Sue Pannell

MERKEL - Marion Sue Pannell, 65, died Friday in Merkel.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Merkel Church of Christ with Mark Whitmire officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, directed by Starbuck Funeral Home.

Mrs. Pannell was born in Huntsville, Ala., and graduated from Phillips High School in Birmingham, Ala. in 1948. She attended Howard College in Birmingham and was a honorary member of Alpha Epsilon Delta, a pre-med fraternity. She moved to Merkel in 1981. She worked as a bookkeeper for the West Central Texas Municipal Water District before retiring in 1994. She had been a judge for The International Cat Association since 1986, and was a member of Big Country Cat Fanciers and the Church of Christ. She was the widow of Joseph Boyd Pannell, whom she married in 1950 in Birmingham, Ala.

Survivors include one son, Joe Pannell Jr. of Tullahoma, Tenn.; two daughters, Glenda Stephens of Merkel and Becky Whisenhunt-Pursley of Potosi; one sister, Jacklyn Marsh of Odenville, Ala.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be sent to Merkel Cemetery Association, 201 Edwards, Merkel 79536.

Esther Plank

CANYON - Esther L. Plank, 84, formerly of Abilene, died Saturday in an Amarillo hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Canyon First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Richard Bales and Kevin Deckard officiating. Burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery, directed by Brooks Funeral Directors.

Ms. Plank was born in Rogers, Ark., and graduated from Pampa High School in 1930. She taught school in Deal and White Deer, and graduated from West Texas Teachers College and Colorado State College in Greeley, Colo. She was a school teacher in Odessa and Santa Monica, Calif. prior to World War II, when she worked for the U.S. Navy. She helped organize the public school system of Japan and was recognized for her efforts with a U.S. Presidential Citation and commendation from the Japanese government. She later was a district school supervisor for the state of New Jersey and earned her doctorate from Columbia University in New York City.

She was a coordinator for the Head-Start Program, and taught at Arizona University, the University of Houston, Southwest Missouri State University and Hardin-Simmons University before retiring. She was active in the Randall County Republican Party and received the party's Outstanding Volunteer Award. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Delta Kappa Gamma, Panhandle Plains Historical Society and Commission, American Association of University Women, Canyon Garden Club and First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one sister, Betty Driess of Houston; one brother, W. Jay Plank of Hillsborough, Calif.; and 16 nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be sent to First United Methodist Church, 1818 4th Ave., Canyon 79015; or John Plank Memorial Scholarship Fund at West Texas A&M University, 2501 4th Ave., Canyon 79015.

Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Monday in the funeral home, and in the church after the service.

Floyd Ray 'Jack' Jones

LUEDERS - Floyd Ray "Jack" Jones, 74, Lueders postmaster from 1964-92, died Saturday in Lueders.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Anson First Baptist Church with the Revs. Oscar Fannin and Mark Chadwick officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Stamford, directed by Lawrence-Adams Funeral Home of Anson.

Mr. Jones was born in Haskell County and graduated from Rule High School in 1941. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He married Robbye Jeter in 1944 in Rule and, for many years, lived in Big Spring, where he worked in the construction business. He moved to Lueders in 1961 from Cisco and owned Jones Hardware in Lueders. He was a farmer and rancher. He was a past president of the Lueders Lions Club and was club secretary for more than 20 years. He also was past president of the West Texas Association of Odd Fellows and Rebekahs, and was secretary of the Texas branch of National League of Postmasters for five years. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, of Lueders; two sons, Douglas W. Jones of Duncan, Okla., and Donald R. Jones of Odessa; one daughter, Gayle Roberts of Piedmont, Okla.; two brothers, Bill Jones of Pilot Point and Davis Jones of Stamford; one sister, Bernice Terrell of Garland; five grandchildren; three step grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to West Texas Rehabilitation Center, 4601 Hartford, Abilene 79605; Hospice of the Big Country, 3113 Oldham Lane, Abilene 79602; or a favorite charity.

Betty Jean Fox Tuttle

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. - Betty Jean Fox Tuttle, 39, formerly of Eastland County, died Thursday at her home after a sudden illness.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Floral Haven Funeral Home Chapel in Tulsa, Okla. Burial will be in Garden of Serenity Cemetery in Tulsa.

Mrs. Tuttle was born in Ranger and attended school in Olden. She married Vance Tuttle Jr. in 1982 in Eastland and was a homemaker. She was a Baptist.

Survivors include her husband, of Broken Arrow; three daughters, Jodie Lynn Tuttle, Sarah Beth Tuttle and Pamela Jean Tuttle, all of Broken Arrow; one son, Aaron James Tuttle of Broken Arrow; her parents, H.C. "Blackie" and Bonnie Fox of Olden; two sisters, JoAnn Fox Knight of Eastland and Bonnie Fox Stewart of Ranger; four brothers, Clifford Fox of Big Spring, Kenneth Fox of Olden, Billy Fox of Houston and Danny Fox of Euless; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Joe Dobson

COLEMAN - Joe Dobson, 93, named Coleman County Rural Citizen of the Year in 1976 by the Chamber of Commerce, died Friday in Coleman.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jeff Robinett officiating. Burial will be in Coleman City Cemetery, directed by Walker Funeral Home.

Mr. Dobson was born in Grayson County and lived in the Midland area from 1926-45. He ranched in Coleman County for many years before retiring and was a life director of the West Texas Boys Ranch and Sheep and Goat Raisers Association. He also was an area director of the Screw Worm Eradication Program. He was a Rotarian and was a member of the Coleman Rodeo Association, Double C Riding Club and Coleman Masonic Lodge. He was a member and teacher in the Downtown Sunday School Class and was an elder at First Presbyterian Church. He was the widower of Ila Dillard Dobson, whom he married in 1925.

Survivors include one daughter, Martha Joe Griffis of Coleman; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to First Presbyterian Church in Coleman and West Texas Boys Ranch in San Angelo.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Ethel Clawson

WESTBROOK - Ethel Clawson, 95, died Friday in a Colorado City hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Westbrook First Baptist Church with the Revs. Jim Mosley and Bob Manning officiating. Burial will be in Westbrook Cemetery, directed by Kiker-Seale Funeral Home of Colorado City.

Mrs. Clawson was born in Van Zandt County and was a homemaker. She moved to Westbrook in 1920. She was a member of First Baptist Church and was the widow of P.E. Clawson, whom she married in 1918 in Mount Vernon.

Survivors include five daughters, Drucilla Board and Lillian Sullivan, both of Westbrook, Louise Miller of Oklahoma City, Sybil Sparks of Wills Point and LaRue Findeisen of Corpus Christi; three sons, C.E. Clawson of Corpus Christi, J.C. Clawson of Guy, Ark., and Dwayne Clawson of Coahoma; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Westbrook First Baptist Church or a favorite charity.

Amos Johnson

EASTLAND - Amos L. Johnson, 89, formerly of Coleman, died Friday in a local hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel in Coleman with the Rev. Ken Treadwell officiating. Burial will be in Coleman Cemetery.

Mr. Johnson was born in Mills County and attended school in Coleman County. He farmed for several years and moved to Odessa in 1952. He worked for the city of Odessa before retiring in 1974 and returned to Coleman in 1975. He moved to Eastland in 1990. He was a Baptist and was the widower of Rosa Bell Frances Johnson, whom he married in 1928.

Survivors include three daughters, Rosa Lee Deason of Cross Plains, Dee Jarvis of Eastland and Virginia Dee Gookins of Tulsa, Okla.; three sons, Hubert Johnson of Conroe, and Roy Johnson and Claud Johnson, both of Eastland; one brother, Bedford Johnson of Haltom City; 29 grandchildren; and many great grandchildren.

O.K. 'Kelley' Thompson

AVOCA - O.K. "Kelley" Thompson, 75, died Friday in an Abilene hospital.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Avoca Methodist Church with the Rev. Ron Strickland officiating. Burial will be in Springcreek Cemetery, directed by Tankersley Funeral Home of Stamford.

Mr. Thompson was born in Coleman County and married Betty Lou Crawford in 1942 in Avoca. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a farmer. He was a member of Avoca Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, of Avoca; two sons, Kelley Thompson Jr. of Guthrie and Rancy Thompson of Fort Worth; three grandchildren; two step grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.

Eddie Piscacek

BROWNWOOD - Eddie E. Piscacek, 84, died Friday at his home after a sudden illness.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Avenue D Baptist Church with Charlie Parrish and R.J. Elkins officiating. Burial will be in Greenleaf Cemetery, directed by Heartland Funeral Home of Early.

Mr. Piscacek was born in West, Texas, and attended school in Smithville. He was a longtime Brownwood resident. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and worked as a truck driver for White Mines for many years. He also was a carpenter. He married Edith Moore in 1983 in Brownwood and was a member of Avenue D Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, of Brownwood; one stepson, Kenneth Blanton of Brownwood; one stepdaughter, Elizabeth "Beth" Beall of Sherman; and one brother, Charlie Piscacek of Waco.
