SWEETWATER — Christopher Michael Arnold, newborn, died Saturday in a local hospital.
Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. today at the Roscoe Cemetery, directed by McCoy Funeral Home.
Survivors include his parents Larry and Ruby Arnold of Sweetwater; one brother, Joshua Arnold of Brenham; one sister, Amber Arnold of Pasadena; grandparents Ronald and Mae Porter of Sweetwater and Clara Thurman of East View, Ky.; and several aunts and uncles.

Orell Battles
Orell Battles, 93, charter member of the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, died Thursday at her home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, at the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church with the Rev. L.W. Hutchinson officiating. Burial will be at Oddfellows Cemetery, directed by Curtis-Starks Funeral Home of Abilene.
Mrs. Battles was born in and attended school in Calvert. She was the widow of Jink Battles, whom she married on Nov. 12, 1922 in Calvert. She moved to Taylor County 56 years ago and worked as a domestic worker until her retirement. She served as a Sunday school teacher, secretary, president and teacher of Mission and Benevolence treasurer at the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, J.D. Battles of Oxnard, Calif. and Willie C. Battles of Los Angeles, Calif.; three daughters, Paralee Norman and Rosie Lee Stevenson, both of Abilene, and Addie Nowlin of Houston, 23 grandchildren; 58 great grandchildren; 44 great great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today at the church.

Herschel Raymond Weedon
BROWNWOOD — Herschel Raymond Weedon, 91, died Sunday at a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, at the Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Brownwood with the Revs. Bob Riley and Mike Riley officiating. Burial will be in the Greenleaf Cemetery.
Mr. Weedon was a 1926 graduate of Brownwood High School, and received his BA from Howard Payne College and his MA in Theology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was the widower of Pattie Lee Cross Weedon, whom he married on Nov. 8, 1927 in Waco. He was a career member of the Army Chaplains Corps. After his retirement, he pastored at Grosvenor Baptist Church and the Calvary Baptist Church in May. He was a member of the local historical society.
Survivors include three children, Jack Raymond Weedon of Brownwood, Dr. Jerry Lee Weedon of Modesto, Calif., and Dr. Lynell Weedon Marshall of La Palma, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

John J. Bass
EARLY — John J. Bass, 72, died Monday in a Brownwood hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, at the Heartland Funeral Home Chapel in Early with the Revs. Leo Shaw and Kason Huddleston officiating. Burial will be in the Greenleaf Cemetery.
Mr. Bass was born in Barbuton, Ohio. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a retired truck driver. He married Juanita Nicks on March 13, 1993 in San Angelo. He moved from San Angelo to Early in 1996. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife of Early; one son, John Wayne Bass of Calif.; one stepson, Kenneth Nicks of Brownwood; one daughter, Trish Woodworth of San Angelo; two stepdaughters, Marsha Tomlinson of Ozona and Janice Banner of Hawley; one grandchild; 11 step grandchildren; and 15 step-great-grandchildren.

Silas McClendon Duncan
Silas McClendon Duncan, 85, of Abilene, died Tuesday at a local nursing center.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 22, in McBee Cemetery with H.O. Walker officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
Mr. Duncan was born in Weches near Alto and moved to Abilene from Lawn in 1921. He attended schools in Abilene and Wylie. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 21 years and was a veteran of World War II. He retired in 1964. He returned to Abilene from Wurtsmith Air Force Base in 1961. He then worked for Civil Service at Dyess Air Force Base until his retirement in 1978. He was the widower of Elsie Phillips Pimlott Duncan and Gladys Inez Duncan. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include one son, John Pimlott of Tucson, Ariz.; three brothers, Grady H. Duncan of Abilene, Roland Ray Duncan of Sealy, and Truman Duncan of Ozona; three grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Rita J. Scales
Rita J. Scales, 68, a longtime resident of Abilene, died Monday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday, July 23, at the Pioneer Drive Baptist Church with Dr. Stan Allcorn, Rev. Jack Riddlehover, and Dr. Jeff Reid officiating. Burial will be in Potosi Cemetery, directed by Allen-Korzenewski Funeral Home.
Mrs. Scales was born in Potosi and graduated from Abilene High School in 1952. She was a resident of Hendrick Home for Children for eight years. She had been a teacher’s aide at Woodson. She was the widow of Joe Carlton Scales and a member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Rickey Scales of Dallas and Mickey Scales of Abilene; one daughter, Vickie J. Lane of Abilene; one brother, Charles Phillips of Fla.; five sisters, Gloria Phillips of Plano, Irene Bell of Melissa, Hazel Bulfnoff of Mojave, Calif., Martha Chandler of Abilene, and Christine Martin of Fort Worth; and four grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 22, at the funeral home.

Tinnie Velma Ballard
BROWNWOOD — Tinnie Velma Ballard, 85, died Monday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 4 p.m. today at the Greenleaf Cemetery with the Rev. R.J. Elkins officiating, directed by Davis-Morris Funeral Home of Brownwood.
Mrs. Ballard was born in Bertram and had lived in Brownwood since 1944. She was the widow of Eddie Aldolph Ballard, whom she married on July 22, 1937 in San Angelo. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
Survivors include six sons, Leo Ballard and Vernon Ballard, both of Austin, Carl D. Ballard of San Angelo, and James Rudolph Ballard, Delnor Ballard, and John Henry Ballard, all of Brownwood; one daughter, Glenda Ballard of Brownwood; two stepsons, Eddie Eugene Ballard and Ernest Ballard, both of Brownwood; 31 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

James Albert George
HAMLIN — James Albert George, 93, died Monday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Howard Jones and Dr. Tracy Watson officiating. Burial will be in Hamlin Memorial Cemetery, directed by Foster-Adams Funeral Home of Hamlin.
Mr. George was born in Indian Territory, Okla. He moved to Fisher County in 1919 and attended school in Hitson. He was the widower of Grace Branscum George, whom he married on March 15, 1925 in Boyd’s Chapel and was also the widower of Georgia Blackwood Bell George, whom he married on April 6, 1963 in Albuquerque, N.M. He was a deacon of the First Baptist Church where he was a member of the Faithful Sunday School Class.
Survivors include one son, Callens George of Pampa; two daughters, Jimmie Dee Flanagan of Hamlin and Bettye Sewell of Weatherford; three sisters, May Eaton of Brownwood, and Lenora Branscum and Melvin Strain, both of Austin; 11 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and six great great grandchildren.

Gracie Ellen Jennings
COLEMAN — Gracie Ellen Jennings, 90, died Monday at a local nursing home.
Services were held Tuesday with burial in Fairview Cemetery, directed by Stevens Funeral Home.
Mrs. Jennings was born in Grosvenor and attended Cottonwood School. She was the widow of Chester Monroe Jennings, whom she married on Dec. 26, 1928 in Burkett. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include one daughter, Vonda Jean Gauer of Coleman; two grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren.

Fidelis J. ‘Slim’ Loran
WINDTHORST — Fidelis J. “Slim” Loran, 84, died Monday at his residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rhineland with the Rev. Jeremy Myers officiating. Burial will be in the St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Munday, directed by McCauley-Smith Funeral Home of Munday.
Mr. Loran was born in Rhineland and moved to Windthorst in 1969. He married Agnes Redder on May 30, 1950 in Rhineland. He was retired from the Windthorst Independent School District. He was a member of the Windthorst St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Windthorst Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife of Windthorst; five sons, Joe Loran and John Loran, both of Windthorst, Michael Loran of Scotland, TX, James Loran of Seymour, and Anthony Loran of Wichita Falls; five daughters, Rita L. Mooney, Christine Brooking, and Marquita Brooking, all of Wichita Falls, Joan Atchley of Blanket, and Julia Oechsner of Barnhard, Mo.; one brother, Eric Loran of Subiaco, Ark.; five sisters, Andrea Loran of N. Little Rock, Ark., Roselia Pokorny of Wichita Falls, Mary Kuehler of Rhineland, Jeanette Zeissel of Rhineland and Monica Myers of Harlingen; and 19 grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Windthorst Library Fund and the Kristi Krahl Scholarship Fund in Scotland, Texas.
