It was there that she met her future husband, Tom, in a Sunday school class when they were both teenagers. After graduating from Jasper High School, Kathryn attended Stephen F. Austin State Teacher's College. Tom had been offered full football scholarships to numerous universities, including Baylor, SMU, TCU and Texas Tech, but chose to attend and play for SFA, since that was where Kathryn was attending college. The couple later married and made their home in Jasper. Tom was stationed in England in WWII, and when he returned home, they started a family. They had a daughter, Kathy, and a son, Tommy. Kathryn loved music & she loved to dance, and play the piano. She also loved to laugh, travel and drive fast. She was an accomplished Bridge player. Some of her happiest times were spent playing cards with her friends Iris, Barbara, Fredda, Madeleine, Thelma, Reete, Marianne, Virginia, Dess, Eleanor, Annie, Bernice and Kathleen. The couple had a close-knit group of friends with whom they loved to spend time. Kathryn was a gifted hostess. Along with the help of the family's beloved friend, Bertie Lee, she loved to entertain friends and family, and an extra guest for lunch was always welcome. Kathryn was famous for her seafood gumbo, spaghetti and pimiento cheese. Kathryn was a member of the Daniel Witcher Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Hope Sunday School class of First Baptist Church. Kathryn adored her family. After their beloved daughter, Kathy, died from complications of Diabetes in 1979, Kathy's daughter, Deborah, came to live with Tom and Kathryn. After Tom died in 1982, Deborah continued to live with Kathryn. She adored Deborah, who was like a daughter to her. Her grandsons, Jason, Michael and Daniel Schofield loved to listen to 'Mimi's' stories about the times during WWII. When they were young, she loved to read to them and take them to the park to play. While they were still young, Mimi taught them to play poker, because, she said, 'I don't want anyone taking advantage of them when they go off to college.' She was very proud of her son, Tommy, with whom she shared a very close relationship. Whatever happened, she always knew that Tommy would take care of her. He was a constant source of support to her, as she was to him. Kathryn was like a mother to her daughter- in -law, Brenda. She always said, 'I don't like to call her my daughter-in-law, I like to call her my daughter.' In her later years, she continued to enjoy her grandchildren, and was blessed with three great-grandsons. The family extends a special thanks to Dr. Peter Bidwell and Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital staff for the extraordinary compassion, kindness and excellent standard of care that they extended to Kathryn.
