John Wayne Gober Jr.
BROWNWOOD — John Wayne Gober Jr. died Sunday at a local hospital.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Swindler officiating. Burial will be in Coleman City Cemetery.
Mr. Gober was born in Brownwood, where he lived all his life. He was a member of the Pentecostal church and worked for Ace Tree Service. He married Wanda Dyer in 1992 in Brownwood.
Survivors include his wife, of Brownwood; one son, Daniel Wayne Gober of Whitney; two stepdaughters, Kim Baldwin and Billie Hamill, both of Fort Worth; his parents, John and Linda Gober and Willie and Linda Gatlin, all of Brownwood; six brothers, Royce Daniel, William Gatlin and Jeffery Gober, all of Brownwood, Billy Gatlin of San Angelo and Kenneth Hamill and Robert Hamill, both of Fort Worth; one sister, Sabrina Gatlin of Brownwood; grandparents Flossie Mae Qualls of Brownwood and Jean Purifoy of Junction; five grandchildren and numerous other relatives.
The family will be at the funeral home from 7-8 p.m. today.

Betty Hickman
Betty Hickman, 67, of Early, died Sunday at her home.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in Elmwood Memorial Park with the Rev. Mark Reynolds officiating, directed by Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 U.S. Hwy 277 South.
Mrs. Hickman was born in Alba. She married Wallace Hickman on December 21, 1951 and was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, of Early; one son, Phil Hickman of Clint; one daughter, Carole Hendley of Lubbock; one brother, Paul Williams of Abilene; one sister, Laura Head of Southlake; and five grandchildren.

Marie Chastain
Marie Chastain, 79, died Monday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory, with the Revs. Kevin Kennedy and Rickie Rister officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park.
Mrs. Chastain was born in Tye and grew up in Hodges. She attended school in Mulberry Canyon, southwest of Merkel, and moved to Abilene in 1947. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and was the widow of Doyle David Chastain, whom she married on December 2, 1950 in Abilene.
Survivors include one son, Mike Chastain of Abilene; two daughters, Jo Ann Jennings Dalton of Odessa and Judy Godsey of Abilene; two sisters, Mary Clark and Christine Martin, both of Abilene; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family will be at 1818 Sewell.

Jewel Young
Jewel Young, 90, died Tuesday in a local nursing home.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Cedar Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Allan Cartrite officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
Mrs. Young was born in Comanche County and moved in 1919 to Abilene, where she attended Abilene High School. She worked as a cook for Mack Eplen’s, Arthur’s Cafeteria and Wyatt’s Cafeteria, each for 13 years apiece, until retiring. She was a member of North Park Baptist Church and was the widow of William G. Young, whom she married on March 28, 1926 in Anson.
Survivors include one daughter, Wancele Pritchett of Abilene; one half-brother, H.T. Strickland of Abilene; two half-sisters, Ponice Fisher of Abilene and DeLora Taylor of Hamlin; one grandchild; and six great-grandchildren.

William ‘Bill’ Kincaid Wiggins Sr.
William “Bill” Kincaid Wiggins Sr., 94, died Monday in a local nursing home.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today in Iberis Cemetery with Howard Lang officiating, directed by North’s Funeral Home, 242 Orange.
Mr. Wiggins was born in Iberis, where he attended school. As a youngster, he was a boxer and wrestler and appeared in the movie “All is Quiet on the Western Front.” He helped build Camp Barkeley and operated the Wiggins Dairy Farm from 1941-58. He also was a farmer and rancher. He was a member of Wylie Baptist Church and was the widower of Opeal Beall Wiggins, whom he married in 1933.
Survivors include two sons, W.K. Wiggins Jr. of Abilene and James Wiggins of Amarillo; two daughters, Delores Lang of Austin and Darlene White of Grand Prairie; two brothers, L.L. Wiggins of Iberis and Fowler “Don” Wiggins of Abilene; one sister, Lula Wiggins of Waco; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

‘Ervin’ Petross
Lawrence “Ervin” Petross, 95, died Tuesday at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in North’s Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, 4002 Buffalo Gap Road, with Wayne White officiating. Burial will be in Downing Cemetery.
Mr. Petross was born in Blanket and grew up in Blanket and Brownwood. He moved from Brownwood in 1950 to Sedalia, where he worked for Swift & Co. until retiring in 1967. He then moved to Abilene. He was the widower of Neva Petross. He married Juanita Jones in 1970 in Abilene. He wholesaled pecans and watermelons in the Abilene area. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, of Abilene; two stepchildren, Linda McElroy of Colleyville and Tony Jones of Abilene; and several nieces and nephews.

Florence Lee Hughes
Florence Lee Hughes, 95, who, along with her husband, owned and operated automotive dealerships for many years, died Tuesday in a local hospital.
Private burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kathryn Boren and Dr. David Hamblin officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
Mrs. Hughes was born in Graford and graduated from Southern Methodist University. She taught school in Graford. She and her husband moved in 1927 from Graford to Merkel, where they owned the town’s first Chevrolet dealership. The couple moved in 1936 to Abilene, where they owned the Ford, Dodge and Plymouth, and Buick dealerships until her husband’s death in 1962. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Abilene Woman’s Club, Harmony Club and Quilt Club. She also was a member of Builders Sunday School Class for many years at St. Paul United Methodist Church and was the widow of Fred C. Hughes, whom she married on June 17, 1925 in Graford.
Survivors include two sons, Fred Lee Hughes and J. Harold Hughes, both of Abilene; one sister, Beth Craft of Dallas; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Alberta Mae Sims
Alberta Mae Sims, 83, died Monday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 U.S. Hwy 277 South, with the Rev. James Talliaferro officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park.
Mrs. Sims was born in Auburn, Neb., and married Ruben Benson Sims in 1941. She was a homemaker. She moved to Abilene in 1990 from Odessa and was a member of Sherwood Baptist Church in Odessa.
Survivors include one daughter, Becky Davis of Abilene; one son, Richard Sims of Pecos; one sister, Connie Gerdes of Auburn, Neb.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Bula May Davis
TUSCOLA — Bula May Davis, 83, employed by Allsup’s for 14 years until retiring in 1994, died Monday in an Abilene hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Tuscola First Baptist Church with the Revs. Steve Parker and Wayne Heinze officiating. Burial will be in Tuscola Cemetery, directed by Fry-Bartlett Funeral Home.
Mrs. Davis was born in Iowa Park and moved to Hartford, Ark. in 1950. She worked at Wal-Mart in Fort Smith, Ark. until moving to Tuscola in 1971. She was a member of Moro Baptist Church and was the widow of L.H. Davis, whom she married on March 13, 1950 in Greenwood, Ark.
Survivors include one son, Keith Davis of Tuscola; one daughter, Martha Jo Tyler of Humble; one brother, Jerry Waller of Sugarland; two sisters, Irene Brock of Dallas and Jackie Patterson of Ennis; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
