Clyde Alsup
MHMR associate chief executive

BIG SPRING — Clyde J. Alsup, 73, died Sunday at a Midland hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Gary Groves officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Memorial Park.

Mr. Alsup was born in Cisco and graduated from Cisco High School. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He graduated from Texas Tech University with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education and was a teacher, high school principal and insurance agent before becoming a counselor at the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Unit at Big Spring State Hospital. He was associate chief executive officer of West Texas Centers for Mental Health and Mental Retardation. He was a member of Texas Public Employees Association and the national, Texas and Big Spring associations of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors. He was a member of First Christian Church. He married Evelyn Flynt Jopson in 1974 in Carlsbad, N.M.

Survivors include his wife, of Big Spring; one son, Gary Michael Alsup of Amarillo; one stepson, A. Brinton Jopson of Sarasota, Fla.; two brothers, Coleman Lee Alsup of Midlothian and Felix Alsup of Dallas; and one sister, Catherine Fay Alsup of Moriarity, N.M.

Memorials may be made to Cal Farley’s Boys and Girls Ranch, P.O. Box 1890, Amarillo 79174-0001; or First Christian Church Memorial Fund, 911 Goliad, Big Spring 79720.

The family will be at the funeral home from 5-6 p.m. today.

Oma Loper Jones
Foursquare minister

KNOX CITY — Oma Loper Jones, 89, of Garland and formerly of Knox City, died Sunday at a Garland nursing home after a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Foursquare Church with Kathryn Byrd officiating. Burial will be in Knox City Cemetery, directed by Smith Funeral Home.

Mrs. Jones was born in Knox City and was a Foursquare minister, beginning in Colorado. She pastored churches in Rochester, Weinert, Stamford, Knox City and Ponca City, Okla. She moved to Garland from Ponca City and was a member of Foursquare Gospel Church in Garland. She was the widow of Fred Jones.

Survivors include one son, Robert “Bob” Jones of Tennessee; and one daughter, Peggy Hicks of Rowlett.

The family will be at the Kent DeVille home, 105 S.E. 3rd St., today.

Paul R. Strickland
Professional Musician

ARLINGTON — Paul R. Strickland, 41, died Monday in a local hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today in the Parker Funeral Home Chapel in Baird with Dr. Kent Morris officiating.

Mr. Strickland was born in Baird and had lived in the Metroplex area for about three years. He married Roxana Choate on Jan. 3, 1995 in San Angelo. He was a professional musician and a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife of Arlington; three daughters, Kellie Metheny of Weatherford, Stephanie Wells of Wylie, and Lori Wolfe of Sarasota, Fla.; his mother, Ruth Strickland of Baird; one sister, Martha Strickland of Abilene; and one brother, David Strickland of Abilene.

Rebecca Reynolds Cotton
Second generation ranchwoman

SAN ANGELO — Rebecca Reynolds Cotton died Monday.

Services will be at 4 p.m. today in the First Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Ron Sutto and Carl Rohlfs officiating. Burial will be in the Fairmount Cemetery, directed by Johnson’s Funeral Home of San Angelo.

Mrs. Cotton was born in Big Spring and grew up on the Reynolds Ranch in Garden City. She graduated from Garden City High School in 1970, and attended Angelo State University before graduating from Texas Tech University in 1974 with a degree in interior design. She married Jimmy Rex Cotton in Aug., 1979, and lived in Abilene and Fort Worth prior to moving to San Angelo in 1984. She owned and operated ranches in Water Valley and Garden City. She and her family were nominated for the Youth Baseball Family of the Year in 1995 and she served on the board of the Northern Little League Challenger Division. She was a sustaining member of the Junior League of San Angelo and a player on the USTA 4.0 tennis team. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Christopher Reynolds and Jonathan David; her mother, Roberta Reynolds; one brother, Richie Reynolds of Marfa; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Memorials may be made to the Challenger Baseball Program of Northern Little League, 2824 W. Beauregard, San Angelo, TX 76901 or to donor’s favorite charity.

Merle Dingus
Former Postmaster

MUNDAY — Merle Dingus, 94, died Monday in a local nursing center.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in the Johnson Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Carol Crumpton officiating, directed by McCauley-Smith Funeral Home of Munday.

Ms. Dingus was born in Comanche County and moved to Munday in 1925. She was a former postmaster and was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one sister, Rita Longbotham of Littleton, Colo.; one brother, George William Dingus of Pampa; and several nieces and nephews.

Opal Watson
Former Possum Kingdom resident

SNYDER — Opal Watson, 90, died Tuesday in a Snyder hospital.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, at the Highland Cemetery in Iowa Park, directed by McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater.

Mrs. Watson was born in Hubbard and was a graduate of Valley View High School. She was the widow of Ben Watson, whom she married on Oct. 29, 1948 in Kermit. She was a member of the All Denominational Church in Possum Kingdom and a housewife. She had lived in Snyder for the past five years.

Survivors include three sons, Lloyd Knipe of Snyder, Bobby Knipe of Richmond, Va., and Max Knipe of Great Bend, Kan.; nine grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren.

Warren M. Willingham
Former Albany mayor

GRAHAM — Warren M. Willingham, 89, formerly of Albany, died Monday in a Wichita Falls hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, at the Albany First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Douglas Stenberg officiating. Burial will be in the Albany Cemetery, directed by Godfrey-Neese Funeral Home.

Mr. Willingham was born in Cleburne and was a 1929 graduated of Woodson High School. He graduated from Draughon’s Business College in Abilene and played on their basketball team. He married Ozelle Foster on Feb. 28, 1932 in Woodson, Tx. He lived in Breckenridge prior to moving to Albany, where he owned and operated the Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store for many years. He served with the U.S. Army’s 99th Replacement Battalion in England during World War II. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of Moslah Shrine. He was a member of the American Legion and of the Albany First United Methodist Church. He had served as Albany mayor previously.

Survivors include his wife of Graham; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Albany First United Methodist Church or the charity of donor’s choice.

H.R. Stephenson
Retired mechanic

BROWNWOOD — H.R. Stephenson, 81, died Monday in a Bangs nursing home.

Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. today at the Eastlawn Memorial Park with the Rev. J.A. McDaniel officiating, directed by Heartland Funeral Home of Early.

Mr. Stephenson was born in Claude. He was the widower of Peggy L. Godwin Stephenson, whom he married on Jan. 3, 1949 in Panhandle, Tx. He was a retired mechanic and a member of the Faith Baptist Church.

Survivors include, two sons, R.D. “Dennis” Stephenson of Early and Randy K. Stephenson; one daughter, Vicki Lyn Lish of Mason. W.V.; one brother, Raymond Stephenson of Amarillo; two sisters, Annalee Kiser and Cleo Veto, both of Bowie; six grandchildren; one great grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Evellyn Moss Estep
1938 McCaulley High School graduate

ANSON — Evellyn Moss Estep, 78, died Tuesday at an Abilene hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, at the Anson Church of Christ with Roy Stephenson and Pete Lollar officiating. Burial will be in McCaulley Cemetery, directed by Lawrence-Adams Funeral Home of Anson.

Mrs. Estep was born in Wellman and graduated from McCaulley High School in 1938. She was the widow of Alvin B. Estep, whom she married on May 3, 1958 in Big Spring. She lived in Abilene and moved to Anson in 1972. She worked as a secretary for Riley G. Maxwell, Atty., for over 20 years. She was a member of the Anson Church of Christ.

Survivors include one brother, George Moss of Anson; one sister, Ethel Bentley of Anson; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
