Morris G. Berry, 69

Services were held yesterday for Morris G. Berry of Commerce who died at home Wednesday. David Gibson officiated at the 10 a.m. service, arranged by Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home, at the Commerce Church of Christ. Interment followed at Rosemound Cemetery. Pallbearers were Lewis Jackson, Joe Combs, Leon Walden, Joe Davis, Junior Steen and Wade Lindsey. Honorary pallbearers were Wiley Cooper, Julian Harvey, Bill Webb, Don Pope Joe Beavers, Mike Brantley, Don Smith and Lynn Brantley. Berry was a master carpenter by trade, but a farmer and gardener by heart. Born in Hunt County, west of Commerce, on Oct. 30, 1929, to Charlie and Willie Treadwell Berry, he then married Betty Brown in Commerce on Sept. 3, 1959, and started his family. Berry was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was also a member of the Church of Christ of Commerce. Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Betty Brown Berry; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Suzanne Doudney of Rowlett; daughter-in-law, Nancy Doudney of Rockwall; daughter and son-in-law, Marcy and Danny McCroskey of Greenville; grandchildren: Jason, Justin and Ashley Doudney of Rowlett; Nathan, Melody and Ryan Doudney; Macy and Danielle McCroskey of Greenville; mother, Willie Berry of Commerce; sister and brother-in-law, Charlene and Jay Oehlke of Garland; and 24 nieces and nephews. Berry was preceded in death by his son, Stephen Lee Doudney; father, Charlie Berry; sister, Curtis Cagle; and brother, James Berry.
Dr. Paul G. McCoy, Jr., 74

Dr. Paul G. McCoy, Jr. died Tuesday at Presbyterian Hospital of Greenville. Memorial services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Peters Funeral Home. Visitation with the family followed the service. Interment was at the National Cemetery in Dallas. Born in West Lafayette, Ind. on July 27, 1925, the son of Paul McCoy and Lovella Swafford McCoy. On July 16, 1951, he married Edna J. Riddle who preceded him in death in 1982. As a veteran, LTC McCoy, USA (retired) saw combat during WWII and the Korean War. His awards include the Combat Infantry Badge, a Purple Heart with cluster, and was twice awarded the Bronze Star with devices. Following military retirement in 1968, he received his doctorate degree and accepted a position as Assistant Professor with East Texas State University. Later he received the status as professor prior to retirement from the education system in 1992. Dr. McCoy was a Master Mason, a member of DAV and the Nation Political Science Honor Society Pi Sigma Alpha. He was also the principal individual for organizing the Northeast Chapter of the Retired Officers Association. He is survived by his wife Barbara McCoy; a son, Paul G. McCoy III of Pomfret Center, Conn.; daughters Robin Gail Brooks of Portland, Ore. and Cheryl Edna McCoy of Seattle, Wash.; step-son, Kenneth B. Miller of Commerce; three grandchildren, Barbara McCoy, Elliot Paul Brooks and Kati Miller; a sister, Cheryl Waigand of Elloville, Ga. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the individual's preferred charity.
Ludia K. Backus, 93

Ludia K. Backus passed away on Monday, Sept. 6, at the Presbyterian Hospital of Greenville. Ludia Louise Frances Kerby was born on June 2, 1906, in the Bethlehem Community to John Ed and Cora Ann Elena Rollins Kerby. She married Percy Dewel Backus on Jan. 6, 1927, in Odell, Texas. He preceded her in death in 1972. Backus taught school from 1926 to 1966. Her first assignment was at Odell High School, then other schools in Hunt County and Collin County. Her final school home was Campbell ISD from 1945 to 1966. Backus had master's degrees is math, English and science from East Texas State Teachers College and East Texas State University. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Campbell. A gracious lady who led a fruitful life and influenced the lives of many children in public school and Sunday school, her faith and humor endured throughout her life and she maintained her dignity up to her date of death. Backus is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Louise and Wayne Foote of Campbell; sons and daughters-in-law, Kerby and Hortensia Backus of Austin, Wayne and Margie Backus of Rockwall and Mason and Nelda Backus of San Angelo, and son, Thomas Backus of Dallas. She is also survived by her grandchildren Linda Foote Dawson, Martha Foote Parrish, John Foote, Carol Foote Harrison, Leslie Backus Killgore, Brenda Backus Parsell, Kenneth Backus, Kay Ann Backus, Clarinda Backus Johnson, Darren Backus, Andy, Steve, David and Alex Backus, Carla Backus Hirt, Keli Backus Pearce and Joel Backus. In addition, she is survived by 24 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, Henry Backus in 1993, and two sisters and five brothers. Services were held Wednesday at the Peters Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Benny Chaffin and Rev. Cary Kinnaird officiating. Grandsons served as pallbearers. Interment followed at Memoryland Memorial Park.
Annie Boldt Rivers, 103

Annie Boldt Rivers, a Commerce resident, formerly of Dallas, died Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, at Presbyterian Hospital of Commerce. Services are today, at 2 p.m., at Jones Memorial Chapel, Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home. Dr. Bobby Tollison and Rev. Mike House will officiate. Interment will be at Rosemound Cemetery in Commerce.
Rivers, a floral designer, worked at the Flower Mart in Dallas for over 50 years. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Commerce. She was born to Wilhelm Boldt and Marie Riedesel Boldt on February 5, 1896 in Cuero, Texas.
Survivors include grandson Dick Walker of Commerce, great-grandsons Michael (PeeWee) Walker of Mabank and Douglas Hickson of Carrollton; great-great-granddaughter Marissa Walker of Mabank; and caretaker and friend Rogene MCrummen.
Pallbearers will be co-workers at Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home.
Visitation continues today from 12 noon to 2 p.m.
Herbert (Herb) William Rose, 82

Services were held Thursday, Sept. 2 for Herbert (Herb) William Rose of Commerce. Rose died August 30 at Presbyterian Hospital of Commerce. The services were at Jones Memorial Chapel, Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home, and followed by cremation. Dr. Bobby Tollison officiated at the services.
Rose was born on June 30, 1917, in Castana, Iowa to Ernest Rose and Deneig Dickson Rose. He was married on Nov. 25, 1945 in Jackson, Minnesota to Rose Anderson. He was retired from Supreme Beef.
Survivors include his wife Rose Rose of Commerce; sons and daughters-in law David and Judie Rose of Buffalo, Minn., Randy and Susan Rose of Austin, and Ronald and Dena Anderson of Washington; seven (7) grandchildren; three (3) great-grandchildren; and his sister Helen Gadbois of Moore, Okla. He was preceeded in death by his parents, brother Enos Rose, and sister Nellie Mae Barlow.
Billy Wayne Parker, 58

Billy Wayne Parker of Commerce died Tuesday, Aug. 31 at Hopkins County Memorial Hospital. Services were on Thursday, at 2 p.m. at Jones Memorial Chapel, Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home. Burial was at Ridgeway Cemetery in Hopkins County. Rev. Roy Lee Dittmar officiated.
Parker, self employed painter, was born in Ridgeway, Texas, on May 6, 1941 to Robert W. and Thelma Morgan Parker.
Survivors include his mother Thelma Parker of Ridgeway and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceeded in death by his father Robert W. Parker on Nov. 1, 1997.
Honorary pallbearers included Benny Parker, Bobby Parker, and Gene Williams.
Juanita Porter, 89

Funeral services for Juanita Porter of Commerce are today at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church. Rev. Mike House will officiate at the services arranged by Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Rosemound Cemetery. Porter was born on Feb. 5, 1910, in Commerce to Mitchell Thomas and Martha M. Poe Moody. She then married Aubrey Lee Porter on April 14, 1928, in Commerce. A retired seamstress, Porter worked at Howard Wolfe in Greenville. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. Survivors include her daughter, Mattie Hickman of Lake Fork, Texas; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; son, Mitchell Thomas Porter; two brothers; and three sisters.
George Rankin Raynes, 84 -Services for George Rankin Raynes of Commerce are today at 11:30 a.m. at Jones Memorial Chapel. Raynes died Monday at North Central Medical Center in McKinney. Rev. Mike House will officiate at the service planned by Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home. Burial follows at Sonora Cemetery in Fairlie. Pallbearers will be members of the International Order of Odd Fellows: Harold Horn, Second McQuery, Marion White, James Teel, Phill Anderson and James Hulen. Born in Fairlie on March 22, 1915, to William Franklin and Daisy Jackson Raynes. He married Christine Douglas in 1940 in Commerce. Raynes attended Fairlie High School, as well as East Texas State Teachers College, now Texas A& University-Commerce. Raynes played varsity basketball at ETSTC. He was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows and First United Methodist Church. Raynes farmed for many years at Fairlie and managed cotton gin operations in the Commerce area. He was elected and served as public weigher for Hunt County. Survivors include his wife, Christine Raynes of Commerce; son George Douglas Raynes and his wife, Judy, of Sherman; daughter, Christie Armentrout and her husband, Mark, of McKinney; sister, Eva Mae Turner of Longview; grandchildren, Doug Raynes, Jennifer Raynes, Alyssa Armentrout and Nathan Armentrout. Rankin was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Eugene T. Raynes, Robert E. Lee Raynes, Earl E. Raynes, Lester F. Raynes and Oather E. Raynes; and sisters, Willie E. Raynes and Elsie L. Gossett. Herbert W. Rose, 82 -Herbert W. Rose of Commerce died Monday at Presbyterian Hospital in Commerce. Services are planned for tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Jones Memorial Chapel. Rev. Bobby Tollison will officiate at the service with cremation to follow. Visitation is tomorrow from 10-11 a.m. at Jones-Walker &Son Funeral Home. Emma Wilson Cross, 101

Funeral services for Emma Wilson of Commerce were held yesterday at Jones Memorial Chapel. Burial followed in Rosemound Cemetery. Jones- Walker & Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Cross died Oct. 16, at Carriage House Manor in Sulphur Springs. She was born Sept. 12, 1900, near Timpson, Texas, the daughter of Robert aLee and Talitha Griffith Wilson. She attended school at Clarendon Junior College and West Texas State and worked as a teacher. She was very active in the Methodist Church as a member and Sunday School teacher. She enjoyed traveling and outdoor activities, especially fishing. She married Henry W. Cross on Sept. 28, 1930, in Clovis, N.M. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Ben and Jo Anne Cross of Wolfe City; three granddaughters and their husbands, Carol and John Wise of Lucas, Texas, Jeanne Cross and Michael Baxley of Dallas, and Cheryl and Curtis Oliver of Tempe, Ariz.; two great-grandchildren, Ben Wise and Madeline Wise of Lucas, Texas; and many nieces and nephews. Cross was also preceded in death by one son, Don Cross.

Joyce Dale South, 71

Funeral services for Joyce Dale South of Commerce were held yesterday at First Baptist Church, with Rev. Johnnie Henderson officiating. Burial followed in Klondike Cemetery. Pemberton Funeral Home was in charge of services.
Born Aug. 2, 1930, in Klondike, she was the daughter of James W. And Gracie Mae Bowman Chancellor. She graduated from high school in 1947. South had been employed by Klondike Cotton Gin, Dallas Independent School District, J.C. Penney, Dallas East Printing, Stewart Office Supply and South Service Company in Dallas. She moved to Commerce from Dallas in 1998 and as a member of First Baptist Church of Commerce.
Survivors include her husband, Nolan South of Commerce; father, James W. Chancellor of Commerce; daughter and son-in-law, Milda and Del Hadaway of Huntley, Ill.; sons and daughters-in-law, Les and Cindy South of Kaufman and Jay and Paula South of Mesquite; two sisters, Virginia Chancellor of Frisco and Iris Moore of Dallas; six grandchildren and fivegreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother, a sister and a brother.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund of Commerce.
Hazel A. Thomas, 76

Hazel A. Thomas of Commerce died Oct. 12 at Presbyterian Hospital of Commerce. Funeral services were held yesterday at Coker-Mathews Chapel. Rev. Mark Chadwick officiated, with burial in Grove Hill Cemetery in Dallas.
Thomas was born Aug. 3, 1925, in Sachse, Texas, the daughter of Fred Sinclair and Faye House Poynter. She married Lamond Thomas in Rockwall, Texas, Sept. 5, 1942. She was a retired clerk from Hunt County and a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Quinlan.
Survivors include son, Larry Thomas of Galveston; daughters, Rebecca Thomas Seeley of Grand Prairie; daughter-in-law, Cindy Thomas of Rockwall; brothers, Radford Poynter of Berryville, Ark., Grady Poynter of Lindale, Texas, and Bobby Poynter of Montana; sisters, Zollie House of Harlingen, Texas, Juanita Henson of Dallas, and Norma Cagle of Austin; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lamond, on Nov. 11, 1989, and son, Harry Thomas, Feb. 26, 1997.
