Charles Kennedy

Charles Wayne Kennedy, 64, of Commerce died Monday in Cumby. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. today at Jones Memorial Chapel with Rev. Steve Youngblood officiating. Burial is in Shiloh Cemetery.
Mr. Kennedy was born Feb. 13, 1937, in Bogota; the son of Mark and Mamie Gibbs Kennedy. He married Karen Kennedy on May 30, 1958, in Paris, Texas.
Mr. Kennedy was the retired manager at Dub's Quick Stop.
Surviving are his wife of Commerce; his mother; children, Pam and Darrell Farris of Cumby; Kristie McSparrin of Commerce, Philip and Danna Kennedy of Commerce; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters, Lorene Weir of Muleshoe, Maxine McGill of Daingerfield, Ruth Ann Allen of Deport and one brother, Robert Kennedy of Cuthand.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Pallbearers are Jim White, Kerry Pannell, Shannon Moreland, Bobby Moreland, Buddy Ferrell and Tracy Brent.

Dr. Richard Clevenger

Dr. Richard Lee Clevenger, 70, died Wednesday at his home. A memorial service was Saturday at First Presbyterian Church of Commerce.
Dr. Clevenger was born May 16, 1931, in Columbus, Ind.; the son of Henry Franklin and Zona Faye Clevenger.
He attended Indiana University, but before finishing his degree, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force to serve from 1951-55 in the Korean Conflict. He returned to the university to complete his bachelor's degree in chemistry. He received his doctorate in chemistry from the University of Louisville in 1963.
Dr. Clevenger moved to Commerce in 1963 and became an associate professor of chemistry at East Texas State University through 1980.
During this time, he was active in law enforcement through his work in forensic chemistry. He worked in private business until resuming his teaching career in 1990. He continued to teach chemistry in Kansas and Jacksonville, Texas, until his retirement in 1996.
Dr. Clevenger was also a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America, where he was a Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster of local troops. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he was a Sunday School superintendent, deacon and choir member.
Surviving are his wife, Martha Hogensen Clevenger; son, Eric Clevenger; and niece, Rosanne Barnette.
He was preceded in death by two brothers in infancy; and a brother, David Lynn Clevenger.
Memorials may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphona Society or the First Presbyterian Church of Commerce.
Opal Shaw

Opal Hida Shaw, 91, of Commerce died Wednesday in Doctors Hospital in Dallas. Funeral services were Friday morning at Jones Memorial Chapel with Rev. Mike House officiating. Burial was in Rosemound Cemetery.
Mrs. Shaw was born Jan. 19, 1910, in Pecan Gap; the daughter of Andrew and Joyce Young Quate. She was married to Lee David Shaw on Jan. 26, 1929, in Cooper.
Mrs. Shaw is survived by four sons, Kenneth Shaw of Commerce, Curtis Shaw and Wendel Shaw, both of Dallas, and Benny Shaw of Arlington; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; brother, Jess Quate of Grand Prairie and two sisters, Vern Baker of Clyde and Arbena Weakley of Dallas.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Jerry Shaw; a daughter, Shirley Bankhead; and granddaughter, Marisa Bankhead.
Pallbearers were grandsons Kenny Shaw, Robert Shaw, Greg Shaw, Bradley Bankhead, Philip Bankhead and Chris Shaw.
Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
John Loewenthal

John R. Loewenthal, 46, of Austin died Sunday. Graveside services were Thursday morning at Beth Israel III Cemetery at Capital Memorial Park in Pflugerville.
Mr. Loewenthal received bachelors and masters degrees in business administration from the University of Texas.
Surviving are his mother, Ursula Loewenthal of Commerce; sisters, Jean Shabot of Houston and Kathy Goldenberg of Moorestown, N.J.; a niece and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Loewenthal.

Carl Lands

Carl Lands, 91, of Commerce died July 2. Services were July 4 at Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home Chapel.
Mr. Lands was born April 19, 1910, in Hunt County; the son of James and Polly Lands. He married Ruby Farler in July 6, 1933.
Mr. Lands was retired from the Cotton Belt Railroad and the Denton State School.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Commerce and was a Master Mason. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite of Dallas, Hella Temple of Garland and the Congregational Methodist Church of Commerce.
Surviving are special friend, Doreen Pratt of Klondike; Johnnie Miller of Lake Dallas who was reared by the Lands; and nieces and their husbands, Nona and Billy Guy Smith of Midland, Edwina and L.C. Threlkeld of Commerce, Joyce and Perry Johns of Fort Worth.
He was preceded in death by his wife; brother and sisters, Opal Davis, Nona Butler, Minnie Wells, Pearl Ryner and Dee Lands.Mary Sue Medcalf
Mary Sue Vandergriff Medcalf, 49, of Bonham died Monday in Northeast Medical Center in Bonham. Graveside services are at 11 a.m. Thursday at Gafford Chapel Cemetery with Fred Chapman officiating.
Mrs. Medcalf was born August 13, 1951, in Commerce; the daughter of Alfred P. "Red" and Opal Vandergriff.
She was married to Walter Medcalf.
Surviving are children, Kenneth Hollingsworth, Johnna Wilson, John Hollingsworth; step-daughters, Crystal Medcalf, Caryn Medcalf, Cheryl Medcalf and Cynthia Medcalf; mother; brothers, Carl Vandergriff and Jerry Vandergriff, both of Commerce and Bobby Vandergriff of Seaboard, Ore.; sister, Nancy Jean Trentham of Commerce; and nine grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Pallbearers are Glen Medcalf, Frank Mulder, Merle Hollingsworth, Stacey Vandergriff, Jamie Vandergriff and Danny McClure.
Visitation is from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.
Jimmie Lou Fults, 83

Jimmie Lou Fults of Commerce died Wednesday at Oak Manor Nursing Home. Services were held yesterday at 10 a.m. at Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Richard Deteau officiated and burial followed at Rosemound Cemetery.
Born Fe. 4, 1918, in Commerce, she was the daughter of John Wiley and Myrtle Lou Lankford Turner. She married George Raymond Fults on April 18, 1936, in Ladonia. Fults was a member of First Baptist Church and the Rebekah Lodge, both in Commerce.
She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Wiley and Diane Fults of Greenville and Bobby and Charlene Fults of Commerce; twin daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Travis Baxley of Cumby and Glenda and Bill Davenport of Santa Fe; sisters, Eva Lee Faulks of San Angelo, Gay Nell Findley of Bairoil, Wyo.; a brother, Cecil Turner of Casper, Wyo.; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Fults was preceded in death by her husband in 1998; brothers, Joe and Leon Turner; a sister, Prebble Gibson; and one great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers were Tony Fults, Kyle Fults, Josh Fults, Kyle Burns, Damon Burns and Randy Baxley.
William Douglas Lunceford, 74

Funeral services for William Douglas Lunceford of Cumby are planned for today at 2 p.m. at Jones-Walker Chapel. Rev. Bob Woodworth and Rev. Roy Lee Ditmar will officiate at the service arranged by Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Steven Byrd, Randy Jones, Elmer Miller, Thomas Patchen, Bobby Peaks, H.W. Tucker and Vick Flowers.
Lunceford owned and operated a Trading Post on Highway 11. He was born in Peerless on Nov. 30, 1926, the son of Jasper Kaufman and Velvia India Kincaid Lunceford. On July 30, 1948, he married Helen Horton in Commerce. A veteran of World War II, Lunceford was also a member of the Presbyterian Church of the Mt. Zion Community.
Survivors include his wife, Helen, of Cumby; daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley Lunceford Patchen and husband, Thomas, of Sulphur Springs, Kathy Lunceford Byrd and husband, Steven, of Mt. Vernon; son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Charlene Lunceford of Commerce; grandchildren, Becky and Christina Patchen, Corrie, Matthew and Jeremy Byrd, and Benjamin and Aaron Lunceford; brother, Jackie Lunceford of Commerce; and sisters, Treva Nell Beatles of Greenville, Joyce Camper of Commerce and Bonnie Vennote of Springtown, Texas. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Elvalee Nowlin; and twin daughters, Linda and Glenda Lunceford.
Ivy Sunshine Lee, 28

Ivy Sunshine Lee of Austin, formerly of Commerce, died June 30, doing what she lovedswimming and boating with friends on Lake Travis.
She is survived by her mother, Donna Lily Lee; aunts, Sharon and Andrea Lee; uncles, Bob and Adrian Lee; cousins, Katy, Lindsey and Ali, Sierra Jewel, Ryan and Kelly; many friends, family and loved ones. She will be missed dearly by all, especially by Kitters, Casey and Pearl.
Lee was preceded in death by her aunt, Carol Keirnan; grandparents, Bob and Alice Lee; grandmother, Nellie Haynes and her father, Thomas J. Haynes.
The family received visitors at Harrell Funeral Home in Austin yesterday, and funeral services followed at 7 p.m.
