Carl Collum
Carl J. Collum, 82, of Abilene died Saturday at a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory, with the Rev. David Cason officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park.
Mr. Collum was born in Hawley and lived in the Abilene area all his life. He graduated from Hawley High School in 1934 and was a retired salesman for Foremost Dairies. He had also worked for Ben E. Keith. He was a member of Broadview Baptist Church and had been a deacon since 1947. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He married Doris Evelyn Vinson in 1938 in Abilene.
Survivors include his wife, of Abilene; one son, Carl Collum of Bedford; one sister, Murle Duke of Orlando, Fla.; one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter.

Gene Evans
Gene Evans, 72, of Abilene, a professor at Abilene Christian University for 35 years, died Saturday at his home.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at University Church of Christ with Eddie Sharp officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
Mr. Evans was born in Tishomingo, Okla., and moved to Abilene in 1961. He retired from ACU and was a member of University Church of Christ and a life member of Phi Delta Kappa. He was a Merchant marines veteran. He married Betty Joanna Howell in 1948 in Pawnee, Okla.
Survivors include his wife, of Abilene; four sons, Tom Evans of Stafford, Va., Bob Evans of Houston, Stacy Evans of Abilene and Gene Evans of Hinesville, Ga.; two brothers, Art Evans of Abilene and Sam Evans of Chickasha, Okla.; and nine grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Christian Service Center, 901 Mesquite, Abilene 79601; or Hospice of the Big Country, 3113 Oldham Lane, Abilene 79602.
The family will be at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. today.

Denver Philex Stagner Sr.
RANGER — Denver Philex Stagner Sr., 74, a longtime lawnmower repairman, died Friday at an Abilene hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Speer officiating. Burial will be in Colony Cemetery.
Mr. Stagner was born in Ranger and grew up in the area. He worked as a heavy equipment operator and, after retiring, opened Stagner’s Lawnmower service. He married Nellie Mae Exline in 1946 in Cisco.
Survivors include his wife, of Ranger; three sons, Denver Felix Stagner Jr. of Ranger, Billy Ray Stagner of Gore, Okla., and James Michael Stagner of Hensley, Ark.; three daughters, Betty Jean Hogan, Wilma Marie Sybesma and Rebecca Ann Tibbels, all of Ranger; one brother, M.S. Stagner of Ranger; two sisters, Joyce Huckaby of Breckenridge and Lorene Smith of Abilene; 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several other relatives.

Lila Golden
COLORADO CITY — Lila Golden, 95, died Saturday at a local nursing home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Kiker-Seale Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Ted Spear officiating. Burial will be in Colorado City Cemetery.
Mrs. Golden was born in DeQueen, Ark., and had lived in Colorado City since 1949. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church. She married Louis Fred Golden in 1922 in DeQueen; he preceded her in death.
Survivors include one son, Howard Golden of Odessa; one daughter, Mary Ella Miller of Westbrook; nine grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Frances Brooks
COLORADO CITY — Frances Brooks, 69, died Saturday at an Abilene hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Westbrook with the Revs. Jim Mosely and Orvel Brantley officiating. Burial will be in Loraine Cemetery in Loraine, directed by Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.
Mrs. Brooks was born in Mitchell County, where she lived all her life. She was a retired insurance secretary and a homemaker. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Westbrook. She married Robert Brooks Sr. in 1947 in Colorado City; he preceded her in death.
Survivors include one son, Robert Brooks Jr. of Lubbock; four daughters, Irene McDonald of Alvord, Judy Graniczny of Decatur, Anita Molina of Odessa and Anne Lee of Briscoe; two brothers, Elmer Miles of North Richland Hills and James Miles of Jal, N.M.; one sister, Helen Morgan of Colorado City; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Velma Iola Gryder
CISCO — Velma Iola Gryder, 87, died Saturday at an Eastland hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Kimbrough Funeral Home Chapel with Ronnie Shackelford officiating, assisted by the Rev. Franklin Stevens. Burial will be in Longbranch Cemetery.
Mrs. Gryder was born near Rising Star and was a homemaker and a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church. She married Lee Roy Gryder in 1928 in Rising Star; he preceded her in death.
Survivors include four daughters, Patsy Phillips of Fort Worth, Peggy Sivers of Cypress, Nancy Dunlap of Northridge, Calif., and Cathy Warren of Conroe; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Val Howell Canon
WICHITA FALLS — Val Howell Canon, 89, formerly of Abilene, died Saturday at a local hospital.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Oakwood Cemetery in Waco with the Rev. John Goss officiating, directed by Lunn’s Colonial Funeral Home.
Mr. Canon was born in Odessa and graduated from Waco High School in 1927. He attended Southern Methodist University, Texas Tech University and Draughn’s Business College. He lived in San Antonio from 1931-1940, Abilene from 1940-1978, Waco from 1978-1979 and Wichita Falls since 1979. He was a retired self-employed accountant and was employed part-time by Midwestern State University Small Business Development Center. He attended Hillcrest Baptist Church and was a member of Woodhaven Baptist Church. He married Gilma Littleton in 1930 in Lubbock; she preceded him in death.
Survivors include one son, Val Canon Jr. of Dallas; one daughter, Sheryl Branscum of Lawton, Okla.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will be at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. today.

Nora Harbin
EASTLAND — Nora Harbin, 99, a longtime resident of Eastland, died Thursday in Houston.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with Tim Plant officiating. Burial will be in Eastland City Cemetery.
Mrs. Harbin was born in Freestone and was retired from Hollywood Vassarette. She was a member of Harmony Baptist Church in Morton Valley for many years, then a member of First Baptist Church in Eastland. She married Judge Harbin in 1917 in Fisher Hill near Eastland; he preceded her in death.
Survivors include one son, Willie Harlon Harbin of Eastland; one daughter, Dorita Riddle of Eastland and Eula Calhoun of Houston; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Jewel Carlile Jay
HAMLIN — Jewel Carlile Jay, 87, died Sunday at an Abilene hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Hamlin Church of Christ with Jerry Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Hamlin Memorial Cemetery, directed by Foster-Adams Funeral Home.
Mrs. Jay was born and attended school in Peacock in Stonewall County and later attended Abilene Christian College. She taught school and was girls’ basketball coach at Peacock for five years. She moved to Hamlin in 1935 and was a member and Bible schoolteacher at Hamlin Church of Christ. She was a bookkeeper for the family agri-business. She married Eddie Jay in 1934 in Roby.
Survivors include her husband, of Hamlin; three sons, James Eddie Jay Jr. of Anson, Jerry Jay of Granbury and Gary Jay of Abilene; eight grandchildren, one step-grandchild and three great-grandchildren.

Audrey Maxine ‘Auggie’ Barnett
MERKEL — Audrey Maxine “Auggie” Barnett, 88, formerly of Merkel, died Saturday in Lubbock.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Greg Kennedy officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, directed by Starbuck Funeral Home.
Mrs. Barnett was born in Westbrook and lived in Merkel from 1967 until moving to Lubbock in 1988. She was a seamstress, quilter and homemaker. She was a Methodist. She married Walter Barnett in 1945 in Lubbock; he preceded her in death.
Survivors include one son, Jerry Tanner of Georgetown; one daughter, Deloris McDonald of Lubbock; two brothers, Floyd Bales of Denver City and William Bales of Lubbock; one sister, Jewel Brown of Seminole; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
