Elbert Walker

JAYTON — Elbert Walker, 82, died Monday at his residence.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Reinbolt officiating. Burial will be in Jayton Cemetery, directed by Campbell Funeral Home of Spur.

Mr. Walker was born in Cross Plains and moved to Spur in 1926. He was the widower of Minnie Lee Standridge Walker, whom he married in Spur in 1938. In 1944 he moved to Jayton where he farmed until his retirement 15 years ago. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one son, Arden Lee Walker of Lubbock; one brother, Loyd Walker of Abilene; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Velda Wright

ROBY — Velda Wright, 86, died Tuesday in a local hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Weathersbee Funeral Home Chapel with Darrell Hart officiating. Burial will be in Roby Cemetery.

Mrs. Wright was born in Fort Smith, Ark. She married Floyd Wright in Vernon in 1933. She was a lifelong resident of Fisher County and a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include her husband of Roby; two sons, Jimmy Wright of Roby and R. Don Wright of Abilene; four sisters, Dorothy Terry of Roby, Emma Butler of Sweetwater, Mildred Self of Houston, and Emma Dunivan of Deming, N.M.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Verdie McNeill Hood

WINTERS — Verdie McNeill Hood, 100, died Sunday in a Ballinger nursing home.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the Winters Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Hanson officiating. Burial will be in the Wilmeth Cemetery.

Mrs. Hood was born in Hail County and moved to Runnels County in 1906. She graduated from Poes Chapel and attended Stanford College (now McMurry University). She was the widow of Arch J. Hood, whom she married in Ballinger in 1921. She was a homemaker and a member of the Literary and Service Club. She was also a member of First United Methodist Church of Winters.

Survivors include one son, John Hood of Winters; one daughter, Rita Stephenson of Wilmeth; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Burleigh Irwin

Burleigh Irwin, 92, of Abilene, died Tuesday in a local hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Starbuck Funeral Home Chapel in Merkel with the Rev. Jimmy Griffith officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Irwin was born in Sheridan, Penn. He married Ruth Plunkett on Nov. 10, 1949 in Pittsburgh, Penn. He worked for a steel manufacturing company in Pittsburgh prior to moving to San Bernadino, Calif., in 1960, where he worked for the city school system. He moved to Abilene in 1993. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include his wife of Abilene; two sons, Burleigh Irwin Jr. of Apple Valley, Calif., and John C. Irwin of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; two daughters, Elaine Goetz of Merkel and Linda Tonnochy of Moreno Valley, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Beth Whitehead

PUTNAM — Beth Whitehead, 69, died Tuesday in an Abilene hospital.

Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. today in the Putnam Cemetery with the Rev. Riley Fugit officiating, directed by Kimbrough Funeral Home.

Mrs. Whitehead was born in Emory. She married Joe Whitehead in Mexico in 1961. She was a former dorm supervisor at Abilene State School, and owned and operated Beth’s Place in Putnam. She was a Baptist.

Survivors include her husband of Putnam; her mother, Johnnie Fitzgerald of Carlsbad, N.M.; two sons, James Whitehead of De Leon and Russell Whitehead of Oplin; four daughters, Betty Jo Miller of Cisco, Linda Rivers of Baird, and Jo Lynn Collins and Sheri Whitehead, both of Putnam; one brother, Kenneth Hays of Aspermont; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Don M. Doyle

EASTLAND — Don M. Doyle, 71, of Lake Leon, died Tuesday at his home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Bakker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Wright officiating. Burial will be in Eastland Cemetery.

Mr. Doyle was born in Olney where he graduated from high school. He also graduated from Texas Tech University. He was the widower of Betty Ann Harkrider, whom he married in Eastland in 1950. He later married Betty Kelley. He was employed by R.M. Sneed Construction, retiring after 31 years as vice president and general manager. He also worked for Lone Cedar Country Club Pro Shop. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and was on the board of directors of Lone Cedar Country Club.

Survivors include his wife of Lake Leon; one daughter, Donna Cate of Eastland; two sons, Jerry Don Doyle of Eastland and James M. Doyle of Belton; one sister, Iris Baillio of Victoria; and five grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Jake Beach

COLORADO CITY — Jake Beach, 84, died Tuesday in a Big Spring hospital.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Colorado City Cemetery, directed by Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.

Mr. Beach was born in Hamilton. He served in the Air Force during World War II. He retired from the Colorado City Water Department.

Survivors include two sisters, Elwanda Jones of Colorado City and Jean Posey of Bastrop, La.; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Vada Huntley Crumpton

Vada Huntley Crumpton, 83, died Tuesday in a local hospital.

Private graveside services will be held Friday with Clint Logue officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.

Mrs. Crumpton was born in Quachita County, Ark., and moved to Abilene in 1994 from New Braunfels. She was the widow of Ralph C. Crumpton. She was a homemaker and a member of University Church of Christ.

Survivors include two sons, Carl D. Crumpton of San Angelo and Foy A. Crumpton of Austin; one daughter, Alana K. Logue of Abilene; and four grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Mattie Jean Thomas

WINTERS — Mattie Jean Thomas, 53, died Sunday at her residence.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Winters Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Gehrels officiating. Burial will be in Northview Cemetery.

Mrs. Thomas was born in Carthage and lived in the Winters area most of her life. She graduated from Paul Quinn High School in Waco. She was a caregiver and a member of First Baptist Church in Winters.

Survivors include two sons, Allen Thomas III and Terry Thomas, both of San Angelo; two daughters, Faye Thomas and Renae’ Thomas, both of San Angelo; three brothers, Raymond Charles Nickerson of DeBerry, and Frankie Nickerson and Bill Nellson Nickerson, both of Elysian Fields; three sisters, Nell Faye Robinson of DeBerry, Dorothy Faye Flannagan and Mattie Pearl Nickerson, both of Marshall; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Troy Jackson

BROWNWOOD — Troy Jackson, 76, died Sunday at a San Angelo hospital.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Eddy R. Hays officiating. Burial will be in Greenleaf Cemetery, directed by Heartland Funeral Home of Early.

Mr. Jackson was born in Malakoff. He served in the military during World War II. He had been a Brownwood resident since 1946 and was a retired cement contractor. He served as a deacon and trustee for the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and was active in the community and city of Brownwood.

Survivors include his wife, Cosette, of Santa Anna; three sons, Terrance Sillemon of Waco, Sammy Wade of Jacksboro, and Paul Stephens of Brownwood; four daughters, Marcia Jackson and Jessie Mae Latson, both of Dallas, Annis Walker of Big Lake, and Joyce Barnes of Brownwood; three brothers, Matthew Jackson Jr. and Oresta Jackson, both of Malakoff, and Sammy Roy Jackson of Brownwood, and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
