LONG

John Franklin Long, age 77, of Shepherd, Texas, passed away Tuesday, October 5, 2004. He was born in Minden, Louisiana to James and Mary Long on January 26, 1927. He honorably serviced in our U.S. Army as Medical Supply Clerk in Japan from 1945 to 1946. He was an oilfield equipment Inspector from 1952 to 1986 working for National Supply. He solely enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking, gems(rock) and music, preferably instrumental guitar along with organ and piano.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Claudia Jean Long; daughters, “Lorene” Anita Long Larson, Carrie Ann Long McCulley, sister, Ima Lee Monzingo; granddaughter, Alyssa Darlene Long; step-grandchildren, Kimberly Newberry, Melody Muth; step-great-grandchildren, Mysti Newberry, Jonathan Newberry, Kasey Muth, Kourtney Muth; numerous nieces and nephews and other loving family members along with countless friends beyond measure.

Funeral services were held Thursday, October 7, 2004, 12:00 Noon at the Houston National Chapel, Houston, Texas. Judy Forsman officiated with interment at the Houston National Cemetery.

HEARN

Eva (Bickham) Hearn, 97, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, 10/09/04. She was born in Presidio, Texas in 1907. She grew up and raised her children in Calallen, Texas. She lived also in Clute and Houston, Texas and Grants, New Mexico. She lived the last 25 years of her life in Coldspring, Texas. In her long life, Eva out lived three wonderful husbands, Bill Hearn, Hale Smith, and Cecil Moore.

She was dearly loved by her three sons, William Clyde Hearn and wife, Marti of Coldspring, Roy C. Hearn and wife, Earlene of Clute, and John C. Hearn and wife, Woody of Conroe. She was one of two in her graduating class at Calallen High School in 1924. She was a good christian lady and a Sunday School teacher much of her life. She loved people and was loved and will be missed by all who knew her. She’s with the LORD now!!

Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church of Coldspring, TX, Thursday, October 14, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held Friday, October 15, 2004, 2:00 p.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery, Corpus Christi, Texas.

HOSEA

Ethel Sarah Hoot Hosea of Coldspring, Texas, passed away Saturday, October 16, 2004 at the age of 90. She was born in Stephens Creek, Texas to Leonard N. Hoot and Agnes Harrell Hoot Williamson on February 15, 1914. She is preceded in death by her loving and caring husband, Julius Carl Hosea; father, Leonard V. Hoot; mother, Agnes Virginia Harrell Hoot Williamson; siblings, Thomas Jefferson Williamson, Thomas Wyatt Williamson, Jennie Adla Hoot Goodman, Bonnie May Hoot Canter.

She is survived by her brother, Fred Winfrey Hoot; sister Lela Bell Williamson Thomson and husband, Ben; nephews, Robert Leonard Hoot and wife, Delta, Charles Truitt Thomson; nieces, Amelia Sue Hoot and husband, Gene, Tanya Urban Moore, Sue Zanne Williamson Urbis and husband, Richard, Madge Williamson Vacker and husband, Doug, Carol Sue Thomson Winfrey, Clarrisa Williamson Williford and husband, Brandon; nieces-in-law, Christine Haynes Carter and Mary Raun Williamson; special friend, Aggie Mae Carter Street; numerous grand-nephews and grand-nieces, cousins and friends. A special thank you to Sheryle and Keith Ellison, Reverend Joseph K. Kallandan, and Odyssey Hospice of Conroe.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 19, 2004, 10:00 a.m. at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel, Coldspring, Texas with interment at Center Hill Cemetery, Oakhurst, Texas.

HAM

Ola Mae Ham of Coldspring, Texas, passed away Sunday, October 17, 2004 at the age of 96. She was born in Nachodoches, Texas to George and Dolly Hutchison on October 26, 1907. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Dennie Davis Ham and her daughter, Ola Mae Campbell.

She is survived by her daughters, Louise Marsh and husband, Eugene of Coldspring, Texas, Yvonne Aden and husband, John of Coldspring, Texas; sisters, Lou Emma Ham, Hazel Simmons, Wanda Theis; granddaughter, April Meise and husband, Gil of Long Island, New York; great-granddaughter, Dylan Christine Meise; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 20, 2004, 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Coldspring, Coldspring, Texas with interment at Peebles Cemetery, Goodrich, Texas.

GATES

Arthur Smith “A.S.” Gates of Cleveland, Texas, passed away Thursday, December 2, 2004 at the age of 81. He was born in Deadwood, Texas to John T. and Mineola Gates on July 15, 1923.

He is survived by his loving wife, Pauline Gates; son, Phillip Gates and wife, Po; grandchildren, Kellie Whitmire and husband, Clint, Cory Gates; great-grandchild, Mikayla Whitmire and his three brothers, Hice Gates, J.T. Gates and Harmon Gates and countless friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, December 4, 2004, 2:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, Cleveland, Texas. Rev. Carl Williamson and Rev. Melvin Holifield both conducted the service with interment at Pace-Stancil Memorial Rest Gardens. Pallbearers, Dewey Carpenter, Donald Taylor, John Lewis, Mike David, Jack Dutton, Joe Vermillion, Jerry Simon, Ken Stone; Honorary Pallbearers, Marvin Reeves, Sonny Lanford, Jack Pardee, Gary Blair, Vernon Hoffman and Maurice Webb all of which gracefully guided him to his final resting place.

SCOTT

Lorene M. Thomas Scott, age 87, passed away Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at Kingwood Medical Center. She was born January 20, 1917 to Eddie Bert Wesley Follis and Susan Lynn Follis. She resided in Cleveland, Texas for 66 + years. She was an active member of First Assembly of God Church and found great pleasure in her church family.

She is survived by her daughters, May Pearl Robbins, Bonnie Godwell and husband, Fritz, DeAnna Wilson and husband, Richard; sons, C. “Bill” Thomas and wife, Patsy, Burl Thomas and wife, Ruth, Royce W. Thomas, Sr., B. J. Thomas and wife, Martha, Alvy Ray Scott and wife, Marilyn; sister, Margie LaHaun and husband, Woody; twelve grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and many other loving family members and countless friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, December 10, 2004, 10:00 a.m. at First Assembly of God, Cleveland, Texas. Rev. Charles Wiggley conducted the service with interment at Cleveland Memorial Cemetery. A special thank you to the Pallbearers,

Joe Stanley, Mark Thomas, Logan Thomas, Phillip Nesbitt, Hunter Hott, Guy Nicholson, Cody Jackson and Dustin Jackson that helped her to her final resting place.

DIETZ

Wayne E. Dietz of Houston, Texas, passed away Sunday, December 12, 2004 at the age of 59. He was born February 27, 1945 in Big Spring, Texas to Nathan Eugene and Geraldine Dietz of whom preceded him in death.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sherry Dietz; son Nathan Wayne Dietz and wife, Ashley of San Antonio, Texas; daughter, Melissa Kay Dietz of Arlington, Texas; step-son, Chad Sells of Cleveland, Texas; step-daughter, Crystal Sells of Arlington, Texas; brother, Teddy Dietz and wife, Sarah of Big Spring, Texas; sister, Carolyn Davey and husband, Bill of Big Spring, Texas and Janet Bryant and husband, Kenny; grandchildren, Shelby Dietz, Dylan Dietz, Baylee Dietz, Karlee Dietz, Justin Sells, Camrin Langston.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 14, 2004 at 12:00 noon at Blessed Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Cleveland, Texas with interment at Evergreen Cemetery, Evergreen, Texas.

BATTEN

Martha Batten, longtime resident of Plum Grove, Texas, passed away on December 19, 2004. Born Martha Olive Thorn February 19, 1918 to Arthur and Alge Agnes Thorn in Kosciusko County, Indiana, she was 86 years of age. She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother Marvin and Jerome.

She was a dedicated, loyal, and faithful servant of the Lord Jesus Christ and was selfless in her devotion to God, her country, her family, and her community. During WWII she volunteered for service in the WAVES where she met and later married Ronal E. Batten. After the war she moved with her husband and first son to Texas where she completed her bachelors and masters degrees. She taught elementary grades in Dayton, Plum Grove, and Cleveland school districts. After retiring to spend more time with her two grandchildren she continued to serve God, family, and the people of Plum Grove. She was a member of Eastern Star, American Legion Post 253, Texas State Teachers Association, and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International a professional honorary society of women educators.

She is survived by her husband, Ronal E. Batten, Sr., her sister, Emmagene Thorn, her son, Ronal E. Batten, Jr. and wife, Pamela, her son, David J. Batten and wife, Karen, her grandson, Matthew Batten, and granddaughter, Megan Batten.

Funeral services were held Sunday, December 26, 2004, 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Plum Grove, Plum Grove, Texas. Pastor Roy Youngblood conducted the service with interment at Plum Grove Cemetery.
