Berta Wharton
Berta G. Wharton, 97, died Friday at a local nursing home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Laurel Land Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Charles Savage officiating. Burial will be in Laurel Land Memorial Park in Dallas. Local arrangements were made by North's Funeral Home, 242 Orange.
Mrs. Wharton was born in Troup and graduated from Sweetwater High School. She was a longtime resident of Dallas and Arlington before she moved to Abilene in 1980.
Mrs. Wharton was the widow of Dave Wharton, whom she married in 1922. She was a homemaker and a member of the Assembly of God church.
Survivors include two daughters, Jo Marie Gordon of Abilene and Edith Jolly of Alma, Ark.; two sons, David Wharton of Nashville, Tenn., and Donald Wharton of Abilene; 10 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Jennie Hixson
Jennie A. Hixson, 78, died Thursday at a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Elliott-Hamil Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park.
Mrs. Hixson was born in Boston, then moved to Lincoln, Neb. She came to Abilene about 30 years ago with her husband, James Clyde Hixson, who preceded her in death in 1994. She was a homemaker and a Catholic.
Survivors include her son, Walter A. Andrews III of Miller, Mo.; two daughters, Rosemary Young of Abilene and Jean Marie Andrews Erickson of Des Moines, Iowa; a sister, Irene Erwin of Memphis, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Homes Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory.

Dosie Gray McCain
SYLVESTER - Dosie Gray McCain, 98, died Friday night in a Rotan hospital.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today in the First United Methodist Church of Sylvester with the Rev. Jeff Sedberry and the Rev. Tommy Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Sylvester Cemetery, directed by Weathersbee Funeral Home of Rotan.
Mrs. McCain was born in Cabarrus County, N.C. She married Floyd J. McCain in Sylvester in 1916; he preceded her in death in 1971.
Mrs. McCain had lived in the area since 1901. She was the oldest living member of the First United Methodist Church, where she worked as church secretary. She also worked for the Sylvester Gin Company. Mrs. McCain was a licensed vocational nurse.
Survivors include a sister, Della Maberry of Daingerfield; three nieces and one nephew.

Charlie E. Walton
RANGER - Charlie E. Walton, 91, died Friday at an Eastland hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Eastside Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Speer officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, directed by Edwards Funeral Home.
Mr. Walton was born in Ranger and attended school in Colony Community. He worked as a roustabout in the oil field and was a rancher. He lived in Ranger all his life and was a member of the Eastside Baptist Church.
Mr. Walton married Elberta Cleo Smith in 1926; she preceded him in death in 1986.
Survivors include four sons, Charles Walton Jr. of Saginaw, Clifton "Chip" Walton of Ranger, Weldon Walton of Bluff Dale and Johnny Walton of Belton; three daughters, Charlene Chandler of Monahans, Lucille Carroll of Eastland and Margie Hogan of Weatherford; one sister, Virgie Minchew of West; 18 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Dell Cox Moore
BROWNWOOD - Mary Dell Cox Moore, 75, died Saturday at an Abilene hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ruben Packer officiating. Burial will be in Lost Creek Cemetery in Brown County, directed by Davis-Morris Funeral Home.
Mrs. Moore was born in Gerard and moved to Brownwood from Byrds in 1947. She married Waymon Moore in Brownwood in 1974; he preceded her in death later that year.
Mrs. Moore was retired from Texas Feather and was employed with Songbird Lodge. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church.
Survivors include one brother, Jay Cox of Mesquite; two sisters, Millie Sikes of Brownwood and Maggie McKeehan of Irving; 13 nieces, 10 nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Lillian May Buntin
GORMAN - Lillian May Buntin, 85, died Friday in Oahu, Hawaii.
Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the Gorman Cemetery with the Rev. Dane Gressett officiating, directed by Higginbotham Funeral Home.
Mrs. Buntin was born in Gorman. She married Rupert M. Buntin in the New Hope community in 1931; he preceded her in death in 1992. She was a Protestant.
Survivors include one son, Rupert Buntin Jr. of Gorman; one brother, A.L. Grice of Desdemona; one sister, Lucille Bledsoe of Big Spring; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

William N. 'Bill' Smoot
RISING STAR - William N. "Bill" Smoot, 88, died Saturday at a Brownwood hospital.
Services will be at 3 p.m. today at Higginbotham Chapel with Dwaine Clower officiating; burial will be in Sabanno Cemetery, directed by Higginbotham Funeral Home in Cross Plains.
Mr. Smoot had lived in Rising Star since 1940. He married Mary Wood in Baird in 1932, and he had served in the Army. He was an oil field worker and a farmer, and he was a member of Pioneer Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Smoot of Rising Star; two sons, Bill D. Smoot of Oplin and Odean Smoot of Fort Worth; three daughters, Catherine Meador of Pioneer, Kay Thompson of Early and Barbara Henson of Cross Plains; one brother, A.C. Smoot of Grapeland; 21 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

Gwenda Hyatt Knight
Gwenda Hyatt Knight, 47, died Saturday at a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Hawley with the Rev. Allan Cartrite officiating. Burial will be in Central Cemetery near Hawley, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
Mrs. Knight was born in White Settlement and moved permanently to Hawley in 1976 after living there off and on. She graduated from Hawley High School in 1967 and was employed by the Texas Department of Human Services in Anson as a case worker. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Hawley.
Survivors include her husband, Greg Knight of Abilene; her father, Howard Hyatt of Hawley; two daughters, Elaina Leigh Knight and Erica Jill Knight, both of Hawley; two sisters, Dorene Adams and Ronda Hyatt, both of Hawley; one niece and one nephew.

Mattie Lou Smith Davis
Mattie Lou Smith Davis, 88, died Sunday at a local nursing home.
Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. today in Masonic Cemetery with Weldon Gann officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
Mrs. Davis was born in Kennedale, where she attended school. She moved to Abilene from Fort Worth in 1933. She was a private-duty nurse for 15 years and was a member of the Church of Christ and Rebecca Lodge. She married Horace Stark Davis in 1930 in Anadarko, Okla.; he preceded her in death.
Survivors include three sons, John Shelby Davis and Curtis E. Davis, both of Abilene, and Robert H. Davis of Chandler; two daughters, La Vaughn Wales of Abilene and Mary Ann Niedecken of Pensacola, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
