John Vernon Jones
John Vernon Jones, 27, of Abilene, died Saturday in Ranger, TX, in an automobile accident.
Services will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 20, at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Faith, 5701 Hwy. 277 South with Paul White, Bob Marcho and John Robinson officiating.
John was born in Auckland, New Zealand and moved to Abilene in 1984 from Nairobi, Kenya, East Africa.
He was a salesman and a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include his parents, Joe Vern Jones of Victoria and Sally Scogin Jones of Abilene; one daughter, Matalynn Barr of Abilene; two brothers, Jeff Lee Jones of Arlington and Eric Paul Johnson of Tuscola; one sister, Jill Ann Johnson of Tuscola; and one niece.

Eugene Poindexter
OPLIN — Eugene Poindexter, 75, died Saturday at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, at the Lawn First Baptist Church with the Rev. Price Mathieson officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be in Tecumseh Cemetery in Callahan County, directed by Fry-Bartlett Funeral Home of Tuscola.
Mr. Poindexter was born in Oplin, where he graduated from high school in 1942.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Doris Rodgers on July 30, 1951 in Abilene. He worked as a welder for El Paso Natural Gas Co. in Farmington, N.M. for 23 years.
He lived in Fort Worth and Trent prior to returning to Oplin in 1989. He was a member of the Lawn First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of Oplin; three daughters, Linda Shultz of Carrollton, Sandy Taylor of Potosi, and Billie Jean Fannin of Oplin; one sister, Mary Floyd of Newark; one brother, J.R. Poindexter of Oplin; and four grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Elaine Petteys
Elaine Petteys, 63, died Friday at her home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory. Burial will be in Hamby Cemetery with the Rev. Rex Boggs officiating.
Mrs. Petteys was born in Walker County, Ala. and moved to Abilene in 1973.
She was the widow of William Petteys, whom she married in El Paso in 1969. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
Survivors include her son, David F. Duke of Montgomery, Ala.; four daughters, Rachell Darlene Kielman, Violet Massey, and Denisa Patterson, all of Abilene, and Donna Elliott of London, TX.; one brother, Derrix Eiland of Empire, Ala.; two sisters, Marie Dover of Empire, Ala. and Emma Parrot of Ga.; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Maggie Scott Cook
LAKE BROWNWOOD — Maggie Scott Cook, 99, died Saturday in a Brownwood care center.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Belle Plaine Cemetery near Baird with the Rev. Richard Hetzel officiating, directed by Parker Funeral Home of Baird.
Mrs. Cook was born in Baird and had lived in Callahan County all her life until the last three years, when she moved to Lake Brownwood.
She was the widow of C.R. Cook, whom she married in Baird in 1919. She was active with the Red Cross during World War II and made blankets for the Shriner’s Burn Center.
She had worked as an insurance agent. She was a longtime secretary for the Belle Plaine Cemetery, a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Baird, and the oldest member of the Lake Brownwood Lions Club. She was a Baptist.
Survivors include one daughter, George Cecil Stone of Lake Brownwood; one sister, Anna Myrl McGowen of Sherman; one brother, Jack Scott of Cross Plains; two grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and 4 great great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. today at the Heartland Funeral Home in Early and also from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, at the Parker Funeral Home of Baird.

Roberta Johnson
SLATON — Roberta Johnson, 57, died Sunday at a local care center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Bales officiating. Burial will be at 4:30 p.m. in the Howard Cemetery near Desdemona, directed by Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton.
Mrs. Johnson was born in Stephenville. She married Paul Johnson on Oct. 10, 1959 in Granbury. She lived in Lubbock from 1960 to 1966, when she moved to Slaton. She attended Tarleton State University and graduated from Texas Tech University with a BA in Education and received her Master’s of Education from Texas Tech University. She had previously worked for McMillian Trucking of Lubbock. She taught biology, business and computer science at Slaton High School. She was an administrative assistant in Slaton High School. She was the original organizer of the Project Celebration Drug Free Party and the Awards Ceremony in Slaton High School. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Friendship Sunday School Class, Athenian Study Club, Slaton Classroom Teacher Association, and the Kappa Kappa Iota Sorority.
Survivors include her husband of Slaton; one son, Greg Johnson of Lawrence, Kan.; one daughter, Paula Palmer of Burleson; her parents, Robert and Marie Halbert of Stephenville; one sister, Judy Ann Brown of Dallas; and four grandchildren.

Gloria J. Sullenger Anderson
BANGS — Gloria J. Sullenger Anderson, 72, died Sunday at her residence.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 24, at the Coleman City Cemetery Pavilion, directed by Walker Funeral Home of Coleman. The remains were cremated.
Mrs. Anderson was born in Amarillo. She was the widow of Andy Anderson, whom she married in Fort Sumner, N.M. on Dec. 31, 1945. She had lived in Bangs since 1959. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
Survivors include one daughter, Lorene Faries of Bangs and one son, A.J. Anderson of Bangs.

Robert Deloy Wilson
HAMILTON — Robert Deloy Wilson, 77, died Friday in an Abilene care center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today in the Riley Funeral Home Chapel in Hamilton with George Tolbert officiating. Burial will be in Indian Gap Cemetery in Indian Gap, TX.
Mr. Wilson was a lifetime resident of the Indian Gap and Pottsville area. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne. He was the widower of Sylvia Mae Embrey, whom he married in 1946. He served on the Pottsville School Board and as an office with the Farm Bureau. He was a sponsor for the Future Farmers of America.
Survivors include five daughters, Patricia Boulton of Austin, Cindy Kile of Garland, Jenifer Dickerson of Abilene, Debra Hanes of Lanham, and Roberta Pinkerton of Comanche; six sisters, Wanda Baier of Parr, Nona Fe Wiedebusch of Hamilton, Anella VanHuss of Midland, Nita Jean Rongey of Clear Oak, Calif., Joan Giese of Hamilton, and Chyrel Daniel of Portland, Ore.; one brother, Bill Wilson of Hamilton; eight grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Ura Edith Lee
RANGER — Ura Edith Lee, 80, died Sunday at an Eastland care center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, at the Edwards Funeral Home of Ranger with the Rev. Danny Lee officiating. Burial will be in Wayland Cemetery.
Mrs. Lee was born in Clarksville and attended school in Denton and Red River Counties. She was the widow of Emery D. Lee, whom she married on Jan. 31, 1938.
She attended the First Baptist Church of Denton. She was interested in history and genealogy.
Survivors include three sons, Emery L. Lee of Breckenridge, Larry E. Lee of Una Vista, Colo., and Kinley R. Lee of Ranger; nine grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
