B.J. Wilde
1916-2001
Service for B.J. Wilde, 85, of Decatur will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at Coker Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Jerry Miller will officiate. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery. Visitation was to be 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Wilde died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at home.
Born May 4, 1916, in Windthorst, he was retired from the warehouse at Wise Electric Co-op.
He married the late Mary Belle Fisher Jan. 12, 1946, in Wichita Falls. She preceded him in death April 1, 2001.
Wilde was a World War II Army veteran and a member of the First Baptist Church in Decatur.
Survivors are a son, Bill Wilde and his wife, Kerry, of Trinity; daughter, Holly Laird of Decatur; sister, Petronilla Muerer of Decatur; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Eula Mae Sanford
1910-2001
Service for Eula Mae Sanford, 90, of Decatur was to be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Coker Funeral Home Chapel. Doug Vaughn was to officiate. Burial was to follow at Bethel Cemetery.
Sanford died Monday, July 30, 2001, in Decatur.
Born Dec. 30, 1910, in Cooper, she was a medication aide at a nursing home. She married the late Gwane Sandford in Duncan, Okla. She was a member of the Bell Baptist Church in Decatur.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Nita Ducharme.
Survivors include five sons, Tony Pryor of Dallas, Odell Pryor and Charlie Pryor, both of Decatur, Joe Pryor of Fort Worth and Lewis Pryor of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one daughter, Jean Walke of Levelland; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Jackie ‘Bluegrass’ Don Bennett
1939-2001
Graveside service for Jackie “Bluegrass” Don Bennett, 61, of Bridgeport was Tuesday, July 31 at Oaklawn Cemetery. The Rev. Doyle Slimp officiated.
Bennett died July 29, 2001, at a Bridgeport nursing home.
Born August 29, 1939, in Duncan, Okla., Bennett was a truck driver for Bob Gentry Sand and Gravel. He was a Baptist.
He is survived by his wife, Noley Fay Bennett; three sons, Eric Bennett of Boyd, Cavin Riggs of Rhome and David Riggs of Paradise; three daughters, Rhonda Gober of Paradise, Annette Meadows of Boyd and Christy North of Decatur; a brother, Bill Bennett of Childress; two sisters, Janice Roland of Lake Brownwood and Jo Norvell of Decatur; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Luther Edward Leverett
1929-2001
Service for Luther Edward Leverett, 72, of Bridgeport will be Thursday, Aug. 2, at 10 a.m. at Hawkins Funeral Chapel. Rev. Joe Richardson will officiate. Burial will follow at West Bridgeport Cemetery.
Leverett died Sunday, July 29, 2001, in Decatur.
Born Jan. 10, 1929, in Electra, he was a retired truck driver for Martin Eagle Oil. He was also a Baptist.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Melva Leverett, in 1996 and a brother, J.C. Leverett.
He is survived by two sons, Jackie Leverett and wife Monica and Terry Leverett and wife Lockade; a daughter, Rhonda McKnight and husband Joe; two brothers, Junior Leverett and Freddie Leverett; two sisters, Pat Reeves and Jeanette Bevill; eight grandchildren, Toni, Amanda, Kelly, B.J., Shelley, Jeremy, Melissa and Kay Lynn and four great-grandchildren, Andrea, Ariel, Rheason and Kelan.
Pallbearers will be B.J. Leverett, Jeremy Leverett, Terry Leverett, Matt Jenkins, William O’Dell, Bubba Garner and Louis Martinez.

Arthur Martinez Sr.
1921-2001
Service for Arthur Martinez Sr., 79, of Bridgeport, was to be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, at St. Johns Catholic Church in Bridgeport. Father Gonzolo Morales was to officiate. Burial was to follow at Mexican Cemetery in Bridgeport.
Martinez died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at a Denton hospital.
Born Dec. 23, 1921, in Bridgeport, he retired from Acme Brick after 37 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of St. Johns Catholic Church in Bridgeport.
He and Molly Hernandez were married July 17, 1946, in Fort Worth.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Molly H. Martinez of Bridgeport; daughters, Virginia Burgin and husband, Don, of Bridgeport, Linda R. Martinez of Fort Worth and Julie Lamb and husband, Joel, of Bridgeport; son, Arthur Martinez Jr. of Bridgeport; grandchildren, Michael Burgin of Lafayette, La., Rachel Burgin of Bridgeport and John Lamb of Bridgeport; and brothers, Bruno Martinez and wife, Refugia “Cuca” and Pete Martinez and wife, Juanita, all of Fort Worth.

Franklin William ‘Pete’ Rosenburg
1903-2001
Graveside service for Franklin William “Pete” Rosenburg, 98, of Decatur was Tuesday, July 31 at Bethel Cemetery. The Rev. Don Spain officiated, assisted by Tim Wertz.
Pallbearers were Billy Joe Snider, Blake Sandford, Sonny Loyd, Wendell Cauthen, Weldon Cauthen and James Wood.
Rosenburg died Sunday, July 29, 2001, in a Decatur nursing home.
Born April 29, 1903, Rosenburg was a retired farmer and a member of Eagle Drive Baptist Church. He married Sadie Ruth Rowe on April 8, 1930, in Decatur.
He is the last of the W.W. and Nettie Rosenburg family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sadie Ruth Rowe; two sisters, Myrtle Loyd and Alice Kerr; two brothers, Carl and Thomas Rosenburg; a son, Evans Rosenburg and a daughter, Ruth Rosenburg.
He is survived by a sister-in-law, Bernice Rosenburg of Decatur and several nieces and nephews.

Joan Collier
1930-2001
Graveside service for Joan Collier, 71, formerly of Bridgeport, will be Sunday, July 29, at 1 p.m. at Kleberg Cemetery. Her nephew, Tom Ranft, will officiate.
Collier died Thursday, July 26, 2001.
Born Feb. 3, 1930, in Kleberg to Merritt Preston Smith and Mora Lena Stovall, she was the ninth of 10 children. She lived in Bridgeport before moving in 1995.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh “Bud” Collier; her parents and several siblings.
She is survived by her children, Lloyd Alvin Fields Jr., Carl Tildon Fields and Jo Denise Malone, all of the Garland area; five grandchildren, Cody Burris, Christian Walker, Matthew Fields, Amanda Fields and Cameron Malone; four siblings, Kathryn Ranft, Herman Smith, Lawrence Smith and Charles Smith and a host of nieces and nephews.

Mamie Lee Sowell
1911-2001
Service for Mamie Lee Sowell, 90, was to be Saturday, July 28, at 10 a.m. at Crosier-Pearson-Mayfield Funeral Home in Cleburne with burial to follow in Greenacres Memorial Park in Cleburne. The Rev. Robert Graham was to officiate.
Sowell died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, in Chico.
Born on April 9, 1911, to Sidney and Laura Clark at Honey Creek she married L.D. Sowell in 1932. Together they farmed in Erath and Hamilton counties for 25 years before moving to Cleburne in 1956 where they owned a laundry for many years. Sowell was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years. She was a longtime member of Field Street Baptist Church and served as a Sunday School teacher.
She is survived by two sons, Sidney and wife, Frances Sowell and Charles and wife, Barbara Sowell; grandchildren, Terry Sowell and wife, Debbie, Danny Sowell and wife, Judy, David Lunt and Amy Lunt; great-grandchildren, Erica Sowell, Kara Sowell, Jake Sowell, Kacy Sowell, Clayton Sowell, Deanna Sowell, Trenton Sowell, Damion Sowell and Braden Sowell and numerous nieces and nephews.

Marjorie Doris Brown
1918-2001
Service for Marjorie Doris Brown, 83, of Decatur, was to be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Decatur. Burial was to follow at Oaklawn Cemetery. The Rev. Rusty Hedges was to officiate.
Brown died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, in a Dallas hospital.
Born May 18, 1918, in Turnersville, Brown was a homemaker. She married the late Lawrence M. Brown on March 29, 1941, in Denton. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Decatur.
Survivors include a son, Lawrence Brown Jr. of Plano; a daughter, Judy Smith of Decatur; a brother, Bob Buchanan of Decatur; four grandchildren, Shannon, Mark, Sean and Matt; and a great-grandchild, Courtney.

Paul Medlin
1910-2001
Graveside service for Paul Medlin, 91, of Runaway Bay was Tuesday, Oct. 23, at East Bridgeport Cemetery. The Rev. Alvin J. Brunn officiated.
Medlin died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, in Houston.
Born Oct. 2, 1910, in Bridgeport, he was a retired real estate appraiser for Texaco.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrle Renshaw Medlin in 1986.
He is survived by two daughters, Medlina Medlin and Paulette Miller; four grandchildren, Paul, Melinda, Michelle and Kristina and five great grandchildren.

Bill Edgar
1924-2001
Graveside service for Bill Edgar, 77, of Center was Tuesday, Oct. 23 at the Sunset Cemetery.
Edgar died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, in Center.
Born June 16, 1924 in Park Springs, Edgar was a sales executive with Center Broadcasting and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Center.
He is survived by his wife, Fleetia Edgar of Center; his sister-in-law, Olene Jackson of Center; several cousins, nephews and nieces.

Mary Ellen Burkett
1921-2001
Service for Mary Ellen Burkett, 80, of Boyd was Tuesday, Oct. 23 at the Second Baptist Church in Lamesa.
Burkett died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, in Decatur.
Born April 18, 1921, Burkett was a housewife. She married the late Billy Ben Burkett Jan. 18, 1952, in Roswell, N.M.
She is survived by three sons, Steve F. Parker of Abilene, Bob Burkett of Boyd and Charles L. Burkett of Brownfield; two daughters, Fran Standefer and Jan Burkett, both of Boyd; a brother, Buddy Foster of Lamesa; two sisters, Abena Lee of Lubbock and Louise Hightower of Midland; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Jesse Parish Reed
1922-2001
Service for Jesse Parish Reed, 78, of Decatur was Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. at Coker Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Gene Chamness officiated. Burial followed in Oaklawn Cemetery. Pallbearers were Johnny Hughes, Morris Berend, Ronnie Van Natta, Bo Bullard, Larry Self and Johnny Self.
Reed died on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2001, in Decatur.
Born on Oct. 26, 1922, Reed was a retired Federal Aviation Administration controller. He was a member of Oak Grove Methodist Church and served in the Army Air Corp.
He is survived by his wife, Lila Fay Self Reed of Decatur; a son, Col. Mike Reed of San Antonio; two daughters, Ginger Samay of Kansas City, Mo. and Ronda Fowler of Irving; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Billy Wayne ‘Killer’ Kirkland
1931-2001
Graveside service for Billy Wayne “Killer” Kirkland, 70, of Boyd was Tuesday, Oct. 23 at Boyd Cemetery. Dr. Nancy Cearley officiated.
Kirkland died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, in Decatur.
Born March 1, 1931, in Archer City, he married Freda Tillotson on Oct. 28, 1948, in Weatherford. He was a truck driver and a member of the Gospel Outreach Center in Azle and the Boyd Moose Lodge. He had lived in Boyd for 14 years.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Splown and Clara Endicott and his mother and father.
He is survived by his wife, Freda Kirkland of Boyd; three sons, Danny Kirkland and wife Paulette, David Kirkland and friend Patricia and Darly Kirkland, all of Boyd; three daughters, Donna Stephenson and husband Lanny of Gig Harbor, Wash., Diana Wilkinson of Boyd and Debby McDonald and husband Scott of Springtown; a brother, Tommy Kirkland and wife Kay of Decatur; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

J.O. Hopkins

Graveside service for J.O. Hopkins, 76, of Sanger will be Monday, Oct. 22, at Slidell Cemetery.
Dr. E.L. McNeal will officiate.
Hopkins died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, in Denton.
Born Aug. 11, 1925, in Krum, he was a self-employed wood worker and a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his daughter, Rajena Gayle Gayford of Iola; a sister, Liela Fay Brewer of Meridian, Miss. and two grandchildren.

Hazel Lucille Whitney
1912-2001
Graveside service for Hazel Lucille Whitney, 89, of Tolar was Friday, Oct. 19, at Paradise Cemetery. The Rev. Joe Motsenbocker officiated.
Whitney died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, in Granbury.
Born June 21, 1912, in Post Oak, she was a homemaker. She married the late Charlie A. Coker who preceded her in death May 28, 1985. She later married the late Raymond Whitney. She was a Baptist.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Orville and Sandra Coker of Tolar; a daughter and son-in-law, Charlene and Billie Tyson of Overland Park, Kan.; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Ronnie, Ricky and Tony Dewayne, Kent and Keith Coker and Boyce Cotton.

Jewel Frances Robert Mote
1913-2001
Service for Jewel Frances Roberts Mote, 88, of Greenwood will be Sunday, Oct. 21, at 2:30 p.m. at Greenwood Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
Mote died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, in Decatur.
Born July 5, 1913, in Chatfield to Nim Rod and Katie Evans Roberts, she attended school at Brumelow where she met her childhood sweetheart, Robert Mote.
They were married on Dec. 6, 1931, at Spring Mound Baptist Church at Rush Creek. They lived on their farm for 60 years where they raised their family, bred Jersey cows and grew gardens.
Mote raised and showed Bantams, was a 4-H Club leader for more than 30 years, was a member of the Home Extension club for more than 50 years and was poultry chairman at the Wise County Youth Fair for many years. She was inducted into the Texas Poultry Hall of Fame at Texas A&M University.
She was a member of the Greenwood Baptist Church, Eastern Star and the Wise County Historical Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1996.
She is survived by three sons, W. Robert Mote and Rodney and wife Ila, all of Greenwood and Felix Mote and wife Monica of Tulia; five grandchildren, Elaine Taylor and Robert, David, Felice and Chad Mote; great-grandchildren, Andy, Barry, Morgan and Tanner; two great-great-grandchildren, Madison and Matthew; three sisters, Clois Howard and Bobbie Ashley of Greenwood and Nemmie Garrett of Alvord; and a brother, Ray Roberts of Groveton.
Memorials may be made to the Wise County Historical Society.
