Olivia Ann Jones
AMARILLO - Olivia Ann Jones, 69, formerly of the Big Country, died Tuesday.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today in Memorial Park Cemetery in Vega with Dr. Stan Coffey and the Rev. Dale Bigham officiating, directed by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.
Mrs. Jones was born in Brownwood and was a longtime Abilene resident. She worked as a supervisor of medical office personnel at the Abilene State School. She moved to Amarillo in 1996 and was a member of San Jacinto Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, James Reeves and Gary Jones, both of Amarillo; one daughter, Kathy Tuebner of Ore City; one sister, Frances Steele of Fort Worth; one brother, Elmer Musick; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

William Thornton Potter
BEAVER, Okla. - William Thornton Potter, 81, of Abilene and formerly of Beaver, died Saturday.
Services were held Tuesday in Beaver First Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Sherrill officiating. Burial was in Pioneer Cemetery, directed by Clark Funeral Service.
Mr. Potter was born near Forgan, Okla., and was a longtime Beaver resident. He graduated from Greenough Consolidated School and Panhandle State University. He started teaching school in Liberal, Kan., in 1939 and worked in an aeronautical parts plant in Wichita, Kan., during World War II. He taught school in Garrett, Okla., and then was an elementary principal in Forgan for 21 years before retiring. He was a farmer and rancher, and moved to Abilene in 1996. He was a deacon at Beaver First Baptist Church for many years and was the widower of Thelma Mills Potter, whom he married in 1939.
Survivors include three children, Judy Hancock of Abilene, Nancy Hawk of Amarillo and Bill Potter of Shamrock; three sisters, Reta Venable of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Letha Metheny of WaKeeney, Kan., and Velma Wakefield Gaona of Forgan, Okla.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mattie Smith
COLEMAN - Mattie E. (Mrs. Frank) Smith, 91, of Georgetown and formerly of Coleman, died Monday in a Georgetown nursing home.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Coleman City Cemetery with Allen Harper officiating, directed by Walker Funeral Home.
Mrs. Smith was born in Morefield, Ark., and was a longtime Coleman resident. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Central Baptist Church in Coleman and was the widow of Frank Smith, whom she married in 1924 in Slaton.
Survivors include two daughters, Louise McCrary of Hutto and Bonnie Harper of Weatherford; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to a favorite charity.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Leona Carter
HAMLIN - Leona Carter, 88, died Tuesday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Hamlin First Baptist Church with the Revs. Tracy Watson and Howard Jones officiating. Burial will be in Hamlin East Cemetery, directed by Foster-Adams Funeral Home.
Mrs. Carter was born in Denton County and moved to Jones County as a child. She was a homemaker. She was a member of First Baptist Church and was the widow of Weldon H. Carter, whom she married in 1927 in Jones County.
Survivors include one daughter, June Gregory of Hamlin; two sons, Joe Wayne Carter of Hamlin and Bob Carter of Levelland; three sisters, Grace Hart and Juanita Jenkins, both of Lubbock, and Marguerite Richardson of Levelland; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Albert Francis Ruth
COLORADO CITY - Albert Francis Ruth, 85, died Monday in Midland.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Kiker-Seale Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. M.R. Thompson and Mike Foster officiating. Burial will be in Colorado City Cemetery.
Mr. Ruth was born in Menna, Okla., and married Pearl Gladys Ayers in 1931 in DeQueen, Ark. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and moved to Colorado City in 1945. He worked for Col-Tex Refinery for 28 years before retiring and then operated the Whiteway Motel for many years. He was a past master of Mitchell Masonic Lodge 563 and was a member of York Rite, Scottish Rite, Shriners, Order of the Eastern Star and First Assembly of God.
Survivors include his wife, of Colorado City; one daughter, Faye Marcom of Midland; two sons, Virgil Ruth Sr. of Colorado City and Jimmy Ruth of Loraine; two sisters, Marie Ford of Salisaw, Okla. and Velma Fallis of Killeen; three brothers, Henry Ruth and James Ruth, both of DeQueen, Ark., and Lee Ruth of Locksburg, Ark.; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Gurtha Followwill Smith
MUNDAY - Gurtha Followwill Smith, 87, of Boulder, Colo., and formerly of Munday, died Sunday in Boulder.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Gillespie Baptist Church with the Rev. Dorman Followwill Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Gillespie Cemetery, directed by McCauley-Smith Funeral Home.
Mrs. Smith was born in Poolville and moved to Munday in 1924. She was a homemaker and moved to Boulder, Colo. in 1987. She was a member of Gillespie Baptist Church and was the widow of Henry Dee Followwill, whom she married in 1924 in Poolville; and B.E. Smith, whom she married in 1977 in Munday.
Survivors include one son, Dorman Followwill of Boulder, Colo.; two brothers, Elvie Reeves of Odessa and Herman Reeves of Anson; one sister, Ruby Douglass of Littlefield; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to a favorite charity.
The family will be at the Winters Matthews home in Munday.

Katherine Swanson
COLORADO CITY - Katherine Swanson, 70, died Monday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Kiker-Seale Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bentley Gwen officiating. Burial will be in Colorado City Cemetery.
Mrs. Swanson was born in Idalou and was a longtime Colorado City resident. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Dyann Metzger of New York; one son, Elvin Britton of Midland; two brothers, Odis Mahan of Oklahoma and Weldon Mahan of Lake Colorado City; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

J.P. Stevens
HALE CENTER - J.P. Stevens, 87, formerly of Trent, died Tuesday in a Lubbock hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Hale Center First United Methodist Church with Silas Short officiating. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. in Rose Hill Cemetery in Merkel, directed by Freeman Funeral Home.
Mr. Stevens was born in Trent, where he attended school, and moved to Plainview in 1943. He was a farmer and operated Steven's Trucking in Plainview until retiring in 1972. He moved to Hale Center in 1977 and was the widower of Dorothy Lorraine Dodson Stevens, whom he married in 1930 in Trent. He married Essie Ware in 1992 in Plainview and was a charter member of the Hale Center Senior Citizens Association. He helped start the Hale County Farm and Ranch Museum and also was a member of Woodmen of the World and Trent First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, of Hale Center; two daughters, Frances Peterson of Mesa, Ariz., and Linda Hall of Baku, Azerbaijan; four stepsons, Jim Ware of Rowlett, David Ware of Amarillo, Ronnie Ware of Alamogordo, N.M., and Randy Ware of Plainview; one stepdaughter, Gail Cox of Plainview; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 12 step grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.

Dortha Louise 'Momma Dot' Thompson
BUSBY - Dortha Louise "Momma Dot" Thompson, 61, lifelong Fisher County resident, died Monday in an Abilene hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Roby First Baptist Church with the Rev. Kerry Peacock officiating. Burial will be in Roby Cemetery, directed by McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater.
Mrs. Thompson was born in Loraine and married Bobby Thompson in 1953 in Busby. She worked in the furniture upholstery business and as a painter. She was known as the "Stump Lady" for decorating the tree stump near the intersection of the Roby and Longworth highways during the holiday season. She was a member of Roby First Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, of Busby; two sons, Shelby Thompson of Anson and Shalon Thompson of Busby; three daughters, Sharla Evans, Sheree Hartman and Shelly Scherwitz, all of Busby; two brothers, Derwayne Rasco of Roby and Doyle Rasco of Hobbs; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
