Maria Martinez Vera, 85, died Wednesday in a local hospital.
Prayer Service will be at 7 p.m. today in the Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Saint Vincent Pallotti Catholic Church with the Rev. Joe Uecker officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Vera was born in Beeville and moved to Abilene in 1941. She was the widow of Florencio Vera, whom she married in Runge in 1929. She was a homemaker and a member of Saint Vincent Pallotti Catholic Church. She had her Cursillistas.
Survivors include four daughters, Eloiza Rodriguez, Isabel Vera and Esther Cortez of Abilene, and Rachel Trevino of Winters; 13 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The family will be at 2297 North 20th Street.

Azilea Dois Claxton
Azilea Dois Claxton, 74, died Thursday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Claxton was born in Taylor County and worked as a chef in several area restaurants. She married T. L. Claxton in 1943. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda Tardiff of Abilene and Eulala Holston of Lewisville; one sister, Jo Palmer of Dallas; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will be at 625 Victoria.
Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Christine Crawford
Christine Crawford, 79, died Wednesday at a local hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory, with the Revs. David Cason and Riley Fugit officiating. Burial will be in Dudley Cemetery.
Mrs. Crawford was born in Comanche County and graduated from Gustine High School. She received degrees from McMurry College and Hardin-Simmons University. She retired after 32 years teaching in the Odessa Independent School District and the Abilene Independent School District. She married James D. "Dalt" Crawford in Abilene in 1943. She was a member of the Broadview Baptist Church, National Teacher's Association, Teacher's Education Association, and Texas State Teacher's Association. She is a past matron of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include her husband of Abilene; one daughter, Jan Carolyn Martin of Lubbock; two brothers, Elbert Lynn Adams and Gayle Adams both of Gustine; a sister, Winnie Mae Rhodes of Joplin, Mo.; and three grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Brett Ronald Smola
MIDLAND -- Brett Ronald Smola, 32, formerly of Abilene, died Tuesday in Midland.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory with the Rev. Arthur Lowe officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park.
Mr. Smola was born in Kingfisher, Okla., and lived most of his life in Abilene. He was a seafood manager for HEB Food Stores. He married Patricia Scott in Abilene in 1988. He was a member of First Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife of Midland; two daughters, Brittni Smola and Baije Smola both of Midland; his father, Ronald Smola of Bynton Beach, Fla.; his mother Linda Snow of Abilene; a brother, Scott Smola of Granada, Miss.; and a sister, Sunni Verret of Baton Rouge, La.

SAN ANTONIO -- A. Geneva Thompson, 77, died Tuesday.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today in the Porter Loring Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Hamlin Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Thompson was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church and was retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.
Survivors include three sons, Tony Thompson, Mike Thompson and John Thompson, all of San Antonio; three sisters, Melvin Strain, Leonora Branscum and May Eaton; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Cancer Society.

Retired Command Sergeant Major Herchel M. Johnson
BROWNWOOD -- Retired Command Sergeant Major Herchel M. Johnson, 74, formerly of Lake Brownwood and San Angelo, died Thursday in an Abilene Hospital.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ruben Packer officiating. Burial will be in Greenleaf Cemetery.
Mr. Johnson served in the European theater during World War II and in the Korean conflict. He was an aide to Gen. Charles E. Hart. He retired from the military in 1964 and retired from GTE in 1987. He was a member of Belle Plain Baptist Church of Brownwood. He married Billie Frances Allen in Brownwood in 1949.
Survivors include his wife of Abilene; two sons, Terry Johnson of Seattle, Wash., and Jeff Johnson of Abilene; one daughter, Nan Gentry of Abilene; two sisters, Jean Cole of Port Arthur and Jody Majors of Weslaco; four grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Virgie Lee Turner
MC ALLEN - Virgie Lee Turner, 79, formerly of Abilene, died Wednesday in Mission after a long illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today in the Grace Lutheran Church, directed by Gonzales Funeral Home in Edinburg. Private entombment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Turner was the widow of George Turner, whom she married in 1944 in Poplar Bluff, Mo. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and was active in bridge groups.
Survivors include one daughter, Jane Foeste of Olive Branch, Ill.; one brother, Bob Capper of Roanoke, Va; and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to Grace Lutheran Church.

Gladys B. Nelson
STAMFORD -- Gladys B. Nelson, 89, died Thursday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Bethel Lutheran Church in Ericksdahl with the Revs. Stan Leaf and Jeff Zell officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Churchyard Cemetery, directed by Tankersley Funeral Home.
Mrs. Nelson was a widow of John L. Nelson, whom she married in Ericksdahl in 1951. She attended Trinity Junior College and graduated from beauty college. She was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church, the women of ELCA and the Bethel Willing Workers.
She is survived by one sister-in-law, Dorine Newquist of Stamford; two nephews, Nathan Manske of Sacramento, Cal., and Don Newquist of Houston; one niece, Delores Hall of Lake Stamford; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Mary Elizabeth Kaminski
BOVINA -- Mary Elizabeth Kaminski, 75, died in Las Vegas, Nev.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today at the Bovina Cemetery with the Revs. Don McNerlin and Davis V. Edens officiating, directed by Ellis-Blackwell Funeral Home.
Ms. Kaminski was born in Oklahoma and had lived in Las Vegas for the last 18 years. She was a retired computer operator.
Survivors include five sons, Richard Kaminski of El Paso, Jerry Kaminski of Las Vegas, Nev., Keith Kaminski of Crows Landing, Cal., Kent Kaminski of Las Vegas, Nev., and Don Kaminski of Newman, Cal.; one daughter, Charlotte Lewis of Cupertino, Cal.; three brothers, Harry J. Charles of Lubbock; Mark M. Charles of El Paso, and Jimmy Charles of Deming, N.M.; one sister, Ellen Marie Estes of Bovina; ten grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
