Roy Elms
BROWNWOOD - Roy L. Elms died Friday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Martin officiating. Burial will be in Greenleaf Cemetery.
Mr. Elms was born in Brownwood and was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He married Faye Goggans in 1954 in Fort Worth and returned to Brownwood in 1972. He was a retired assistant city manager and was a member of Pecan Valley Kiwanis Club. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, of Brownwood; one son, Richard Elms of Seattle; two daughters, Laura Stickney of Arlington and Jennifer Kerby of Zephyr; one sister, Barbara Massey of Plains; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Memorials may be sent to American Cancer Society, 209 S. Danville, Abilene 79605.
Visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Ada Irene Henderson
COLEMAN - Ada Irene Henderson, 98, of San Antonio and formerly of Coleman, died Thursday in San Antonio.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Reed Justus officiating. Burial will be in Coleman Cemetery.
Ms. Henderson was born in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School, Baylor College in 1922 and Southwest University in 1939. She taught school in Featherston in Coleman County, at West Ward in Coleman, and Hondo and Sonora High schools. She then was an English teacher at Brackenridge High School in San Antonio until retiring in 1966. She was a life member of the San Antonio and Texas Retired Teacher associations, and was president of the San Antonio English Club, Beta chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, and Southwest Genealogical Society. She also was a secretary of Alpha State Delta Kappa Gamma and a regent of the Alamo chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a provisional member of San Antonio, Jamestown Society Inc.; San Antonio Regents Council, Wesleyan Service Guild and National Society of Ladies of the Thistle. She was a member of Coleman First United Methodist Church and attended Travis Park United Methodist Church in San Antonio.
Survivors include one niece, Mary Henderson Ebinger of Schuylkill Haven, Pa.; three great-nieces; three great-great-nephews and five great-great-nieces.
Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Monday in the funeral home.

Nellie Jewel Gober
EARLY - Nellie Jewel Gober, 65, of Lometa and formerly of Brown County, died Friday in an Austin hospital.
Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Monday in Rocky Creek Cemetery with the Rev. Darrell Williams officiating, directed by Heartland Funeral Home.
Mrs. Gober was born in San Antonio and moved to Lometa in 1965. She married Billy Dee Gober in 1968 and was a homemaker. She was a Pentecostal.
Survivors include her husband, of Lometa; one son, B.J. Gober of Austin; one daughter, Linda Cline of San Saba; one brother, Larry Thomas of Tyler; one half-brother, Randy Thomas of San Antonio; one sister, Betty Wintzel of Harper; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Matilda Barrera
Matilda R. Barrera, 52, of Abilene died Saturday at a local hospital.
Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joseph Uecker officiating. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Vincent Pallotti Catholic Church with the Rev. Uecker officiating. Burial will be in Abilene City Cemetery.
Mrs. Barrera was born in Abilene and was a retired daycare nurse. She was a member of St. Vincent Pallotti Catholic Church.
Survivors include three sons, Adrian Barrera, Alden Barrera and Arnold Barrera, all of Abilene; one daughter, Andrea Barrera of Abilene; two brothers and two sisters. Mary Jane Furrh

Mary Jane Furrh, 97, formerly of Stamford, died Sunday at an Abilene hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Rev. James Pitts officiating. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. in Highland Memorial Cemetery in Stamford, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
Mrs. Furrh was born in Waxahachie, where she attended school. She was an artist and poet and owned Mary Jane's Custom Designed Blouses. She moved to Abilene from Stamford in 1987. She was a homemaker and a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. She married L.S. "Boze" Furrh in 1920 in Hereford; he preceded her in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Keith Dodd Bergquist of Abilene and Jean Sgamba of Martinez, Calif.; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Memorial Fund, 4515 S. 14th, Abilene 79605.
The family will be at the funeral home from 5-7 p.m. today.

J. Arnold Marshall
BIG SPRING - J. Arnold Marshall, 80, former mayor and a longtime Big Spring resident, died Saturday.
Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Wayne Day and Dr. Ed Williamson officiating. Private graveside services will be in Trinity Memorial Park, directed by Myers & Smith Funeral Home.
Mr. Marshall was born in Loraine and attended Hardin-Simmons University. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He moved to Big Spring in 1940 where he worked for Cosden Petroleum. He joined H.W. Smith Transport Co. in 1957, eventually becoming president and owner, and owned two other businesses until selling all three in 1977. He was on the city council for six years and mayor from 1966-72. He was a Municipal Court judge and president of U.S. Highway 87 Association. He was a past president of the Chamber of Commerce, YMCA, American Business Club and Howard County Fair Association and a member of International YMCA Council. He was active with Boy Scouts, United Way and American Red Cross, among other activities. He was a member of First United Methodist Church for more than 50 years.
Survivors include his wife, Rachel Ford "Peggy" Marshall of Big Spring; one daughter, Nancy Marshall of Dallas; one sister, Ruby Jo (Mrs. W. Kenneth) Day of Abilene; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Leslie Cory
ANSON - Leslie Cory, 84, the "watermelon king of Jones County," died Saturday at a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Loren Gardner and James Smith officiating. Burial will be in Neinda Cemetery, directed by Lawrence-Adams Funeral Home.
Mr. Cory was born at Boyd's Chapel and was a retired farmer. He was a Methodist. He married Mary Alice Mayfield in 1936 in Stamford.
Survivors include his wife, of Anson; one son, Doug Cory of New Braunfels; two sisters, Lillian Tabb of Anson and Eva Lee Raines of Bakersfield, Calif.; six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
The family will be at the home of Steve and Melinda Murphy, four miles north of Hawley on Hwy. 277.

Virginia 'Sturzi' Van Trease
LEWISVILLE - Virginia "Sturzi" Van Trease, 82, died Friday at a Dallas hospital.
Services were Sunday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Stephen G. Hatfield and the Rev. David Williams officiating. Burial was in Burleson Memorial Park in Burleson, directed by Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home.
Mrs. Van Trease was born in Burleson and grew up in Fort Worth. She lived in Deer Park prior to her retirement, when she moved to Clyde. She was Harris County Precinct Judge from 1943-1954 and taught school in Deer Park and Pasadena from 1957-1965. She was a private art teacher and taught senior citizens classes in Deer Park until 1978. She was a member and president of Alpha Omicron chapter, Beta Sigma Phi for eight years. She was chairman of the board of Gulf Coast Art Society and a member of the National League of American Pen Women and Order of Eastern Star. She married William Frank Van Trease in 1934 in Arlington.
Survivors include her husband, of Clyde; one son, Garry Van Trease of Flower Mound; two sisters, Bebe Gilbreath and Theoanne Keys, both of Clyde; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the West Texas Rehabilitation Center in Abilene.

Virgia Nelson
BROWNWOOD - Virgia Nelson, 90, died Sunday at a Haltom City convalescent center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with Alvis Fisher officiating. Burial will be in Greenleaf Cemetery.
Mrs. Nelson was born in Duncan, Okla., and had lived in Haltom City for three years. She was a longtime member of Brady Avenue Church of Christ. She married Olaf Nelson in 1926 in Vernon; he preceded her in death.
Survivors include one daughter, LaJuan (Mrs. Worth) Lancaster of Keller; two grandsons and four great-grandchildren.
