STROKE FATAL TO MRS. WHITE, 72, IN WINTERS
Death Occurs Shortly After Pioneer Woman Takes Downtown Walk; Rites Set Today
Winters, Sept. 29, 1933 - Mrs. H. C. White, resident of Winters, for 29 years, died at her home at 1 p.m. today, from an illness of only two hours duration.
She was 72 years old.
Mrs. White was found lying across her bed unconscious, shortly after she returned from a walk downtown.
The family physician, who was hurriedly summoned, said she was suffering from a cerebral hemorrhage.
She died without regaining consciousness.
Although of frail constitution, Mrs. White was an unusually active woman for her years.
For 10 years, since the death of her younger daughter, Mrs. Irene Wood, she had cared for three grandchildren, Mabel Clifford, C.W. and Jane Wood, who reside in her home.
Friends who met her on her last walk said she was apparently in good health and chatted with them cheerfully.
The funeral has been set for 3:30 p.m. Saturday from her home on Main Street.
Rev. L.W. Seymour, paster of the First Methodist Church, of which she was a member, will officiate.
He will be assisted by Rev. W.T. Hamor, First Baptist pastor, and Rev. J.W. Joiner, Presbyterian minister.
Burial will be made in the old cemetery on Main Street, beside the grave of her husband, who died 25 years ago.
Surviving Mrs. White are a daughter, Mrs. Will Pierce and a son, Frank White of Winters; five grandchildren, William Pierce of Dallas, and Roland Pierce of Winters; her step-mother, Mrs. Ben F. Jones of Tuscola; five brothers, Ben Jones of View, Rev. Arthur Jones of Vernon, Fred and Elmo Jones of Tuscola, and Matt Jones of Edes, Colorado; three sisters, Miss Mary Jones of Tuscola, Miss Belle Jones, a teacher in the Abilene High School, and Mrs. Guthrie Allen of Lamesa.
Mrs. Cynthia Auty Tanner (nee George)

Mrs. C.A. Tanner died at 1:30 after an illness of several months.
The funeral services took place this afternoon at the hotel, the burial being at Greenleaf cemetery.
For many months, she had been a patient sufferer, but she has now entered upon that peaceful rest that has no ending.
The deceased was the mother of Mrs. M.C. Smith of this city.
At the time of her death, Mrs. Smith was at her mother's bedside doing all in her power to aid the sufferer.
Miss Hermia Smith was in Goldthwaite, but drove through the country to Brownwood, to attend the funeral.
Friends of the family are pained to hear of the death of this good woman.
Mrs. J.W. Tippett Buried at Crews

Coleman, Aug. 4 - Mrs. J.W. Tippett, 79, who died Saturday, at her home in Crews, was buried at Midway Cemetery, Sunday afternoon.
The Rev. Morton officiated for funeral services at the Crews Methodist Church.
Survivors include her son, Clyde of McCamey, and two daughters, Mrs. J.T. Lee of Crews, and Mrs. L.U. Bufford of Pecos.
Pallbearers were Roy Lee, Tom Aley, Edmond Lee, Coy Baldwin, L.M. Larner, and Troy Lee.
J.E. Stevens Co. was in charge of arrangements.

Jessie B. Whitlow

Whitlow Rite Set Today in Winters
WINTERS - Jessie B. Whitlow, 60, died at his home here Friday at 12:15 p.m. after an illness of two years.
Services will be held today at 2:30 p.m. in First Baptist Church with burial in Lakeview Cemetery, directed by Spill Funeral Home.
Mr. Whitlow was born Feb. 19, 1905 in Oklahoma's Indian territory.
He moved with his parents to Kress, Texas, at the age of nine.
It was in Kress, that he started working for Kimbell Elevator and Mill Co., with which he served in managerial positions for 36 years.
From Kress he moved to Hereford, and from there to Winters, on Dec. 3, 1941.
In Winters, he was Kimbell's grain buyer and manager.
Mr. Whitlow was married to Willie Ruby Attaway on Nov. 1, 1930 in Sarah, Okla.
He was a Methodist and a member of Winters Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jerry B. and William Kay Whitlow, both of Winters; three sisters, Mrs. L.E. Stringer of Corpus Christi, Mrs. Carl Kemp of Dimmitt, and Mrs. Jim Drake of Springer, N.M.; two brothers, Homer Whitlow of Kraft, and Pete Whitlow of Happy; and four grandchildren.
Members of Winters Fire Department will be pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.
Cecil Wesley Wood (1 of 2)
Cecil Wesley Wood, 82, a resident of Flagstaff, and Scottsdale, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000.
Mr. Wood, a retired businessman, was born on Aug. 16, 1918, in Winters, Texas.
He was a former trustee of Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, and Golden Gate Seminary in San Francisco.
He was a lifelong member of the advisory council at the Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.
He was also an Arizona rancher and an avid outdoorsman.
He is survived by his wife, Fern Wood; daughter, Kristi Lawrence of Flagstaff; sons, Alvin Wood of Washington, and Mike Wood of Colorado; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 4 to 6 p.m. today, Nov. 12 at Green Acres in Phoenix.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, at the First Southern Baptist Church, 3100 W. Camelback Road in Phoenix.

Cecil W. Wood, of Scottsdale, died November 9, 2000 in Flagstaff, Arizona.
Cecil was born August 16, 1918 in Winters, Texas.
He moved to Phoenix, AZ, in 1939 and lived in Phoenix, and Scottsdale, until his death.
He had a long career in the sheet-metal business.
He worked for Goetti Brothers Sheet-Metal company from 1939 until 1946. .
In 1946, he bought half of the business and was vice-president until he and his partner sold the business in 1969, at that time, he retired.
During the time of their ownership, the company became the largest business of its kind in the world.
He was an outdoorsman, hunter & fisherman.
He was a member of the Cowboy Hall of Fame.
At one time, he owned and operated at the Four Winds Ranch in southern Arizona.
Cecil was a long-time member of First Southern Baptist Church of Phoenix, serving his Lord in many ways.
He was active in the Men's Ministry and Sunday School, past Chairman of Deacons, President of Brotherhood and served on the building committee and Pastor Search Committee.
He was a past trustee of Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, and a past trustee of Golden State Seminary in San Francisco, California.
At the time of his death, he was a life member of the Advisory Council of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary of Ft. Worth, Texas.
He is survived by his wife, Fern, of Scottsdale; sons, Alvin Wood of Brinnon, Washington, Mike Wood of Denver, Colorado; daughter, Kristi Lawrence of Flagstaff; granddaughters, La Nell Richard, Lisa Baker, Anne Shoffstall; grandsons, John Wood and Ryan Lawrence; great-grandsons, Chad Richard and Jason Richard and a host of friends.
Visitation will be from 4 pm to 6 pm on Sunday, November 12th at Green Acres Memorial Gardens, 401 N. Hayden Rd., in Scottsdale.
Memorial service will be at First Southern Baptist Church, 3100 W. Camelback Rd., in Phoenix, at 2 pm on Monday, November 13th.
