Bernice Burnett Miears Parker
Bernice Burnett Miears Parker of Harper passed away at home on her ranch in Kimble County on Friday, October 18, 2002.
Services were Monday, October 21, at 10 a.m. in the First Baptist Church of Harper with burial in the Noxville cemetery. Dr. James J. Englemann and Rev. Jack Cook officiated. Organist/soloist was Kimberly Barrett. Arrangements were under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home of Fredericksburg.
Bernice was born July 13, 1936, in Medina to Luther Thomas and Willie Veda Norwood Miears. She married
LaVon H. Parker April 11, 1957, in Seguin. Bernice ranched with her husband and was a homemaker for her children and grandchildren. She was a beautician by trade, getting her diploma from the Cosmotolgy School in Kerrville.
Survivors include her husband, LaVon, of Harper; two daughters, Linda Lea Mauldin of Harper and Cynthia Ann Parker of Mountain Home; seven grandchildren, Chad Holmes, Ben Mauldin, Nathan Mauldin, Timothy Holmes, Bethany Mauldin, Nevi Mauldin and Shiloh Mauldin and two great-grandchildren, Andrea and Julia Mauldin. She is also survived by two brothers, Burl Miears and wife, Charlene, of Como and Charles Miears and wife, Bonnie, of Ingram; one sister Ruby and husband, George, May of Eden.
She was preceded in death by a son, Sammy D. Parker who died in 1988, her mother and father, one brother, Harold Miears, and one sister, Dorothy Kane.
Pallbearers were Chad Holmes, Ben Mauldin, Nathan Mauldin, Alvin Phel, Robert Bowers and Bartley Parker.
Memorials may be made to the Harper Volunteer Fire Department, Vista Care Hospice or the charity of your choice.
Jesus Antonio Menchaca
Jesus Antonio Menchaca, 75, of Junction, passed away December 27, 2002, in Round Rock. Funeral services were held Monday, December 30, at 2 p.m. in St. Theresa Catholic Church in Junction. Burial was in Little Mexico cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Aubrey Fife Funerals.
Mr. Menchaca was born in Kimble County December 24, 1927. He retired from the Texas Highway Department after 37 years of service, and was a World War II veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Maria, of Junction; two daughters, Cindy Mendez and husband, Ramon, of Round Rock and Rebecca Sanchez, also of Round Rock; two brothers, Vicente Menchaca of Junction, and Andres Menchaca of San Antonio; one grandson, Rodolfo Sanchez of Round Rock and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Joe Hernandez, Edward Menchaca, Apolonio Menchaca, Rodolfo Sanchez, Monty Espinosa and Ricky DeLos Santos. Honorary pallbearers were Rogelio Menchaca, Oscar Menchaca, Nino Torres, Hector Menchaca, Evers Schmidt, A.J. Ivy, Richard Horne, and Les Williams.
James Edward ‘Eddie’ Clifton
James Edward "Eddie" Clifton, age 47, of Junction, died Sunday, December 22, 2002, at Hill Country Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 27, at Graham Funeral Home with the Rev. Cecil Conner officiating. Burial followed in the Junction cemetery.
Pallbearers were Larry Clifton, Douglas Carroll, Jacob Carroll, Larry Clifton, Jr., Bobby Murr and Lloyd Powers.
Mr. Clifton was born in Cleves, Ohio, on September 12, 1955. He worked for Chem-Pac.
Eddie was preceded in death by his father, James W. Clifton, a brother, Red Clifton and a sister, Mary Clifton.
Survivors include his mother, Sylvia Dean Clifton of Junction; two brothers, Kenny Clifton of Ohio and Larry Clifton of Junction; five sisters, Linda Grant of Ohio, Cathy Lewis of Houston, Becky Baker of Ohio, and Peggy Carroll and Patricia Clifton, both of Junction; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
J.T. Cox
J.T. Cox, 83, passed away on Friday, December 20, 2002, in Ft. McKavett. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m on Monday, December 23, in Camp Wood. Pallbearers were Calvin Powers, Jason Powers, Brandon Powers, Cody Cox, Sonny Shanks, Glenn Murr, Lowell Jessup, and Junior Hatley. Honorary pallbearers were Carroll Powers, Sr., Robin Sweeten, George Sweeten, Marshall Craig, Louis Lemos, and Buster Hukel.
A resident of Ft. McKavett since 1979, J.T. was born to Emerson and Mabel Cox on December 11, 1919. He graduated from Mertzon High School in Irion County, in 1938.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps after graduation, where he proudly served his country for a total of five years before and during WW II. J.T. married
Helen Ruth "Rusty" Moore on May 10, 1945, in San Angelo.
He was a member of the Church of Christ and served on the Nueces Canyon CISD school board. A lifetime rancher, J.T. owned and operated ranches in Irion, Stonewall, Edwards, Nolan and Kimble Counties.
J.T. was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Rusty, who passed away on March 16.
He is survived by one daughter, Sherry Lynn Powers and her husband, Calvin, of Camp Wood; one son, Walter W. "Speck" Cox and his wife, Coralie, of Hale Center; one granddaughter, Stephanie Lynn Powers of Uvalde; three grandsons, Cody J. Wallace Cox of Abilene, Brandon Jean Powers and his wife, Kristi, of Iraan, and Jason Ray Powers and his wife, Carrie, of Grandfalls and one great-granddaughter, Carli Ann Powers of Grandfalls.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Nelson Funeral Homes of Camp Wood. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice VistaCare in Kerrville.
Elvergne M. Boyce
Former Junction High School teacher Elvergne M. Boyce died Jan. 4, in Dallas, after a long illness.
Born Roy Elvergne McFarland on Feb. 15, 1915, in Dunn, she grew up there and on a farm near Snyder. For several years after her graduation from Hardin-Simmons College, she taught in Post, Junction and Moody schools, and attended summer terms of the University of Texas Law School in Austin. In Junction, she is remembered as a popular teacher of commercial and business subjects.
She was married
to J.W. Marrs of Temple, on May 31, 1940. For five years following his death in 1961, she owned and managed Marrs Lumber Company in Victoria. In 1966, she was married
to Col. Lawrence Stuart, a U.S. Air Force flight surgeon, who died in 1985 in St. Petersburg, Florida. In 1990, she was married
to George Boyce of St. Petersburg, who preceded her in death in 1996.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. David B. Marrs and his wife Lucinda, of St. Louis; her daughter, Catherine L. Marrs of Dallas; six grandchildren, and several nephews and nieces, including Jean Froneberger of Junction.
A member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, and the Altar Guild of the Episcopal Church, she was a Sunday School teacher and an active volunteer and crusader for various patriotic and civic causes. She was also an avid traveler, reader of current events, and a Masters duplicate bridge player who participated in several international tournaments, and fondly remembered playing against Omar Sharif in London.
A memorial High Mass was celebrated for her on January 7, at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Dallas.
Jane ‘Janie’ Glenn Lemmons
Graveside services for Jane “Janie'' Glenn Lemmons, 65, of Harper were held in Harper cemetery on December 28, 2002. She died on December 24, in Fredericksburg.
She was born in Brady April 1, 1937, to Jesse and Jackye Harvey Glenn and married
George Lemmons. He preceeded her in death.
Janie is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Thorne of St. Louis, Missouri; three sons, Richard Thorne of Euless, Robert Thorne of Harper and Ronald Thorne of Anaheim, California.
She is also survived by nine grandchildren; one great grandchild; one sister, Roberta ''Biddy” Harkrider of Brady and locally by cousins, Melvin and Cecil Conner.
Neil Wayne Rizk
Neil Wayne Rizk, 63, of Spring, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 24, 2002, at his residence.
He was born on May 23, 1939, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Carl and Lenore Taylor Rizk and graduated from East High School. Rizk attended the University of Iowa and Drake University before serving four years in the Air Force.
Rizk owned and operated the Sunrise Ranch in Kimble County where he took in foster children. His foster son, Mickiel Hodge, graduated from Junction High School and will celebrate his twenty year class reunion later this year.
Rizk worked as a consultant for the last twelve years helping many foster families around the Houston area.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Lenore Taylor Rizk, and is survived by his father, Carl Rizk of Houston; sister, Norma Carole Ridout of Des Moines, Iowa; foster son and daughter-in-law, Mickiel and Dani Hodge of Friendswood; foster son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Donna Hodge of Fort Drum, New York, and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Monday, December 30, 2002, at 11 a m. in the chapel of George H. Lewis and Sons, in Houston with the Rev. Douglas J. Tucker of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church officiating.

Ila Christine Ashley
Ila Christine Ashley went home to be with her Lord and Savior on January 6, 2003. Ila was born in Parker County to Vance and Lena Millsap on November 5, 1912.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 8, at the First Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Burial followed in Junction cemetery. Arrangements were by Aubrey Fife Funerals.
Ila arrived in Kimble County in 1917, in a covered wagon with her father, mother and three sisters. She had a wealth of knowledge about the history of the local area and people.
Always willing to serve her church and community, she worked in the Junction Volunteer Fire Department and in later years was elected the Fire Department "Mom.” Ila worked at the Junction Post Office for many years. She carried the rural mail route until 1983, when she retired.
Ila did beautiful handwork, a career she began at eleven years of age, when she started quilting her first quilt. She was still making afghans and doing her needlework until her death. She was always anxious to share what she had made with all who came by to visit.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church and served tirelessly wherever she was needed, until her health no longer permitted it. She continued to keep in touch through members and pastors who would drop by to visit her.
Ila was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Earl Ashley and two children, Ila Erline Ashley and Arlen Earl Ashley; four sisters, Verna Davee, Athilene Meredith, Madge Rogers, and Fay Fellers.
She is survived by a daughter, Lenora Christine Fuhrman and son-in-law, Douglas; two sisters Merle Kinnard of Denton and Emma Davee of San Marcos and by numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Presley Gibb, Bill Gantt, Lewis Alexander, J.R. Kinnard, Robert Alexander, Van Fellers, Ralph Pyke and Jerry Fellers. Honorary pallbearers were the Deacons of the First Baptist Church.
Mary Jo Brown
Mary Jo Brown passed away on Monday, January 13, 2003, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Her courage, faith, determination, and will to live were a remarkable example for all, especially her family.
Services will be held at the First Baptist Church, Thursday, January 16, at 1:30 p.m with graveside services following at Masonic cemetery.
Mary Jo was born in Eldorado, to Porter Fears "Doc'' and Elva Fanny Rape, April 15, 1924. She was the youngest of eight children.
In 1941, she graduated as salutatorian from Sonora High School.
She was 16 when she met the love of her life, Blake Brown. They married
on October 3, 1943, in Los Angelos, California. Following World War II, Blake and Mary Jo returned to Texas, residing first in McCamey, Junction, and moving to Del Rio in 1954.
Mary Jo will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother and friend and for her many talents and leadership. She was a founding member of the Chit Chat Club in 1958. She was installed as the Eastern Star Worthy Matron in 1981-82, and, along with her husband, created the Merrily Mature program at First Baptist Church in Del Rio where they have been members since 1955.
Among her other civic activities she was a volunteer and officer for the Del Rio Chapter of the American Cancer Society and was involved in supporting her children's interests which included scouting, band, and youth center activities. Mary Jo took immense pride in being a homemaker and making her home a comfortable, happy place for family and friends.
Mary Jo will be missed by many.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Blake Brown, a son, Danny, and daughter-in-law, Cheri Brown of Blanket; a daughter, Gay, and son-in-law, Kermit Clark,of Oklahoma City; three granddaughters, Jamie Moore of Lake Brownwood; Shawn Key of El Reno, Oklahoma, and Toni Delp of MidWest City, Oklahoma; and four great-grandchildren, Chase Key, Justin Moore, Morgan Delp and Mitchell Delp.
She is also surived by three sisters, Velma Dutton of Junction, Polly Nettleton of Del Rio, and Wanda Neville of Sonora; one brother, Jack Raye of San Angelo and a multitude of nieces and nephews. She is lovingly remembered by many life long friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that gifts be made to the Blake and Mary Jo Brown and Lisa Lake Endowment Fund at the First Baptist Church, 301 Avenue G, Del Rio, Texas 78840.
Billy Ed Mansfield
Billy Ed Mansfield, 70, passed away January 12, 2003, in San Antonio. Funeral services were Wednesday, January 15, at 2 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church in Junction. Burial followed in Rocksprings cemetery, in Rocksprings. Arrangements were by Aubrey Fife Funerals.
Bill was born in Kerrville, July 30, 1932, to Lillie and Homer Mansfield. He graduated from Junction High School in 1949 and attended A&M; University where he received a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree.
Bill married
Hazel Ellen Brown on June 16, 1956, in Rocksprings. They lived in Del Rio where he was office manager of Texas Gas Distributing, Inc. Moving to Uvalde in 1966, he worked for the accounting firm of Meredith, Coleman and Dalrymple and later owned his own accounting business there. He also owned Ozona Wool and Mohair for 11 years.
In 1976 he purchased Kimble Hardware and Supply in Junction, which became known as Mansfield’s General Store and returned to Junction in 1980. His "Hunters Welcome" party was very well known and highly attended by hunters from all over.
In 1988 he was named Citizen of the Year and received the Lifetime Achievement award in 2002.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Bill was very active in the community and took an active part in many youth programs. He was a strong supporter of the Kimble County Youth Show, 4-H and FFA. He raised show goats for the local youth as well as surrounding areas. He had a rifle range on his ranch for the youth shooting sports.
He was also a member and served on the board of directors of the Kimble County Chamber of Commerce.
Bill was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Rhea Mansfield.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel Ellen of Junction, a son, Homer Mansfield and wife, Tommie Lynn, of Junction; a sister, Margaret Allen, of Junction; a granddaughter, Cheyenne Mansfield, of San Angelo, and a great-grandson, Thomas Rhea Guidry of San Angelo.
Pallbearers were Joe Gulley, Sam Allen, James Lawrence, Tom Johnston, Jerry Brawley, Philip Jacoby and Charles Hagood.
