Hans 'John' Adam
MERKEL - Hans J. "John" Adam, 57, of Lubbock, whose wife grew up in Merkel, died Wednesday at his home.
Services were held Friday in Sunset Church of Christ in Lubbock with Dan Rouse and Frankie McKinney officiating. Graveside services with military honors will be at 10 a.m. today in Rose Hill Cemetery with Joe Gregory officiating, directed by Starbuck Funeral Home.
Mr. Adam was born in Saarbruecken, Germany, and moved to the United States in 1951. He attended Texas A&M University and served with the U.S. Army and Air Force. He was a Vietnam War veteran. He operated a high performance machine shop in College Station and worked for Walker Mufflers for 14 years. He co-started Matthew Adam Discount Distributing Inc., an automotive parts wholesale warehouse, in 1987. He married Ghronda Tarpley in 1994 in Stith in Jones County. He was a director of Texas World Speedway in College Station and was a member of Hillcrest Country Club and Sunset Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, of Lubbock; one son, Richard Ray Patke of Grand Prairie; two daughters, Johnna Arden of Bryan and Deidra Ann Johnson of Livingston; his mother, Gertrude Krise of Bryan; one sister, Margaret Mains of San Antonio and Wichita, Kan.; one brother, Klaus Michael Adam of Killeen; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held today from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Merkel Church of Christ Family Life Center.

Nettie Lou Rose Switzer
BROWNWOOD - Nettie Lou Rose Switzer, 79, of Lake Brownwood, died Thursday in a local hospital.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Blanket Cemetery with Dr. Dan Chapman officiating, directed by Heartland Funeral Home of Early.
Mrs. Switzer was born in Ringling, Okla., and attended school in Oklahoma. She was a homemaker and was the widow of Burl Rose. She married G.W. Switzer in 1982 in Idalou. She moved to Lake Brownwood in 1986 from Idalou and was a member of Trinity Chapel in Early.
Survivors include her husband, of Lake Brownwood; three sons, Don Rose of Midland, Gale Rose of Spring Branch and Ronnie Rose of Hutto; one daughter, Jaretha Wood of Round Rock; two brothers, Homer Choate and Ollie Choate, both of Oklahoma City; two sisters, Alice Wigham and Florence Carmichle, both of Idalou; 21 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Susie Anna Emfinger
MERKEL - Susie Anna Emfinger, 84, died Friday in Abilene.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday in Merkel Church of Christ with Mark Whitmire and Jerry Russell officiating. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland, directed by Starbuck Funeral Home.
Mrs. Emfinger was born in Clovis, N.M., and grew up in Wingate and Shep. She worked for Midland Oil Scouts as a sample cut technician from 1951-69 and was a homemaker. She lived in Ruidoso, N.M. before returning to Merkel in 1994. She was a member of the Church of Christ and was the widow of Elmer Jefferson Emfinger, whom she married in 1928 in Ballinger.
Survivors include one son, Roy Emfinger of Merkel; one daughter, Betty Boren of Houston; two brothers, Elmer Thelston Crawford of Dallas and O.C. Crawford Jr. of Brownwood; three sisters, Christine Brown of Lubbock, Lula Mae Cheek of Roanoke and Mittie Ella Morrell of Brownwood; six grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Norine Hosie Swindell
COLORADO CITY - Norine Hosie Swindell, 94, died Friday in a local nursing home.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. Arrangements were made by Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.
Mrs. Swindell was born in Toyah and was a retired chiropractor. She was the widow of James F. Rogers and Lum Swindell.
Survivors include one nephew, John C. Hosey of Abion, Pa.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Bennie Hobbs
MERKEL - Bennie L. Hobbs, 77, of the Merkel area, died Thursday in Abilene.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Merkel Church of Christ with Mark Whitmire officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, directed by Starbuck Funeral Home.
Mr. Hobbs was born in Merkel and attended school in Warren and Merkel. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. He married Marie Holt in 1954 in Bentonville, Ark., and was a farmer and rancher. He served on the Hodges Gin and Sun Water boards, and was a retired elder of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Ronald Hobbs of Merkel; one daughter, Debbie Hobbs of Merkel; two sisters, Lyla Chancey of Richardson and Ollie Fowler of Merkel; and four grandchildren.

Billie Ruth Fleming
CISCO - Billie Ruth Fleming, 64, co-owner and operator of the Twins Beauty Shop for many years, died Thursday in an Eastland hospital after a short illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Chambers-Wilcox Funeral Directors Chapel with the Revs. Gary Turner and Bob Ferguson officiating. Burial will be in Scranton Cemetery.
Miss Fleming was born in Stanton and moved to Cisco in 1949. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, her twin, Millie Sue Fleming of Cisco and Patty Killough of Waco; and three brothers, Morgan Fleming of Cisco, Alton Fleming of Clyde and L.J. Fleming of Brownwood.

Esther Sabollos
Esther Sabollos, 31, of Lubbock and formerly of Abilene, died Thursday in a Lubbock hospital.
A prayer service will be at 6:30 p.m. today in North's Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, 242 Orange. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the funeral home with Jesse Gonzales officiating. Burial will be in Oddfellows Cemetery.
Mrs. Sabollos was born in Abilene and attended Abilene High School. She was a homemaker and moved to Lubbock in 1994. She was a Pentecostal.
Survivors include two sons, Samuel Sabollos and Carlos Sabollos, both of Abilene; one daughter, Missy Marie Sabollos of Lubbock; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Gonzales Jr. of Abilene; one sister, Teresa Gonzales of Abilene; four brothers, Edward Gonzales III, David Gonzales and Elijah Gonzales, all of Abilene, and Gabriel Gonzales of Big Spring.
The family will be at 1901 Park Ave.

Annie Bunch Smith
Annie Bunch Smith, 79, formerly of Franklin, Tenn., died Friday in a local hospital.
Services will be held at a later date in Epworth Methodist Church in Franklin, Tenn. Burial will be in Hatcher Family Cemetery in Franklin, directed by Williamson Memorial Funeral Home of Franklin. Local arrangements were made by Allen-Korzenewski Funeral Home, 1443 N. 2nd.
Mrs. Smith was born in Franklin, Tenn., and served as a pharmacist's mate with the U.S. Navy WAVES. She was an interpreter for the deaf at First Baptist Church in Sanford, Fla. She also was a church pianist and wrote more than 100 hymns and songs. She lived in Mayhill, N.M., for more than 25 years and moved to Roswell, N.M., in 1995 and Abilene in 1997.
Survivors include her husband, O.L. Smith of Artesia, N.M.; one daughter, Marianne Kwiecinski of Abilene; and two sisters, Sarah Sherrod Noble and Minerva Alexander, both of Franklin, Tenn.

Margaret LaVerne Grace
Margaret LaVerne Grace, 83, of Corpus Christi and formerly of Abilene and Moran, died Friday in Corpus Christi.
Services were held Saturday in Seaside Funeral Home Chapel in Corpus Christi. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday in Moran Cemetery with the Rev. H.B. Terry Jr. officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
Miss Grace was born in Callahan County and graduated from Moran High School. She attended Tarleton State College in Stephenville. She worked for West Texas Utilities for 43 years and started her career in 1935 as a part-time cashier in the Moran office. She was a cashier and bookkeeper in the Anson office for a year before transferring to Stamford in 1937. She moved to Abilene in 1946 and was a treasury department secretary in the company's general office. She became a company assistant in 1973 and three years later, earned the role of assistant treasurer, a position she held until retiring in 1978. She was a member of Abilene Secretaries Association, West Texas Organ Club in Abilene and University Baptist Church. She moved to Corpus Christi in 1985. She attended Corpus Christi First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Euzelian Sunday School Class.
There are no known immediate survivors.
Memorials may be sent to a favorite charity.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.

Bessie Long
Bessie M. Long, 85, died Saturday at her home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory, with Dr. Eddie Sharp officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park.
Mrs. Long was born in Tuxedo and moved to Abilene in 1967 from Sweetwater. She worked at Sears and Roebuck in Sweetwater for many years. She was a retired practical nurse and was active with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. She was a member of University Church of Christ and was the widow of W.H. "Buster" Long.
Survivors include one son, Jerry Long of Oak Creek Lake; one daughter, Lynda Bruner of Abilene; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one niece.
Visitation will be from 3:30-5 p.m. today in the funeral home.
