Loretta Ross Moore, 87

Services for Loretta Ross Moore of Greenville are set for 10 a.m. today at the First Baptist Church in Cumby with Dr. William McNatt and Rev. Robert Baldridge officiating. Burial will be in Cumby Cemetery. She died at her home at Harrison House in Greenville on Sunday.
Born near Lone Oak on Jan. 20, 1914, she was the daughter of Albert David Ross and Belle Stevens Ross. She married Lowell Moore on Nov. 10, 1934, in Cumby. She obtained her education in the Lone Oak public schools.
A member of Highland Terrace Baptist Church of Greenville, she had previously been an active member of the First Baptist Church of Cumby for 60 years. Moore had been a member of the Twentieth Century Club and the Eastern Star for approximately 40 years. During her years in Cumby, she was an active community worker and a frequent hostess for many gatherings in her home.
She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Jo and Larry Smith of Pilot Point and Linda and Ralph Hollywood of Greenville; sister, Mavis Earle; grandchildren, Sherri Farrill, Michael Smith, Jamey Smith, Kevin Williams and David Williams; great-grandchildren, Kristi Farrill, Kelli Farrill, Scotty Smith, Ashley Smith, Ross Shreaves, Sarah Shreaves, Jeremy Williams and Jennifer Williams; niece, Jean Ann Turner; nephews, E.J. Slemmons, S.R. Ross, Bill Ross and H.B. Earle.
Moore was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a brother, Sam Ross; a sister, Wilma Martin; and a nephew, Bobby Slemmons.
Pallbearers are Michael Smith, Jamey Smith, Jeff Farrill, Kevin Williams, Jeremy Williams and David Williams. Honorary pallbearers are Edward Clark, Bob Yarbrough, E.A. Junell, S.R. Ross, Bill Ross, H.B. Earle and E.J. Slemmons.
Paul D. Harbison, 63

Funeral services for Paul D. Harbison of Commerce will be held today at 2:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Commerce. Dr. Bobby Tollison and Dr. James Puckett will officiate at the service arranged by Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Brigham Cemetery in Campbell.
Harbison died Feb. 22 at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas. He was born in Clarksville, Texas, on Oct. 6, 1937, the son of Burl Issac and Clara Bean Harbison. On May 16, 1981, he married Margo Warlick Waters in Commerce. Harbison graduated from Clarksville High School and attended Paris Junior College. He served as a U.S. Army sergeant and also in the National Guard. In Commerce, he worked in grocery management with Brookshire's and was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Margo Harbison of Commerce; daughter, Marian Paulette Davenport and husband, Kenny, of Santa Fe, Texas; son, Jack Waters and wife, Pam, of Maryland; grandsons, Kyle Davenport of Santa Fe, Texas, and Harrison Waters of Maryland. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Charles Harbison.

Joe Earl Adams, 89

Graveside services for Joe Earl Adams of Nacogdoches were held at Rosemound Cemetery on Monday, Feb. 19. Pastor Natalie Chamberlain officiated at the service arranged by Pemberton Funeral Home.
Adams was born in Commerce on July 17, 1911, the son of Robert Earl and Nina Faye Apperson Adams. He married Hester Mae Sparks on Sept. 8, 1932 in Greenville. Adams was a former resident of Commerce. He moved to Nacogdoches to be near his family. He was a farmer. He was a carman and inspector for the railroad until his retirement in 1972. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Shriners and the First Christian Church of Commerce.
Survivors include his son, Joe Edward Adams and wife, Jackie, of Nacogdoches; brother, Marion Adams of Mt. Pleasant; sister, Lois Bullard of Commerce; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hester Mae Adams on Jan. 29, 1996; two sisters, Evelyn Johnson and Martha Stooksbury; and two brothers, Wayne and Homer Adams.
Samuella Reed Pickard, 65

Funeral services for Samuella Reed Pickard of Commerce, formerly of Mineola, were held yesterday, Feb. 20, at First Baptist Church in Pecan Gap. Rev. Woodrow Kirby officiated. Burial was in the Pecan Gap Cemetery under the direction of the Delta Funeral Home. She passed away Sunday, Feb. 18 in Sulphur Springs. Pallbearers were E.B. Shirley, E.L. Pickard, Richard Barber, Teddy Steward, Matt Steward, Sam Pickard, Chad Pickard and Nathan Singleton.
Pickard was born on July 21, 1935, in Cooper, the daughter of J.D. and Lorene Bruce Shirley. She married Charles Frances Pickard on March 21, 1953. She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Charles F. Pickard of Commerce; son, Charles W. Pickard of Fate; three daughters, Cheryl Hobbs of Golden, Shirley Barber of Commerce and Stacy Steward of Ridgeway; two brothers, Hoyle Shirley of Midlothian and Jimmy Shirley of North Richland Hills; and 10 grandchildren.
John Monroe Shumate, 99

Funeral services for John Monroe Shumate of Commerce were held Monday, Feb. 19 at Pemberton Funeral Chapel. Dr. Mike House officiated at the service, with interment at Rosemound Cemetery.
Shumate was born in Rockwall County on Oct. 29, 1901, the son of Robert Walter and Mary Willie Pippens Shumate. He married Jewell Hillard on May 5, 1922. Shumate was a long-time resident of Commerce. He was a graduate of Prairie View Community Schools in Rockwall County. He was head of security for Texas A&M University-Commerce until his death. He was a member of Odd Fellows. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Shumate is survived by his daughter, Gayle Shumate of Commerce. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jewell Shumate in 1996; one daughter, Eleanor Clyde Shumate in 1945; and one brother, Arnold A. Shumate in 1997. Memorials may be made to the Commerce Humane Society.
Leona Williams, 77

Leona Williams of Commerce died Monday, Feb. 19, at Oak Manor Nursing Home in Commerce. Bright-Holland Funeral Home has scheduled graveside services for 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22 at Union Cemetery in Taylortown with Rev. Roy Lee Dittmar officiating. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.
Williams was born Nov. 8, 1923, in Peacock, Texas, the daughter of John Layfette (Faddie) and Minnie Buntin Myers. She married Charles A. Williams on Nov. 7, 1952, in Dallas. He preceded her in death on May 20, 1996. She retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company after 27 years service to the company. She was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Cumby and was active in the "Mt. Zion Ladies."
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Jackie Williams of Cumby; three grandchildren, Wayne, Bridget and Reggie Williams, all of Cumby; one brother, Gwen Myers of Aspermont, Texas; and one sister, Edwinna Hickman of Aspermont, Texas.
Maurine H. Grimshaw, 88

Funeral services were held for Maurine H. Grimshaw of Greenville on Friday, Feb. 16, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Greenville. A memorial service and entombment at Greenwood Mausoleum will be held at a later date. She died in Greenville on Feb. 9.
A retired secretary, Grimshaw was born June 2, 1912, in Irving, and was reared in Alabama and Corpus Christi. She was a member of the Fort Worth Women's Club, Rajabian Book Club, Mockingbird Garden Club, Fort Worth Petroleum Engineers Auxiliary, Fort Worth Collectors Club and past president of St. Helda's Guild at St. Andrews Episcopal Church.
Survivors include her son, James A. Grimshaw, Jr., and wife, Darlene, of Greenville; grandchildren, James A. Grimshaw IV and wife, Heather, Courtney Fowler and husband, Cody; sister, Dean LaRue Haley of Greenville; niece, Suzie Betts and husband, Joe, of Fort Worth; and two great-nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Grimshaw, Sr., and two sisters.
Memorials may be sent to the American Heart Association, St. Andrews Episcopal Church of the American Cancer Society.
Greenwood Funeral Home in Fort Worth was in charge of arrangements.
Rex Murl Palmer, 61

Funeral services for Rex Murl Palmer of Tyler were held Feb. 15 at Pemberton Funeral Chapel. Rev. Mutt Wallace officiated. Interment followed at Spring Cemetery in Hugo, Okla. Pallbearers were Jonthan Chilton, Carl Fluke, Jackie Spring, Jimmy Webb, Johnny Rich and Kirk Palmer. Honorary pallbearers were grandsons, Lance Palmer and Randy Palmer II, both of Scott, La.
Palmer was born on Dec. 2, 1939, in Delta County, the son of Leon and Lorene Spring Palmer. He had lived in Tyler since 1971, having moved from Garland. He was a graduate of Garland High School. He was employed with Traine Air Conditioning in Tyler for over 20 years. Palmer was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Vietnam War under the rank of Master Sergeant. He enjoyed golfing, hunting and bowling and was a member of the local bowling league.
Survivors include his son, Randy Palmer and wife, Amanda, of Scott, La.; daughter, Many Miller of Egan, La.; grandsons, Lance Palmer and Randy Palmer II, both of Scott, La.; brother, Johnny Palmer of Commerce; sister-in-law, Sylvia Palmer of Commerce; sister-in-law, Helen Palmer of Garland; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, James Beryie Palmer.
Willie R. Norris, 89

Funeral services for Willie R. Norris of Mesquite will be today at 2 p.m. at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home in Greenville. Norris died in Commerce on Feb. 11. David Gibson will officiate, with burial to follow at Forest Park Cemetery. Norris' grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Norris was born in Aniston, Ala., on June 11, 1911, the daughter of Joseph and Margaret Clark Nowland. On Dec. 22, 1932, she married Fred M. Norris in Greenville. A member of the Mesquite Church of Christ, Norris worked as a seamstress for Howard Wolfe.
Survivors include her sons, Frank Norris of Greenville, James Norris of Emory and J.D. Norris of Quitman; daughters, Margaret Porter of Commerce, Rogene Shelton of Lake Texoma and Janice Lowery of Mesquite; sisters, Lola Webb of Lubbock and Kathleen Scarborough of Sulphur Springs; 18 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred Norris on Dec. 17, 1986; son, R.L. (Bob) Norris in May 2000; two sisters and four brothers.
