Russell Moore, 85

Russell Moore of Campbell passed away Oct. 12 at Presbyterian Hospital of Greenville. Funeral services were held Oct. 13 at Prairie Valley Baptist Church, with Rev. Robert Baldridge officiating. Burial followed at Prairie Valley Cemetery, with Moore's nephews serving as pallbearers and A.L. Dooley, Ben Dooley and Robert Byrd serving as honorary pallbearers. Arrangements were under the direction of Cumby Funeral Home.
Born Nov. 27, 1915, in Flomont, to Ed and Ludie Dooley Moore, he married Nora Lou Bryant on Jan. 10, 1957, in Hunt County; she died in 1997. Moore was pastor emeritus at Prairie Valley Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Denise Grammar of Campbell; two sons, James Russell Moore and John Moore, both of Campbell; one sister, Ozella Jones of Greenville; four granddaughters, Stephanie Grammar, Bethany Grammar, April Moore and Ariel Moore; two grandsons, Adam Russell Moore and Kelsey Grammar. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Olene Chaffine, four brothers and two sisters.
Robert H. Comstock, 77

Robert H. Comstock of Commerce died Oct. 12 at his residence. Cremation with private memorial services will be held at a later date.
A veteran of World War II and employed as an appliance service technician, Comstock was born in Memphis, Tenn., on Sept. 23, 1924, the son of Herbert and Lucy Batisel Comstock.
Survivors include a daughter, Pamela DelaO of Houston; grandchildren, Jennifer Pickard of Commerce, Todd Porter of Houston and Joe Flores, Jr., of Houston; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Louie Price Gregg, 88

Louie Price Gregg of San Marcos, Texas, died recently. Born to James M. and Victoria Evelyn Smith Price, Jan. 1, 1913, in Perryville, Texas, she had attended public schools there and in Commerce.
In 1933, she graduated from East Texas State Teachers' College, now Texas A&M University-Commerce, with a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education. She then received a master's degree from Southwest Texas University of San Marcos, Texas. She taught school for many years in Hunt, Red River and Cherokee Counties, ending her teaching career in San Marcos where she taught for 30 years.
On Dec. 22, 1932, she married Cecil M. Gregg, who later became professor of Soil Science at Southwest Texas University. When Mr. Gregg attended Michigan State University where he earned a PhD, Louie taught in the elementary schools of East Lansing, Mich.
Louie and Cecil traveled extensively throughout the world, having visited every continent except Australia.
When Dr. Gregg was selected to go to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (to help establish a college of agriculture), she taught kindergarten and elementary to campus children. Louie joined the Baptist Church in Commerce at a very early age and served faithfully for many years. Throughout their careers and travels, Dr. And Mrs. Gregg worked as lay missionaries giving the message of Christ to others in other countries.
Gregg is survived by two sons, Cecil M. Gregg, Jr., and wife, Deborah, and daughter, Catherine, of San Antonio, Texas, and Dr. L.P. "Buddy" Gregg and wife, Patricia (Patti) and sons, Russ of Dallas and Guy of Raleigh, N.C.;grandchildren, Cecil Gregg III and wife, Alicia, and children of Houston, Meg Dunn and husband, Spencer, and five children of Houston, Gina Gregg and son, Douglas, of Houston, Hayden Gregg and wife, Charisse, of Victoria; sister, Paralee Price of Corpus Christi, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Hubert Leon Higginbotham, 74

Hubert Leon Higginbotham of Baytown, Texas, passed away Oct. 11. Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. at Missouri Street Church of Christ. Burial services will be at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Wolfe City, Texas, on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 2 p.m.
Higginbotham was born in Wolfe City on Sept. 5, 1927, and graduated from high school in Commerce in 1944. He began his college work at East Texas State Teachers College, now Texas A&M University-Commerce, in 1944.
His college training was interrupted soon after his 18th birthday. After the fall semester of 1945, he entered the United States Army in February, 1946. He was honorably discharged in August, 1947, after being on duty in California where he attained the rank of T/4.
Returning to Commerce, Higginbotham enrolled again in East Texas State University and received a B.S. degree with a major in business administration in January, 1950. He received a master's of education degree, also from ETSU, in January, 1952. He also did further graduate work at the University of Texas.
After teaching four years in Greenville, he left to begin his tenure at Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown in 1954. He taught at Lee until his retirement in 1985. Although he taught most of the courses in the Business Education Department from time to time, his main focus was accounting. He encouraged students to continue the study of accounting in college, and over the years many of these students expressed their appreciation to him for his dedication for helping them decide on an interesting career. When he retired, he had been serving as the Lee Business Education Department as chairman. He had also taught part-time at Lee College, and worked for the City of Baytown Parks and Recreation Department as Aquatic Supervisor during the summers for 18 years.
Higginbotham enjoyed traveling and had visited in most states of the continental United States and extensively in Mexico. He read extensively, enjoyed classical music, collected rare coins, enjoyed genealogy and restoring classic cars. A member of the Missouri Street Church of Christ,he attended regularly. He was also a life member of the Texas State Teachers Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert Lee Higginbotham and Ruby Florence Stephens Higginbotham; his sister, Marie Higginbotham Gardner, and her husband, Burl, and a nephew, Robin Lee Gardner, all of Commerce.
Survivors include his daughter, Tresa Kay Wyatt, and her husband, Rick, and a granddaughter, Jennifer Simkulet, all of Baytown; a grandson, Christopher A. Moore; sister-in-law, Wanda Gardner of Bonham; and cousins, Margaret L. Ellsberry and Dwight Neal Stephens of Dallas, and Roy Wayne Stephens of Longview.

Christopher Neal, 27

Christopher Neal of Cooper died Sept. 28 in Dallas. Funeral services were held for him at the United Methodist Church of Cooper on Oct. 4, with Rev. Gregg Neal officiating. Burial took place at Palestine Cemetery, Novice, Texas.
Born June 29, 1974, in Lamar County, Texas, his parents are Vera Tinnin Neal and the late Rev. Jessie Neal. He was a 1993 graduate of the Delta County School District and attended Our Place in Sulphur Springs and Paris, Texas.
Survivors include brothers, Standley and Anthony Neal of Cooper, Ricky, Barry and Keith Neal of Dallas, and Greg and Kenneth Neal of Commerce; sisters, Betty Neal of California, Reginia McKinney, Shekela Neal, Cassie Neal and Terrie Craddock of Dallas, and Nancyah Cummings of Florida. He was preceded in death by his father, Rev. Jessie Neal.

Estice V. Miller, 94

Estice V. Miller of Commerce died Oct. 5 at Christus St. Joseph's Hospital in Paris. Funeral services were held Monday at Jones Memorial Chapel with Rev. Joel Arnold officiating. Interment followed at Rosemound Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers for the services arranged by Jones- Walker & Son Funeral Home were Bob Harrell, Randy Jones, Bill Taylor, Bobby King, C.R. McPhearson and Jimmy Corley.
Miller was born on July 15, 1907, in Hunt County, Texas, the son of Eli Thomas and Maggie Payne Miller. On Dec. 18, 1928, he married Elsie McClure Dodd in Mahoney, Texas. Miller worked as a concrete pipe manufacturer and a farmer. He was of the Church of Christ faith and a member of the Commerce Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include sons, Eugene Estice Miller and his wife, Betty, of Commerce, and Eli Barto Miller of Commerce. Miller was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie, on June 6, 1989, his parents and two infant grandchildren.
Mattie Bell Dennis, 102

Mattie Bell Dennis of Balch Springs,formerly of Commerce, died Sept. 30 in Balch Springs Nursing Home. A graveside service was held Saturday, Oct. 6, at South Sulphur Cemetery.
Dennis was born Aug. 20, 1899, in Deport to John Floyd Allen and Cora Smith Allen. She married Tom Dennis in Paris, Texas, in 1953. She was a member of Newman Park Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Evelyn Fay Lane of Dallas, Novaline Putman of Virginia and Joyce Cozort of Kansas; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Billie Jean Ray and Kathryn Burnett; one son, Royce Fulfer; her husband and her parents.
Emma Oleta Fouse, 91

Emma Oleta Fouse of Ladonia died Thursday, Oct. 3, in Presbyterian Hospital in Commerce. Funeral services were Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Delta Funeral Chapel in Cooper with David Gibson of Commerce officiating. Interment was in Peerless Cemetery.
Fouse was born in Peerless on June 14, 1919. She was the daughter of Luke Cockrum and Effie Kilabrew Cockrum. She was a homemaker. She married Samuel Mathew Fouse in May 1934. He preceded her in death Jan. 21, 2000.
Survivors include a son, Ernie Fouse of Commerce; two daughters, Lynn Sutton of Pecan Gap and Mary Richardson of Ladonia; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-granchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ruby Nell Marsh, July 15, 2001, two sisters, a brother and a grandson.
Pallbearers were Brian Sutton, Justin Sutton, Ernie Sutton, Wayland Dickerson, Jarred Ferguson and Jody Todhunter.

Mattie Bell Dennis of Balch Springs, and formerly of Commerce, died Sunday. Graveside services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at South Sulphur Cemetery. No visitation is planned.
