L.R. Steelman
L.R. Steelman, 76, a 40-year resident of Abilene, died Sunday in a Big Spring hospital.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. today at Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. Kevin Kennedy officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home. He will not lie in state.
Mr. Steelman was born in Hico, where he graduated from high school prior to finishing four years of schooling in the U.S. Navy. He served as a chief hospital corpsman during World War II until his retirement from the Navy. He also retired from the Borden Milk Company where he was a supervisor. He married Marjorie Cambron in Seattle, Wash., in 1945. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and Sons of Herman.
Survivors include his wife of Abilene; two sons, Leon Rudolph Steelman of Abilene and Leo Raymond Steelman of Abilene; one daughter, Leona Reba Gomez of Chapel Hill, Tenn.; one brother, Cleo Steelman of Calif.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Edward Dean McEwin
COMANCHE — Edward Dean McEwin, 87, died Friday in a Brownwood care center.
Services were held Sunday in the Board Baptist Church with Gerald Burns officiating. Burial was in the Oakwood Cemetery in Comanche, directed by Hall & Sons Funeral Home of Comanche.
Mr. McEwin was born in Antler, Okla. He was a self-employed construction worker and a Baptist.
Survivors include four sons, Billie Dean McEwin of Midland, John McEwin of Owasso, Okla., Ray McEwin of Odessa, and Clint McEwin of Santa Anna; one daughter, Mattie Woolsey of Comanche; one half-sister, Nona Williford of Comanche; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the charity of donor’s choice.

Marguerite Sloan Miller
COLORADO CITY — Marguerite Sloan Miller, 87, died Monday in a local hospital.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today in the Colorado City Cemetery with Kerry Cain and Royce Clay Sr. officiating, directed by Kiker-Seale Funeral Home of Colorado City.
Mrs. Miller was born in Waxahachie and had been a longtime resident of Colorado City. She was the widow of Grady Sloan, whom she married on Nov. 1, 1928, in Sweetwater. She was also the widow of Clyde Miller Jr., whom she married on April 21, 1965. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
Survivors include one son, Morris Sloan of Colorado City; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

John Howard Bass
GEORGETOWN — John Howard Bass, 72, died Monday.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today in the Gabriel Funeral Home in Georgetown. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Georgetown.
Mr. Bass was born in Lubbock and graduated from Amarillo High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Corinne Thompson on Oct. 18, 1946. He graduated from Texas Tech University in 1950 with a degree in Petroleum Geology and obtained his Master’s degree in Geology in 1951. He worked for The Texas Company (Texaco) as a Well Site Geologist and retired in 1981 as manager of exploration for Texaco. He then joined Petroleum Corporation of Texas and, several years, later founded his own oil and gas exploration company, Bass Energy, Inc. He moved to Georgetown in 1999.
Survivors include his wife of Georgetown; one son, James “Jim” Howard Bass of Georgetown; one daughter, Linda Bass Cauffman of Marble Falls; his mother, Minola Pearl Day; two sisters; two brothers; and one grandchild.

James O. Pond
ARLINGTON — James O. Pond, 47, died Wednesday, June 30, in Arlington.
Services were held Friday, July 2, at the Moore Funeral Home Bowen Road Chapel in Arlington. Burial was in the Clyde Cemetery in Clyde, TX.
Mr. Bond was born in Abilene. He moved to Arlington in 1971. He had been associated with Fred Oakley Motors for more than ten years and worked as a certified mechanic.
Survivors include his wife, Lorie Pond of Arlington; one son, James Pond Jr. of Arlington; one daughter, Jennifer Costlow of Powell; his mother, Juet Ohlhausen of Ballinger; three brothers, Jerry Pond of McKinney, Joel Pond of Melissa; and Joseph Pond of Alaska; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Eva Mae Satterwhite
Eva Mae Satterwhite, 80, former resident of Avoca and Stamford, died Monday in Kingsville.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 10, in Elmwood Memorial Park in Abilene with the Rev. Joe Langley officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
Mrs. Satterwhite was born in Tulsa, Okla. and moved to south Texas in 1961. She was the widow of Henry C. Satterwhite, whom she married on July 7, 1941. She was a member of the Kingsville First Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Phil Satterwhite of Kingsville; two daughters, Vicki Best of Snyder and Barbara Satterwhite of Houston; one sister, Betty Grimes of Stamford; and five grandchildren.

Staff Sgt. Richard Dean Hicks
Staff Sgt. Richard Dean Hicks, 33, died Thursday, July 1, in Ohio.
Services will be at 10 a.m Friday, July 9, at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Phil Christopher officiating. Burial will be in the Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
Sgt. Hicks was born in San Diego, Calif. and had lived in the Abilene area since 1979. He was the valedictorian at Clyde High School in 1984. He had attended McMurry University and Cameron University in Lawton, Okla. He joined the U.S. Army in 1990. He married Kristy Fisher on June 12, 1987 in Abilene. He was a Baptist and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Lawton, Okla. and Canton, Ohio.
Survivors include his wife of Abilene; three sons, Alan Hicks II, Gerald Hicks, and Hunter Hicks, all of Abilene; his parents, Alan and Joan Hicks of Abilene; three brothers, Steven Hicks of Azle, and Robert Hicks and David Hicks both of Abilene; one sister, Debra Potts of Abilene; his grandparents, Edward and Phyllis Frost of Tye; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The family will receive friends at the Hardin-Simmons Room of the Ramada Inn.

Emma Baitz Raphelt
STAMFORD - Emma Baitz Raphelt, 91, died Wednesday in a local nursing home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 9, in the Sagerton Faith Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the Old Glory Cemetery in Old Glory, directed by Kinney Funeral Home.
Mrs. Raphelt was born in LaGrange where she attended school. She moved to the Old Glory area in 1921. She was the widow of Fritz Baitz, whom she married on Dec. 21, 1926. She was also the widow of Herman Raphelt, whom she married in 1952. She worked as the cafeteria supervisor in the Old Glory School for six years. She taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible school, sang in the choir, and held various offices in the Women's Missionary League of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod where she was a lifelong member through the Zion Lutheran Church of Sagerton, the Zion Lutheran Church in Abilene, and the Faith Lutheran Church in Sagerton. She was honored as the Lutheran Woman of the Year in 1971.
Survivors include five children, Dorothy Clark, Mae Stegemoeller, and Melvin Baitz, all of Sagerton, Ruby Olson of San Angelo, and Leslie Baitz of Leander; two stepchildren, Herman Raphelt Jr. of Lubbock and Lillie Mae Reed of Roby; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren; four step-great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Elias Eddie Nayfa
SWEETWATER - Elias Eddie Nayfa, 55, died Monday in an Arlington hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel of Memories in Sweetwater wit the Rev. Mike Redden officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery.
Mr. Nayfa was born in Roscoe. He married Ann Robbins on Feb. 27, 1986 in Las Vegas, Nev. He was a graduate of Sweetwater High School and McMurry College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was an artist and had lived in Arlington for the past two years. He was a member of the Sweetwater Lodge 571 and a 32nd degree Mason. He was also a member of the Suez Shrine Temple in San Angelo and a member of the Sweetwater First Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include his wife of Arlington; two daughters, Vanessa Nayfa of Gilbert, Ariz. and Elisa Nayfa of San Angelo; his mother, Ruby Nayfa of Sweetwater; three sisters, Almaz Webb of Loraine, Maureen Dieb of Dallas, and Betty Dement of Odessa; and two great-grandchildren.
