Perhaps you’ve noticed that the world feels just a little less colorful this week. You can’t put your finger on the cause - it’s not the inconsistent weather, or the flu that seems to be going around, and it’s not even Texas sports. For those who knew her, it’s quite obvious. It’s the departure this past Saturday evening of Geraldine King Hines from this world.
Jerri, as she was fondly known, was born in Wiergate on August 28, 1934, and lived in Newton County her whole life. After graduating from Newton High School in 1951, she worked in various positions at First National Bank for over 30 years, where she retired as Vice President. She also served as Newton County Tax Assessor for one term in the late 1980s. But there was so much more to Jerri than even her impressive career in finance.
Jerri was a wonderful mother-in-law, a woman with beautiful sparkling eyes, an easy laugh, and a Deep East Texas accent which was most certainly the strongest in four counties. Dessert was her very favorite of all the food groups, and she made tea so sweet that her grandchildren are now unable to tolerate anything less. She loved birds, flowers, antiquing (peddlin’ junk) and she collected hobnail glass and Hull pottery. Amidst all these things, Jerri was perhaps best known for her astounding gift for music.
For over two decades, Jerri has served as a pianist and music director, accompanying her pastor husband Dr. Clint Hines at several churches on both sides of the Sabine River. Her musical gift was most certainly granted by her Creator, but her lifelong work ethic and dedication helped these abilities to flourish. Beginning as a small child, she taught herself to play piano. She saved the $40 it would cost to buy her own piano, and she kept that piano to this day. Over the decades of her youth, she spent hours each week blistering the key with the Southern Gospel she so loved and when that wasn’t enough, she taught herself to play the organ and the accordion.
In the 1940s Jerri brought her vocal gifts to the award-winning Buna Quartet and Jasper County Quartet, both of which were featured regularly on the area’s Saturday morning radio. She had the honor of being selected a finalist at The Louisiana Hayride, but she insisted on singing her beloved Southern Gospel and she lost grand prize to a male country crooner by the name of George Jones. Her passion for music and her accomplishments and serve leave a legacy of encouragement for all young people with musical aspirations.
The only thing Jerri loved more than music was her family. Feeling her absence today are two daughters and three sons and their spouses, seven grandsons and five granddaughters and their spouses, and ten great-grandchildren. She and her husband Clint have been nearly inseparable for over two decades, pastoring together, gardening together, and cooking together. Family photo books are filled with pictures of Jerri with a baby or two on her lap at all times, and one of her favorite past-times has always been to clean out the baby clothing section at Dillard’s, especially of little girl clothes. Feathers, fur, hats and bows, pea coats and glitter and the color pink - Jerri could not get enough of these things, and she never tired of dressing the little girls in her life. “Hey, little doll!” was the greeting, followed by a tight hug, and lots of questions about the day at school or life in general. She always had a pitcher of that famous sweet tea made, and some sort of treat like cake or cookies.
So if the world seems dimmer to you today, please know that it’s probably due to the loss of this very bright lady. I am quite certain that Jerri is at this very moment playing and singing lively Gospel music on her Heavenly keyboard, that the walls and rugs of her mansion are done in shades of pink, and that just next door there is a Dillard’s with an endless baby clothing department.
