Stell Giles
Stell Ledger Giles, 87, of Abilene, died Monday in a local nursing home.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Elmwood Memorial Park with the Rev. Tom Thompson officiating, directed by North’s Funeral Home, 242 Orange. Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Giles was born in Hermleigh and graduated from Merkel High School. She was a 1930 graduate of Texas Tech University. She was the widow of Lewis Giles, whom she married in 1936. She moved to Abilene in 1945, and taught at Fannin and Jackson Elementary schools from 1958 to 1974. She was founder of the 50/50 Class at the First United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Cora Posey Chapter of the Eastern Star, the Retired Teachers Association, C.K. Chapter of P.&O., past president of the Athenian Club, and Delta Kappa Gamma.
Survivors include two daughters, Patsy Giles of Hereford and Gwyn Giles Kozma of McAllen; two sons, Lewis Giles of Garland and Claude Ray “Dogie” Giles of Waco; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and longtime friend, Eva Mae Cole.
Visitation will be from 6-7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the West Texas Rehab Center, 4601 Hartford, Abilene, TX 79605 or the donor’s favorite charity.

Verena Reed Wattenbarger
CISCO — Verena Reed Wattenbarger, 91, died Monday in an Eastland hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today in the Corinth Baptist Church with the Rev. Benny Hagen officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. today in the Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland, directed by Kimbrough Funeral Home of Cisco.
Mrs. Wattenbarger was born in Memphis. She was the widow of Johny Lee Wattenbarger, whom she married on Dec. 25, 1930, in Memphis. She attended Southwestern University and was a seamstress. She was a member of Corinth Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Martha Thompson of Cisco; one son, Jimmy Lee Wattenbarger of Fort Worth; five grandchildren; one step-grandchild; 12 great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Corinth Baptist Church of Cisco or the donor’s favorite charity.

Clarence Willie Shaffer
ALAMEDA, CALIF. — Clarence Willie Shaffer, 89, died Saturday in Oakdale, Calif.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Southside Baptist Church in Winters with the Rev. Ed Bigham and Marcy Grunn officiating. Burial will be in the Bluff Creek Cemetery in south Taylor County, directed by Winters Funeral Home.
Mr. Shaffer was born in the Moro community and graduated from Bradshaw High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1940 to 1941. He married Eloise Grissom on Aug. 30, 1941, in Shep and moved to California shortly thereafter. He had worked as a real-estate salesman and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Alameda.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Darell Shaffer of Mankato, Minn.; one daughter, Darlene Shaffer of Alameda, Calif.; one sister, Lola James of Winters; and six grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Helen Spain Mills
BROWNWOOD — Helen Spain Mills, 88, died Monday in a Brownwood hospital.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Greenleaf Cemetery in Brownwood, directed by Davis-Morris Funeral Home of Brownwood.
Mrs. Mills was born in Brownwood. She was the widow of James T. “Jimmie” Mills, whom she married in Durant, Okla. She was a homemaker and a member of Coggin Avenue Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Tommie J. Mills of Snyder; two sisters, Mary Kathrine Wilhelm and Tommie Ford, both of San Angelo; and three grandchildren.

William C. ‘Bill’ Preslar
CRANE — William C. “Bill” Preslar, 91, died Sunday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at the First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Craig and Raquel Mull officiating. Burial will be in the Crane County Cemetery, directed by Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home of Crane.
Mr. Preslar was born in Taylor County. He married Reba Gertrude Burton on Dec. 23, 1935, in Tuscola. He had been a resident of Crane for 63 years. He had worked as a lease operator for Gulf, and had owned and operated the Drillers Club. He was a member of the Crane Country Club and the First United Methodist Church of Crane. He was a founding father of Little League and Pony League, and served as a Cub Scout Master.
Survivors include his wife of Crane; two sons, Billy Carroll Preslar of San Ramon, Calif. and Jim Preslar of Crane; two brothers, L.W. Preslar of Crane and H.V. Preslar of North Richland Hills; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Calvin E. Johnson
EARLY — Calvin E. Johnson, 59, of Bangs, died Monday at his home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at The New Testament Holiness Church in Bangs with the Revs. Estavan Serrato and Ronnie White officiating. Private burial will follow later in Fairview Cemetery, directed by Heartland Funeral Home of Early.
Mr. Johnson was born on Pomona, Calif., and had lived in El Centro, Calif. before moving to Bangs in 1980. He had worked for Kohler Industries and was a member of The New Testament Holiness Church.
Survivors include his mother, Virginia Johnson of Bangs; one brother, Paul Johnson of El Centro, Calif.; and one sister, Virginia Davies of Bangs.

Victoria Beddo
ROBY — Victoria Beddo, 91, died Friday in a Dallas hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Church of Christ with Curtis Ward officiating. Burial will be in Roby Cemetery, directed by Weathersbee Funeral Home.
Mrs. Beddo was born in Robertson County. She was the widow of Gus T. Beddo, whom she married on Nov. 27, 1922, in Ballinger. She had lived in Roby for over 50 years. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include one son, Dearal W. Beddo of Denver, Colo.; two daughters, Katie Beddo of Garland and Mollie Zimmerman of Corpus Christi; numerous brothers; one sister; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ruddy Latham
MUNDAY — Ruddy Latham, 55, died Monday in an Abilene hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Munday Church of Christ with Greg Melton officiating. Burial will be in the Johnson Memorial Cemetery, directed by McCauley-Smith Funeral Home of Munday.
Mr. Latham was born in Knox City. He married Linda Hobert on Jan. 24, 1969, in Munday. He was a farmer and a member of the Munday Church of Christ. He was active in the vocational ag and FFA, raising and showing lambs. He was well known as a steel guitar player.
Survivors include his wife of Munday; two sons, Bryan Latham of Joshua and Kent Latham of Abilene; one daughter, Melinda Latham of Munday; his father, Alfred Latham of Munday; one brother, Gary Latham of Abilene; one sister, Judy Oliver of Abilene; and two grandchildren.

Melissa Pearl Curry
Melissa Pearl Curry, 86, of Abilene, died Tuesday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 U.S. Hwy. 277 south, with Dwight Whitsett officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park.
Mrs. Curry was born in Parker County where she attended school. She was the widow of Curtis Clarence Curry, whom she married in Weatherford in 1938. She lived in Amarillo for 23 years before moving back to Abilene. She was a member of the Highland Church of Christ in Abilene and Trinity Fellowship Church in Amarillo. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include one daughter, Jeanne Duke of Abilene; one son, Dr. John Curry of Amarillo; two sisters, Edith Bradley and Stella Mize, both of Weatherford; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Bobby W. Ewell
SAN ANGELO — Bobby W. Ewell, 60, died Monday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Johnson’s Funeral Home Chapel of San Angelo with burial in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Ewell was born in Big Spring. He was an U.S. Air Force veteran and was retired from Merchant Motor Lines.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Ewell, of San Angelo; two sons, Lawrence Ewell of San Angelo and Lelan Ewell of Tulsa, Okla.; one daughter, Debora Love of San Angelo; his mother, Volena Ewell of Odessa; one sister, Billie Underwood of Odessa; and four grandchildren.
