George Brown Sr.
CISCO - George W. Brown Sr., 68, died Wednesday in an Abilene hospital.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Kimbrough Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gary Turner officiating.
Mr. Brown was born in Cisco and retired from the U.S. Navy after working as a cook on submarines during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include three sons, Leslie A. Brown of Port Arthur, George W. Brown Jr. of Houston and Mark Brown of San Diego; three daughters, Suezette Moody of Sabine Pass, Vanessa L. Brown of Gulfport, Miss., and Puanani Brown of San Francisco; three brothers, Lawson Brown of Marion, Ohio, Franklin R. Brown of New Orleans and Richard Paul Brown of Denver; one sister, Mary Elizabeth Girardi of Denver; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Gladys Penn
BROWNWOOD - Gladys Penn, 87, lifelong Brown County resident, died Monday in Seguin.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel with Paul McClung officiating. Burial will be in Greenleaf Cemetery.
Mrs. Penn was born in Brown County and was a homemaker. She was a member of Fourth and Stewart Church of Christ and was the widow of Calbert A. Penn Sr., whom she married in 1928 in Brookesmith.
Survivors include two sons, Johnnie Jo Penn Sr. of Snyder and Calbert A. Penn Jr. of Sweetwater; two daughters, Emma Jean Neal of Kingsbury and Yvonne Taylor of Brownwood; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

Henry Cornett
COLEMAN - Henry Cornett, 88, died Monday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Concho Baptist Church with Dr. Charles Sheffield officiating. Burial will be in Bangs Cemetery, directed by Walker Funeral Home.
Mr. Cornett was born in Palo Pinto County and lived most of his life in Coleman County. He served with the U.S. Army's Combat Engineers during World War II and worked as a laborer. He was a Pentecostal.
Survivors include one sister, Mary Griffin of Coleman.

Betty Brown
STEPHENVILLE - Betty Brown, 40, died Monday in a Fort Worth hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Stephenville Funeral Home Chapel with Arthur Smith and Bill Fee officiating. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. in Oakwood Cemetery in Cisco.
Mrs. Brown was born in Lamb County and married Wayne Brown in 1980 in Eastland County. She moved to Stephenville in 1985 and worked as a manager for Perry Brothers. She was a member of Green Acres Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, of Stephenville; one daughter, Becky Brown of Stephenville; her mother, Colleen Pointer of Cisco; three brothers, Gary Pointer of Lubbock, Larry Pointer of Odessa and Barry Pointer of North Richland Hills; and two sisters, Linda Wade of Cisco and Billie Nye of Boise, Idaho.

Margarita Hernandez Luera
COLORADO CITY - Margarita Hernandez Luera, 74, died Tuesday at her home.
Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. today in Kiker-Seale Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in St. Ann's Catholic Church with the Rev. Ray Wilhelm officiating. Burial will be in Colorado City Cemetery.
Mrs. Luera was born in Bastrop and moved to Colorado City in 1939. She was a homemaker and was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband, Santiago Luera of Colorado City; five daughters, Minnie Gomez, Anita Martinez and Amelia Espinoza, all of Colorado City, Dorothy Vanegas of Hamilton, Miss., and Delores Contreras of San Angelo; four sons, Frank Luera and Lupe Luera, both of Colorado City, Jimmy Luera of Dalhart and David Luera of Odessa; three sisters, Estephana Garcia and Dominga Espinoza, both of Colorado City, and Aurelia Lopez of McFarland, Calif.; 27 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Vesta Loraine Harrison
STAMFORD - Vesta Loraine Harrison, 90, died Monday in a local nursing home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. John's United Methodist Church with Dr. Phil McClendon officiating. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Cemetery, directed by Tankersley Funeral Home.
Mrs. Harrison was born in Valera in Coleman County and moved to the Stamford area as a child. She started a school teaching career at age 16 at the Bunker Hill School in Jones County and later retired. She married Robert L. Harrison Sr. in 1932 and was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son, Robert L. Harrison Jr. of Stamford; one daughter, Sarah Grubb of Norman, Okla.; three sisters, Laverne Elliott of Sturgis, S.D., Lavonne Carroll of Hot Springs Village, Ark., and Vera Angell of Houston; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Perry Cunningham
BROWNWOOD - Perry Cunningham, 45, died Monday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Greater Faith Community Church with the Rev. Aaron Blake officiating. Burial will be in Greenleaf Cemetery, directed by Heartland Funeral Home of Early.
Mr. Cunningham was born in Los Angeles and worked as a relief supervisor in laundry service at Brownwood Regional Medical Center.
Survivors include his wife, Annie Cunningham of Brownwood; one daughter, LaTasha Richard of Brownwood; two sons, Frederick Green and Keven Green, both of Dallas; his parents, James and Violet Cunningham of Paris, Calif.; four brothers, Charles Cunningham of Las Cruces, N.M., and James Cunningham Jr., Gary Cunningham and Michael Cunningham, all of San Bernardino, Calif.; four sisters, Betty Cunningham of Florida, Shirley Cunningham of Oakland, Calif., and Phyllis Cunningham and Lisa Cunningham, both of San Bernardino, Calif.; and six grandchildren.

Velma Bennett Reiff
Velma Bennett Reiff, 88, retired assistant professor of English at Hardin-Simmons University and widow of an HSU president, died Tuesday in a local nursing home.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Abilene First Baptist Church with Drs. Phil Christopher and Bill Bruster officiating. Private graveside services will be held, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
Mrs. Reiff was born in Howe, Okla., and graduated from Central High School in Oklahoma City in 1926, Oklahoma Baptist University in 1932 and Hardin-Simmons University in 1964. She was an English teacher in Spiro, Okla. before marrying Dr. Evan A. Reiff in 1934 in Spiro. She lived in Kansas, Pennsylvania and South Dakota before moving to Abilene in 1953, when her husband was named HSU president. Following her husband's death, she taught English at HSU for 15 years until retiring in 1977. She became a volunteer Baptist missionary in Lebanon the next year and taught English in the Baptist High School. Since that time, she was a teacher for International Students in Abilene, teaching English as a second language.
In 1974, she was named Piper Professor of the Year at HSU and, in 1979, was awarded an honorary doctorate degree by HSU. She was recognized in 1990 by Oklahoma Baptist University with a Profile in Excellence Award, given annually to an alumnus who demonstrated excellence in her profession or life service.
She was a former member of American Association of University Women and Abilene Woman's Club, and the Majestic Sounds Senior Adult Choir at First Baptist Church. She was a past president of Women's Missionary Union, a Sunday school teacher for many years, and served on the church's budget and pastor search committees.
Survivors include one daughter, Evangeline "Vangie" Newman of Abilene; two sons, G. Fred Reiff of Abilene and John D. Reiff of Greeneville, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to Drs. Evan Allard and Velma Bennett Reiff Endowed Presidential Scholarship, Hardin-Simmons University Development Office, Box 16100, Abilene 79698.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Alphia Massey
BALLINGER - Alphia D. Massey, 83, of Abilene, Runnels County native, died Tuesday in Abilene.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today in Old Runnels Cemetery with David Wells officiating, directed by Rains-Seale Funeral Home.
Ms. Massey worked as a nurse's aide at the MHMR-Carlsbad Sanitorium.
Survivors include one son, Don Winchester of Abilene; one brother, Dawson Drake of San Angelo; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

James Fillmon
MIDLAND - James W. Fillmon, 77, formerly of Abilene, died Wednesday.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Elmwood Memorial Park in Abilene with Bob Porterfield officiating, directed by Pipkin Funeral Home.
Mr. Fillmon was born in Abilene and served with the U.S. Army in Italy and southern France during World War II. He worked as a roofer for Lydick-Hooks Roofing Co. in Abilene and Midland, and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7208.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Fillmon of Midland; two daughters, Cathy Stewart of Hobbs, N.M., and Linda Porter of Ruston, La.; one brother, Robert A. Fillmon of Longmont, Colo.; three sisters, Merle Nowak of Chicago, Joann Andos of Providence, R.I., and Hortence Hail of Denver; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will be at 533 Park Ave. in Abilene Friday.
