Raymond 'Red' Hughes
AVOCA -- Raymond E. "Red" Hughes, 85, of Abilene and formerly of Avoca, died Wednesday in an Abilene care center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel in Stamford with the Rev. Terry Davis officiating. Burial will be in Springcreek Cemetery.
Mr. Hughes was born in Tolar County and moved to the Avoca area as a child. He married Evelyn Smith in 1936 and was a farmer and rancher. He was a member of Broadview Baptist Church in Abilene.
Survivors include his wife, of Avoca; one daughter, Theresa Pierce of Abilene; two sons, Gene Hughes of Granbury and Raymond Hughes of Avoca; one brother, Alton Hughes of Ranger; two sisters, Clelie Thompson of Abilene and Susie Collom of Snyder; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Daymond Jackson
COLEMAN -- Daymond Jackson, 78, lifelong Coleman County resident, died Tuesday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today in Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Arthur Switzer officiating. Burial will be in Santa Anna Cemetery.
Mr. Jackson was born in Coleman County and graduated from Santa Anna High School. He married Ida Lee Switzer in 1940 in Santa Anna and worked for Birdwell & Son Drilling and Dago Alexander Oil Co. until retiring. He was a stockfarmer and was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, of Coleman; one daughter, Geneva Anderson of Abilene; two sons, Dayton Jackson of Abilene and Clayton Jackson of Midland; two brothers, T.A. Jackson of Martinsburg, W.Va., and J.D. Jackson of La Grange; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Opal Lee Ables
STEPHENVILLE -- Opal Lee Ables, 89, died Wednesday in a local nursing home.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in East Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Warmerdam officiating, directed by Stephenville Funeral Home.
Mrs. Ables was born in Shiloh and moved to Erath County in 1920. She owned the 7-11 Store in Dublin for 30 years. She was a Methodist and was the widow of Charles Rivers Ables, whom she married in 1938 in Fort Worth.
Survivors include three sons, James Ables of Abilene, and Donnie Ables and Freddie Ables, both of Stephenville; one daughter, Nelda Crockett of Stephenville; 12 grandchildren; and many great grandchildren.

Sylvia Smith
CROSS PLAINS -- Sylvia B. Smith, 82, formerly of New Mexico, died Wednesday in a local nursing home.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Memory Gardens in Hobbs, N.M., with Wayne Lenz officiating, directed by Higginbotham Funeral Home.
Mrs. Smith was born in Carrizozo, N.M., and was a homemaker. She was a member of First Baptist Church and was the widow of Charles G. Smith, whom she married in 1936 in Lovington, N.M.
Survivors include two sons, Bill Smith of Amarillo and Jim Smith of Calgary, Alberta Canada; one daughter, Bonnie Rogers of Cross Plains; one brother, William R. Ray of Sunnyvale, Calif.; five grandchildren; seven step grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Vaughan O'Connor
BURKBURNETT -- Vaughan C. O'Connor, 87, mother of a Buffalo Gap resident, died Tuesday at her home.
Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today in Owens & Brumley Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Jude Catholic Church with the Rev. Severius J. Blank officiating. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Woodlawn Cemetery in Houston.
Mrs. O'Connor was born in Grand Forks, N.D., and worked as a librarian and realtor. She moved to Burkburnett in 1995. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and St. Jude Catholic Church, and was the widow of Patrick James O'Connor, whom she married in 1946.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Smith of Burkburnett and Virginia O'Connor of San Diego; two sons, Patrick O'Connor of Buffalo Gap and Michael O'Connor of New York, N.Y.; one sister, Glora Mautz of Auburn, Wash.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

J.W. Denman
ROBERT LEE -- J.W. Denman, 74, father of a Tuscola resident, died Sunday at his home.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today in Robert Lee Cemetery, directed by Shaffer Funeral Home.
Mr. Denman was born in Coke County and lived in Robert Lee for many years. He served with the U.S. Navy and received a Purple Heart. He owned and operated a service station. He was a Methodist.
Survivors include one son, Mike Denman of Tuscola; two brothers, O.E. Denman of Tyler and M.L. Denman of Corpus Christi; and two grandchildren.

Crickett Walker
CARBON -- Crickett Walker, 96, lifelong area resident, died Tuesday in an Eastland nursing home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Carbon First Baptist Church with the Revs. Sherl Taylor and Jim Poe officiating. Burial will be in Murray Cemetery, directed by Bakker Funeral Home of Eastland.
Mrs. Walker was a homemaker. She was a member of First Baptist Church and was the widow of W.E. "Slick" Walker, whom she married in 1922 in Carbon.
Survivors include two sons, Dale Walker of Carbon and Monte Walker of Hobbs, N.M.; one daughter, Lila Ussery of Weslaco; one brother, Ramon Collins of California; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

J.C. Butler Jr.
EASTLAND -- J.C. Butler Jr., 77, died Wednesday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with Larry Roberts and Mark Rogers officiating. Burial will be in Eastland City Cemetery.
Mr. Butler was born in San Benito and graduated from Morton Valley High School and Cisco Junior College. He married Barbara Trout in 1941 in Morton Valley and served with the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He worked as a car salesman for Pipkin Motors from 1965-71 and was a pressman for 17 years for Victor Cornelius. He was a part-time salesman for about 13 years for Napa Auto Parts and then was a self-employed salesman and installer of home siding. He had a real estate broker's license and was a member of Harry Jordan Coffee Club and First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, of Eastland; two daughters, Nona Louise Fox of Eastland and Linda Marie Webb of Cisco; two sons, Gary J. Butler of Carbon and Randy C. "Bud" Butler of Eastland; two brothers, Alton Butler of Casa Grande, Ariz., and Bryan Butler of Hasse; two sisters, Inez Wilkerson of Casa Grande, Ariz., and Monnie Ruth Sanders of Cleburne; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. today at 116 E. Garvin St.

Alice McKinley Grow Watson
BROWNWOOD -- Alice McKinley Grow Watson, 98, of Lake Brownwood, died Sunday in a local hospital.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at Lake Brownwood. Burial will be at a later date in Evergreen Cemetery in South Hadley, Mass., directed by Davis-Morris Funeral Home.
Mrs. Watson was born in Orchard Park, N.Y. She was a member of Second Congregational Church in Holyoke, Mass., and was the widow of Henry B. Watson, whom she married in 1921.
Survivors include three sons, Willard "Bill" Watson of Lake Brownwood, Henry "Hank" Watson of Canaan, N.H., and David Watson of Springfield, Mass.; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to a favorite charity; Pioneer Cemetery, c/o Cross Plains Citizen Bank; Heart of Texas Baptist Encampment, Lake Brownwood; or Second Congregational Church Memorial Fund, Holyoke, Mass.
