Dillard
Sonny “Papaw” Dillard, 80, of Old River-Winfree passed away Monday, October 30, 2006 in the San Jacinto Methodist Hospital, surrounded by his family, after a year long battle with Leukemia. He was born August 26, 1926 and spent his lifetime in the Old River-Winfree area.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a Union Carpenter by trade working out of the Baytown Carpenters’ Local #1334. Though his life he drove crew boats, big trucks and worked on rice farms. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and traveling. In his younger days, he loved horses and working cows. He was a longtime supporter of Chambers County 4-H Clubs and the Barbers Hill FFA Chapter. He was a member of the South Dayton Baptist Church.
Services for Mr. Dillard will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 1, 2006 at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel in Dayton with interment to follow at Heirlawn Cemetery in Dayton. Visitation will be Tuesday, October 31, 2006, 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., at Pace-Stancil.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years: Lavinia Dillard of Old River-Winfree; sons and daughter-in-law: Tony and Jan Dillard of Dayton and Glyn and Kerry Dillard, Jr. of Devers; daughter and son-in-law: Barbara and James Tilton of Dayton; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; niece: Dorothy Pace of Blossom and special cousin: Lotus Marx of Texas City.
Pallbearers will be sons and grandsons: Tony Dillard, Glyn Dillard, James Tilton, Tooter Dillard, Kevin Dillard, Mike Tilton, Christopher Dillard and Cade Dillard.
The family would like to thank Dr. Kashif Ansari, Dr. Greg Terry and the staffs of the San Jacinto Methodist Hospital (2 South and 2 West), the Cancer Center and the Skilled Care Unit.
DeBlanc
Dorothy J. Mayo DeBlanc 75, of Ames, died Thursday, November 2, 2006, at the Sam Houston Gardens Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday November 8, 2006, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints in Liberty with burial following at Magnolia Park Cemetery in Dayton. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home. Services under the diretion of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton
Dorothy was born July 5, 1931 in Houston, to parents; Ivory and Mittie Davis Mayo, a former resident of Houston, and has resided in the Liberty area for the past nine years. She was a retired sales clerk for Battlestein’s, Frost Brothers, and Craig’s clothing stores, member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Liberty, graduate of the Phyllis Wheatley High School class of 1948, and enjoyed gardening, sewing, collecting dolls, and cooking.
Mrs. DeBlanc was preceded in death by her parents, brothers: Britt and Maurice Mayo, grandmother: Cora Lovick, and three grandsons: Nathan, Allen, and Terry, Jr. She is survived by her husband of 47 years: Walter DeBlanc of Ames, daughters: Regina Pinkney of Houston, Sandra Howard of Houston, Beverly Brown of AZ, Cora Broach of Houston, and Jeanne Wiggins of Houston, sons: Marvin Pinkney of El Paso, Reggie Brown of El Paso, Terry Brown of San Diego, and Walter DeBlanc, Jr. of Ames, 34 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Mire
Lloyd Edward Mire, 84 of Dayton died Thursday, November 9, 2006 in Baytown after an extended illness. Born January 31, 1922 in Beaumont, Texas to Samuel Andrew and Olymphe Seeley Mire, moving to Dayton when he was nine years old. He graduated from Dayton High School in 1940 as an outstanding football player and attended Southern Louisiana Institute, now known as University of Southern Louisiana. He retired from Amaco after 37 years.
Mire was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dayton, the Masonic Lodge #825, Eastern Star #233 Worthy Patron, Knights Templer of Texas #6, and the American Legion Post #512. He served on the City of Dayton Water Board and was an honorary member of the Dayton Historic Society. Mire served in the U. S. Army during World War II, 1942-1946, in the Field Artillery Battalion #265, European Theater. He received three bronze stars.
Services for Lloyd Mire will be 3:00 p.m., Sunday, November 12, 2006 at the First Baptist Church of Dayton with the Rev. Randy Piatt officiating. Interment will follow at Magnolia Park Cemetery under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home.
Mr. Mire was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Clarence Joseph Mire. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Lura Spencer Mire of Dayton.
For those who desire, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, the First Baptist Church of Dayton or the Gideon Society. The family will receive friends Saturday, 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.
Croft
Willie B. “Jim” Croft, 89, of Hardin, died Saturday, November 11, 2006, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 14, 2006, at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at Ryan Cemetery in Tarkington Prairie. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.
Jim was born March 31, 1917 in Tarkington Prairie, to parents; William L. and Frances Tanner Croft, was a life long resident of Tarkington Prairie and has resided in Hardin for the past three years. He was a retired owner and operator from the timber industry, and member, Sunday school teacher, and deacon of the Simmons Bottom Assembly of God Church. After retirement, Mr. Croft enjoyed working cattle.
Mr. Croft is survived by his daughter: Doris Peters and husband Aubrey of Hardin, grandchildren: Charolette Mercer and husband Charlie of Liberty, Charrisa Holy of Hardin, and Bruce Peters and wife Sheryl of Moss Hill, great-grandchildren: Justin and Jessie Mercer, Casey, Cadey, and Cindy Holy, and Nicole Beal and Jason Peters, great great-grandchildren: James Alan and Amber Nicole Beal, extended family members of three children, numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Cervantes
Martin Cervantes, 17, of Dayton died Tuesday, November 14, 2006 at home in Dayton, Texas. He was born July 19, 1989 in Dolores Hidalgo Guanajato, Mexico to parents Raphael and Juana Cervantes. He was currently a student at Dayton High School.
Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 17, 2006 at Immaculate Conception Church, Liberty, with Father David Edwards officiating. Interment will follow at a later date in Mexico. Rosary service will be 7:00 p.m., Thursday, November 16, 2006 at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home , Dayton. Visitation will be all day Thursday at the funeral home.
He is survived by his parents: Raphael and Juana Cervantes of Dayton; six brothers: Oscar Cervantes of Dayton, Ramon Cervantes of Dayton, Raphael Cervantes, Jr. of Dayton, Ernesto Cervantes of Dayton, Juan Antonio Cervantes of Mexico, and Miguel Angel Cervantes of Mexico; sisters: Anna Marivela Cervantes of Dayton and Norma Irais Cervantes of Mexico; also numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Deen
Gary Randall “Randy” Deen, 53, of Dayton died Wednesday, November 15, 2006 at home after an extended illness. He was born December 22, 1952 in Ashdown, Arkansas to parents, N. L. and Juanita Tallant Deen. He had been a resident of the Huffman area since 1968 where he was owner-operator of Deen’s Septic Systems.
Mr. Deen was very active in the Huffman Little League association, serving as President in 93-94, assistant coach for his three sons while they were growing up and participating in the Huffman Youth Athletic Football League. He was affiliated with the Atascocita Community Church.
Services will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 17, 2006 at the First Baptist Church in Huffman. Interment will follow at Huffman Cemetery under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton.
Mr. Deen was preceded in death by his grandparents: Nazer and Addie Ella Deen, and Perry and Mary Tallant. He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years: Sandra Ann Deen of Huffman; his three sons: Gary Clifton Deen and wife Krista of Humble, Travis Randall Deen and wife Misty of Kingwood, and Brent Charles Deen of Lackland AFB; brother: Ricky Ray Deen and wife Leslie of Huffman; sisters: Cathie Ann Deen Ropp and husband Tom of Huffman and Cynthia Kaye Deen Redwine and husband Aubrey of Bellville;
also one grandchild on the way, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Smesny
Joe Frank “Little Joe” Smesny, 83, of Eastgate entered eternal rest Wednesday, November 15, 2006 in Houston after an extended illness. He was born July 26, 1923, in Frýdek, Texas. He was the son of Mary and Papa Joe Smesny who came from Czechoslovakia in 1912. Joe lived his entire life among friends and family in Eastgate Community just West of Dayton. He wed the love of his life, Marveline Bode in October of 1949. Together they raised six children.
He was a longtime cotton and soybean farmer, member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, Czech Heritage Society, and past member of the Texas Farmers Union. He enjoyed playing 42 dominoes, old cars, and listening to Czech music.
Services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 18, 2006 at St. Anne’s Mission in Eastgate with Father Andy Moore officiating. Interment will follow at St. Anne’s Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home. Visitation will be 5:00 – 9:00 p.m., Friday, November 17, 2006 at Pace- Stancil Funeral Home with a Rosary at 5:00 p.m.
He is survived by his wife, Marveline Smesny of Dayton, his sisters: Lillian Kulak of Crosby and Eleanor Leibham of Crosby; his brothers: Jerry Smesny of Dayton and Emil Smesny of San Antonio. He is also survived by his sons: Joe Smesny and wife Andrea of Kingwood, Frank Smesny and wife Laurie of Kingwood, and Jim Smesny and wife Peggy of Eastgate; his daughters: Cynthia Norwood and husband Larry of Kirtland, Ohio, Dolly Stokes and husband Jim of Little Rock, Arkansas, Sheri Rice of Dayton, also six precious grandchildren: Joseph, Lauren, Lisa, Sarah, Ford, and Frank. He was loved by many friends, cherished by his entire family and will be greatly missed by all.
