Sister Mary Peter Tremonte
Sister Mary Peter Tremonte, O.P., well-known liturgical artist whose works are featured at Holy Family Catholic Church, died Tuesday in San Antonio after a brief illness.
The sculptor and liturgical designer served the church through her art for 40 years. While chairman of the art department at Dominican College in Houston she assisted many new and renovating churches to adopt the liturgical reforms that came from Vatican Council II.
One of those is the Holy Family parish in Abilene, which has an estimated $175,000 worth of her works. She designed and executed a bronze "corpus" for the crucifix in the sanctuary and a six-foot bronze tabernacle for the blessed sacrament. She also designed and sculpted the larger-than-life bronze of the Holy Family which stands at the entrance to the church. The church's stained glass windows were also designed by Sister Mary Peter.
Most than 50 churches in Texas have pieces of her work, much of it cast in Italy.
A native of Port Arthur, she entered the convent at age 19 when she joined the Dominicans. She was assigned to teach other gifted artists in 1950 and later founded a special program for Dominican students to study with Florentine artists in Italy. In 1979, she earned a master's degree in fine arts from the University of Texas at Austin.
She will be buried today at the Dominican Motherhouse in Houston.
