Retired Lt. Col. John Jacob Valkenaar
Retired Lt. Col. John Jacob Valkenaar, 82, died Monday in a local hospital.
Graveside services with military honors will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Elmwood Memorial Park with the Rev. Bill Libby officiating, directed by North's Funeral Home, 242 Orange.
Mr. Valkenaar was born in El Paso, where he grew up, and graduated from New Mexico State University in 1940. He was in both the U.S. Army Air Corps and Air Force, and was a fighter pilot in the Philippines in the 1940s. He was a Japanese prisoner of war for 3-1/2 years during World War II. He worked as a engineer at Dyess Air Force Base until retiring in 1965. He then was an air conditioning engineer for West Texas Utilities until 1980. He was a past president of the local chapter of Texas Society of Professional Engineers and also was a past TSPE state director. He was a past president of Elmwood West Lions Club, a past director of Chisholm Trail Council of Boy Scouts and a Mason. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Valkenaar of Abilene; two sons, Dr. John Valkenaar Jr. of Austin and Roger Valkenaar of Abilene; and one grandchild.

Odis Odell Davis
CLYDE - Odis Odell Davis, 70, died Tuesday in an Abilene hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Denton Valley Baptist Church with the Revs. Riley Fugitt and Ronnie Timms officiating. Burial will be in Kendrick Cemetery in Denton Valley, directed by Bailey Funeral Home.
Mr. Davis was born in Denton Valley and lived in the Clyde-Denton Valley area all his life. He married Lou Ella Pinkston in 1946 in Abilene and worked in construction until retiring. He then was a farmer. He was a trustee of the Kendrick Cemetery Association and was a member of Denton Valley Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, of Clyde; one son, George Davis of Clyde; two brothers, Jesse Carl Davis of Clyde and James Herman Davis of Abilene; one sister, Odie Bell Willson of Abilene; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Adah Clegg
ROTAN - Adah M. Clegg, 93, of Killeen and formerly of Rotan, died Tuesday in a Copperas Cove nursing home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Weathersbee Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Kimbrough, and Drs. Brad Lewis Hyde and Truell W. Hyde officiating. Burial will be in Cottonwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Clegg was born in Stonewall, Texas, and attended what is now Southern Nazarene University. She was a school teacher and formerly lived in Abilene. She was the widow of the Rev. Lewis H. Clegg, whom she married in 1919 in Snyder.
Survivors include two daughters, Erdeen Hyde of Killeen and Lois Solomon of Bartlesville, Okla.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Memorials may be sent to Memorial Baptist Church Building Fund in Killeen.

Sylvester Rose
LORAINE - Sylvester Rose, 67, died Thursday in a Colorado City hospital.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today in Canaan Baptist Church with the Revs. Homer Reddic, Robert Bracy and Earl Shelton officiating. Burial will be in Loraine Cemetery, directed by Kiker-Seale Funeral Home of Colorado City.
Mr. Rose was born in Rosebud and married Opal Mae Scott in 1948. He worked for Maryneil Foundry and RS&P Railroad. He also was a truck driver before becoming self-employed. He served on the deacon board at Canaan Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, of Loraine; one son, Louis C. Rose of Indianapolis; five daughters, Leslie Butler of San Jose, Calif., Brenda Jenell Hill of Modesto, Calif., Emma L. Miller of Indianapolis, Flora Gean Amir of Cleveland and Joffelyn Chequita Rose of Indianapolis; one brother, Earlie Rose of Abilene; three sisters, Ollie Samples of Sweetwater, Dorothy R. Jackson of Polis, Ind., and Lillie P. Wideman of San Antonio; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Gladys Evrage
BROWNWOOD - Gladys Evrage, 89, died Monday in a local hospital.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Rocky Creek Cemetery with Dr. Gene Law officiating, directed by Heartland Funeral Home of Early.
Mrs. Evrage was born in Hill County and was a former longtime Bangs resident. She attended school in McDaniel and Concord and was a homemaker. She was a member of First Baptist Church and was the widow of Clifford N. Evrage, whom she married in 1925 in Brownwood.
Survivors include two sons, James R. Evrage of Fort Worth and Doy E. Evrage of Martinsville, Ind.; one daughter, Myrtle Mercer of Brownwood; one brother, Robert DeArman of Florence, Ariz.; two sisters, Florence Choate of Sweetwater and Freddia Wilson of Valley Mills; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Flowers
EASTLAND - Dorothy R. Flowers, 71, died Monday in an Abilene hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ron Ebert officiating. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Evergreen Cemetery in Stanton.
Mrs. Flowers was born in Dawson County and worked as a manager for I.D.C. Inns Corp. in Indianapolis for four years. She moved to Eastland in 1989.
Survivors include one son, Steve L. Flowers of Azle; one daughter, Joyce Osborn of San Antonio; four brothers, Cliff Durham of Gail, Morris E. Durham of Belvedere, S.C., Billy W. Durham of San Augustine and Noel Durham of Folsom, Calif.; one sister, Verna Dykes of Colmesneil; and one grandchild.

Mabel West
BROWNWOOD - Mabel C. West, 91, owner and operator of a laundry for many years, died Monday in a local nursing home after a brief illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Martin officiating. Burial will be in Greenleaf Cemetery.
Mrs. West was born in Rising Star and lived most of her life in Brown County. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Brownwood Evangelism Center and was the widow of Alvin G. West.
Survivors include one sister, Vivian Dell Hardin of Farmington, N.M.; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Annie Mae Ferrell
SWEETWATER - Annie Mae Ferrell, 85, died Tuesday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in McCoy Funeral Home Chapel of Memories with Jerry Vinson officiating. Burial will be in Spring Creek Cemetery near Avoca.
Mrs. Ferrell was born in Liberty, Ala., and lived in Sweetwater most of her life. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Avenue B Church of Christ and was the widow of Furman Claude Ferrell, whom she married in 1931 in Big Spring.
Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Ann Meiners of Denver; one son, Richard Ferrell of Sweetwater; one sister, Minnie McNutt of El Paso; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Marie Lynn
BLANKET - Dorothy Marie Lynn, 65, lifelong Brown County resident, died Tuesday in a Brownwood hospital.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday in Heartland Funeral Home Chapel in Early with the Rev. Billy Camp officiating. Burial will be in Blanket Cemetery.
Mrs. Lynn was born in Runnels County and married Kenneth Lynn in 1949 in Odessa. She was a homemaker and moved to Blanket in 1978. She was a Baptist.
Survivors include her husband, of Blanket; two sons, Larry Lynn of Blanket and Marvin Lynn of Early; six daughters, Carolyn Elam of Ira, Wanda Stewart and Loretta Jones, both of Brownwood, Wannell Townsand of Blanket, and Tina Gresham and Geretta Reagor, both of Odessa; three brothers, Howard Musick of Early, Albert Musick of Salt Creek and Troy Musick of Sterling City; 21 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today in the funeral home.
