Verlene 'Willie' Griffin, age 84, of Jasper, died July 22, 2010 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont. Memorial Services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Jasper on Saturday, July 24, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. Visitation will be at 3:00 p.m. until time of service. A native of San Augustine, she moved from Houston to Jasper in 1984. She worked at the Jasper County Historical Museum, loved art and was a supporter of East Texas Art League. She is survived by her children, Kenneth Weatherford of Beaumont; Mike Griffin, III of Fort Worth, David Griffin of Palestine, Jeff Griffin of Beaumont, Jim Griffin of Round Rock and Pam Hill of Silsbee. Sister, Maude Wright of Jasper, Twelve Grandchildren and Six great-grandchildren. Also by her beloved dog, "Teddy".
Doris "Midge" Medberry
1923 - 2010
Doris Doris Medberry, 87, of Brookeland, TX, died at Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital on Sunday, July 25, 2010. Funeral services are pending at Forest Oaks Funeral Home and Crematory. A native of Minneapolis, MN, she was a longtime resident of Los Angeles, CA, and manager of the El Dorado Bowling facility before moving to Brookeland, TX, 4 years ago. Survivors include daughters, Penny and husband, Sam Koser of Bowhead City, AZ; Bobbie and husband, Vernon Barrow of Brookeland, TX; Linda and husband, Steven Baladis of Thousand Oaks, CA.
William Cogbill

William Cogbill, 80, of Jasper, died at his home on Monday, July 26, 2010. Visitation will be at Forest Oaks Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, 29, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Forest Oaks Chapel with interment to follow at the Allen Cemetery. William was born June 30, 1930 in Beaumont. He was reared in the Beech Grove Community and graduated from Jasper High School in 1947. He retired from Tennessee Gas Pipeline and was a member of the DeWitt Clinton Masonic Lodge #29 also the Jasper Order of the Eastern Star #291. He was an active member of the Curtis Methodist Church. Survivors include wife, Vivian, daughters, Nancy Slaydon and Mary Wilson, all of Jasper, son, Clinton Smith and wife, Brenda of Leesville, LA; stepchildren, Walter Wigley and wife, Cathy of Houston, Jean Thornton and husband, Donald of Lufkin, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, sisters, Barbara Roberts and Beverly Sunday both of Jasper.
Jesse Oland Burleson
1920 - 2010
Command Sergeant Major Jesse Oland Burleson, 90, of Jasper, TX, went to be with the Lord on August 4, 2010. He was born in Willis, TX, on April 11, 1920, the son of Seth Oland Burleson and Lola Erheart Burleson. He was a 32-deg. Mason, a 50 year member of the Dewit Clinton Lodge #29 and the Jasper Eastern Star #291, as well as the Shriners and several other Masonic bodies, being presented with the Golden Trowel Award for outstanding service to his local lodge. Jesse served in combat in the US Army in Japan and Korea, served in the 1st Infantry Div., the 24th Infantry Div., 1st, 2nd and 3rd Armored Divisions, serving 16 years overseas. He taught at the Finance & Accounting School for six years in Indianapolis, IN, and served in other commands in Finance & Accounting offices during his 30 years of military service. He was predeceased by Mary Hill Burleson, his wife of 48 years, and Lorraine Simbro Burleson, his wife of 15 years, by brothers John and Clark and sisters Sethene and Helen. Survivors include four sons, Vaughn, Wade, Donald and Robert, a daughter, Marilyn and his brother, Wade E. Burleson, a 33 degree Mason Inspector General. During his military career, he received numerous medals and awards, including the Bronze Star and 3 Presidential Distinguished Unit Citations, as well as 17 other Victory, Defense, Service and Campaign Medals. Following cremation, his remains will be interred in the Houston National Cemetery beside his two wives, who preceded him in death. Private services will be held August 17, 2010 at the Houston National Cemetery. Gary Nelson Watson
Born February 13, 1953
From the loving arms of his family and friends, Gary Nelson Watson entered into eternal rest on August 12, 2010 at 7pm at the age of 57 years and 6 months at Saint Elizabeth Hospital, Beaumont, TX. Gary is survived by his loving wife, Diana Kay Watson (Rice) of 39 years, three sons; Gary Howard Watson & wife, Laura of Jasper, Travis Gene Watson of Trinidad & Tobago and Mathew Tyler Watson & wife, Lindsey of Nacogdoches, Brother Dale Ray Watson and Sister, Sharon Watson Lakey also two grandchildren, Lydia Claire Watson and Tucker Harrison Watson.
Funeral services will be Saturday, August 21, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in Forest Oaks Chapel. Family will greet the public from 1:30 until the time of service. There will be no graveside service. Gary's request was to be cremated and his remains left to his wife, Diana so they could always be together even in passing. Gary also requested his remains be buried with his wife when she enters her eternal rest.
Gary was remembered most for his many years, serving the public in several retail stores like Weingartens, Dues Minimax, Brookshire Brothers, HEB and Wal-Mart. However, Gary held many positions throughout his career. He was also a distributor for Mrs. Baird's bread. During his career he met many people and influenced several as well. In the later years of his life, he became an independent distributor for Sunbeam bread and Mission Foods here in the Jasper area. This gave him more freedom to tinker in his workshop, where he always had several projects. In his final years, he sold mobile homes, worked in a plant in Beaumont, and finally in the prison in Newton as a correctional officer. Gary's hobbies were collecting tools, knives and guns as well as spending time with his dogs.
Gary will be missed by his loving family and friends who will always remember this big man with an even bigger heart.

Ken Toomer, 63, of Mill Creek Acres, died at Lufkin Memorial Hospital Saturday August 21, 2010. Private services were held on Tuesday, August 24, 2010. A native of Weatherford, TX, Ken was employed with General Electric until retiring and moving from Marshall, TX, to Brookeland in 2004. Survivors include his wife, Fannie Toomer of Brookeland, TX; sons, John & wife, Jessica Toomer of Kilgore, TX, and Jason Toomer of Longview, TX.

Laverne R. Bennett, 86, of Jasper, died at her home Saturday August 21, 2010. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday August 26, 2010 in Gainesville, TX. at the Clement-Keel Chapel with interment to follow at the Fairview Cemetery in Gainesville. Visitation will be on Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00p.m. at Clement-Keel Chapel. A native of Henrietta, TX. she moved to Jasper in 2010. Survivors include a husband, Jimmy Bennett of Jasper, TX. Daughters, Elizabeth Berands of McKinney, TX, and Kathy Hebert of Jasper, TX. Brother, Duward Richardson of Gainesville, TX. a Sister, Dorothy Noe of Midland, TX; Eight Grandchildren and Two great-grandchildren.
