grandchildren, Bob and wife Joy Gillespie of Clyde, Gil and wife Betty Allison of Vernon, Joe and wife Cathy Gillespie of Stephenville, Debra and husband Rodney Apodaca of Weatherford, Mitzi and husband John Summers of Bastrop, Ben and wife Pam Brewer of Ft. Worth, Kit and wife Mindy Horne of Abilene and Scott Horne of S. Orange, NJ; 16 great-grandchildren; numerous great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Wanda Allison Ainsworth; a son, Aubrey Brewer; two grandsons, Chris Brewer and Tim Allison.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, P. O. Box 983, Coleman, Texas 76834 or Girling Health Care, 1423 Coggin Avenue, Brownwood, Texas 76801.

Family visitation will be held on Friday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home.

RUTH ELLEN DIAZ, age 41, of Coleman, died Friday, September 17, 2004 at her residence. Graveside services will be 3:00 p.m. Monday, September 20, 2004 at the Coleman cemetery Pavilion with Rev. Patrick Bennett officiating. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Mrs. Diaz was born June 10, 1963 in Morton, Texas, a daughter of Raymond Wirt Jarvis and Clara Vielguth Jarvis. She grew up and attended school in Rising Star. She married Guadalupe "Lupe" Diaz on December 17, 2001 in Coleman. She worked as a Certified Nurses Aide and was a Baptist.

Survivors include her husband, Lupe Diaz of Coleman; four daughters, Patricia "Patty" Suarez of Anson, Theresa Fulcher of Bangs, Brandy Loyd of Coleman, Kimberly Loveland of Florida; one son, Jacob Rider of Coleman; two sisters, Rae Jean Jarvis of Coleman, Betty Watkins of Stockton, California; one brother, J.B. Jarvis of Rising Star; three grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Linda Sue Parks.

STANTFORD E. (BUTCH) HENSON, 61 of Tucson, Arizona, died September 3, 2004. Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Sunday, September 19, 2004 at Gouldbusk cemetery. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman, Texas. The body was cremated.

Butch was born November 17, 1942 in Coleman, the son of Stantford Washington Henson, Jr. and Evelyn Kilgore Benson. He grew up and attended school in Brady and served in the United States Army. He moved to Tucson 30 years ago from Abilene and was a loader operator.

Survivors include two sons, Stanley Henson of Midland, Robert Henson of Tucson, Arizona; two sisters, Bonnie Eubank of Mineral Wells, Wanda Lothringer of San Antonio, eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Ann Martin and one son, Gerald Henson.

L. P. "Whitt" Whittington, age 87, life-long resident of Glen Cove, died Friday, September 10, 2004 at his home in Glen Cove. Graveside funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 13 at the Glen Cove cemetery Pavilion with Brother Burlie Taylor officiating. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Whitt was born February 20, 1917 in Glen Cove, Texas, a son of the late I. C. and Lula Richardson Whittington. He grew up in Glen Cove and attended school there and in Coleman. During World War II he served in the United States Army. On June 10, 1953, he married Lucy Jones in Coleman. He was a stock farmer and a member of Glen Cove Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Lucy Whittington of Glen Cove; four children, Nelda Copley of Glen Cove, Joe Stinson of Coleman, Mary Anderson and husband Ray of Ballinger and James Whittington of Brownwood; four grandchildren, Keith Copley of Talpa, Robert Copley of Splendora, Stephanie Moore and husband Doug of Valera and Joy McDaniel and husband Lee of Ballinger; six great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family visitation will be held on Sunday from 4:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to South Park Development Center, 2605 Morris Sheppard Drive, Brownwood, Texas 76801 or the Glen Cove cemetery Association, c/o Betsy Davis, 451 CR 449, Coleman, Texas 76834 or the donor’s favorite charity.

NELLEN HUDSON, age 100, of Coleman died Tuesday, September 7, 2004 at Holiday Hill Nursing Home in Coleman. Funeral service will be held on Friday, September 10 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Coleman with Dr. G. Dean Coultas officiating. Burial will follow in the Coleman City cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

She was born Nellen Kathryn Starling on February 7, 1904 in Comanche County, Texas, a daughter of Walter B. and Maretta Pinkard Starling. She grew up in Comanche County and graduated from Blanket High School. She attended Howard Payne in Brownwood and taught school at Hasse and Proctor. On June 18, 1925 she married Thomas J. "Cowboy" Hudson in Blanket and he preceded her in death on July 28, 1981. Nellen lived in Novice from 1929-1955 and then moved to Coleman. She was a farmer and rancher and an avid bridge player. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Nichols Sunday School Class and the Aldersgate Guild.

She is survived by three sons, Kenneth and wife Doris Hudson of Moran, Neil and wife Marie Hudson of Coleman and Dwight Hudson of Coleman; one sister, Billeye Jones of Stephenville; ten grandchildren, Michael Hudson, Larry Hudson, Debbie Rummage, Randy Hudson, Becky Hollobaugh, Linda Thaxton, Daniel Hudson, David Hudson, Kathy Cole and Jefflyn Miller; 19 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren.

Family visitation will be held on Thursday from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the DeeDee Hudson Scholarship Fund, c/o Santa Anna National Bank, P. O. Box 668, Santa Anna, Texas 76878.

Our beloved son Donald Edward Starnes, Jr. went to be with our Savior on August 28, 2004, in Kerrville, Texas. He was born June 18, 1957 and was 47 years old at the time of his death.

Donny graduated from Coleman High School in 1975, and received his B. S. degree from San Angelo State University with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry. He went to the Police Academy in Austin and was a police officer at the University of Texas.

He was a member of the First Christian Church and was a junior deacon. He played all sports in high school. Donny received the JETS Engineering Scholarship when he graduated from high school. He was president of the Kiwanis Key Club and received the Kiwanis Good Citizenship Award his senior year. Also during his senior year of high school, he was voted Class Favorite.

Donny is survived by his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Don Starnes of Coleman; cousins, Larry Hector, Gary Hector, Greg Hector, Jane Taylor, Jean Coulter, Dr. JoAnn Ford, Jacki Bucci, and Patty Burkemper; and his aunt, Dorris Magness.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Myron Close and Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Starnes.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 31 at 2:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with The Rev. Dr. Henry N. Chisholm officiating, Dr. G. Dean Coultas assisting and eulogy given by Jody Payne. Burial will follow in the Coleman cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Larry Hector, Gary Hector, Bill Coulter, Jody Payne, Bruce Ransberger and Ed Pryor.

Family visitation will be held on Monday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home.
