Augustina Arriaga, 80, of Jasper, died at her home after a lengthy illness on July 6, 2008. A native of San Luis Potosi, Mexico she has lived in Jasper for the past 32 years and was a member of the Gethsemane Church.
Funeral services will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday July 8, 2008 at the Gethsemane Church on Milam St. in Jasper with interment to follow at the West Oaks Cemetery. Family will greet visitors on Monday evening at Forest Oaks from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
Survivors include sons Adrian & wife Juliana Arriaga, Lule & wife Belen Arriaga, and daughter Esperanza & husband Ismael Garza all of Jasper, Texas a adopted daughter Juanita Tovar of Jasper, Texas. Brothers Isidro Renteria of San Luis Potosi, Mexico, Jose Renteria of Mexico City, Mexico, and Ramon Renteria of Harlingen, Texas., Sisters Carmen Renteria of San Luis Potosi, Mexico, and Maria Renteria of Monterrey, Mexico. Twenty Two Grandchildren, and Twenty Six great-grandchildren. Former Daughters in law Jesus and Juana Ramirez of Jasper, Texas, and Rodrigo & Tomas Reyes of Sequin, Texas.

Eldon Gaines Chalker Sr.

Eldon Gaines Chalker Sr., 77, of Jasper, died at his home on July 15, 2008. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 18, 2008 at Forest Oaks Funeral Chapel with interment to follow at 1:00 p.m. in the Bold Springs Cemetery in Polk County near Livingston, Texas. Visitation will be Thursday, July 17, 2008 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A native of Polk County, he served his country as a member of the U.S. Army as a CPL. He moved to Jasper in 1965 as an Electrical Superintendent and worked until he retired in 1993. Survivors include his wife Martha Ann Chalker of Jasper, Texas. Sons Charles Eldon & Cindy Chalker of Livingston, Texas, & Eldon Gaines Jr. & Amy Chalker of Jasper. Daughters Sharon Lynn & Tim Lucas of Livingston, Texas and Tommie & Donald Morton of Jasper, Texas. Brother Cloyce Chalker of Colmesneil, Texas and sister Jean Davenport of Livingston, Texas. Grandchildren Michael, Tommy, Ty, Caleb, Bobby, Chris, Kimberly, Cammille, Mattie, and Ashley. Two great-grandchildren.

Harvey Newman, 80, of Jasper, passed away July 15, 2008, in Beaumont at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2008 at Forest Oaks Chapel with interment to follow at Little Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Forest Oaks Funeral Home on Friday, July 18, 2008 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
A native of Jasper, Texas he was a veteran of WWII, after school at the University of Texas he became employed with Kirby Lumber Company as a Chief Surveyor from 1951-1986. He then was employed with Temple Inland as a manager of small tract land sales from 1987-1997 when he retired. He was known for his love of the outdoors and many years ago he purchased and still currently owned Hamilton Lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents Buck & Anna Newman and a sister Maxine Newman Weaver. Survivors include a special friend Barbara Wilson of Jasper, Texas, a sister Ann Nell & Bob Herbst of Silsbee, Texas, nephews Randy & Debbie of Jasper, Texas, Rusty & Robin Herbst of Hudson, Texas, and Todd & Angela McDonald of Jasper, Texas, and a niece Kim & Chad Davis of Jasper, Texas.

Waynece Flournoy Sowell Lawson, 58, of Brookeland, TX, died at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont, TX. on Thursday August 7, 2008. Funeral services will be held on Sunday August 10, 2008. at 2:00 p.m. in Jasper at Forest Oaks Funeral Home with interment to follow at the Sowell Cemetery in San Augustine County.
Visitation will be Saturday August 9, 2008 at Forest Oaks Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
A native of San Augustine County, TX. she was a longtime resident of Jasper and was employed with the P.N. Ashy Store in Jasper for 26 years and also was a tax preparer for 17 years. She moved to Brookeland, Tx. 14 years ago.
Survivors include a husband Clarence Lee Lawson of Brookeland, TX. Son Franklin Ray Sowell and wife Kirshana of Jasper, and Elam Andrew Sowell and wife Elva Lorena of Jasper, TX. Clarence Lee Lawson Jr. and wife Melissa of Jasper, TX. and John David Lawson of Brookeland, TX. Stepfather Billy Gene Williams of San Augustine, TX. Sisters Nancy Boyette of San Augustine, TX. Barbara Abernathy of Spurger, TX. and Cindy Jenkins of New Caney, TX. Brothers Billy Joe Williams, Robby Gene Williams, and Shelton Williams all of San Augustine, TX. Adopted Mother Mary Ashy of Jasper, TX. Ten Grandchildren and Three Great-Grandchildren.

Shana Chaney, 35, of Sabine County, Texas, died Wednesday, August 13, 2008 near Jasper, Texas.
Visitation will be held Friday, August 15, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. til 10:00 a.m., with the service immediately to follow at Forest Oaks Funeral Home in Jasper.
Survivors include her parents, Johnnie and Carol Carnline of Erin; husband, James Chaney of Jasper; sons, Chris Tidwell and Corey Chaney; daughter Cari Chaney; brother, Stacey Tidwell; sister, Sherri Mowery; and one grandchild, Taylor Bobbit; all of Jasper.
William Melvin "Bill" Monday, Sr.

William Melvin "Bill" Monday, Sr., age 86, and a former resident of Albany, Bill found his place in Heaven on Wednesday, August 27, 2008. He passed away at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge. Bill was a native of Quitman, Texas, spending most of his childhood in Kaufman, Texas After serving in WWII with the Merchant Marines, Bill and his new bride resided in her hometown of Albany prior to moving to Baton Rouge in 1965. He worked as a Superintendent with the Carpenter's Local #1098 in Baton Rouge. While worshiping at Florida Boulevard Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, his church membership was at Old Zion Hill Baptist Church in Albany. He is survived by his loving bride of 60 years, Beatrice Cunningham Monday; son William M. "Bill" Monday, Jr. and his wife Sondra of Jasper, Texas; daughter, Teri Monday of Baton Rouge; grandson Michael Byerly of Sedalia, Missouri and three great-granddaughters. Preceding him in death were his parents, Lemeul Andrew and Willie Bell Cox Monday; grandson, Wesley Byerly; stepmother, Laura Monday and three sisters, Mavis, Lila and Jean. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral services from the chapel of Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home, west of Hammond on Saturday, August 30th at 11:00 a.m. with visitation from 9:00 a.m. until the service time. Rev. Alton Foster will officiate the services and interment will follow in Old Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

A native of Jasper he was employed with Grocer's Supply in Beaumont, Texas before transferring to Houston, Texas for the past 10 years as a manager for the Transportation Department with Grocer's Supply and continued to be employed until his death with 30 years of service.
Survivors include his mother Nell Harrison of Jasper, TX. a Nephew Jody and wife Tamara Harrison of Jasper, TX.
