Chester Walter "Popeye" Chambliss, 89, of Jasper, was born to Frank Hill Chambliss & Evie Bonner Chambliss on March 21, 1919 in Jasper, Texas, and passed from this life at his home on Saturday evening, January 10, 2009 at the age of 89 years and ten months. He is survived by his sons, Charles Wayne Chambliss & wife Carolyn of Jasper, Texas and Billy Ray Chambliss & wife Mary of Lufkin, Texas. Brothers Frank Hill Chambliss Jr. and Jim Chambliss both of Houston, Texas. Sisters Mary Jane Goings of Shelbyville, Texas and Polly Snyder of Porter, Texas. Four Grandchildren Shannon Chambliss of Jasper, Texas Dana Chambliss Robison of Columbus, Mississippi Jeff Chambliss of Buna, Texas and Kari Chambliss Leal of Lufkin, Texas. Five Great-grandchildren Jacob, Rachel & Joshua Robison Jason & Kadie Chambliss. In his early years he worked for Jasper County Lumber Company, then for Ealand & Wood Lumber Company in the daytime and at night he taught mechanics at the Vocational School on Highway 190 East. He later worked for Minyard & Company until the early 1960's when he started working for Taylor Machine Works out of Louisville, Mississippi, servicing yardsters for lumber yards. In 1972 he received the "Pops" award at Taylor as outstanding serviceman of the year. He had been a member of Beech Grove Baptist Church since 1993 and attended Sunday morning services until he became unable to drive about five years ago. A s we all know, "Popeye" was an outdoorsman. He loved to fish, hunt and farm. In the 1950's he & Toney Williams would fish together in the Neches River before the dam was built then he, Lucille & the boys would walk the mile long spillway to fish at the gates. Later, he and Dub Minyard fished together in Steinhagen Lake. He was a member of the Jasper Bass Club during the 1960's and the early 70's. Hunting was probably his first love. In the mid 60's he and Lucille built a camphouse on the Neches River where they stayed during hunting season, he would drive back and forth to work from the camp. Some of his hunting buddies were Elton Rawls, Travis Odom, and Luke Martindale. A memberof the Big Creek Community Sportsmen's Association from the early 1970's until 2004, when he could no longer hunt out in the woods. He discovered that he could kill just as many deer out of his kitchen window while sitting on a stool, so he gave up the conventional method. As soon as hunting season was over, he would began planning his spring planting season. He always planted vegetables as soon as the last frost was over, he knew when the last frost would be because he would refer to the Farmers Almanac that told him everything he needed to know from when the fish nwould bite to when to plant watermelons. "Popeye" even helped Jeff Martindale make cane syrup in 1989. Then he planted some sugar cane himself, and for next several years he cut the cane and got someone to make syrup for him. He loved going out to the cane patch on his 4-wheeler every day, to see how much it had grown overnight. For the past 10 years, his 4-wheeler was his legs when he was outside. He planted, hoed, and harvested his crop from it, and of course he did that bare-footed as he did not wear shoes once spring arrived unless he had to go to town, or went to church or to the doctor.
