Ann Newton, 60

Ann Newton of Commerce passed away on Jan. 29. She was born Jan. 10, 1941, in Sebring, Fl., to Sam and Anne Mae Williams. Newton lived in Garland, Texas, for 30 years where she was state-licensed in home childcare for 20 years and attended Monica Park Christian Church. Three years ago she moved to Commerce where she was a therapeutic foster mother and attended the First Christian Church.
Newton is survived by her husband, Deane Newton of Commerce; son, Bob Newton and wife, Debbie, of Garland; daughter, Beverly Young and husband, Ray, of Sachse; three brothers, Sam Williams, Jr., Morris Williams and Jimmy Williams, all of Florida; seven grandchildren, Andrew and Michael Newton, and Melissa, Ryan, Kristen, Jillian and Shelby Young; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and two brothers.
Graveside services were held Friday, Feb. 2, at Rest Haven Memorial Park in Rockwall. Rest Haven Funeral Homes in Rockwall was in charge of arrangements.
Dorothy Jane Richards, 80

Funeral services for Dorothy Jane Richards of Arlington were held Friday, Feb. 2 at First United Methodist Church in Commerce. Dr. Mike House officiated at the service arranged by Pemberton Funeral Home. Interment followed at Rosemound Cemetery. Pallbearers were Gene Lockhart, James Deaton, Steve Humfeld, Charles McGough, John Binnion and Bill Oliver.
Richards was born in Commerce on Dec. 21, 1920, the daughter of Weaver Cleveland and Leila Victoria Spearman Drake. On July 18, 1946, she married James E. Richards in Commerce. She received her bachelor's and master's degrees in math from East Texas State Teachers College. She taught math and music at Hockaday School in Dallas and the Los Angeles City Schools. She taught math at East Texas State University, private piano lessons and she was church organist since the age of 14. She was a member of the Commerce Independent School Board from 1962-1974 and was president of the Arlington Fine Arts Council. Richards was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Commerce.
Survivors include her husband, James E. Richards of Arlington; sons, James Edward Richards, Jr., of Florissant, Mo., Mark Alan Richards and wife, Sarah, of Berkeley, Calif., and Donald Christopher Richards and wife, Patty, of San Francisco, Calif.; brothers-in-law, Lester L. Richards of Camp Hill, Penn., and Robert L. Richards of Coronado, Calif.; sister-in-law, Elizabeth McKee of Camp Hill, Penn.; nephew, Dr. Glen Drake of Temple, Texas; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
Irene Swinson, 75

Graveside services for Irene Swinson of Wolfe City were held yesterday at Sonora Cemetery in Fairlie. Rev. Clifton Julian officiated at the services arranged by Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home of Commerce. Swinson died Jan. 25 at Smith Nursing Center in Wolfe City.
Swinson was a retired cafeteria server at the Memorial Student Center of Texas A&M University-Commerce, formerly East Texas State University. She was a member of the Durham Baptist Church in the Durham Community. Born on Aug. 21, 1925, in Commerce, Swinson was the daughter of W.J. and Rhodie Hardin Johnson.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Wayne Swinson of Durham Community; son, Junior Eudy of Commerce; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by daughter, Thelma Ford in 2000 and sister, Gladys Ivy.
Brodie Thomas, 81
Brodie Thomas, a retired railroad administrator, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at a Fort Worth hospital. Graveside interment was held Jan. 25 at DFW National Cemetery.
Sgt. Thomas served in the US Army during World War II in the 36th Division, Company C in Italy. He was predeceased by his wife, Helen Berry Thomas, and his parents, Marvin and Ora Thomas. Thomas was born and raised in Commerce and attended East Texas State University.
Survivors include a special niece and companion, Dorothy Curtis of Arlington; great-niece and nephew, Ken and Bunny Floyd of Arlington; and sisters, Willie Mae Fooshee of Austin, Wanda Walker of Klondike, Blane Patterson of Commerce and Jean Wright of Moultrie, Ga.

Wallis "Buddy" Johnson, 47
Wallis "Buddy" Johnson of Sumner died Jan. 21, 2001 at Parkview Nursing Home. Services will be held today at 3 p.m. At Emberson Baptist Church. Rev. Paul Davis will officiate with interment to follow at Little Vine Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Rick Davis, Mike Akers, Jim Brookshire, Josh Streety, Jim Bryan and J.L. Wideman. Gene Roden's Sons Funeral Home, 425 South Church Street in Paris, is in charge of arrangements.
Johnson was born in Vinita, Okla., on Nov. 14, 1953, the son of Wallace and Freda Nazworthy Johnson. On Aug. 8, 1997, he married Tammy Basinger. A computer programmer at TYCO International in Commerce, Johnson was active in the Cub Scouts and was a member of Emberson Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Tammy Basinger Johnson of Sumner; father, Wallace Johnson of Vinita, Okla.; children, Jaylene Veach of Arkansas, Tahnee Basinger-Johnson and Tyler Basinger-Johnson, both of Sumner; sisters, Sally Grumbein and Linda Johnson, both of Vinita, and LaVonda Pegg of Kentucky; brothers, Bobby Dale Johnson of Missouri, Gene Johnson and Gary Johnson, both of Vinita; grandchildren, Kyle Jerome Veach and Nathan Gale Veach, both of Arkansas. He is also survived by six half-brothers and sisters, plus numerous nieces and nephews.
Nadelle Alexander Ainsworth Hooten, 88
Services for Nadelle Hooten were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001 at the First United Methodist Church in Commerce. She died Friday, Jan. 19, at Presbyterian Hospital in Commerce. The Rev. Mike House officiated with burial in Klondike Cemetery in Klondike, Texas at the Ainsworth family site, directed by Pemberton Funeral Home. Hooten had been a resident at Oak Manor Nursing Home in Commerce since 1994. Prior to that time and for most of her life, she lived in Delta County. She was born in Pecan Gap, Yowell Community, July 31, 1912, the daughter of Lee and Pearl Rainey Alexander. She married R. A. (Teadon) Ainsworth on June 21, 1931 in Choctaw County, Okla. Teadon preceded her in death in 1970. She married Deb Hooten on Nov. 26, 1973 in Parker County, Texas. He preceded her in death in 1996. She was also preceded in by two sons, Eddy Ainsworth in 1973 and Richard Lyndon Ainsworth in 1936. She was the last survivor of eighteen siblings born to Lee and Pearl Alexander. She is survived by one daughter and son, Patricia Ainsworth White of Garland, Texas and Jim Ainsworth of Campbell, Texas. Granny is survived and will be missed also by beloved daughter-in-law and caregiver Jan Ainsworth, eleven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. Pallbearers for the service will be her grandsons and grandsons-in-law, Jim White, James White, Johnny Young, Steve Schkade, Damon Ainsworth, Kevin Boles and Justin Nabors. Hooten worked in many occupations during her life to help support family including farmhand, seamstress, child care and factory worker, but she was most proud of her work as Mother and wife. She weathered extreme adversity and leaves her family with the eternal gift of unconditional love. Johnnie Ray McCord, 88
Services were held Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001 at 2 p.m. for Johnnie Ray McCord at First Baptist Church of Hutchins. She died Jan. 17 in Commerce. Rev. Joel Harris officiated with burial at Trinity Cemetery in Wilmer, Texas. McCord, a resident of Commerce, was born Feb. 6, 1918 in Glen Rose to John Andrew Wood and Eula Mae (Matthews) Wood. She married James Samuel McCord on Jan. 10, 1932 in Clovis, New Mexico. She was a former resident of Hutchins, She was a seamstress for Simmons Bedding Company of Dallas for 30 years. She was active in the Community Center in Hutchins. She was member of the First Baptist Church. McCord is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, James Samuel McCord on June 10, 1998, four sisters, Oleta Booher, Ethel Wood, Lucille Blasingame and Gracie Ball; three brothers, Payne, Andy and Edgar Wood and one great-granddaughter, Lane Fenoglio. Survivors include her son Sam McCord, of Commerce; daughter-in-law Barba McCord, of Commerce; son James Weldon McCord, of Gainesville, Texas; daughter-in-law Leslie McCord, of Gainesville, Texas; daughter Maxine Sewell, of Nocona, Texas; son-in-law Don Sewell, of Nocona, Texas; daughter Barbara Ann Reed, of Lancaster, Texas; son-in-law Teddy Reed, of Lancaster, Texas; brother A. V. Wood, of Fawell, Texas; sister Edna Seymore, of Sudan, Texas; sister Nova Dorsey, of Amarillo, Texas; sister Geneva Bradley, of Los Angeles, Cal.; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Gene Cunningham, 61
Services will be held today, Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001 at 2 p.m. for Gene Cunningham at Jones Memorial Chapel. Burial will be at Rosemound Cemetery in Commerce. Rev. James R. Jackson will officiate. Cunningham died Thursday, Jan. 18, at his residence in Cumby. He was born Oct. 24, 1939 in Philipsburg, Mo. to Claude Theodore Cunningham and Iva Mayfield Cunningham. He married Martha L. McClendon on Dec. 23, 1978 in Sulphur Springs, Texas. Cunningham is a veteran of the US Air Force. He was an electrical lineman, moving up to supervisor position, for Temple Associates. After retiring from Temple Associates, Cunningham worked in semi-retirement at Hunt County Lumber in Commerce for three years; then he worked at Raytheon as an airplane electrician for three years. Survivors include his wife, Martha L. Cunningham of Cumby; sons Calvin Eugene Cunningham, of Grandview, and Billy Mac Cunningham, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; daughters Annette Medina, of Grandview, and Robin Lynn Jones of Cumby; grandchildren Michael and Amanda Pfiester of Paris, Hunter Cunningham, of Cumby, Dalton Lee Cunningham and Madeline Rose Cunningham of Winston-Salem, N.C.; brothers Ralph Cunningham of Nianqua, Mo., and Donald Cunningham of Washington, Il.; sister Ruth Melton of Springfield, Mo.; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Clarence William "Red" Owen, Sr., 81

Funeral services for Clarence William "Red" Owen, Sr., of Euless, Texas, were held yesterday, Jan. 16, at Jones Memorial Chapel in Commerce. Bro. Rick Neathery officiated at the service arranged by Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home. Interment followed at Rosemound Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ralph Owen, Mike Knutson, Larry Kirkland, Sr., Larry Kirkland, Jr., Robert Kirkland and Jeremy Kirkland. Owen died on Jan. 14 at Heritage Estates Nursing Home in Ft. Worth. A carpenter with Carpenter's Local Union #429, Owen was born on June 11, 1919, in Alabama to Mitchell M. and Della Whitney Owen. In June 1954, Owen married Lois Evelyn White in Wolfe City. He was a World War II veteran and a member of Bedford Baptist Temple in Bedford, Texas. Survivors include brothers, Melton Owen of Ft. Worth and Revice Owen of Hurst; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, Lois E. Owen, on Nov. 29, 1991, and son, Clarence W. "Bill" Owen, Jr., on March 27, 1997.
Fred H. Hollon, 89

Funeral services for Fred H. Hollon of Commerce will be held tomorrow, Jan. 18 at 11 a.m. at Jones Memorial Chapel. Rev. Mike House will officiate. Masonic graveside service will follow at Rosemound Cemetery in Commerce. Commerce Masonic Lodge #439 A.F. and A.M. will serve as pallbearers. Hollon died Jan. 14 at Heritage Village Nursing Home in Richardson. Hollon, an insurance salesman with American National Insurance Co. for 26 years, was born on Sept. 4, 1911, in Commerce to Samuel and Myrtle Payne Hollon. He married Juanita Wood in Oklahoma on Jan. 14, 1932, their 69th wedding anniversary. Hollon retired from his company and was Commerce Fire Chief for many years. After retirement, he raised cattle. Hollon was no stranger to anyone in Commerce, as he spent his entire life here and called most everyone by their first name. He will be greatly missed by his family and remaining friends. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Commerce. Survivors include his wife, Juanita Hollon, who still resides at Heritage Village Nursing Home in Richardson; daughters, Wanda Freeman and husband, Ron, of Chandler, Az., and Shirley Duff and husband, Edward, of Richardson; grandchildren, Kristy Pamplin and husband, David, Julie Richards and husband, Randy, William Fred Duff, Tammy Duff Smith, Donna Duff McKool and husband, Kevin; great-grandchildren, Cole and Tyler Pamplin, Tatum Richards, Wendy and Samantha Smith and Christopher and Charles Edward McKool. Hollon was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Louie, Dan and Sammy Hollon. Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Visitation is there tonight from 6-7 p.m.

She married Carl Carothers on Nov. 23, 1931, in Fairlie, Texas. She was born March 14, 1913 in Hopkins County to L. B. Burns and Laura Richardson Burns. She is preceded in death in by her husband, Carol Carothers, who died July 22, 1992. She is survived by her son, Bob R. Carothers, of Rowlett, Texas. Services were held at Rosemound Cemetery on Thursday, Jan. 9, at 2 p.m. for Thelma Joe Vance, of Garland, Texas, who died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001. Rev. Bill Booher officiated. Vance was born Thelma Joe Prigmore to Clarence L. Prigmore and Lydia Rainey Prigmore on Dec. 12, 1917, in Commerce. She is preceded in death by her father and mother, and one brother, William W. Prigmore. Vance was a former resident of Commerce. She was a graduate of Clifton High School in Clifton, Texas. She was a sales clerk for Kmart and retired in 1983. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Murphy, Texas. Survivors include her son, David Cox of Trenton, Texas; daughter-in-law, Pat Cox, of Trenton, Texas; granddaughter, Lisa Webb of Garland, Texas; granddaughter, Leslie Kelso of Rolla, Mo.; granddaughter, Laura Cox of Trenton, Texas; brother, Carroll Lee Prigmore of Garland, Texas; and two great-grandchildren of Rolla, Mo.
