John Bonds Snedegar
(September 27, 1923 - August 23, 2013)

U.S. Veteran - John B. Snedegar, 89, of Bangs, Texas, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on August 23, 2013, at his home (the Big 6) in Bangs Texas.

The son of Maggie Bonds and John Thomas Snedegar, he was born on September 27, 1923 in Coleman County, Texas.

A child of the Great Depression, John B. left home at the age of 15 to begin work in the Civilian Conservation Corp, a New Deal program for youth and later was a part of the National Youth Administration. He was employed at the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi, Tx. when he volunteered for the Army Air Corps, serving in the European theater during World War II, during which time he was awarded several medals, including seven Bronze Stars. John was honorably discharged at the end of the war as a sergeant. After leaving the military, John attended Hardin Simmons University in Abilene and then worked as a contractor in the Coleman area. In 1967, he went to work in the civil service for the United States Air Force, first in Laredo and then at Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock, where he remained until his retirement in 1990. John B. and Janeria built their retirement home, the Big 6, in Bangs Texas where they enjoyed the country life for the last 22 years.

John B. married the love of his life, Janeria Elizabeth Lynn on February 15, 1957 in Coleman. John B. was a loving family man who enjoyed music, hard work, fishing, boating, and a good game of 42 and dominoes.

John B. was a member of Central Baptist Church in Coleman, where he formerly served as a deacon.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 56 years, Janeria Snedegar of Bangs; one half-sister Elsie Lee of Coleman; four daughters Susan Barnes and husband Greg of Lubbock, Lisa Todd and fiancé Patrick Dunn of Waxahachie, Johnna McArthur and husband Mac of Godley, and LeeAnn Shaw and husband Mike of Lawrence, Kansas; and two sons, Stephen Snedegar of Clyde and Jason Snedegar of Austin. John is also survived by 7 grandchildren, Nathan John Barnes and wife Leslee of Fort Worth, Josh Barnes and wife Isabel of Fort Worth, Suzanna Barnes of Austin, Mary Beth Pritz of Plano, Michael John Varett of Germany, and Carter and Mason Shaw of Lawrence, Kansas, along with great-grandchildren, Madison and Parker Pritz and Gabriel Gillespie of Plano, Braden Varett of Plainview. John also leaves behind two step-grandsons, Hank McArthur of Lawton, Oklahoma, and Tyler McArthur of Andrews.

John is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Geneva Arnold and nephew, Michael Arnold.

Funeral services will be at10:00 a.m. Monday, August 26, 2013 in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel in Coleman officiated by Rev. Dr. Nathan J. Barnes and assisted by Rev. Chip Pinkerton. Burial will follow in the Coleman cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 25 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan, Coleman, Texas 76834.

Pallbearers will be Stephen Snedegar, Greg Barnes, Joshua Barnes, Patrick Dunn, William Canada, and Mike Shaw. Honorary pallbearers will be Carter and Mason Shaw.

Memorials may be made to Central Baptist Church in Coleman and Solaris Hospice in Brownwood.

Alvin Asa Bates
(February 9, 1936 - August 20, 2013)

U.S. Veteran - Alvin Asa Bates, age 77, of Silver Valley, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at his residence, with his family by his side. Graveside funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 23 at the Silver Valley cemetery Pavilion with Hubert Rutherford officiating. Interment icon will follow in the Silver Valley cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Alvin was born February 9, 1936 in Silver Valley, a son of J. C. "Charley" Bates and Davette Wilson Bates. He grew up in Silver Valley, attended school there and graduated from Novice High School. Alvin served his country in the United States Army. He drove a truck for over 30 years for Merchant Motor Lines.

On March 17, 1989 he married Patricia Childers in Abilene, Texas. He was a member of Silver Valley Community Church.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia, of Silver Valley; one son, Maury Bates of Goldsboro; three daughters, Misty Davis and husband Chris of Aledo, Cheryl Huddle and husband Bobby of Silver Valley and Joy Toothaker of Novice; six grandchildren, Marcus Christensen, Malia Bates, Katie Davis, Pierson Davis, Trinity Toothaker and Kaylee Toothaker; three sisters, Lucille Day of Lake Brownwood, Minnie Chamblin of Odessa and Charlene Cole of Gouldbusk; one brother, Jim Bates of Dallas; many nephews, nieces and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Raymond Bates and David Lee Bates and a sister, Mary Frances Jones.

Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, Coleman, Texas.

Memorials may be made to Hendrick Hospice, 1682 Hickory, Abilene, Texas 79601.

Elsie Marie Velo
(June 30, 1923 - August 15, 2013)

Elsie Marie Velo, 90, of Coleman, passed away on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at Holiday Hill Nursing Home in Coleman. Graveside funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 18, 2013 at the Coleman cemetery Pavilion with Rev. Kermit Sorrells officiating. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Elsie Marie Velo was born June 30, 1923 in Coleman County, the daughter of Henry and Beulah Wheeler Velo, and has lived here all her life. She attended school at Bowen Centennial and one year at the old Coleman High School. In 1940, she went to work as a waitress at the White Lily Cafe. She later worked at the Coleman Hotel Coffee Shop for Blackie Conger. She also worked at the Manhattan Cafe and Conger's Cafe. In 1987, she went to work at Munden's Discount Store. She retired in 1992, when Munden's closed.

Survivors include one son, Donald Velo of Bella Vista, Arkansas; two nieces, Sandra Humphries of Greenville, Angeline Randall of Chattanooga, Oklahoma; five nephews, Allen Velo of Boerne, Anton Velo of Belton, Andrew Velo of Hazel Green, Wisconsin, Michael Velo of Siloan Springs, Arkansas, Morris Ray Velo of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one sister-in-law, Jewel Velo of Lawton, Oklahoma.

She was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers.

Family visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saturday, August 17, 2013 at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 West Pecan Street, Coleman.

Lula Mae "Granny" Mills
(April 10, 1911 - August 2, 2013)

Lula "Granny" Mills, 102, of Coleman died Friday, August 2, 2013 at her residence. Graveside funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 5, 2013 at the Coleman City cemetery Pavilion with Pastor Darrell Brown officiating. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Lula "Granny" Mills was born April 10, 1911 in Rockwall County, Texas, the daughter of James Cornelius Gilliam and Dorah Blue Gilliam. She moved to Coleman County at a young age and attended school in the Buffalo Community. She married John Thomas Mills on March 31, 1928 in a horse and buggy at Dyers Crossing on Hord’s Creek because the water was too high for them to cross. John Thomas preceded her in death in 1958. Granny Mills worked as a cook for over 40 years at the Dixie Pig and the Tradewinds Restraunts. She was well known for homemade pies. She gave a strong Christian influence to her family and was a member of North Coleman Baptist Church.

Survivors include one sister, Lena B. Smith of San Angelo; one daughter, Tommie Sue Brooks and husband, Tommy, of Coleman; one son, Jesse Mills, Sr. of Coleman, 13 grandchildren, Nita Williams of Coleman, Johnny Dempsey of Coleman, Rusty Mills of Coleman, Lori Duquette of Coleman, Debbie Burdick of Coleman, Morris Brooks of Coleman, Rhonda Capps of Pontotoc, Billy Brooks of Coleman, Jesse Mills, Jr., of Coleman, Trina Whinery of Brownwood, Tammy Arreola of Brownwood, Jessica Mills of Coleman, Andrea Mills of Coleman; 33 great grandchildren, 18 great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Patsy June Dempsey; one son, Bobbie Glen Mills; one great grandson, Rocky Whinery, II; five brothers, Bonnie Gilliam, Connie Gilliam, Grady Gilliam, Gerome Gilliam, Claude Gilliam; three sisters, Cora Gilliam Smith, Novie Gilliam Seals, Sybil Gilliam Nichols; one daughter-in-law, Wilma Mills.

Family visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, August 4, 2013 at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 West Pecan Street, Coleman.

Jesse Graviel Jauregui
(December 3, 1943 - July 27, 2013)

Jesse Graviel Jauregui, age 69, of Coleman, passed away Saturday, July 27, 2013 at an Abilene hospital. Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 1 in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Norman Lapinski officiating. Burial will follow in the Burkett cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Jesse was born December 3, 1943 in Randolph, Wisconsin, a son of Peter Jauregui and Mary Lenarez Jauregui. He grew up in Randolph, Wisconsin where he attended school. In 1961 he married Connie Martinez in Juneau, Wisconsin. Following their marriage, they lived in Chicago for several years and then in Waukesha for two years before moving to Coleman in 1968. Jesse worked at Taylor Motor Company for many years. He retired from the City of Coleman where he was employed as a mechanic. He was a member of the Assemblies of God and attended Jesus Saves Ministries. He is survived by his wife, Connie Jauregui of Coleman; six children, Mary Angela Orange and husband Doran of Austin, Myra Yvonne Lapinski and husband Norman of Chicago, Bridget Michelle Herrera and husband Ernest of Taylor, Jesse Jauregui, Jr. and wife Isabel of Abilene, Starsky G. Jauregui of Tyler, Justin Randall of Taylor; 10 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; four brothers, Roger Jauregui of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, JohnnyJauregui of Chicago, Joe and Fidencio Jauregui both of Waukesha, Wisconsin; three sisters, Betty Salinas, Mary Jane Gonzales and Pauline Patlan, all of Waukesha, Wisconsin; two half-brothers, Joe and Juan Jauregui; four step-sisters and one step-brother; former daughter-in-law, Christina Jauregui of Dublin, Ohio. He was preceded in death by a brother, Danny Jauregui.

There will be a service/visitation at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, 400 W. Pecan Street, Coleman, Texas.

Lillian Champion Latimer
(January 22, 1917 - July 26, 2013)

Lillian Champion Latimer, age 96, of Abilene and former Novice and Coleman resident, died Friday, July 26, 2013 at an Abilene nursing home. Graveside funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 29 at the Coleman cemetery Pavilion with Bob Martin, minister at Elm Street Church of Christ in Coleman, officiating. Interment icon will follow in the Coleman City cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, Coleman, Texas. She was born Minnie Lillian Breeding on January 22, 1917 in Oplin, Texas, a daughter of Tommy Breeding and Delphia Clements Breeding. She grew up in Oplin and graduated from Oplin High School in 1934. In 1938 she married James Archie Champion and he preceded her in death on January 22, 1969. In 1972 she married Virgil Latimer in Coleman and they were married for 13 years, when he preceded her in death. Lillian lived in many places in Texas including Cross Plains, Cottonwood, Silver Valley, Novice, Coleman, Lake Brownwood, Bangs and finally Abilene, where she has lived for over 20 years. While living in Coleman, she was a sales clerk for J. E. Stevens Company. She was a member of the Novice Church of Christ. She loved to travel and had visted most of the 50 states. She also enjoyed quilting and made many beautiful quilts for her family. She is survived by her daughter, Gail Agnew and husband Marvin of Belton, their daughter Cinci Mitchell and husband Jimmie of Beeville, and their children Cass and Clanci Mitchell; Gail's son, Murray Agnew and wife Brandy and their children Colton and Charley Agnew all of Groesbeck; Lillian's son, Tommie Weldon Champion and wife Shirley, and their daughter Melissa Fisher and husband Michael all of Abilene; one brother, Vernon (Bud) Breeding and wife Billie of New Braunfels. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond and Clarence; and three sisters, Myrtle, Eva and Veda. Memorials may be made to the donor's charity of choice.

Ila Mavis Croft
(February 14, 1932 - July 18, 2013)

Ila Mavis Croft, 81, of Coleman, died Thursday, July 18, 2013 at her residence. Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 21, 2013 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, 400 West Pecan Street, Coleman, with Rev. Rocky Lindley officiating. Burial will follow in the Coleman City cemetery. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

She was born Ila Mavis Preas on February 14, 1932 in Coleman to Roy Creston Preas and Ila B. Yancy Preas. She grew up and attended school in Coleman. On August 11, 1949, she married Cleo "Buddy" Croft in Coleman. He preceded her in death on January 9, 2006. She was a stay at home mom, raising 10 children and was a member of Bible Baptist Church.

Survivors include nine children, Margie and Ray Valdez of Brownwood, Wayne and Linda Croft of Brownwood, Gigger and Sheilia Croft of Freeport, Debbie Dunn of Miller Grove, Bobby Croft of Coleman, Tammy Thomas of Hollister, Missouri, Opal and Darrell Fletcher of Coleman, Marie and Rusty Mills of Coleman, Buddy and Brandy Croft of Abilene; seven brothers and sisters, Gloria Anglin of Austin, Mary Childers of Austin, Cornelia Scott of Rockport, Jerry Preas of Midland, Bob Johns of Guam, Glen Johns of Austin, Windel Preas of Houston; 28 granchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cleo "Buddy" Croft; one son, Douglas Croft and one grandson, T.K. Goree.

Family visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday at Stevens Funeral Home.

Martha Louise Paulos
(October 30, 1947 - July 16, 2013)

Martha Louise (Kraker) Paulos, 65, of Ford City, Pennsylvania, died Tuesday, July 16, 2013 in UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 23 from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, Coleman, Texas. Graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Coleman City cemetery Pavilion with Tracy Bartley officiating.

She was born October 30, 1947 in Coleman, Texas, a daughter of Albert and Jane (Jennings) Kraker.

Martha was a member of the First Methodist Church, Leechburg. She was a social worker and was formerly employed by Family Services of W. PA, Haven of Tarentum, Evergreen Homes and was the manager for the Senior Center of Dayton, PA. She had been recently employed at Walmart of Natrona Heights.

She loved spending time with her grandchildren and watching the Pirates, Steelers and Penguins.

Surviving are husband, Gus T. Paulos of Ford City, two daughters, Audri (Craig) Levering of Austin, TX, and Amber White of Frederick, MD, brother, Albert Kraker of Lubbock, TX, sister, Marilyn (Van) Ross of San Angelo, TX, sister, Alyce (Mickey) Bartley of Goldthwaite, TX, sister, Nancy Kennemer of Lubbock, TX, granddaughter, Ashlyn White, granddaughter, Eva Levering, grandson, Theo Levering.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents.

Madie Opal Hester
(August 2, 1922 - August 2, 2013)

Madie Opal Hester, 91, died Friday, August 2, 2013 at her residence. Graveside service will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 4, 2013 at the Brown Ranch cemetery Pavilion. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Madie Opal Hester was born August 2, 1922 in Silver Valley, the daughter of Charles Oudes Morgan, Sr. and Ida Jewel Thompson Morgan. She grew up in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School in 1940. She owned the Little Bear Grocery Store in Coleman for many years. She married Walter C. Hester on February 15, 1975. Following their marriage, Madie and Walter moved to Angleton. In 2002, they moved back to Coleman. Madie loved sports, whether it was the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks or the Texas Rangers. This past July, she went with her son and granddaughter to see the Texas Rangers play in Arlington. She was a member of the Elm Street Church of Christ.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Smith of Santa Anna, Rickey Smith of Memphis; six grandchildren, Christy Ellis of Brownwood, Jason Smith of Memphis, Jeffrey Smith of Lubbock, Chad Smith of Lubbock, Heather Smith of San Angelo, Shana Bui of Virginia; nine great grandchildren; one sister, Marie Stevens and husband, Cliff, of Coleman; two brothers-in-law, Truman Smith of Red Oak, Kenneth Smith of Valera; step-daughter, Charlene Ware of San Marcos and her special care-giver, an angel sent by God, Sandra McWhirter of Coleman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, on November 8, 2002; one brother, C.O. Morgan, Jr. and an infant daughter, Linda JoAnn Smith.

Memorials may be sent to the Brown Ranch cemetery Association.
