Mamie Jones, 79

Mamie Ray Jones of Commerce died Sunday. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. today at Pemberton Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Brock Mitchell, Rev. James Hall and Rev. George McCants officiating. Burial follows in Rosemound Cemetery.
Jones was born July 6, 1921, in Hunt County, the daughter of San and Evia Cooper Jones. She was married to E.A. "Bud" Jones on Oct. 11, 1936, in Commerce.
Jones was a long-time Commerce resident. She was a seamstress for the Leighton Dress Manufacturing Company and a member of the Abundant Life Assembly Church, where she was a songleader and Sunday School teacher.
Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, Buddy and Sarah Jones of Commerce and Troy and Jackie Jones of Cooper; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Edwin Phelps of Commerce; brother, Raymond Cooper of Sulphur Springs; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband on May 1, 1980; one son, Terry Jones; two sisters and four brothers.
Pallbearers are Forrest Jones, Bradley Phelps, Joel Phelps, Daniel Jones, Danny Scruton and Arnold Parker. Honorary pallbearers are Jason Jones, Jeffery Jones and Sheely Taylor.
Lewis Williams, 63

Lewis Dixon Williams of Cumby died Thursday at Presbyterian Hospital of Greenville. Graveside services were yesterday afternoon at Ridgeway Cemetery with Van Simpson officiating.
Williams was born May 21, 1937, in Frankston, the son of Richard L. and Lela McCoy Williams. He married Joy Ann Neighbors on Jan. 25, 1957, in Dallas.
Surviving are his wife of Cumby; son, Lance Williams of Irving; daughters, Katherine Howard of Irving and Celinda Lopez and Stacey Bell, both of Fort Worth; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters and five brothers.
Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
James Melton, 50

James Earl Melton of Commerce died Sunday in Commerce. Funeral services were yesterday afternoon at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Ronnie Ross officiating. Graveside services are at 2 p.m. today at Benjamin Cemetery in Benjamin.
Melton was born Aug. 28, 1950, in Knox City, the son of Homer T. and Kathleen Sams Melton. He married Debra Melton on Feb. 14, 1990, in Altus, Okla. He had lived in Commerce for six years, having moved from Abilene.
He graduated from Benjamin High School in 1968 and received his bachelor's degree in wildlife management from Texas Tech University in 1972.
After graduation, he was employed with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. He was a park complex manager at Cooper Lake.
Melton was a member of the Sulphur Springs Leadership Class and past director of the Hopkins County Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Posey Baptist Church in Birthwright and served on the church board.
Surviving are his wife of Commerce; daughters, Kobi Melton of College Station and Jessica Rab of Commerce; sons, Jason Melton of Houston and David Abbott of Commerce; and sister, Mary Jane Young of Benjamin. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Pallbearers are James Harden, Wyman Meinzer, James Morton, Kenneth Parker, Andy Wright and Jackie Young, Jr. Pemberton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

William Crump, 53

Graveside services for William Crump of Commerce were held yesterday at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Wolfe City. Rev. March Richie officiated at the service arranged by R.W. Owens & Son Funeral Home. Crump died suddenly April 18 at Presbyterian Hospital in Commerce.
A retired carpenter and fork lift operator, Crump was born Feb. 13, 1948, in Ft. Mill, S.C., the son of William Randolph and Margaret Christine Hinson Crump. On Dec. 8, 1989, he married Lena Gail Lauderdale in Commerce. Crump was a veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Gail Crump of Commerce; three stepsons, Michael Ridings and Larry Ridings, both of Commerce, and Royce McClendon, Jr., of Commerce; two brothers, Larry Crump of Rockhill, S.C., and Kenneth Crump of Palmer, Alaska; his mother, Margaret Crump of Rockhill, S.C.; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father.
Jack Wallace Murray, 87

Jack Wallace Murray of Greenville died April 19 at Wesley House in Greenville. Born in San Antonio Jan. 17, 1914, Murray graduated from high school in Plain Dealing, La. His parents were James Murray and Agnes Ford Wallace, both deceased.
Before joining the United States Navy, Murray married Sarah Katherine Pickett Sept. 3, 1937, in Plain Dealing, La. He served during World War II and the Korean Conflict under the rank of Chief Radio Technician. He had worked in the electronics industry before military service. Murray worked for Texas Eastern Transmission in Shreveport, La., until his retirement in 1979, when he moved to Greenville to be near his relatives. He was a member of the Dunlap Presbyterian Church of Shreveport.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah Katherine Pickett Murray of Greenville; sons, Jack W. Murray II and his wife, Doris, of Allen, and George Stephen Murray of Greenville; grandson, Jack W. Murray III of Dallas; granddaughter, Katherine Murray Johnston of Lufkin; two great-grandchildren and several nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, James William Murray; and one half-sister, Mae Murray Mettinheimer.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Era Anders, 78

Era Vern Anders of Mesquite died Wednesday in Mesquite. Funeral services were Saturday morning at Pleasant Grove Christian Church with Rev. Kurt Johanson officiating. Burial was Saturday afternoon at Rosemound Cemetery in Commerce.
Anders was born April 26, 1922, in Commerce. She was a retired station manager for Trailway Bus Lines and was a member of Pleasant Grove Christian Church.
Surviving are a brother, W.B. "Dub" Anders, and nieces and nephews, Helen Lacina, Pat Beard, Norman Anders and Edward Anders.
Viola Curtis, 67

Viola Vivian Curtis of Commerce died April 8 at Presbyterian Hospital in Commerce. Graveside services were April 11 at Oak Ridge Cemetery near Ladonia with John Whittington officiating, at the service arranged by Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home.
Curtis was born May 28, 1933, in Cloudy, Okla., the daughter of Daniel Matthew and Elmira Elizabeth Rose Cooper. She was retired as a custodian at Texas A&M University-Commerce and was a Baptist.
Surviving are a daughter, Carla Adams of Commerce; sons, William Richardson of Wolfe City, Henry Richardson Jr. of Greenville, Norman Richardson of Commerce and Arnold Richardson of Telephone; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brothers, Daniel Cooper Jr. of Sobol, Okla., and Theo Cooper of Rufe, Okla.; and sisters, Loman Kittrel of Fort Towson, Okla., and Emily Hanson, Darress Allensworth and D. Myra Harris, all of Sobol, Okla.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Henry Richardson Sr. and Quentin "Red" Curtis; 12 brothers and sisters; and one grandson.
Nancy Grant, 86

Nancy Lee Grant of Plano died April 10 at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Plano. Funeral services were Friday morning at Pemberton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. John Pflug officiating. Burial was in Rosemound Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jim Manning, Harry Tipton, Richard Taylor, Doug Reese, A.B. Grant and Bryan Robertson. Honorary pallbearers are Nancy Reese and Joe Manning.
Grant was born Nov. 21, 1914, in Commerce, the daughter of John Cameron and Ava Lee DeJernett Brecheen. She was married to A.B. "Dick" Grant in 1945.
A former Commerce resident, Grant graduated from Commerce High School in 1932. She received her bachelor's degree in English and Art in 1936 from East Texas Teacher's College. Grant taught English during the 1930s and was a pioneer in education in the Spring Hill High School. She was the social director for the Moody House in Galveston and a volunteer for several organizations. She was a volunteer for charitable and civic organizations in the Rio Grande Valley before moving to Galveston in 1984, where she continued her volunteer work. Grant was a member of the United Methodist Church, Eastern Star, P.E.O. and president of the Pan American Round Table.
Surviving are daughters, Ava Taylor of Plano and Sally Tipton of Starksville, Miss.; granddaughters, Kirsten Lindsey of Plano and Nina Tipton of Oklahoma; and sisters, Norma Jean Manning and Ava Ann Duncin, both of Plano. She was preceded in death by a brother, John Breechen.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Research and Foundation.
John Williams Jr., 72

John Franklin Williams Jr. of Commerce died April 11 at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas following a battle with cancer. Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Monday at Bellaire United Methodist Church with Rev. Jack Albright and Rev. Peter Cammarano officiating. Graveside services are at Willis Cemetery in Willis.
Williams was born Sept. 10, 1928, in Willis, to Ola and John Franklin Williams Sr. He graduated from Willis High School in 1945. After graduation, Williams served in the Navy for two years. Following his discharge, he went to work in the parts warehouse of Homco International Inc., a Houston-based oil field services and supply firm. Williams worked his way up, becoming vice president of administration, then vice president of operations, and president and chief operating officer. When the company was acquired in 1975 by W.R. Grace, he was subsequently named corporate vice president for Grace's Natural Resources Group. Upon his retirement in 1990, he was named Chairman Emeritus of Homco. Williams served as treasurer of the Petroleum Equipment Suppliers Association from 1983 to 1989.
Williams was lay leader at Bellaire United Methodist Church until moving to Kerrville, where he served on the church's building committee. He was a member of Kavanaugh United Methodist Church in Greenville at the time of his death.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Ruby Williams of Commerce; daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Robert Rabb of Commerce; grandsons, Joshua Godwin and Eli Rabb of Commerce; stepgrandsons, Alex Rabb and John Rabb; sister, Bobby Jean Baque of Opelousas, La.; uncles, Henry Redmon and M.L. Duke; sister-in-law, Ruth Pool and brother-in-law, A.W. Pool. He was preceded his death by his son, John Thomas Williams; stepson, Lester Lalley; two sisters, Nona Murphy and Dortha Haltom.
Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Earthman Funeral Home Bellaire Chapel, which is in charge of arrangements.
