Loewenstein
PORT ARTHUR – Joseph Meyer Loewenstein, M.D., age 96, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007 in Midland, after a brief illness.
Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 12 at 11 a.m. at Grammier-Oberle Funeral Home in Port Arthur with burial following in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Groves.
Dr. Loewenstein was born in Houston on May 15, 1910 to Edward B. Loewenstein, a native of Rockdale, and Lena Kapner Loewenstein.
He was a graduate of San Jacinto High School in Houston and Rice University, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa during his junior year. He earned his M.D. degree in 1935 from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. After a year of internship at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston, he began the practice of medicine in Lovelady, as an old-fashioned country doctor, riding horseback to remote farmhouses to deliver babies by the light of oil lanterns.
On June 6, 1933, while still a medical student, he married Ethel Fallis. In 1938, they moved to Port Arthur where Dr. Loewenstein practiced medicine for more than 40 years. He was also active in the community, serving as president of the Port Arthur Rotary Club and as president of Port Arthur Little Theatre.
After his wife Ethel died in 1996, Dr. Loewenstein lived in their home in Groves until 2003, when he moved to Midland to be near his son.
Survivors include his son, Joseph E. Loewenstein, M.D. and daughter-in-law, Bitsy of Midland; son, Robert F. Loewenstein Ph.D. and daughter-in-law, Suzanne Bucher of Williams Bay, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Sarah F. Loewenstein and her husband Marc De Wachter of Atlanta, Georgia and Edward B. Loewenstein of Austin.
Courtney
Martha J. Courtney, 74, of Lexington for the past 6 years, formerly of Silsbee, died Saturday morning, Feb. 10, 2007 in the Scott and White Hospital in Temple. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 11 a.m. at the Lexington United Methodist Church with Rev. Linda O’Neal and Rev. Ron Liles officiating. Interment followed in the Burns Cemetery in Blue.
Mrs. Courtney, an educator and principal, was born Aug. 28, 1932 in Lufkin to Rudolph Childress and Mattie (Stone) Childress. She married A.E. “Buddy” Courtney on Nov. 23, 1955 in Lufkin.
She was a member of Lexington United Methodist Church, Lexington UMW, Lexington Lions Club, Lexington Chamber of Commerce Director. She was a former member of Economic Development Board (Silsbee) and Board of Directors of Silsbee Country Club.
Mrs. Courtney graduated from Lufkin High School in 1949. She received her masters of education from Stephen F. Austin. She was a middle school literature and typing teacher. She was also an Assistant Principal at Silsbee High School, and Kindergarten Principal at Robinson Elementary in Silsbee at her retirement.
She was preceded in death by her husband on Jan. 31, 2003; parents; sister, Yvonne Childress.
Survivors include son Alan Courtney and wife Lori of Keller; daughter, Cindy Jackson and husband Joe of Lexington; brother, Kenneth Childress and wife Ann of Lufkin; three grandchildren, Courtney Jackson of Lexington, Marcy Heine and husband John of Blue and Tammie Creek and husband Allen of Dime Box; three great-grandchildren, McKenzie Heine, Kayden Heine and Madison Creek; numerous nieces and nephews.
Jistel
CAMERON – Antonia Anderle Jistel, 90, of Austin and formerly of Cameron died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007 in an Austin hospital. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 16 at St. Monica’s Catholic Church with Rev. Chris Coleman officiating. Burial will follow in St. Monica’s Cemetery. Rosary will be recited Thursday at 8 p.m. at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home.
Mrs. Jistel, a homemaker, was born Feb. 24, 1916 to Albert and Mary (Reineke) Anderle. She married Richard Jistel on Oct. 12, 1937 and he preceded her in death in 1982. She was a member of the St. Monica’s Catholic Church where she served in the St. Monica’s Ladies Society. Also preceded her in death were a daughter, Rebecca; a sister, Clare Wimmer; and a brother, Walter Anderle.
Survivors include four sons, Martin Jistel and wife Patricia, Dennis Jistel and wife Sue Arthur Jistel and wife Sharon, and Joseph Jistel and wife Patty, all of Austin; seven grandchildren, Christopher, Chad, Sara, Jared, Aaron, Mark and Kelsey; a great-grandchild, Thomas.
Urban
CAMERON – James David (J.J.) Urban, Jr. 24, of Maysfield, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2007 at his hme. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. at Grace Church in Cameron with Rev. Glynn A. Cummings officiating. Burial followed in Little River Cemetery near Jones Prairie.
J.J., a bulldozer operator, was born May 7, 1982 in Temple to James David Urban and Lisa Frances Elmore.
Survivors include his parents, Lisa Condry of Jones Prairie and Jim Urban of Black Bridge Community; two grandmothers, Phyllis Elmore of Marlow and Lucille Urban of Black Bridge Community; two sisters, Donna Jo and Sherry Ann; step-brother, James; step-sister, Julie; nieces and nephews, Rhiann, Cade, Rusty and Jayme; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Matous
Ladis C. Matous, 75, of Rockdale for the past 39 years and formerly of Temple, died Monday evening, March 5, 2007 in the Richards Memorial Hospital in Rockdale. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, March 8, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cyclone with Father Walter Matus officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Cyclone.
Mr. Matous was born June 10, 1931 in Seaton to William and Henreitta (Cabla) Matous. He married Lera Mae Girndt on May 14, 1955 in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cyclone.
He worked for Texas Power and Light for 38 years before retiring. He served in the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Navy as a Second Class Petty Officer on the USS Kankakee. He was also a member of Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department, VFW Post No. 6525 and the Knights of Columbus No. 7014 in Rockdale.
Mr. Matous was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bill Matous; sister, Helen Sanderford.
Survivors include his wife, Lera Mae Matous of Rockdale; four sons, Wesley Matous and wife Karen of Temple, Wayne Matous of College Station, Wendell Matous of Rockdale and Warren Matous and wife Laura of Rockdale; two daughters, Carol Worley and husband Jason of Rockdale and Chery Moore and husband Geoffrey of Spring; three brothers, Frank Matous of Temple, Ed Matous of Temple and Gene Matous of Temple; two sisters, Henrietta Everett of Temple and Norma Alford of Temple; eight grandchildren, Jessica Matous and Jarod Matous of Austin, Jamie Matous of Round Rock, Kyle Matous and Allison Matous of Temple, Shayna Spencer Matous of College Station, Michael Gomez of Taylor and Makenlee Worley of Rockdale.

Powell
Lifelong Rockdale resident, Linda Gail Tindall Powell, 59, died Sunday, March 4, 2007 in the Richards Memorial Hospital in Rockdale. Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. March 7, at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale with Rev. Carl Hudson of Meadowbrook Baptist Church officiating.
Mrs. Powell, a homemaker, was born Dec. 26, 1947 in Cameron to Priestley and Alma (Crane) Tindall. She married Rick Powell on June 10, 1972 in Rockdale.
She was a graduate of Rockdale High School and also beauty school. She was a member of Meadowbrook Baptist Church in Rockdale. She loved her family and being Nenn to her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband, Rick Powell of Rockdale; two daughters, Heidi Powell of Austin and Kristi Paulsen and husband Aarron of Temple; brother, Brownie Tindall and wife Mary of Bryan; two sisters, Cindy Dupree and husband Henry of Rockdale and Jan Hughes and husband Glenn of Caldwell; three grandchildren, Olivia Grace Paulsen, Ethan Powell Paulsen and Peyton Eli Paulsen.

Watson
Lee Watson, 75, died Friday morning, March 2, 2007 in Richards Memorial Hospital in Rockdale. No services are planned.
Mr. Watson was born June 1, 1931 in Weirgate to Perry Archie Lee Watson and Gracie Gertrude (Rushing) Watson. He married Ruby Day.
He was a resident of Rockdale for the past six years and formerly of Granger.
Mr. Watson was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby Watson of Rockdale.
