Joseph Paul Smith
Joseph Paul Smith of Marshall went to be with the Lord on September 23, 2017. J. Paul is survived by his wonderful wife of 67 years, Mary Ann and children, Paula Skipworth of Marshall, Philip Smith of Harleton, Angela Hudson of Bryant Arkansas, Keith Smith of Harleton and Chris Smith of College Station. He was preceded in death by his son Calvin Smith of Marshall in 1992.
J. Paul was born in August of 1927 in the sawmill-town of Wiergate, Texas. The second son of Calvin and Rose Smith of Wiergate, he had an adventurous childhood with his older brother, Calvin Jr. and younger brother, Elwood and sister, Doris (Erwin). He sold popcorn and cokes at the local movie theater and to the soldiers, as they did training in the area during WWII. In 1944, he graduated from Burkeville High School and that fall, started at East Texas Baptist College in Marshall. In 1945, he entered the Army, where he served for 18 months in San Antonio, Texas. Upon exiting the Army (where he always had to eat whatever they gave him), he returned to ETBC to continue his studies. Tired of being poor, he left ETBC again to join a seismograph crew in South Texas. Once he had enough money to buy a second-hand 1941 Ford convertible, he returned to ETBC, where he met Mary Ann Hawkins, who was his little sister Doris’ suite mate. He chased her down and in 1950, they were married. He graduated from ETBC with a degree in Chemistry and a minor in Math in 1950. He then when to Stephen F. Austin University to pursue a Master’s in Education Administration. While there, he taught high school Math and Chemistry and coached high school basketball and their first daughter, Paula, was born. He graduated from SFA in 1952 and then, a friend recommended him for a job with ICI Americas (DARCO) in Marshall, where he would work for the next 29 years as a Chemical Engineer and Pilot Plant Supervisor. Upon returning to Marshall, they joined a new church in the area, Central Baptist Church, where they would be active members for the next 65 years. More children came -- Calvin, Philip, Angela, Keith and Chris. In 1961, they bought the house across West Burleson, from where they were renting, and Paul worked on it for a year before they could move in. When Calvin was old enough for Boy Scouts, he joined Troop 239 at First United Methodist Church, and Paul stepped up to help. He would continue to help as troop committee chairman for the next 29 years, years after his sons were through. He served one term as Marshall city commissioner. They worked with the local republican party for over 30 years.
Their house on West Burleson has always rung with laughter. With six kids, 13 grandkids and 12 great-grandkids, and an innumerable in-laws, friends and neighbors, it was often a circus. Paul presided over it all. His love for family was always apparent. From the amazing annual family vacations, first in tents then in a pop-up trailer where they learned to love each other and this country, to church mission trips where he was always available to drive or plan or work, he made a wonderful life for his family.
Paul was known by all as a man of integrity. He always spoke his mind but could be a bit blunt. He was an amazing Father, Grandfather and great-grandfather and will be missed tremendously.
Visitation with the family will be a Central Baptist Church in Marshall from 10-11am on Wednesday September 27th with a memorial service to follow from 11-12. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Central Baptist Church of Marshall.
