James P. (Jake) Miller Jr., 91
July 4, 2001
James P. Miller Jr., fondly known as "Jake" by friends and family in Commerce, died Monday in Mesa, Arizona, where he had lived since his wife, Juadeen, died in 1999. Funeral services are scheduled for tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Pemberton Funeral Chapel, where visitation will take place from 12 noon until the time of the service. Rev. Mike House will officiate there and at the burial, which will follow at Forest Park Cemetery in Greenville.
Miller, the last of 10 children born to James Perry Miller Sr. and Fannie Wynn Miller, was born in Klondike on March 19, 1910. When Miller was five years old, the family moved to Commerce, where he attended Commerce schools and later graduated from Commerce High School in 1928. He moved to Arizona in December 1999 to be with longtime friends who would care for him until his death.
A World War II Navy veteran, Miller was on a troop transport where he served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Prior to and after WWII, Miller and his wife, Juadeen, owned and operated Miller's Grocery and Market. Being a man of foresight, Miller realized the days of the independent grocer were numbered. He closed the market and started custom farming and ranching. He was then able to combine his work with his love of horses, mules and wagons. Most fortunate were those animals that were in his care.
Miller should be remembered as a philanthropist who donated to both individuals and projects, such as the South Sulphur Regional Development Association and Commerce Independent Schools. He was a member of the Commerce Masonic Lodge #439. He was a member of the United Methodist Church.
His parents; his beloved wife, Juadeen Damron Miller, whom he was married to from Aug. 20, 1937, until her death in October, 1999; a son, James Talbert Miller, who died in infancy; four brothers and five sisters precede him in death.
Survivors include special friend, Donna Paulk; special friends, Ted and Debbie Paulk of Mesa, Az., and their sons, Jordan and Jacob Paulk; nephew, Jim Bradford of Lewiston, Idaho; great-nephew, Ben Laws Jr. of Flowermound; and his little dog, Hattie.
Pallbearers will be Mike Rainbolt; Jake Rainbolt; David Moody; Clifton Haddock; Jake Haddock; Marion Ainsworth; Richard Hill and Bruce Hineman. Honorary pallbearers will be Ben Laws Jr., Jordan Paulk, Jacob Paulk, Ted Paulk, Norman Messick and Preston Speight.
